Whatever one thinks of the highly controversial TV series Euphoria, there’s one thing no one can deny. No show of this era has been a better launching point for the careers of young movie stars. Zendaya is currently enjoying huge success on the big screen, thanks to Dune: Part Two and Challengers, while Sydney Sweeney is just on the other side of a rare rom-com box office success with Anyone But You and has also just produced and starred in the excellent horror flick Immaculate. Jacob Elordi received a bit of praise for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the Sofia Coppola film Priscilla last year and will next play Frankenstein’s Monster for Guillermo del Toro.
Next up is Hunter Schafer, who is set to splatter the screen in blood with the very creepy-looking horror film Cuckoo. This isn’t her first film role, of course. The young...

“Euphoria” breakout Hunter Schafer is playing yet another teen trying to outrun her familial drama, except this time, it’s a surreal matter of life or death. Schafer leads “Cuckoo,” written and directed by “Luz” filmmaker Tilman Singer.
Six years after Singer’s 2018 feature debut, “Cuckoo” centers on 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who is forced to leave her American home to live with her father (Márton Csókás) in a resort in the German Alps with his new wife (Jessica Henwick) and family. Yet it’s her father’s boss Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) and his obsession with Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) that unlocks a larger, more sinister presence at the resort. Gretchen becomes haunted by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Jan Bluthardt and Greta Fernandez also star in the horror film.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star Dan Stevens truly has a spring in his step right now.
Over the next five months, the English actor has three unique genre films hitting theaters, beginning with Friday’s Godzilla x Kong, which marks his long-awaited reunion with his The Guest director, Adam Wingard. A decade ago, Wingard cast Stevens as David Collins, an unhinged super soldier who ultimately terrorizes the family of a fallen friend and fellow soldier, and the project served as the London native’s breakout feature film role. The Guest continues to increase its cult status with each passing year, and Stevens and Wingard, as well as writer Simon Barrett, have fielded countless requests for a sequel ever since.

Euphoria star Hunter Schafer stole the show at the Berlin Film Festival press conference on Friday for Tilman Singer’s horror movie Cuckoo which is world premiering at the city’s 2,500-capacity Verti Music Hall this evening.
Schafer stars as Gretchen who travels to a resort town in German Alps with her father and stepmother where she is drawn into a conspiracy involving bizarre experiments by the resort’s owner that echo back generations.
Following press screenings ahead of this evening’s premiere, the movie is already generating buzz among genre and horror fans.
Hailed as a new “Scream Queen” by one of the journalists at the press conference, Schafer double checked what they meant before replying.
“A scream queen is by definition someone who does a lot of horror movies, right?,” she asked, before suggesting in her answer that she was not planning to focus uniquely on horror in the future.

What is “Cuckoo” about? What actually happens in it? How important is it for a movie to make sense? We can’t answer any of these questions. And nor can “Cuckoo,” an undoubtedly well-made and almost-interesting psychological thriller about a strange Alpine resort where — and we can’t stress this enough — it’s not clear what actually happens.
Some basic bits are, however, clear: Hunter Schafer is definitely in it, as Gretchen, a 17-year-old girl and general tortured soul forced to move in with her dad Luis (Marton Csokas), step-mom Beth (Jessica Henwick), and young step-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) after the death of her mother. Gretchen insists on having nothing to do with Alma, an arbitrarily cruel stance seemingly for the sake of a redemption arc later in the film.
The premise of “Cuckoo” is that something odd involving impregnation and murder is going on at the resort, which Gretchen...

Tilman Singer, emerging as a distinctive voice in the horror genre with his debut, Luz (2018), is set to captivate the horror community once again with his upcoming film, Cuckoo. Slated for release on May 3, this film promises to blend psychological horror with supernatural elements against the hauntingly beautiful backdrop of the German Alps.
The Plot of Cuckoo
At the heart of Cuckoo is the story of 17-year-old Gretchen, who, with great reluctance, moves to join her father and his new family in a resort nestled in the German Alps. The move introduces Gretchen to her mute half-sister, Alma, and Mr. König, her father’s enigmatic boss, whose peculiar interest in Alma begins to unsettle Gretchen. The serene setting quickly reveals its darker undercurrents as Gretchen is plagued by unexplained noises and disturbing visions, catapulting her into an investigation that uncovers a deeply unsettling secret that ties back to her family.

"We are your envoys. Your light, your voice on Earth." Dark Sky has released an official US trailer for a Colombian fantasy western horror titled Luz: The Flower of Evil, originally known as just Luz (not to be confused with the German horror film Luz). This premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year, and also stopped by the Morbido Film Festival in Mexico. The leader of an isolated cult in the highlands of Colombia finds himself under attack from his followers, including his three daughters, after bringing a false messiah into the community. A parable about God and religion and love and freedom. The film stars Yuri Vargas, Jim Muñoz, Conrado Osorio, Sharon Guzman, Andrea Esquivel, and Daniel Páez. From the looks of it, this seems to be a hyper-stylized, haunting fantasy-western exploring the power that God has over us. Here's the US trailer (+ poster) for Juan Diego Escobar Alzate...

