For the first time, NewsNation is going all-in on news programming.
The cable network that relaunched from the ashes of WGN America will finally ditch its predecessor’s re-runs of sitcoms and dramas when it introduces a new schedule consisting entirely of news and political affairs programming in June.
Starting June 1, NewsNation will offer a new weekend evening news program called “NewsNation Now with Adrienne Bankert,” hosted by the news outlet’s former morning show host. The show debuts several months after NewsNation revamped its weekend schedule to include more news programming and a Sunday morning political affairs show hosted by Christ Stirewalt.
“We are immensely proud to announce that NewsNation [will soon be] a 24-7 cable news network,” Sean Compton, the President of Nexstar’s Networks division, said in a statement on Wednesday. “This milestone...

When you think of Sean Connery, you probably think of either James Bond or Indiana Jones' dad. If you grew up in the '90s you might even think of that movie where he was on a submarine, or vaguely recall the marketing for a film where he played opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones. But there's no doubt that long before Connery was advising the "Hunt for Red October" director to rewrite the film's script, or complaining about "Entrapment" having too many special effects, he was best known as either England's greatest spy or as Dr. Henry Jones, Sr.
Still, when it comes to an actor as talented as Connery, not everyone thinks of these roles as his best. If you ask Christopher Nolan, for instance, he'll tell you that the Scottish star's finest performance came in Sidney Lumet's 1973 crime drama "The Offence," with Nolan recently celebrating the film for containing...

Forty years ago, you might be hard-pressed to find anyone in the country who regularly watched the political affairs network called C-span, let alone anyone who actually knew what it was.
Today, the brand is as synonymous as Xerox (copy machines) or Scotch tape (adhesive tape) — it’s a stand-in for any kind of live television coverage related to the hearings, votes and political affairs of Congress and other government agencies, to include the White House.
If it’s political in nature, it’s probably on C-span. But not everything aired on C-Span originates with the networks.
Take, for instance, hearings from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Colloquially, political aficionados and even journalists refer to the coverage as originating from “C-span cameras,” even though they don’t.

Netflix’s Griselda spent a second week as the top streaming title in the United States, according to Nielsen. It was one of three shows to snag more than a billion minutes of watch time for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith also had a solid start for Amazon’s Prime Video, coming in just below the billion-minute mark. HBO’s True Detective also joined the rankings as it reached the midpoint of its fourth season.

The next time you listen to a radio call-in show, “Dave on Line 4” might actually be a robot.
This week, audio imaging provider Benztown debuted a new product that allows radio stations to create so-called “listener audio” for their promotional and programming needs.
The tool, called the “AI Listener Voice Generator,” allows anyone at the station to input 1,000 characters of text to output as much as 50 seconds of speech that can be inserted into commercial spots or live radio programming.
The voice generator includes a multitude of pitches and tones, including female and male voices that range from “normal” to “hyped.” Radio broadcasters can also switch between “listener” and “caller” audio, which changes the output to match audio recorded on a conventional microphone or telephone.
The end result is an audio file that radio stations can use to simulate actual listeners or callers. It comes at a time...

Chris Stirewalt, the garrulous political analyst, is best known, perhaps, for his tenure at Fox News Channel. He’s ready to make a name for himself in a new venue.
Stirewalt famously spent time on screen defending Fox News early — and eerily accurate — projection during the 2020 presidential election that then-President Donald Trump would lose in Arizona, a key state. By the time President Biden was ready to take his oath of office, Stirewalt had exited the Fox Corp. news unit after a decade-long run, fully prepared to put his TV news career in the rearview mirror.
On Sunday, he will have to look in the cameras once again.
Stirewalt is set to anchor “The Hill Sunday,” a bid by upstart cable-news player NewsNation to insert itself into the Sunday-news field typically dominated by decades-old programs with strong video imprimaturs. The anchor believes viewers still yearn for something that tones...

Radio broadcaster Cumulus Media is partnering with artificial intelligence audio solutions provider Super Hi-Fi and HD Radio technology owner Xperi to launch two new automated radio stations in Tennessee.
The stations will air on the HD Radio digital sub-carriers of Wgfx in Nashville, and will serve as a “testing ground for exciting new radio programs and related services to further enhance and innovate broadcast radio’s prominence in the digital dashboard, all while improving the user experience and increasing broadcaster benefits,” the companies said.
The new stations are called “The Hill” and “Nashville Songwriter Radio,” and can be accessed via HD Radio receivers, including cars with built-in or aftermarket HD Radio tuners.
The stations will be powered by Super Hi-Fi’s “Program Director” software, which uses machine learning tools to help radio stations build and scale their automated programming.

