Judge Says She Is Ending Conservatorship Between Former NFL Player Michael Oher And The Tuohy Family
A Tennessee judge said Friday she is ending a conservatorship agreement between former NFL player Michael Oher and a Memphis couple who took him in when he was in high school, but the highly-publicized dispute over financial issues will continue.
Shelby County Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes said she is terminating the agreement reached in 2004 that allowed Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy to control Oher’s finances. Oher signed the agreement when he was 18 and living with the couple as he was being recruited by colleges as a star high school football player. Their story is the subject of the film “The Blind Side”, which earned Sandra Bullock an Oscar.
Gomes said she was not dismissing the case. Oher has asked that the Tuohys provide a financial accounting of money that may have come to them as part of the agreement, claiming that they used his name, image and likeness...

Michael Lewis, the author of the book that inspired The Blind Side, defended former NFL lineman Michael Oher’s (alleged) adopted family, the Tuohys, and blamed Hollywood for the financial situation that resulted in Oher filing a lawsuit against the family.
Earlier this week, Oher sued Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, claiming that they were not his adoptive parents and instead placed him under a conservatorship at the age of 18 that gave them legal authority over his business deals. As part of that alleged arrangement, the Tuohys limited what money...

Sahar Elhabashi, VP, Head of Podcast Business, outlined the plans in a blog post.
“We are expanding our partnership efforts with leading podcasters from across the globe with a tailored approach optimized for each show and creator,” the exec explained. “This fundamental pivot from a more uniform proposition will allow us to support the creator community better. However, doing so requires adapting.”
WGA East members at Gimlet and Parcast said in a statement: “We’re heartbroken — again — for our coworkers who have lost their jobs. And we’re frustrated by the mismanagement that led us here.” left the company. One prominent departure amid those layoffs was Dawn Ostroff,...

This Riverdale review contains spoilers.
Riverdale Season 4 Episode 17
“We are relentlessly slammed with crisis after crisis.”
A few years back, Twitter exploded with the (almost certainly apocryphal) story of a high school performance of Rent which took some serious creative liberties. Here, instead of dealing with AIDS, the characters in Jonathan Larson’s 1990s boho rewrite of La Boheme were coping with diabetes…and the show now had Roger and Mimi forgoing Azt breaks to have their beepers reminding them to take insulin.
I bring this up not to make light of any disease – indeed, I wouldn’t even attempt gallows humor involving any ailment given our terrifying current situation – but mainly to illustrate how even the slightest change to a beloved source material can ultimately dishonor it.. This was a concern that popped into my mind when I heard that Riverdale would be making the decidedly adult-themed Hedwig and the Angry Inch...

After bringing in actors like Russell Crowe, Bryan Cranston, and Kevin Bacon to headline their original series, Showtime has its latest star: Ethan Hawke. The actor is set to play American revolutionary abolitionist John Brown in an adaptation of James McBride’s 2013 National Book Award-winning novel “The Good Lord Bird.” The series will follow the perspective of Onion, a teenager living in slavery in Kansas who eventually joins Brown’s group of activists. The novel also covers the events leading up to the Harpers Ferry raid, an 1859 effort to control a military arsenal that lead to a nationwide revolt against slavery as an institution. “Good Lord Bird” is planned as an eight-part series and is the latest project in the growing portfolio of Blumhouse Television.
To help bring this story to the screen, “Good Lord Bird” has tapped “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” director Anthony Hemingway to executive produce and direct the series.

Madrid — Chilean Manuela Martelli’s “1976,” Argentine Maximiliano Schonfeld’s “Jesús Lopez” and Cuban Marcos Díaz Sosa’s “Obra de choque” have all made the cut of Proyecta, a movie project showcase which represents one of the major innovations at this year’s Ventana Sur, Latin America’s biggest film-tv market and co-production meet.
Though, two weeks and more out from Ventana Sur, buzz still has to build on many new projects in the section, there’s also a good word on Andrew Sala’s “La barbarie,” Natalia Lopez Gallardo’s “Supernova” and Colombian Jennifer Yuribe’s “Sandra” – and curiosity to learn more about Uruguayan Aparicio Garcia’s “Matufia” after his one-of-kind debut earlier this year, the grindhouse rural mobster comedy “La noche que no se repite.”

Above: French poster for Ossessione (1943). Artist: Boris Grinsson. To commemorate the complete retrospective of the films of Luchino Visconti starting today at New York's Film Society of Lincoln Center, I decided to choose my favorite poster for each film in Visconti’s titanic body of work (including the three portmanteau films to which he contributed episodes). For many of his films the range of posters are an embarrassment of riches ranging from tempestuous Italian romanticism and beautifully executed French realism to stark German stylization and wry Polish surrealism. Although I think that Italian romanticism certainly suits Visconti best of all in terms of really representing his work—Averardo Ciriello’s stirring portrait of storm-lashed fishermen for La terra trema being a case in point—it is the more gnomic Polish films that I seem to have gravitated to most. There are eight Polish posters here and what is remarkable is...

In a competitive situation, Paul Lee’s newly-launched indepedent studio wiip has acquired the rights to Gimlet Media’s scripted podcast “Sandra” to develop it as a series for premium television.
Gimlet Pictures, the TV and film production arm of Gimlet Media, will produce the series. The seven-episode podcast launched all episodes on April 18. It is set five minutes in the future and follows Helen Perez, a new hire at Orbital Industries, the company behind Sandra, the world’s most intuitive virtual assistant. As one of thousands of Sandra operators, Helen spends her days peeking into the world of Sandra users and helping them navigate their questions and demands. One problem: the users don’t know she’s real. Along the way, Helen’s own world becomes more difficult to navigate, too, as she struggles to manage a divorce while keeping her boss Dustin happy.
