During filming at the Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, WV, the production crew was not permitted to use any wireless microphones, as the entire area was deemed a 'radio quiet zone'. Wireless mics would have interfered with the sensitivity of the many radio telescopes on site.
The opening sequence was filmed at the Ohio History Center's Archives Library in Columbus, Ohio, and the actual 'Wow! Signal' artifact was used.
Several clean copies of the data printouts were made for the reenactment scenes. This was achieved by digitally removing all of the markings from the original 'Wow! Signal' scan, printing it and pasting it on sheets of continuous feed printer paper. This allowed the actor to circle the '6EQUJ5' marking with a red pen, just as Jerry Ehman did in 1977.
The man who delivers the printouts to Jerry Ehman's house in the reenactment scene is the film's art director, Eric Brown.
