Savannah Guthrie may have been cut from a popular television gig, but that hasn’t slowed down her success!
Along with appearing on NBC’s morning program, Today, Savannah is also a best-selling author.
Monsters and Critics reported that she’d recently released her newest book, Mostly What God Does, and warned fans of frauds and scammers.
During a recent Today episode, she recalled how she had been in consideration for a special role.
Also up for a role alongside her in the prominent show was her co-anchor, Hoda Kotb.
However, according to their Today co-star, Carson Daly, she and Hoda were not chosen for the final footage.

Taylor will star as Dr. Eleanor Mayer, a highly acclaimed psychiatrist known for her modern-Freudian approach, in a recurring role. In this clip, she confronts Maggie Siff’s own highly motivated psychiatrist/performance coach character, Wendy.
“It is no secret that you are extraordinary, Wendy. But I think you can be even better,” Dr. Mayer says in the clip. “I would like to help you with that.”
“Thank you, but I’m not in the market for a performance coach,” Wendy fires back.
“I was suggesting therapy. Isn’t that why you’re here?” Dr. Mayer asks.

ABC has formally ordered a comedy pilot based on the BAFTA-winning BBC series Motherland.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie Kemper will topline the pilot, titled Drop-Off, from Lionsgate Television — which owns worldwide rights to Motherland — and ABC Signature. The originals’s creators, Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh and Helen Serafinowicz, are among the executive producers, as is Kemper. Julieanne Smolinski (ABC’s Home Economics) is writing and exec producing the pilot, and Michael Showalter (The Dropout) will direct.
Drop-Off will follow Julia (Kemper), a working mom for whom nothing is working, so she goes looking for her village. With the help of new friends Calvin and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time.
Motherland has aired three seasons on BBC Two (it streams on AMC+ in the United States) and won the BAFTA Award for best scripted comedy last year.

Premiering in 2020, “The Circle” is a US Netflix reality TV show based on the popular British series of the same name. Each season a group of strangers enters a colorfully decorated apartment building and engages in chats, games and blockings with each other all while remaining completely anonymous. In “The Circle,” you can choose to play as yourself or as someone entirely different, aka a catfish. Michelle Buteau hosts the fun and flirty program, though she doesn’t get to officially meet the contestants until the finale, when the 100,000 prize is given to the player who the others rated the highest. There are various other versions of the social media game show around the world, including in France and Brazil, but the photo gallery above highlights “The Circle” winners and finalists from the US Netflix seasons.

It’s been a decade since Lena Dunham was the voice of her generation. Or, well, a voice of a generation.
HBO series “Girls” revolutionized the TV landscape when it premiered on April 15, 2012. The series, created by Dunham, who also starred in, executive-produced, wrote, and directed the show, first debuted at SXSW before its TV premiere and eventual five Emmy Award nominations that year. Jenni Konner served as co-showrunner and producer while Judd Apatow also executive produced.
“Girls” stars Dunham as 20-something struggling writer Hannah Horvath, who has one foot in adolescence thanks to an allowance from her parents. After she’s informed she’s been financially cut off two years after graduating from a liberal arts college, Hannah embarks on navigating New York City by experiencing one mistake at a time.
Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Allison Williams play Hannah’s eccentric and at times codependent circle of friends.

Former ‘Silicon Valley’ star T.J. Miller will not face a federal charge of calling in a fake bomb threat after prosecutors in Connecticut moved Thursday to dismiss the case.
Miller was arrested in April 2018 at La Guardia Airport in New York after allegedly making a false call about a bomb threat on an Amtrak train. Prosecutors said Thursday that Miller’s past brain surgery influenced the decision to drop the case. Miller has also committed to paying the costs of the law enforcement response to the bogus threat.
“The government makes this request based upon: (1) expert medical analyses and reports regarding the defendant’s prior brain surgery and its continued neurological impacts, which cast doubt upon the requisite legal element of ‘intent’ to commit the charged offense(of what turned out to be a false 911 call); and (2) the defendant having entered agreements both to make full financial restitution for the...