Update: SAG-AFTRA said that CBS News has returned correspondent Catherine Herridge’s files, even though the network has disputed that they had seized her material after she was laid off.
In a statement, SAG-AFTRA said that they were “pleased to confirm that earlier today a representative of our union monitored the return of several boxes containing Catherine Herridge’s reporting materials from her CBS News office in Washington D.C. Herridge is currently reviewing the materials.
“We welcome CBS News’ reversal which came after SAG-AFTRA’s intervention and widespread media coverage that underscored shared concerns about press freedom and the First Amendment.”
The network, however, had challenged the notion that they were retaining the materials.
“Catherine’s personal belongings were delivered to her home one week ago, and we are prepared to pack up the rest of her files immediately on her behalf – with her representative present as she requested,...

For the first time since the show became exclusive to Peacock, The Office has made the weekly streaming rankings.
The long-running comedy series racked up 602 million minutes of viewing time for the week of Jan. 22-28, good enough for ninth place among library series. It’s the first appearance for The Office — which was a regular entrant in the early days of the Nielsen rankings — since it left Netflix for Peacock at the beginning of 2021.
At the top of the rankings for the week is Griselda, Netflix’s drama about the infamous drug queenpin starring Sofia Vergara. The series had 1.59 billion minutes of watch time over its first four days of release (it premiered Jan. 25). Reacher (741 million minutes) hung on in second place among original series a week after its second season finale on Prime Video, beating out Netflix’s docuseries American Nightmare (676 million).

Sofia Vergara’s “Griselda” was the most-streamed title in the U.S. during the week of Jan. 22-28. In its first four days of availability on Netflix, the series was watched for 1.6 billion minutes.
This is only the fifth time a streaming original series has taken the No. 1 spot on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings since October, when “Suits” finally began its decline as “The Fall of the House of Usher” debuted. Even after the 15 weeks of first place wins for “Suits,” acquired titles such as “Bluey” and “Young Sheldon” have dominated the chart.
As such the next four spots on the chart are acquired titles: “Bluey” was No. 2 with 1.3 billion minutes watched, followed by “Grey’s Anatomy” with just under 1 billion minutes, “Young Sheldon” with 984 million and “This Is Us” with 776 million.

Dennis Quaid (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) is slipping into the world of a serial killer who used a smiley face as his calling card for Paramount+’s Happy Face. Emmy nominee Quaid will star as the Happy Face Killer in the streamer’s new drama, inspired by the killer’s daughter Melissa Moore’s autobiography, Shattered Silence, and her Happy Face podcast.
Emmy nominee Annaleigh Ashford (Welcome to Chippendales) was previously announced to play Melissa. Filming is expected to get underway this spring, with Paramount+ targeting a 2025 premiere for the eight-episode season.
“Happy Face for Paramount+ jumps off from Moore’s true-life story. Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis.

Exclusive: Catherine Corcoran, Justin Miles, Doug Jones, Dee Wallace and Krsy Fox are starring in If it Bleeds, an indie horror pic from first-time director Matthew Hersh.
The film has been quietly filming and is nearing completion, billed as an “anthology-style crime thriller” from Hersh, whose Night of the Missing with director Samuel Gonzalez Jr is currently topping the Cineverse streaming platform Screambox after launch in December.
In If if Bleeds, genre actor Corcoran as young and ambitious news reporter Diane Winters and her cameraman Simon, played by Miles, as they uncover a mysterious series of gruesome murders that unfold throughout the course of a chaotic and violent day. As events unfold, the duo become players in a sinister situation even more menacing than either one could have imagined.
Horror icons Jones and Wallace will also star, the former as a plastic surgeon, as will actor and musician Fox. Wallace and Fox are consulting producers.
Allison Victoria-Wolfe and Doug Hawley are among the producers, with Gonzalez Jr. directing an additional segment.
”To have so many genre greats believe in me and trust me with the story I wanted to tell with this film at such an early stage of my career was truly surreal,” said Hersh. “I figured what better way to dive into the horror genre than through the eyes of a news reporter in the field seeing and facing the horrors of humanity unfold in front of her very own eyes.”
“Ever a champion of independent filmmakers, I was thrilled when Matthew invited me to come along on this next phase of his creative journey,” added Corcoran Diane’s story is universal in that we all have the need to be seen and valued, and I can’t wait for the world to see how our incredible cast and crew bring that theme to life.”
“Getting to play a quirky cosmetic surgeon was a treat enough for me,” said Jones. “But under Mathew Hersh’s careful direction and witty writing, that treat was sweetened all the more. Add to that the professional, efficient crew, the joy of acting opposite the thoughtful and hilarious Krsy Fox, and this filming experience was dang near perfect.”...