Director Yedidya Gorsetman and scenarist Mark Leidner’s first feature “Jammed” was a well-reviewed (if little-seen) comedy set in the twirlydancing stoner universe of a jam-band festival. Their sophomore effort does an about-face from that rainbow tie-dye milieu to the monochrome severity of a black-and-white neo-noir. But surface aesthetics are hardly the only factor that shifts in “Empathy, Inc.,” a clever indie suspense that draws on fantasy-tinged notions of virtual reality and identity exchange to create an ingenious tale more in the realm of an intimately-scaled thriller than sci-fi. Opening on a single Los Angeles screen on Sept. 6, with more cities added Sept. 13 and VOD launch on the 24th, this arresting tale should not only prove a career leg-up for all involved, it might also attract remake offers.

"My girlfriend has a very special gift." Screen Media Film has debuted an official Us trailer for the indie German horror thriller titled Luz, opening in select Us theaters this month after playing at film festivals all throughout last year - including Berlinale, Sitges, Fantastic Fest, Fantasia, Morbido, and many more. In this slick and disturbing horror film, Luz is a young cab driver fleeing from the grasp of a possessed woman, whose confession could endanger the lives of everyone who crosses her path. We featured a teaser trailer for this last year after it started picking up rave reviews. Luana Velis stars as Luz, and the full cast includes Johannes Benecke, Jan Bluthardt, Lilli Lorenz, Julia Riedler, and Nadja Stübiger. This is being described as "unapologetically strange and utterly fearless" and looks like a mesmerizing possession thriller. There's also a killer new poster for this film seen below the trailer.

Thirty Three Management has signed German filmmaker Tilman Singer, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
Singer's feature debut, Luz, was his Academy of Media Arts Cologne senior thesis film and premiered last year at the Berlin International Film Festival. In THR's review, critic John DeFore praised the supernatural thriller as "an effective exercise in stylistic pastiche" and "a refreshing take on demonic possession in which the usual fright-flick clichés are nowhere to be found."

It’s the most, wonderful time, of the year. In two weeks I will be returning to my happy place, Cdmx, for the 2018 edition of the Morbido Film Fest. As always mi Familia de Morbido have put together a top notch program this year. I look forward to seeing who will win the battle of the Giallo projects, the Onetti Brothers’ Abrakadabra or Mirada de cristal from Ezequiel Endelman y Leandro Montejano who will be at the festival this year. I also look forward to discovering and giving focus to the other IberoAmerican films during the festival. International titles coming to Cdmx include Lifechanger, The Ranger, the amazing One Cut of the Dead, Mandy, Starfish, Cam, Luz, Violence Voyager and the sensually dangerous...

News today that Screen Media have acquired the North American rights for Tilman Singer's amazing and trippy horror film Luz. Screen Media are already planning a theatrical release in the first quarter of 2019 in the U.S. As is almost always the case with North American acquisitions Canada can apparently suck it. We are not familiar enough with Screen Media to know what their usual release strategy is. Hopefully, they also have a deal with at least an online streaming provider so that we here in Canada who have not seen this amazing film can watch Luz on some size of screen as well. Theatrical would be amazing though, wink wink. Screen Media announced today it has acquired all North American rights for Tilman...

As far as graduate thesis films go, Luz goes above and beyond the curriculum. German writer-director Tilman Singer‘s debut film originally began as a film-studies thesis project, but had more than enough style and verve to escape into the real world. Luz is both a bold experiment in horror and a throwback thriller that calls back to the […]

Time to meet Luz. Yellow Veil Pictures has released an entrancing new teaser trailer for a hypnotic thriller titled Luz, from German filmmaker Tilman Singer. This already premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this year, and played Fantasia in the summer; it will next stop by Fantastic Fest and the Sitges Film Festival later this fall. Luz, a young cabdriver, drags herself into the brightly lit entrance of a run-down police station. A demonic entity follows her, determined to finally be close to the woman it loves. Luana Velis stars as Luz, and the full cast includes Johannes Benecke, Jan Bluthardt, Lilli Lorenz, Julia Riedler, and Nadja Stübiger. The film already received some rave reviews at other fests, calling it "unapologetically strange and utterly fearless." It certainly looks strange, with a very nice, old school vibe. Really digging this teaser. Here's the first Us teaser trailer (+ new poster) for Tilman Singer's Luz,...

I don’t know about you but I’m getting one hell of an Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession vibe from the first feature from German writer/director Tilman Singer’s film Luz. Not that that’s a bad thing! In fact, the film may have just shot to the (near) top of my must-see list. Especially considering the movie was shot on 16mm and contains […]