Blend one well-known name with scandal; add an appealing subject. Bake in theatrical visibility and fold in home-friendly pricing. Best served with stale alternatives. With this well-tested recipe for VOD success, the long-delayed “City of Lies” stands out this week.
The troubled 2018 film stars Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker as Los Angeles detectives investigating the murders of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. Open Road filed for bankruptcy shortly after it acquired the film. Legal and pandemic issues followed, and then Saban stepped in. A March 19 theater release roused $565,000; two weeks later, it debuted on VOD. It’s a trajectory similar to the one recently enjoyed by the disgraced Armie Hammer, who stars opposite Gary Oldman in another VOD hit, “Crisis.”
Priced at $6.99, “City of Lies” took first place at AppleTV, #4 at GooglePlay (both ranking by number of rentals) and an impressive fourth place at FandangoNow (which lists by revenue earned...

Netflix is the king of the streaming world until proven otherwise. But in recent months the streamer’s lists of new releases have looked relatively sparse as competing media conglomerates remove their titles from Netflix’s library. With its list of new releases for April 2021, however, Netflix appears to have its original production machine operating at high capacity once again.
There are plenty of intriguing Netflix original series and films this month. The one that appears to have the highest blockbuster potential though is the series Shadow and Bone on April 23. Shadow and Bone is adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha-verse trilogy and should bring another compelling sci-fi/fantasy universe to the streaming world.

Mandy Patinkin and Lena Dunham are set to star in “Iron Box,” the next film from the director of “And Tomorrow the Entire World,” Julia von Heinz.
Von Heinz’s “And Tomorrow the Entire World” is Germany’s submission to the Best International Feature race for the Oscars and was just acquired by Netflix.
“Iron Box” tells the story of a New York businesswoman, who takes her aging father back to his homeland in Poland and hopes to discover her own Jewish roots in the process. The film is set in 1990 shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and grapples with the father’s reluctance to return to his homeland after escaping from the region during the Holocaust.
It will be the third part of von Heinz’s “Aftermath Trilogy,” which includes “And Tomorrow the Entire World” and 2013’s “Hanna’s Journey,” both of which explore the legacy of the Nazis on post-war Germany.

In theory, The Stand In might sound promising. It stars Drew Barrymore, was written by Four Lions and Peep Show scribe Sam Bain and directed by Jamie Babbit (cult queer classic But I’m a Cheerleader, plus some excellent TV episodes for Silicon Valley and Russian Doll). There are a ton of names in cameo roles (Ellie Kemper, Andrew Rannells and Lena Dunham to name but a few), all enlisted in what could have been a smart rethink of those sclerotic comedy tropes: the lookalike-role-swap and the ambitious-understudy-who eclipses-the-star.

Double and Nothing: Babbit Blunders on Binary Barrymore
Jamie Babbit doubles down on Drew Barrymore for her sixth feature, The Stand In, a somewhat standard riff on two unrelated lookalikes trading places in a superficial simulacrum of celebrity. It’s been five years since Babbit’s last feature, 2015’s Addicted to Fresno, and the director’s indie aesthetics have often been part of her oeuvre’s ragtag charm, from her blazing inception with 1999’s But I’m a Cheerleader and on to various playful items, like the pulp genre enjoyments of The Quiet (2005) and even 2012’s Breaking the Girls.
Having directed a head spinning number of different television episodes for a diverse array of notable television series, it’s a pleasure to find Babbit unveil a new offering, even if the almost alarming amount of cameo appearances in her latest don’t add up to much behind her lead star’s...

Normally, this would be the time of year when audiences could choose between big, glossy popcorn movies and the prestigious art films out for Oscar glory. But of course, Covid-19 has upended the release schedule and extended the awards season a few months longer into 2021.
But before you despair, just think how fortunate you are to get two Meryl Streep movies in the same week — even if it means having to subscribe to two different streaming platforms to see them. On Netflix, Streep joins Nicole Kidman and James Corden in Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of Broadway musical “The Prom,” in which a group of showbiz folks looking for a cause try to shame a small-town PTA into letting a teenage lesbian attend prom. Over on HBO Max, Streep co-stars with Dianne Wiest and Candice Bergen in “Let Them All Talk,” an overdue-reunion drama in which the three play old friends crossing the Atlantic together.

