Jason Bayle: David Gelbman

Quotes

  • [Tree goes to meet her parents. Before she approaches their table, she takes a long look at them, knowing it is the last time she is going to see her beloved mother alive]

David Gelbman : [stands]  There's the other birthday girl. Hi, sweetie.

Tree Gelbman : [hugs her father]  Hey, Dad. Um, do you mind if I talk to Mom alone for a minute? Just some girl talk.

David Gelbman : Oh. Well, sure. I-I can go run some work calls.

[Tree's father takes his cellphone and walks away]

    Tree Gelbman : Okay, thanks.

    [Tree sits near her mother]

Julie Gelbman : Is everything okay?

Tree Gelbman : [chuckles]  Yeah. It's fine. Everything's fine.

    [pause]

Tree Gelbman : Oh, shit, how do I do this?

Julie Gelbman : [worried]  Do what, sweetie? What's wrong?

    Tree Gelbman : Mom...

[Tree bends forward and holds her mother's hands]

Tree Gelbman : [in trembling voice]  I really want you to know how much I love you.

Julie Gelbman : [chuckles]  Aw. I love you, too, sweetie.

Tree Gelbman : No, Mom, I'm serious.

    [Tree fumbles for words]

Tree Gelbman : You know, people say "I love you" all the time, but... it's not until you can't say it to that person's face anymore that you really realize how much you mean it.

    [Julie nods]

Tree Gelbman : You are so beautiful and so amazing...

    [Tree is choked by tears]

Tree Gelbman : [sniffles]  ... and I just hope I can become half of the woman that you are one day.

Julie Gelbman : [laughs]  Are you kidding? I'm the woman I am because I had you. You know, I never really told anyone this before, but when I was pregnant with you, I was scared shitless.

    [they both laugh]

    Tree Gelbman : [sniffles]  No...

Julie Gelbman : But then, the moment I held you, something inside of me changed instantly. The best kind of love does that. It changes you. It makes you a better person.

David Gelbman : [tearfully]  Oh, God, I'm so stupid. I really thought I could have it all, but I can't.

Julie Gelbman : [shakes her head]  Oh, honey, nobody can. But guess what. That's okay. You'll get what you need.

Tree Gelbman : [tearfully]  I hope so.

Julie Gelbman : Aw. Come here.

    [they hug]

Tree Gelbman : Am I crushing you?

    [they both laugh]

Julie Gelbman : Nope. You're always gonna be my little girl.

[Tree's father appears, carrying a birthday cake with a single candle]

David Gelbman : [sings]  Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, Tree and Mom.

[Tree's father places the cake on the table. Tree looks intently at her mother, cherishing their last moments together, while her tears flow]

Julie Gelbman : Make a wish.

[Tree nods. She smiles and closes her eyes for a monent. Then she and her mother blow the candle together. They smiled lovingly at each other. Shortly afterwards, Tree returns to the lab]

  • [Tree meets her father at the restaurant, to celebrate her birthday]

    Tree Gelbman : Hey, Dad.

    David Gelbman : Hey.

Tree Gelbman : [hugs her father]  Sorry I'm late.

David Gelbman : It's okay, sweetie.

Tree Gelbman : [sits at the table]  It's just been a weird day.

    David Gelbman : Everything okay?

Tree Gelbman : Uh, yeah. It's just... stuff, you know.

    David Gelbman : How's school?

Tree Gelbman : Um, it's fine, Dad.

    [a waitress approaches]

Waitress : Are you ready to order?

David Gelbman : Not yet. We're still waiting on one more.

Tree Gelbman : [puzzled]  One more? I...

Waitress : Okay. I'll be right back.

[Tree cannot believe her eyes: her beloved mother Julie, who died three years ago in the original dimension, stands at the door, alive. She smiles lovingly at Tree]

Tree Gelbman : Mom... oh, mom!

[overwhelmed with joy, Tree rushes to her mother and hugs her lovingly, so strongly that Julie nearly falls backward]

Julie Gelbman : [chuckles]  Whoa! Hi...

Tree Gelbman : [her eyes are filled with tears of joy]  You're here. Are you really here?

Julie Gelbman : [puzzled]  Well, of course I'm here. It's our day.

[Tree hugs her mother again. Julie and David are puzzled at Tree's strange behavior]

Julie Gelbman : Are you okay?

Tree Gelbman : Yeah. Yeah. Oh, God, I'm fine. I'm just... it's good to see you.

[they chuckle. Tree hugs her mother again]

  • [Tree calls the lab, intending to tell Ryan not to close the time-loop, so the day can be reset and she can prevent the deaths of Lori, the guard and Carter. At the lab, Ryan is busy preparing Sissy, and does not notice that someone calls him]

Julie Gelbman : Tree, what is going on?

Tree Gelbman : [murmurs]  I can't let him close it...

David Gelbman : [enters]  You know, I'm not sure about this ice. It kind of smells like pee.

[Tree snatches the car keys from the tables and head for the door. She pushes past her father and exits the room]

David Gelbman : Tree? Tree! Where are you going? Tree?

[Tree enters her parents' car, starts it and drives back to the campus as fast as she can. Tears running down her face, she tries to contact Ryan]

Tree Gelbman : Come on. Come on, come on! Pick up your phone!

[all Tree hears is the automatic message "Yo, it's Ryan. Leave a...". Tree puts the cellphone down]

    Tree Gelbman : Shit!

[at the lab, Ryan, Samar and Dre finally finish preparing Sissy]

Ryan Phan : Here we go!

[desperately, Tree realizes there is only one thing she can do in order to prevent the murders: reset the day by getting herself killed. She drives to the electrical substation she noticed earlier]

Tree Gelbman : Where is it? Come on, come on, come on. Please.

[t the lab, Ryan starts the system sequence. Tree arrives at the electrical substation. She turns the car and rams the fence. Just as one second is left for the machine, Tree rams the electrical transformators, causing massive explosion and power failure at the campus. Sissy shuts down because the process is completed. Tree wakes up in Carter's bed, as usual]

Carter Davis : Oh, hey. You're up. I wasn't sure if you wanted to sleep in or not.

Tree Gelbman : [murmurs]  That is the last time I'm dying for you...

    Carter Davis : [puzzled]  What?

[Tree smiles. She is glad her plan works and Carter is alive]
