Alfredo Castro, an absolute lead or co-star in seven Pablo Larraín films and one of the highest-regarded of actors in Latin America, is set to head the choral cast of “Three Dark Nights” (“Tres noches negras”), the third feature from Spanish-Chilean Theo Court.
“Three Dark Nights” follows up Court’s “White on White,” also starring Castro, an actor described by Variety as “reliably superb,” which won a best director and Fipresci Prize at 2019’s Venice Horizons. It went on to become Chile’s submission for the international feature Oscar, establishing Court as a talent to track.
In further news, Samuel M. Delgado, co-writer and co-director of “They Carry Death” and a writer with Court of “White on White,” has been brought on board as script consultant.
“Three Dark Nights” is one of the highest-profile of 15 projects which will be brought to market at September’s Europe-Latin American Co-Production Forum.

The Podcast Academy, a group of 1,000-plus industry creators and executives, awarded Campside Media and Sony Music Entertainment’s Chameleon: Wild Boys with the top honor at this year’s 2023 Ambie Awards.
Wild Boys, which serves as the third season of Campside’s Chameleon series, uncovers the story of two young men who claimed to have been raised in the wilderness in British Columbia and proceeded to fool a small town. The eight-part series was led by Sam Mullins with producer Abukar Adan, senior producer Ashleyanne Krigbaum, editor Karen Duffin and ep Matthew Shaer.
“I had nothing happening in my career. I had two young kids, I was working in a taco restaurant, and I never made a podcast before. And Campside deserves so much credit because I cold-emailed these guys, and they just believed in the story, and they believed in me, and they changed my life, and I’ll never forget it,...

Niña Niño Films’ “Outsider Girls” (“Las Demás”), the debut feature of rising Chilean talent Alexandra Hyland, which world premieres in the Bright Future sidebar of Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam, has bowed its trailer exclusively with Variety.
Hyland was named one of Variety’s Five Chilean Talents to Watch in 2018. Her feature debut follows best friends Gaby (played by Alicia Luz Rodriguez) and Rafa (Nicole Sazo), two college girls whose pink-hued oasis is disrupted when Rafa gets pregnant after a night of debauchery. Given Chile’s ultra-conservative society, abortion is illegal except in extreme cases. They set out to earn enough to pay for the pricey abortion pills through a series of oddball part-time jobs, straining their friendship in the process.
Produced by Maltrato Films and Niña Niño Films, the film reflects one of the burning issues in Chilean society where its increasingly emancipated women have demanded an easing of restrictions on abortion.

If a local village warlord discovers he’s in a movie titled Goliath, he better watch his back. It doesn’t matter what his origin story is—and Poshaev (Daniyar Alshinov) has a bloody one—when power is never absolute. Yes, the villagers hail him as a hero for using his formidable presence to extort jobs for the community at a foreign investment firm’s tungsten mine. Yes, he works to keep drugs out of his domain by ruthlessly gunning down any rival gangs who dare to bring it across his borders. He’s still just a man, though. Still at the whims of those he trusts to stand by his side with guns in their hands. They’re the ones to worry about. They’re the ones with something to gain.
The first two-thirds of Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s film are interesting precisely because the man everyone fears might seek...

When Brian Tyree Henry punched his ticket for Sony’s “Bullet Train,” he instantly realized that this movie would be a ride unlike any other.
The film follows Brad Pitt’s unlucky assassin, codenamed “Ladybug” as he aims to complete a snatch-and-grab job that goes completely off the rails as he fights off an ever-growing number of fellow assassins with their own agendas.
“I really had not seen a story like this in quite some time, with such crazy characters in such crazy circumstances, all trying to kill each other on a train,” Henry told Variety over Zoom in late July, shortly before the movie’s debut. “I had always dreamt of being a part of something like that.”
The ensemble cast is populated with mysterious and nefarious characters, including his “Atlanta” co-star Zazie Beetz as “The Hornet” and Bad Bunny as “The Wolf.” Henry plays Lemon, a blonde-haired, British...

Boutique sales agency Patra Spanou Film has acquired the international sales rights of Roberto Doveris’ “Proyecto Fantasma” (“Ghost Project”), an indie comedy with dramatic and spooky moments. The Chilean film will world premiere next week in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
It is Doveris’ second film after the youth drama ”Las Plantas,” which won Best Film in Berlinale’s Generation 14plus section. Doveris was also a producer on “El Principe” by Sebastian Muñoz, winner of the Queer Lion in Venice, and “(Im)Patient” by Constanza Fernández, Audience Award winner in Huelva. “Las Plantas” and “El Principe” are also represented by Patra Spanou.
“Proyecto Fantasma” centers Pablo, a young actor who dreams of starring in a film, but in order to pay the bills he has to work as a simulated patient in medical schools and in weird sessions of alternative therapies. And it is not just his career that becomes stuck.

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

The life of England’s Prince George is being parodied in HBO Max’s The Prince, the 12-episode series premiering in one full batch at midnight Thursday. The project was originally delayed in May after the death of Prince Phillip.
The Prince is a biting, satirical look at the life of Prince George of Cambridge as he navigates the trials and tribulations of being a royal child. The youngest heir to the British throne will be voiced by creator Gary Janetti, who popularized the character and his royal adventures via his Instagram page.
By the looks of the new trailer, neither Prince Harry (Orlando Bloom), his wife Duchess Megan Markle (Condola Rashad) nor the rest of the family will be spared in the name of comedy—not even Queen Elizabeth (Frances de la Tour).
Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens will be pulling double duty, voicing both Prince Charles and Prince Phillip,...