What’s a bigger offense than a movie wasting away a committed Drew Barrymore performance? That would be a movie wasting away two committed Drew Barrymore performances. Alas, here comes “The Stand In,” doing exactly that as a well-intentioned but broad and ill-realized showbiz satire, in which the talented performer plays a pair of characters with polar-opposite existences that intertwine in a painfully unfunny fashion.
Conceived by a promising team — director Jamie Babbit, who made a wholehearted contribution to the LGBTQ canon with her 1999 debut “But I’m A Cheerleader” and “Four Lions” scribe Sam Bain —
On paper, it’s a decent, even hilarious-sounding premise: a “Trading Places”-meets-“All About Eve” comedy of sorts that switches around the lives of a megastar and her stand-in, to dissect fan entitlement, class divergence, the supposed shallowness of the film industry and all the female-specific struggles they culminate in. Sadly, “The Stand In...

When it comes to good decisions, the brass behind “The Stand In” made quite a few, from casting a bonafide mega-star like Drew Barrymore to play a fictional one, Candy Black, to snapping up a talented director like Jamie Babbit to helm it. The screenplay, a tongue-in-cheek Hollywood send-up from “Four Lions” breakout Sam Bain, likely sounded like a safe bet, too. And who wouldn’t want to see a film that includes talents like Holland Taylor, Ellie Kemper, and Michelle Buteau in amusing supporting roles?
The ingredients, oh boy, are they there. The results? Perhaps it would be hyperbolic to call a film like “The Stand In” one of the biggest disappointments of 2020 — that’s a low bar — but given the windfall of prime material and talent that went into the creation of such a messy, mirthless, and just plain mean final product, there’s no other way to put it.

The 41st American Film Market was the first AFM to take place online, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the the world of independent film has kept its chin up amid daunting challenges.
“I would say it’s a comfortable mixture of cautious but buoyant,” said David Garrett, CEO of Mister Smith Entertainment.
AFM opened on the morning of Nov. 9 on a surprisingly upbeat note as drugmaker Pfizer revealed early data from its coronavirus vaccine that showed it is more than 90% effective — good news that offered promise of a return to movie theaters and soundstages in early 2021. Neon’s distribution president Elissa Federoff expressed guarded optimism that North American audiences will return when the Covid-19 crisis begins abating, during the Future of Film Conference.

"Okay everybody, let's flush this turd down the toilet!" Hollywood, eh? Saban Films has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Stand In, an amusing Hollywood-life comedy about an actress and her stand in. From filmmaker Jamie Babbit, The Stand In is the story of a disaffected comedy actress and her ambitious stand-in trading places. Drew Barrymore stars in both roles, and hires her stand-in to take her place at rehab. But of course they both learn lessons in the process. Also starring Michael Zegen, Tj Miller, Holland Taylor, Michelle Buteau, and Ellie Kemper. This looks like a fun concept to mess around with but it seems a bit meh overall. At least Barrymore looks like she's having good fun making this. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jamie Babbit's The Stand In, direct from Saban's YouTube: When ordered to serve a year in rehab, actress...

Stars like Jason Statham, Gerard Butler, Liam Neeson and Ben Affleck have brought a semblance of stability to an unsettled American Film Market this week.
The boom in streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon along with the emergence of new services from Disney, Apple and Warner Bros. has disrupted the traditional business model for the independent sector.
“Netflix wants your movie early now,” noted Bron Studios exec Anjay Nagpal at Friday’s Afm finance conference. “They don’t want it any more after you couldn’t sell it at festivals.”
Jeffrey Greenstein, president of Millennium Media, said at the event that money offered by streamers has made it tougher to sign name actors such as Butler — who has done a trio of “Fallen” movies for Millennium.

Today in "news I'm feeling very conflicted about," I just learned that Zac Efron almost nabbed the starring role in The Perfect Date - y'know, the role that was ultimately portrayed by Netflix's favorite heartthrob, Noah Centineo. On one hand, I couldn't imagine a more perfect Brooks Rattigan than Centineo, as his chemistry with costar Laura Marano is impossibly palpable. But at the same time, Efron is my Og onscreen crush, and I can't help but wonder what could have been if he were in Brooks's shoes, acting as a stand-in date for various girls to rake in college tuition money.

It's a tale as old as time: boy meets girl after boy gets paid to take girl to her school dance and they fall in love after a whirlwind of hijinks that include boy fake-dating various other girls and girl attempting to make nice with coffee-obsessed schoolmate . . . on second thought, maybe Netflix's newest film, The Perfect Date, isn't your typical romantic comedy.
Considering how the streaming site has perfected the art of rom-coms as of late, it's obvious that it knows exactly what it's doing, and this Noah Centineo and Laura Marano-led flick is another stellar addition to Netflix's ever-growing collection.
