Spearheaded by Hostel and the Saw franchise, the ‘torture porn’ sub-genre of horror (an unfair title perhaps) was not well-liked at the time despite some big money makers, and it’s not something film lovers have been desperately wanting a resurgence of. But Alive does very much feel like it would fit in that mold from the early 2000’s.
A severely injured man and woman wake up next to each other in an abandoned hospital. The remember very little about themselves or each other but do have ‘flashbacks’ that attempt to jog their memory. They soon discover who is keeping them locked up when the caretaker/doctor appears and is their only hope to find out who they are and help with any chance of escaping.

After the sharp-witted pleasures of last year's Harpoon, hopes were high for director Rob Grant's next feature. It's a real disappointment, then, to see Alive, a film which spends an hour and a half going nowhere in particular just to embarrass itself with a pay-off that is predictable, underwhelming and fudged in the delivery. Whether or not it works for you may depend in part on your reaction to Angus Macfadyen's mannered performance as the caretaker of a mysterious medical institution, which some people seem to find creepy and others just twee, but even if he makes a favourable impression, the film has precious little else to offer.
Its premise is this: a man and a woman (Thomas Cocquerel and Camille Stopps) wake up in the aforementioned institution with only the vaguest memories of who they are. Both show signs of having been severely injured. Macfadyen's character, the only other.

Canadian distributor Black Fawn Distribution will release Harpoon, this February. This title has already released in the United States, through Epic Pictures. The Canadian release will come in a few formats, including a Blu-ray Combo and Blacklist package. In the film, three friends turn on each other - in the high seas. Food and water run out, with dry land nowhere to be seen. After a theatrical run and release on Digital platforms, in Canada, Harpoon will show again in early February. Harpoon was developed by director Rob Grant. Grant has spoken on the film a number of times. He says of the film's influence: "Harpoon came out of a desperate and angry feeling I was going through at the time. I also felt I had more to say about the nature of friendship, especially toxic friendship, and that’s where it all balloons from (Villain Media)." Almost everyone has...

2019 was truly a gift for horror fans, as we were inundated with tons of amazing content, both on the big and on the small screen as well. In fact, it was hard to keep up with everything, which is why I’m bummed I still haven’t had a chance to catch up with several films that most likely would have ended up on this list. That being said, after taking in more than 300 movies (both horror and non-genre included) and several television series to boot, here’s my rundown of my favorite genre entertainment from 2019:
Please keep in mind that I only include films that have received an official release during 2019, so films like Vfw, First Love, Something Else/After Midnight, Come to Daddy, The Vast of Night, and Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street will most likely have to hang in there until next year.
Enjoy!

It’s that time again. Another year has come to an end and while 2019 was an odd one for horror as far as mainstream titles go, with many household baddies ending up leaving less of a mark than so many awesome indies (in my opinion), there was still a lot to like over the last twelve months.

Munro Chambers really impressed earlier this year with a stellar performance in the hugely entertaining Harpoon (review) so when his name appeared on the credit list of Entangled, I was instantly drawn to the movie which on closer review, sounded like it would be right up my alley.
Chambers, along with Paloma Kwiatkowski, Robert Naylor, and Sandra Mae Frank, star as a group of college students experimenting with time travel. Their experiments yield results but they don't realize just how successful their experiments are until months after one of them is tragically killed in a car accident and the dead colleague appears seemingly out of nowhere and carries on as if nothing has...

Director Kurtis David Harder, producer of Harpoon and What Keeps You Alive, has crafted a film whose title, Spiral, is symbolic of the endless cycle of hate that plagues the world and America in particular.
Set in 1995, the film follows same-sex interracial couple Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) and Aaron (Ari Cohen) who, along with Aaron’s teenage daughter Kayla (Jennifer Laporte), are moving out of the big city and into a small town; however, Malik is haunted by trauma in his past, as the film opens with a flashback of Malik seeing his ex-boyfriend’s murder. This hate crime is seen in flashes throughout Spiral, but despite the violence, Malik speaks of the bravery that comes with living your life loud and proud and he isn’t afraid to show off his man in this new very white, very straight neighborhood. A wonderful dynamic is created, and while they are hit...

As aquatic horror further dominates 2019’s slate, Rob Grant’s Harpoon flashes sharpened fangs despite a lack of predatory creatures. No sharks, no crocodiles, just three “friends” airing their grievances while stranded at sea. After catching the film in Montreal at the Fantasia Film Festival, I’m still waiting for a rival title to dethrone Harpoon’s signature […]

Stars: Munro Chambers, Christopher Gray, Emily Tyra | Written and Directed by Rob Grant
When Richard’s girlfriend Sasha and best friend Jonah give him a spear gun for his birthday, he wants to try it out straight away. The three of them set out for a day trip on a boat, but suspicion and jealousy soon start to get the upper hand. When the boat’s engine fails with no supplies on board, a nerve-wracking struggle for survival ensues that spares nobody’s secrets – or blood.
Wealthy Richard (Christopher Gray) is prone to fits of violent anger, particularly when he believes his girlfriend Sasha (Emily Tyra) is cheating on him with his best friend Jonah (Munro Chambers) — who’s been having worse luck than even his Biblical namesake. Once they reassure him that his fears are unfounded, Richard invites Sasha and Jonah on an excursion aboard his yacht The Naughty Buoy to make amends.

