Years before he rebooted the Halloween franchise, Rob Zombie was given the opportunity to helm the long-awaited crossover clash that was Freddy vs. Jason, but for better or worse, the cult director and White Zombie frontman ultimately passed on the project.
The Lords of Salem filmmaker wasn’t the only familiar figure approached for Freddy vs. Jason, a project that had been bubbling in development since the ‘80s. Future Lord of the Rings helmsman Peter Jackson, for instance, was asked if he’d consider doing the movie after he wrote a script for a sixth Nightmare on Elm Street pic.
Ultimately, Jackson’s Elm Street screenplay lost out to Michael De Luca’s script for Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, but after the 1991 flick underperformed at the box office, Jackson was again considered for Freddy vs. Jason. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a Game of Thrones fan.
Full of drama, action, noteworthy betrayals, epic monologues, and its own language, Game of Thrones, adapted by HBO from the book series by George R.R. Martin, quickly stole the hearts of millions of people around the world.
In spite of a disappointing season finale episode, until recently, I would have argued that Game of Thrones was the best show of the last decade.
Then I found Watchmen.
For starters, the female characters in Watchmen were refreshing contrats to the "damsel in distress" or "sidekick" roles historically played by females on screen.
Both the show's heroine and the show's formidable villain Lady Trieu were strong female characters throughout the series.
While Game of Thrones had its share of strong female characters, most of them suffered confusing character shifts by the end of the series.

Oh my god, where to start with Crypsis? The official plot line goes something like this: “A group of friends make a bet to see who can survive camping on an island for a night. Unbeknownst to them, a strange creature lurks throughout the night terrorizing their every move, and sound is their biggest enemy.” But in reality what we get is a bunch of unlikeable, obnoxious bro-types going to an island, being as bitchy and annoying as any female genre stereotype could be (which is the Only refreshing thing about this film!) and getting picked off one by one by an extra from Lord of the Rings.
Can you tell I didn’t like Crypsis? Because I really didn’t. Between the cliched...

Call it the J.J. Effect. Animatronics — along with similar techniques like puppetry, makeup effects and miniatures — is making a comeback.
The work was long responsible for some of the most iconic characters and scenes in cinema history, then shunted aside in the 1990s as CGI became cheaper and delivered ever more realistic results. But J.J. Abrams, a director who’d grown up in the effects heyday of the ’70s and ’80s, followed his love of those arts and the cinematic language of “Star Wars” when he included a wide range of animatronics in 2015’s “The Force Awakens.” Now, Hollywood is rediscovering its love of puppets controlled by motors, gears and cables, whether via the expansion of the “Star Wars” universe or in movies like Netflix’s “Dark Crystal” reboot, “Age of Resistance.”
Film fans of a certain age (which include many of today’s directors) never fell out of love with so-called practical effects.

With the controversial last season of Game of Thrones now fading out of our memories, there’s a sizeable gap in the schedule when it comes to big budget fantasy TV shows. Of course, Amazon is prepping their adaptation of Lord of the Rings while HBO is working on a Game of Thrones prequel, but Netflix has beat them both with The Witcher.
Adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s classic fantasy books, which most people will probably be familiar with thanks to the excellent video games by CD Projekt Red, the series has been a huge hit for the streaming site. It’s currently the highest-rated show on Netflix, season 2 is already in production and we’re hearing that a third run has been greenlit as well. But what can fans expect when the series returns with new episodes?
Well, that remains to be seen, but it seems like an absolute certainty...

Remember all those years ago when the Mystic River (2003) team was trying to fight Lord of the Rings for the Oscar and trying a variation of “actors are the best special effects” as its campaign angle? That’s always been true even though those Hobbits deserved the win (if you think those movies would have been half as good without Elijah Wood’s purity and awe or Viggo’s resigned gravitas or Sir Ian’s commanding wit think again). In 2019 Avengers Endgame wouldn’t have obsessed the world so much if the core group of actors hadn’t spent the last decade building-up the love and squabbles of this superpowered chosen family. Similarly Captain Marvel benefitted early in the year from a fun chemistry between Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson, the actress bringing out a new, or at least revived, energy in Jackson’s umpteenth return to Nick Fury.

