Mexico’s Mauricio Ochmann is re-teaming with director Pitipol Ybarra for the Mexican remake of the 2018 German hit “25 Km/H” from Sony Pictures Intl. Prods. (Spip).
Ochmann and Ybarra previously collaborated on family drama “Ya Veremos,” which Pantelion/Lionsgate released in the U.S. on Labor Day weekend in 2018. Drama topped the specialty releases that weekend, grossing an estimated $1.8 million over the three-day holiday.
In “25 Km/H,” an estranged brother and sister reunite at their father’s funeral and make a spur of the moment decision to fulfill their childhood dream of driving across Mexico on their old motorbikes. The cross-country adventure allows them to mend their relationship and bring some renewed purpose to their lives.
“We honestly can’t believe our good fortune to be able to reteam Mauricio and Pitipol for this title,” said Laine Kline, head of Spip. “As a duo, they bring that rare quality that...

In line with its continued bid to release a diversity of strong titles, Cinepolis Distribution has picked up all worldwide distribution rights to horror drama “My Favorite Birthday” (“Mi Cumpleaños Favorito”) by helmer-scribe Agustin ‘Oso’ Tapia (“Club Eutanasia”).
Tapia has described “Birthday” as “a story where two genres collide: Film noir with the supernatural.” The horror pic follows a young girl about to turn seven who receives a magical puppet theater for her birthday. The unusual gift allows her to spy on unsuspecting adults around her.
Seasoned film and TV producer Leonardo Zimbron and genre producer Beatriz Bouras (“Influencia”) are producing the drama, which is currently shooting on location.
Fernanda Castillo, wildly popular for her performance in Mexican box office hit “Ya Veremos,” leads the cast along with Juan Rios and Ivan Arana.

Morelia, Mexico — In Morelia for multiple reasons, outgoing Imcine director general Jorge Sanchez sat with Variety in an exclusive interview to take stock of his tenure, which ends Nov. 30.
Since he joined Mexico’s national film institute on Jan. 14, 2013, Sanchez has presided over a sea-change in Mexico’s entertainment industry. New public and private initiatives have brought a surge in production, for one. “We’ve seen 182 feature-length productions this year; the number of shorts made are innumerable,” said Sanchez, also noting that total admissions have nearly doubled from 75 million in the previous administration to 148 million during his six-year tenure.
Up to Oct. 19, 80 local films bowed in cinemas nationwide, 13 more than the same period last year, he added. In contrast to some countries in Latin America, Mexican moviegoers are coming in droves to support their homegrown films. Local cinema currently has a 10% share of 260 million admissions to date, Sanchez said. This...

Pantelion/Lionsgate Ya Veremos opened in 369 locations, grossing an estimated $1,800,000 in the three-day. The company is estimating a $2.27M gross for the entire weekend, for a 4-day $6,165 average. There was also Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos which opened in early September 2015, which had a cume of $9M.

The summer 2018 box office is officially ending on a high note.
An August surge is thanks partially to “Crazy Rich Asians,” the Warner Bros. romantic comedy that is still doing crazy good business in North America. Jon M. Chu’s film will top the domestic box office for the third week in a row with estimates showing it could make another $27 million to $30 million over Labor Day Weekend. It generated a three-day tally of $22 million in 3,865 locations, dropping just 10% in its third outing and bringing its domestic total to $110 million.
Following “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” “Black Panther,” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Crazy Rich Asians” is the fourth film this year to top the domestic box office three weekends in a row.

Five years ago — almost to the date — Pantelion Films, the Spanish-language and bilingual outfit from Lionsgate and Mexico’s Televisa, released the smash hit “Instructions Not Including,” starring Eugenio Derbez. Turning its leading man into a bankable movie star, the dramedy about a father raising his long-lost prepubescent daughter scored hugely with audiences both in its homeland and stateside with record-breaking grosses in both markets.
After a long string of box-office triumphs, from PG-13 comedies to an animated feature and even a gender-reversed remake of 1987’s “Overboard” (starring Derbez), the production company and distributor has established itself as an enviable venture, catering to its core audience in the U.S. (Latino immigrants familiar with homegrown talent) and expanding into the Anglo space via collaborations with popular American comedians. Bittersweet drama Ya Veremos (We’ll See) has posted the second-biggest opening weekend ever for a Mexican film in its home market, beating out Mission: Impossible — Fallout (in its second week), Christopher Robin and other studio fare in the process.

Lionsgate has moved the next in the Tyler Perry franchise, A Madea Family Funeral out of 2018 and into next year. The film will now open on March 1, 2019 in wide release coming out of the fall 2018 where it was unset. Family Funeral is the eighth film in the franchise that started in 2006.
In releasing the film on March 1, the title is on the same date that Lionsgate has the Daisy Ridley, Tom Holland starring Chaos Walking from director Doug Liman in wide release, so something’s gotta eventually give. The film will also be on the same date as How To Train Your Dragon: Hidden World from Universal and The Kid Who Would Be King from 20th Century Fox.