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

Netflix scored 18 Oscar nominations for its 2023 films, with eight for feature films — the most of any distributor. All told, Netflix had nine nominations in top categories incuding Best Picture, International Film, Animated Feature, acting, and writing categories.
Not that Netflix’s domestic viewers seemed to notice. Since the Oscar nomination announcement January 23, not one nominated film reentered its top 10 most watched film list. Since then, two obscure titles have held the top spot: “The Hill,” a faith-based sports biopic that grossed under $8 million when it was released last summer, and “The Postcard Killings,” a 2020 home video-released European murder mystery directed by Oscar-winning director Denis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”).
Nominees fared somewhat better in VOD viewing. Led by “Oppenheimer” (Universal), all five Best Picture nominees that are available to view and without a streaming alternative placed on at least one top 10 list.

The importance of revenue earned by studios from PVOD rentals reasserts itself with news that, as of Tuesday, all but two of the wide films released from either December 22 or December 25 will have home availability. That’s one month or less after their theatrical releases.
Top holiday grosser “Wonka” (Warner Bros.), which opened a week earlier, sleeper rom-com hit “Anyone but You” (Sony), and “The Iron Claw” remain theater-exclusive. Otherwise, the rush for home gold has taken over.
Three of these titles — “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (WB), “Migration” (Universal), and “Ferrari” (Neon) debut on Tuesday. They will join “The Color Purple” (WB) and “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM), both of which came out last week, 22 days after release.
The results for the week actually showed that four earlier films scored better overall during the week. “Purple” did best at Vudu (#4), but only #8 at Apple TV and #10 at Google Play.

NewsNation is making a play in the crowded and competitive Sunday public affairs show space.
The upstart cable news channel — owned by the local TV giant Nexstar — will launch The Hill Sunday beginning March 3. The program will be hosted by Chris Stirewalt, NewsNation’s political editor and the former political editor for Fox News.
The show will have a format similar to many of the other Sunday politics shows, combining interviews with politicians and newsmakers with a panel of commentators. Nexstar also owns The Hill, and already has a weekday politics program bearing the publication’s name.
On broadcast, NBC’s Meet the Press, CBS’ Face the Nation and ABC’s This Week have held court for decades, while CNN and MSNBC have tried a handful of different programs over the years. CNN’s State of the Union has been a constant on the channel. Fox News Sunday was actually...

Film historians will inevitably look back on 2023 as a year of risk-taking, with filmmakers turning to personal projects backed by major studios. On paper and in hindsight, a movie about the world’s most iconic doll sounds obvious, but it took real balls—or a lack thereof in Ken’s case—for Mattel and Warner Bros. to get behind a deconstructed look at the toy in Greta Gerwig’s existential Barbie. Universal arguably took an even bigger risk, putting their full force behind a three hour movie about the birth of the atomic bomb. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer proved perfect counter-programming to Gerwig’s Barbie, as moviegoers championed the double act into the summer box office unicorn Barbenheimer. Martin Scorsese brought his American Western crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon to the screen after seven years of development. Emerald Fennell debuted her second directorial effort, the darkly imaginative and highly divisive Saltburn.

Bill Maher is sharing his thoughts on the way information is spread among young people on social media, particularly TikTok.
On the latest episode of Real Time, the host addressed a now-deleted recent viral video on the social platform of a teen reading 9/11 terrorist leader Osama bin Laden’s 2002 “Letter to America,” which includes antisemitic statements and seeks to justify the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. that left nearly 3,000 people dead and thousands of others injured.
“The kids now have jumped on TikTok from supporting Hamas to supporting Osama bin Laden,” Maher said in his opening monologue. “Is this the Tide pods? Is this the eating the Tide… is this where this is coming from? Are their minds literally poisoned now?” He was referencing the viral and dangerous TikTok challenge from several years back, where teens dared each other to eat Tide pods.

It was the Thanksgiving show for Bill Maher’s Real Time, typically his last show of the fall season before a hiatus. But because of the Writers Guild strikes, the show will go on into December.
That’s reason enough to be thankful. But Maher had an added reason for grace on Friday’s show – he had the comic geniuses of Rob Reiner and Albert Brooks, whose masterful storytelling and energy allowed Maher the privilege of sitting back and simply basking in their glow.
The duo were out in support of their new HBO documentary, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life. But they really didn’t need the excuse of a project to propel things. Fast friends since high school, the conversation flowed easily about their long association with little prompting.