The screenwriter walks us through real events that inspired 1917, and her thoughts on supposed Lord of the Rings allusions.
Krysty Wilson-Cairns is quick to describe herself as a history nerd. She happily said as much when we first met several months ago to discuss 1917, and she recalled childhood afternoons watching World War documentaries in her grandfather’s Glasgow den. Yet this interest is more than just a passing curiosity.
When director Sam Mendes called Wilson-Cairns with the idea for 1917—a First World War film that he already knew would be filmed to appear as a single, uninterrupted shot—her next stop was obvious: the personal storage space filled with World War I history books and journals that she’d been meaning to dive back into for years. And after that the Imperial War Museum in London. All of it would come to inform the brief but harrowing...

Netflix's 10-part prequel to The Dark Crystal, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, is pitch perfect fantasy.

This Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance review contains no spoilers, except for some information that was presented in the series’ trailers. It is based on all ten episodes of the debut season.
While it earned a modest profit during its original 1982 theatrical run, The Dark Crystal never lived up to the high expectations that Universal or project mastermind Jim Henson had for it. Influenced by everything from new age philosophy to classic fantasy works, the film – directed by Henson and frequent collaborator Frank Oz – was a technical marvel that told its ambitious story through revolutionary puppetry techniques. While a bit derivative of Lord of the Rings and Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey The Dark Crystal had plenty of innovation of its own. The problem, for lack of a better word,...

Stars: Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Madeleine Sami, Martin Donovan, Michael Smiley | Written by Toby Harvard | Directed by Ant Timpson
Directed by Ant Timpson in his feature directorial debut, based on his idea and written by Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler), Come to Daddy is a New Zealand film project. It stars Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), someone not unfamiliar with New Zealand film work, as Norval Greenwood, a thirty-something musical artist who travels to a cabin in the middle-of-nowhere and attempts to reconnect with his father.
Stephen McHattie plays Gordon, a wonderfully manic and unpredictable man, played with a real tension that creates discomfort and awkwardness in the scenes between himself and Norval in the early stages of the movie. Norval begins as a cocksure and almost arrogant character with a past shadowed with demons of alcoholism and self-harm, but as the film progresses and the relationship between father and son grows and adapts,...

IFC Midnight has acquired U.S. rights to “Radioflash,” a survival thriller starring Dominic Monaghan and Brighton Sharbino, Variety has learned. The company will release the movie on Nov. 15.
The film imagines a dystopian future, one in which an electric-magnetic pulse strikes America, knocking out all the power and pushing the country into the Dark Ages. Reese (Sharbino), a tech-savvy teenager and her father Chris (Monaghan) flee the city, and seek refuge with her grandfather deep in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Safety proves to be hard to come by.
“With a genre film, the type we have seen before, the challenge is to make it different,” director Ben McPherson said in a statement. “I wanted this film to be unpredictable and disorienting so that the viewer like the protagonist never knew what was around each corner. There is never a moment in the film where we are certain about who we can trust,...

Even those who don’t like Star Wars can likely quote many of the iconic lines, name several of the legendary characters and give a basic plot summary of at least one of the movies. The intergalactic series is arguably the most prominent cinematic franchise in the American public’s mind, but according to a poll on Twitter it’s not the most popular. That distinction belongs to The Lord of the Rings.
In a head-to-head poll put up by a Netflix affiliate Twitter account, 61% of voters elected to go with the Tolkien-inspired movies over Star Wars. Apparently, 38,041 people took part in the referendum, which means that it does hold some validity. It’s also not like the account is slanted towards Lord of the Rings. In 2017, “Pretty Little Liars” wrapped up seven seasons of mystery and signed off the air with a polarizing ending. If you still need a “spoiler alert” warning, you aren’t truly a fan, so it’s fair to remind everyone that Troian Bellisario’s character Spencer turned out to have an evil twin.
“Pll” fans had a lot of feelings about the big reveal. Some liked the evil twin thing; some compared it to a predictable soap opera twist.
Two years later, Bellisario understands why the ending left some viewers feeling unsatisfied.
“It’s so funny because I knew about it so many years in advance that that’s always where it was going, but I understand that a lot of people felt very sideswiped by it,” Bellisario told Variety at the premiere of her upcoming film, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette.”