Exclusive: We have learned that Bruce Willis and John Travolta are starring together again for the first time in 27 years in the Chuck Russell-directed action pic Paradise City. Production starts this Monday in Maui, Hawaii.
Willis plays renegade bounty hunter, Ryan Swan, who must carve his way through the Hawaiian crime world to wreak vengeance on the kingpin, played by Travolta, who murdered his father. I’m told the project is billed as being similar to Miami Vice but with bounty hunters instead of cops. Thai actress and model Praya Lundberg has landed the lead female role.
Though Paradise City technically reps the fourth time that Willis and Travolta are billed on a movie together, they only worked onscreen in the 1994 Oscar-winning $214M-grossing Quentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction respectively as boxer Butch Coolidge and mob guy Vincent Vega. Check out their scene below from that pic. Prior to that...

Not the right time. On Sunday, May 9, it was revealed that the HBO Max animated series satirizing the British royal family, titled The Prince, has delayed its spring premiere date. Why? Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, The Prince features a less than flattering portrayal of the late Prince Philip. And, as a statement from the streaming service indicated, they are being mindful of those who may still be mourning the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away in April at 99. "We were saddened to learn of Prince Philip's passing and will adjust plans for the series debut," a rep said in a statement to THR. "A new date will be announced at a later time." As E! Creator Gary Janetti posted to Instagram that satirical cartoon was “coming soon” just five days before Prince Philip passed
HBO Max has delayed the debut of Gary Janetti’s animated series “The Prince” following the April death of Prince Philip.
“We were saddened to learn of Prince Philip’s passing and will adjust plans for the series debut,” a spokesperson for HBO Max said in a statement. “A new date will be announced at a later time.”

Longtime 20th animation exec Marci Proietto has been tapped to lead Disney Television Studios’ new production unit, 20th Television Animation, which currently has 11 series in production.
Under Proietto’s leadership as executive vice president of the unit, 20th Television Animation will continue to manage and produce the company’s long-running series, including “Family Guy,” “American Dad,” “Bob’s Burgers” and “The Simpsons,” as well as Apple TV Plus’ “Central Park,” Hulu’s “Solar Opposites” and the streamer’s recently ordered “Koala Man.”
Through the new structure, those shows will no longer fall under 20th Television’s purview. Similar to the newly formed Walt Disney Television Alternative led by Rob Mills, Proietto and her new production unit will report to Walt Disney Television president of entertainment Craig Hunegs.

Disney Television Studios is doubling down on adult animation with the launch of a new division devoted to the genre and has tapped 20th Century Television veteran Marci Proietto to run it.
The company has launched 20th Television Animation, a new unit to develop and produce animated series and house its library of existing hits such as The Simpsons and Family Guy.
The move means that these legacy shows, which also include American Dad and Bob’s Burgers, will no longer be produced by 20th Television with all animated programming coming out of the new Proietto-led unit.
It is a similar move to the one made to launch Walt Disney Television Alternative, a new non-scripted production unit run by Rob Mills.

20th Television has launched a new animation production unit led by longtime animation exec Marci Proietto, the studio announced Monday.
Proietto will serve as executive vice president of 20th Television Animation, overseeing all animated series, including the studio’s 11 current series and other projects in development. She will report to Walt Disney Television’s president of entertainment, Craig Hunegs.
The move follows a similar decision by Walt Disney Television last month to spin off alternative series into a separate production unit led by ABC’s Rob Mills.
“Many of the greatest family sitcoms on television – ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘Family Guy,’ ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ ‘Solar Opposites,’ ‘Central Park,’ ‘The Great North’ and the list goes on – come from the genius creators 20th Television Animation has assembled and nurtured over the past two decades,” Hunegs said in a statement. “Marci has been a part of all of these phenomenal successes. Ecuador’s Cineática Films has boarded “Slay the Dragon” (“Matar el Dragon”) the third directorial outing by Chilean helmer-producer Roberto Doveris of Niña Niño Films, whose producing credits include Venice 2019 Queer Lion winner, “The Prince.”

San Sebastian’s Tabakalera, a former tobacco factory repurposed as a hub of cultural activity for the Basque region with close ties to the city’s film festival, has launched the 2deo Serieak, an ambitious, international program developed to tutor, guide and support projects from TV series creators, producers and scriptwriters. The new initiative is backed by 2deo, Tabakalera’s audiovisual laboratory, and promoted by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa in collaboration with the San Sebastian Festival.
For the Tabakalera, the program represents a further step forward in the promotion and dissemination of Spanish, and more specifically Basque culture and talent, perhaps best exemplified by the recent global success of HBO Europe’s “Patria,” the company’s first Spanish-language original which can now be seen HBO Max.

Exclusive: Chilean prison drama The Prince has been effectively banned from Amazon Prime UK after distributor Peccadillo Pictures was informed the movie contained “offensive content” that clashed with the streamer’s guidelines.
The film is an unflinching look at life in a men’s prison set amidst the political upheaval of Chile in the 1970s. It contains explicit and dark content but has been widely praised for its uncompromising handling of its subject matter, including winning the Queer Lion Award at Venice Film Festival last year.
Many titles are self-uploaded to Amazon by distributors for Tvod releases, with the web giant taking a share of money earned. All releases are however subject to Amazon’s Content Policy Guidelines, which contain rules against “sexually explicit content” as well as “violent or graphic content.”
Surprisingly, the DVD of the film, which is the same version, is still available to purchase via Amazon.