Harpoon
One of the standout films at this year’s Fantasia, Rob Grant’s Harpoon has gone on to make a big impression on the festival circuit. It’s the story of three people stranded together on a boat, their longstanding friendship quickly giving way to treachery – but if you think that sounds like familiar stuff, it will surprise you. I caught up with Rob just before the film’s screening at Grimmfest in Manchester to ask him about the film and its succss.
The Grimmfest directors had taken an interest in his previous films, he says, but it was mainly due Arrow picking up Harpoon that it ended up joining the line-up. He’s in New York as we speak – the film has just premièred there – but is about to fly to Grimmfest, where he’s also looking forward to watching the Soska sisters’ new take on Rabid.

Prolific Canadian writer-director Rob Grant, who’s made five features and one documentary in the last decade, once again puts a limited setting and budget to resourceful use in “Harpoon.” This thriller about three none-too-loyal friends adrift on a yacht made a splash at Fantasia (after a lower-key Rotterdam premiere) with its genre-fan-friendly mix of grisly action and jaunty black comedy.
That balance was particularly successful in Grant’s 2012 “Mon Ami,” wherein two would-be kidnappers kept bungling their way to an ever-higher accidental body count. His latest is slicker but also more glibly mean-spirited, with characters it’s hard to care about and some twists that seem more contrived than clever — or credible. Nonetheless, . It opens in a few U.S. theaters Oct. 4, followed a few days later by Blu-ray and Tvod release.

When their yacht breaks down in isolated ocean waters, three "friends" find out just how much they really hate each other (and what they're capable of doing to each other) in Rob Grant's Harpoon. With the dark comedy coming out in select cinemas and on VOD this October from Dread, we caught up with co-writer/director Rob Grant to discuss assembling his game cast, finding a shooting location at the last minute, the challenges of filming on the water (especially in an area filled with curious kayakers), getting Brett Gelman involved as the movie's narrator, and exploring the "darker side of human behavior."
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Rob, and congratulations on Harpoon! How and when did you get the idea for Harpoon?

Rob Grant's lost-at-sea love triangle thriller Harpoon sales into cinemas, bluray & VOD this October. Last week a new trailer was released. We are a bit tardy with the news but what is a week between friends? Rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension emerge when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean desperate for survival. With plenty of alcohol and very little food and water, emotions run high and their delusions become a reality. As the days stretch on and death seems inevitable, their terrifying truths float to the surface. Harpoon is directed by Rob Grant and stars Munro Chambers (star of cult hit Turbo Kid, Degrassi: The Next...

It’s a tale as old as time. Three friends go off on a beautiful yacht to help mend fences after two of them knock over an urn during a fistfight. You know, exactly the type of hijinks you and your friends get into on a typical Saturday. Well, in the case of the three young people in “Harpoon,” the fistfight is just the beginning of the issues.
As seen in the new trailer for the dark comedy/thriller, Jonah, Sasha, and Richard find themselves on a beautiful yacht in an attempt to help mend their broken friendship after the two men got into a violent altercation.

"The thing about boats is that there's nowhere to run.." Rlje Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror titled Mary, another boat horror movie this year. This one is made by veteran cinematographer Michael Goi, directing his third feature film. Mary is about a family looking to start a charter-boat business that buys a ship that holds terrifying secrets once out on isolated waters. "It becomes horrifyingly clear that they are being lured to an even greater." Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer star, with a cast including Jennifer Esposito, Stefanie Scott, Owen Teague, Michael Landes, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Natalie Jean. This is super creepy, and feels like a film straight out of the 90s, especially with the grainy look of it. That final shot in the trailer is the scariest. As our Fantasia Fest coverage winds down, here’s a double-bill of two new films from actor Munro Chambers, who came to prominence back in 2015 with a little film called Turbo Kid. His latest films see the actor embrace both ends of the character spectrum: hero and villain. Or do they?

Rob Grant's latest thriller Harpoon is the latest entry into the fine collection of movies which take place in one location. In this case, we have a trio of friends on a yacht in the middle of the open ocean.
Richard (Christopher Gray), Jonah (Munro Chambers) and Sasha (Emily Tyra) are long-time friends with a ton of baggage. Richard is loaded and kind of a dick who is also generous to his friends. Sasha is a nurse and also Richard's long-time girlfriend while Jonah is a struggling with the fact that his parents were disappointed in him and because they died during a trip he bought for them; he also feels a little guilty.
Harpoon opens with an ugly fight that then turns into a day trip on Richard's yachts as a feeble attempt to make amends. The trio's day trip turn...

A lean, mean thriller with pitch-black humor pumping through its veins, Harpoon has friendship on its mind. Throughout life, friendships are forged on various foundations of need and utility, but sometimes it’s simply a matter of having grown up together. As you get older and drift apart, that foundation can become weak and precarious. That’s the type of friendship in focus here, where three friends are bound by their lengthy history, but perhaps shouldn’t be. When the trio are left stranded in the middle of the ocean after their yacht breaks down, both their friendships and their lives are tested in harrowing ways.
