- Is life a series of accidents? 4 short stories connected in one evening may help answer the question "Does everything happen for a reason."
- "A birthday, a girl's night out, a pregnancy, and a cop's last night on the beat" 4 stories connected by one thin thread. "Is life a series of accidents, or does everything happen for a reason?"
It's Lukes birthday and he goes out to an Ultra trendy, eclectic, art gallery to meet up with his sister, Sharon, and best friend, Mark. On this particular night, the chef of the event has quit.
As per usual, the conversation between Luke and Sharon turns to the age-old debate "Is life a series of accidents, or does everything happen for a reason?". Laura and Diane are having a "girls night out". Diane is trying to convince Laura that it's time for her to get out and find a mate. Zee is overwhelmed with mounting bills as her girlfriend, Sarah's, pregnancy has been problematic and jobs the catering company she works for have been scarce. Detective Dan ends his final shift at his "usual diner" and he finally musters up the nerve to ask out Deb, the waitress that has served him every week for years.
Lukes argument sends Sharon angrily out the door, Mark follows after her, leaving Luke alone. Zee has reached a point of desperation and is contemplating a drastic act.
Laura and Diane call it a night, but not before Laura accidentally leaves her purse at the bar. Luke seeks "counsel" or at the very least, an ear from the very attractive bartender, Annie. While speaking with Annie, Luke receives a text from Sharon; "all is forgiven, happy birthday". Luke is relieved. He hit's on Annie only to discover this attractive and wise woman has been hiding her very pregnant belly behind the bar. Annie defects Luke's advance and offers Luke her card should he know of a good chef to replace the one that just left. As the night comes to a close Luke leaves to walk home, forgetting his phone at the bar.
Lukes walk brings him face to face with Zee holding a gun, planning to rob a diner, just as Detective Dan steps out. Luke bets on his sense that there is no "real danger" and tells the officer "All is okay." Zee confirms this and Detective Dan walks off leaving the unsettled pair.
Luke takes a chance and asks "why" and Zee tells Luke everything. Realizing he has the answer to her money problems, Luke hands Zee the business card he got from Annie and tells Zee to call Annie in the morning.
As Luke starts his walk home, he discovers he had left his phone at the gallery. Turning around he rushes back.
At the gallery, Luke enters and sees Laura retrieving her forgotten purse. They walk past one another, eyes meet, hearts beat. Luke reaches the bar. Annie has been expecting him. Luke looks behind him to see Laura in the doorway looking back and smiling. Annie hands Luke his phone. Luke takes his phone and runs after Laura.
Luke catches up to Laura under the night sky, in the neon glow of the city lights.
Was this night a series of accidents, or did everything happen for a reason?
