After an eventful Syrian tour, British Army veteran Corporal James 'Jamie' McCain recovers from spinal injuries and psychological trauma in the neurological unit of South Lothian Hospital (Edinburgh, civilian), run by Dr. Archie Watson. While doctors and nurses prepare him for a though rehabilitation, Jamie initially discards as childish fellow ward patient Danny Adams's documented theory that an unidentified killer maliciously causes the excessive patients death rate in the hospital, which his primary case doctor plays down but starts to reach the top, where reputation damage still is feared more. Meanwhile a psychiatrist warns Jamie for paranoia and the army questions him, considering a court martial for unlawful killing on the front.