Inspirational biographical dramas will always appeal to a certain segment of the audience. But it’s something about being told the same thing over and over again that has severely diminished the effect most films of this genre intend to leave on us. The makers, taking up the heavy job of telling the story of a real baseball maestro who most people probably hadn’t heard of until now, have evidently sidestepped that risk. As a result, The Hill is blissfully loud as the mouthpiece for a host of impactful journeys. Who knows? Maybe one of these will resonate with you too.

Biopics have been a dependable way for filmmakers to deliver a powerful story. There is always a set template attached with the biopics though. It’s either a rags to riches story or a cautionary tale about someone who fell from glory because of their vices. Which is the more interesting one? I feel the latter and yet there is a great warmth about an inspiring story where someone crossed great obstacles and tasted success. The new film The Hill is based on the life of baseball star Rickey Hill. With full access to all the intricate details about his life, this biopic has enough material to craft an inspiring story around his legacy. Rickey was born with a degenerative spine ailment and yet went on to be known as the ‘hardest hitter’ in baseball. He was a prodigy, but his career was cut short by his physical challenges. Warner Bros. Discovery is projecting huge losses from the impact of writer and actor strikes, but “Barbie” is still around to help them pay bills. It’s hardly news that as Greta Gerwig’s smash hit starts its initial post-theater platform release, it’s #1 on PVOD charts. The real story: that it’s doing so with a hefty premium price.
Gerwig’s #1 theatrical hit worldwide for 2023 (which will end up with around $1.5 billion in theatrical returns) is now renting on PVOD for $24.99, with the option to add it to your digital library permanently for $29.99. Studios recover 80 percent from revenues returned for these transactions, less a small slice for the carrier. That means Warner Bros. Discovery will recoup around $20 for each “Barbie” rental, $25 for each download. It’s a bonanza.

In its second weekend in theaters, MGM and director Emma Seligman’s teen comedy Bottoms broke into the top ten films for the weekend (no. 7) on 715 screens, a major North America expansion from a 10-theater opening last week. An estimated $3 million gross for the three days, and $3.6 million for the four-day Labor Day holiday means the film will continue to expand, with about 1,200 screens planned for next weekend.
Estimated cume to date is $4.3+ million for the $11.3 million-budget title produced by Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman and Alison Small. The casual James Bond fan might think that author Ian Fleming invented all of 007's trademarks before his novels were adapted for the screen, but the truth is a lot more complex. One of the biggest influences on the Bond we've all come to know and love was director Terence Young, who oversaw the spy's first big-screen outing in 1962, "Dr. No." Without Young, Bond would have arguably failed. The filmmaker brought his sophistication, fashion sense, and humor to Bond, all of which would come to define the character in the popular consciousness.
Of course, Young undoubtedly benefited from having Sean Connery as his star. Playing James Bond was, however, a double-edged sword for Connery. The actor debuted as England's greatest spy in "Dr. No," but over the course of the next decade would punctuate his tenure as 007 with remarkably nuanced and powerful performances in such classics as 1965's "The Hill...

Sony’s late-summer event pic Gran Turismo may have officially won the weekend box office race with a $17.4 million domestic opening, but Barbie says she’s the true victor.
Directed by Neill Blomkamp, Gran Turismo had been set to launch nationwide Aug. 11 but switched gears because of the actors strike and the resulting prohibition on the cast — led by Orlando Bloom and David Harbour — doing any press. The studio instead hosted two weekends of sneaks and a handful of fan screenings to build buzz before opening the movie everywhere Aug. 25.
The opening number includes a hefty $3.9 million in grosses from those previous sneaks. It’s hardly the first time that a Hollywood studio has added such grosses to an opening weekend number, but the early Gran Turismo screenings were far more robust than is the norm. Gran Turismo‘s weekend number would have otherwise been $13.5 million.
Put another way: Warner Bros....

For the second weekend in a row, a new film finished on top of the box-office weekend as Gran Turismo debuted with $17.3 million.
In its first weekend in release, Gran Turismo managed to best the second-place film by $0.2 million and narrowly eke out a stint atop the top ten, for at least one week. Although it had to settle for second place with $17.1 million, Barbie managed to hold its ground from last weekend and bring its six-week total to $595 million, making it the top grossing domestic film of the year by $20.3 million. Dropping from first to third was Blue Beetle which brought in $12.8 million over the weekend to raise its two-week total to $46.3 million. Oppenheimer found itself in fourth place with $9 million this weekend, giving it a six-week total of $300 million. In fifth place with $6.1 million, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem brought its four-week total to $98.1 million.