The race to replace “Game of Thrones” has its latest entrant, with Amazon’s new “Carnival Row,” a series that combines fantasy, melodrama, ultraviolence, and strained political allegory. But, for now, the “Thrones” legacy seems safe: This new series reaches for credibility with gruesomeness and exaggeration, falling flat at every turn. It’s painful proof that a genre success cannot be reverse-engineered.
That engineering does seem solid: “Carnival Row,” renewed for a second season before its first has aired, was built to last in our current Comic-Con-fueled universe. Its marquee stars are Orlando Bloom (of the “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” cinematic universes) and Cara Delevingne, and it tells a story whose nastiness would appear, in theory, to be ameliorated by the dreamy magic at its margins.
The show takes place in a sort of fantastical Victorian era in which guns and bombs are real, but...

You can tell from a glance that these are no ordinary horses. Tall, immaculately brushed and each costing tens of thousands of dollars, the 33 thoroughbreds and warmbloods gleam like polished coins in their newly built stables, at odds with the construction cranes and empty housing developments of semirural China around them.
Until the “Fengshen Trilogy” fantasy epic started shooting at the Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis in August of last year, the world’s most populous country didn’t have any film horses. But the production team wasn’t fazed. We talked to Travis Beacham and Marc Guggenheim about creating a world of humans and mythical creatures for Carnival Row.
Carnival Row, Amazon's upcoming fantasy drama starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, is epic in its scope and worldbuilding. Set in a neo-Victorian city filled with mythical creatures, the story follows Bloom's Philo, a human detective working to catch a serial killer, and Delevingne's Vignette, a refugee faerie with a dangerous secret.
Created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham (Electric Dreams), with the Arrowverse's Marc Guggenheim as an executive producer, Carnival Row has a lot of TV experience behind-the-scenes. Den of Geek had the chance to chat with Beacham and Guggenheim about bringing such a complex world to life.

Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings” television series is moving full steam ahead with director J.A. Bayona and showrunners Jd Payne and Patrick McKay. As revealed by a teaser video announcing the series’ crew, one key behind-the-scenes supervisor will be J.R.R. Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey. In a recent interview after being confirmed for the series (via /Film), Shippey revealed “there’s supposed to be 20 episodes for the first season.” The number would make “The Lord of the Rings” the size of a broadcast drama, which often runs 22 episodes in a season. Shippey also explained some of the restrictions facing the new series.

Netflix has won the battle for a multimillion-dollar, multi-year overall deal with “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the streaming platform confirmed to Variety. This follows a three-way bidding war that had recently narrowed from the six major studios to Netflix, Amazon and Disney.
The deal is a multi-year agreement to write, produce and direct new TV series and films exclusively at Netflix.
“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos in a statement. “They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”
“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home,” said Benioff and Weiss jointly.

Even from the word ‘go,’ we knew Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV show was going to be a Herculean effort.
This is, after all, a TV series adapting the renowned work of J.R.R. Tolkien, so it should come as no surprise that the first season may span 20-episodes in length. Or so says Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey, who has been tapped as a consultant for Amazon’s fantasy-fuelled series.
During a recent interview with Deutsche Tolkein (h/t Geek Tyrant), Shippey suggested that The Lord of the Rings‘ inaugural season may well boast 20 episodes in total – a colossal number for any streaming service – while also offering up one or two pertinent details about where the show is headed. This is a transcript from Deutsche Tolkein, so you’ll have to excuse the broken English.

Andy Serkis was only officially confirmed to be behind the camera on Venom 2 yesterday after speculation had been linking him to the project for weeks, but the director is already eager to put his ideas for the franchise into action. The first movie may not have been universally adored, but it nonetheless managed to earn over $850 million at the box office, making a sequel almost a foregone conclusion.
Serkis may not seem like an obvious choice to many people to take over a big budget studio pic, but despite being best known for his pioneering motion capture work and performances in the Lord of the Rings series, King Kong and the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy, the filmmaker also acted as the second unit director on Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, as well as helming two distinct features of his own: the biopic Breathe and effects-heavy fantasy Mowgli.