Sony’s Gran Turismo opens top on so-so $17.3m.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer crossed $300m in its sixth weekend of release in North America while Greta Gerwig’s record-breaker Barbie will pass $600m this week as the second National Cinema Day in the US sparked a Sunday cinema-going surge with most grosses in the top 10 out-performing Saturday.
Neill Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo based on the videogame opened top of the charts on an estimated $17.3m in 3,856 theatres, in line with pre-release tracking and marginally ahead of Barbie on $17.1m. Confirmed numbers on Monday will reveal the winner in a tight box office race.

A caveat about this week’s box office recap is that Sunday is National Cinema Day with $4 movie tickets, which is having a huge impact on ticket sales. We might not fully know the results until actual box office is reported on Monday. Even so, read on for the weekend box office report.
Sony released Neill Blomkamp‘s racing movie “Gran Turismo,” based on a true story And a Playstation game, into 3,856 theaters after two weekends of previews and mixed/positive reviews. The movie made $8.5 million on Friday, but that included $1.4 million in Thursday previews and a reported $3.9 million from earlier previews. Sony estimates that the movie opens in first place with $17.3 million, any bump from National Cinema Day negating any frontloading from previews. The good news for “Gran Turismo” is its “A” CinemaScore shows audience buzz that should negate any of the mixed or negative reviews. Being PG-13 can...

Thanks to National Cinema Day, consider this week’s box office report to be a work in progress. For the second year, on a late summer Sunday, the National Association of Theater Owners declared a day of deeply discounted tickets.
With Sunday’s grosses all estimates, those $4 admissions will skew results. — inclduing whether “Gran Turismo” (Sony) or “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) will be #1. Sony claimed $17.3 million; Warners countered with $17.1 million. To be clear, that means WB believes Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster (now over $590 million domestic) gross will increase by 45 percent from Saturday to Sunday over Saturday; Sony has a much more modest increase for “Turismo,” up six percent.
That’s a big leap of faith on Warners’ part. They’re guessing that the top film of the year also will engender the biggest interest in $4 tickets. (What better day to see it again?) Sony’s weekend estimates for “Gran Turismo” include...

Emma Seligman’s Bottoms is looking at an estimated weekend gross of $516k on ten screens with a possible leading $51,625 per-theater average for the raunchy, teenage high school girl take on Fight Club.
That’s a win for MGM, its Orion Pictures label and Brownstone Productions, producers on the modestly budgeted ($11.3 million) film written by Seligman and Rachel Sennott. The film skews young and was backed by edgy marketing — ingredients, although never surefire, behind the biggest post-Covid indie film breakouts.
Sunday’s final tally will determine if Bottoms nabs the highest per-screen average post-pandemic on ten or more screens. A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Opened to $50,131 at 10 locations in March of 2022. National Cinema Day, unspooling today, is a wildcard with attendance up but box office dollars limited by $4 tickets and seats available.

With unofficial numbers rolling in, the studios have called this final week of the 2023 summer movie season for Gran Turismo with an estimated take of $17.3 million, putting it squarely between where tracking saw it on Thursday and our predictions. That number includes $5.3 million the racing film accumulated over the past few weeks of preview screenings. We say “unofficial” numbers because the studios generally report their numbers without knowing exactly what Sunday will bring, they just give it an educated guess based on pre-sales and how the film performed on Friday and Saturday. Well, as we know, today is no ordinary Sunday. It’s National Cinema Day, where tickets are just $4 across the board. Despite that underwhelming opening for Turismo, its small by today’s standards $60 million budget and solid word of mouth (98% audience score and an A cinemascore) should see this one play decently over the next few weeks. You...

It’s an unusual theatrical weekend as the second National Cinema Day rolls out Sunday with $4 tickets for all shows and formats at participating theaters — the bulk of the nation’s circuits big and small. The event was announced Monday with a dedicated clip of new openings, recent returning (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and re-releases.
Angelika said all its theaters in New York Washington, D.C., California, Virginia and Texas are leaning in, and throwing in $4 sodas of any size. Cinergy Dine-In Cinemas, with nine locations in Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Illinois, will offer small popcorns and sodas for $4. Concession discounts are up each theater owner.