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Good casting makes all the difference in the movie business. You can have a great script, a big budget, and the best director but without the right actors, everything can fall a little flat.
Yet even good casting can go wrong every now and then. Someone who once seemed perfect for a particular role suddenly falls flat once the cameras start rolling, unable to bring to life what they once successfully conveyed during an audition and initial screen test. Other times injuries, contractual obligations, or other unforeseen personal circumstances can put paid to the best-laid plans.
Then there are the dreaded “creative differences” where conflicts between actors and directors end with one of the injured parties exiting a project...

With Tom Hardy reprising the title role, Andy Serkis is set to direct “Venom 2,” the sequel to Sony Pictures’ 2018 Marvel movie that nabbed $855 million at the global box office. This is the fourth film to be directed by the “War for the Planet of the Apes” and “Lord of the Rings” actor following “Breathe,” “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle,” and the filmed hip-hop performance piece “The Ruins of Empires” for British television.
“Venom,” which received abysmal reviews despite making bank, starred Tom Hardy as investigative journalist Eddie Brock, whose body becomes host to an alien parasite that endows him with superhuman abilities. The film co-starred Michelle Williams as Brock’s embittered district attorney ex-fiancée, as well as Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott.
Many audiences and critics felt the film was a creative failure, despite some cult-like appreciation down the line. Co-creator Todd McFarlane, however, was happy with the film.

Whenever Andy Serkis’ name is mentioned, it’s likely that either his roles in the Lord of the Rings or Planet of the Apes series will come to mind. After all, there’s a reason most folks call him the King of Mocap. But if you’re a Marvel fan, you may know him best for his involvement in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther, two films where he played Ulysses Klaue.
Well, now we can add yet another Marvel property to his resume, as The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that Serkis has boarded Venom 2. But this time, he’ll be working behind the camera, not in front of it. Yes, as was previously rumored, the filmmaker will direct Sony’s upcoming sequel, meaning that unfortunately, Ruben Fleischer isn’t coming back.

Andy Serkis is set to direct Sony’s “Venom 2,” a sequel to last year’s superhero box office smash starring Tom Hardy.
Serkis was among a handful of filmmakers that met earlier this month, a group that included “Bumblebee” helmer Travis Knight and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes'” Rupert Wyatt. Ruben Fleischer directed the first movie in 2018, but isn’t returning as he is in post-production on the studio’s “Zombieland: Double Tap.” Sony hopes to shoot the follow-up to “Venom” in the fall.
Hardy is returning as the journalist-turned-alien symbiote. “Venom,” from Sony Pictures’ catalog of Marvel characters, became a surprise hit for the studio. The comic-book adventure grossed $213 million at the domestic box office and a massive $855 million worldwide. The news comes after Sony recently dated an untitled Marvel sequel for October 2020. Amazon Studios will adapt Brian K. Vaughan's comic Paper Girls into a TV series.
Earlier this year, prolific comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan struck a deal with Legendary Entertainment to adapt some of his comic IP. Now the first project from that deal has been announced.
According to Deadline, Brian K. Vaughan, Legendary, and Plan B (the studio behind Moonlight) have a deal in place with Amazon Studios to adapt his time traveling adventure story Paper Girls. Amazon Studios is the studio arm behind Amazon Prime and it's safe to assume that means the Paper Girls TV series is destined for Jeff Bezos's streaming giant.

Strange things are happening at Amazon. The streaming service has given a series commitment to Paper Girls, a drama based on Brian K. Vaughan’s popular graphic novel about four time-traveling, newspaper-delivering 12-year-old girls, our sister site Deadline reports.
Nearly 30 issues of the sci-fi saga, illustrated by Cliff Chiang, have been released since Oct. 2015. The series’ (simplified) synopsis is as follows: “In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Suburban drama and otherworldly mysteries collide in this smash-hit series about nostalgia, first jobs, and the last days of childhood.

“Stranger Things” has reached peak popularity. And much of that popularity stems from the series’ unyielding devotion to all things nostalgia. Arguably every frame of the series, especially in the third season, is chock full of references and Easter Eggs that will make your ‘80s-obsessed friends squee. But for many people, those references and nostalgia-filled moments are the sources of groans, not glee. And in “Stranger Things 3,” this difference can be summed up in one scene — “The NeverEnding Story” serenade.
