If the Hollywood dream factory is about myth-making, a fraction of it is about unraveling those myths through truth-telling. Attentively adapted from Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” writer-director Sofia Coppola’s compassionate, dreamy and lushly designed “Priscilla” is a little bit of both of those dueling Hollywoods.
It’s a rare cinematic opportunity to experience the notably private, known but unknowable Priscilla’s own truthful side of the story, and to see her stormy relationship with the King of Rock and Roll through her heavily-lined and faux-lashed eyes. It’s also a sumptuous bolstering of the Presley myth, a name with endless legends and perspectives attached to it.
Led by a soul-piercingly poignant Cailee Spaeny portraying the title role between the ages of 14 and 24, and a jaw-dropping Jacob Elordi (of “Saltburn”), giving Austin Butler a run for his money as Elvis, “Priscilla” feels richer and all the more resonant thanks to that dichotomy.

Raleigh, North Carolina indie rockers Truth Club have announced their next album, Running from the Chase, due for release on October 6th via Double Double Whammy. Along with today’s announcement comes the new single “Exit Cycle,” which features Indigo De Souza, as well as a run of 2023 tour dates.
Truth Club have enjoyed a steady ascent since the release of their 2019 debut LP Not an Exit. Since then, the band’s three original members — singer/guitarist Travis Harrington, drummer Elise Jaffe, and guitarist/bassist Kameron Vann — added guitarist/bassist and singer Yvonne Chazal to their lineup, with a goal to “hold space for criticism, critique, input, and inspiration from the rest of the band in any context” while making their new record.
One critique Harrington felt of “Exit Cycle” was that it “needed another voice.” So, he called on De Souza — his longtime friend and fellow North Carolinian — whose...

The films were Ok but lacked some luster on the whole. The list of winners of the festival(s) follows. Women filmmakers swept most of the top awards from Competition to Un Certain Regard and Critics’ Week. The market was also Ok, but not great. Rights sold before the festival and during the festival are listed with the winning titles.
The disrupters, the big streamers, were in the background and theatrical rights were being acquired by indie distributors. France’s theatrical exhibition has sprung back to its pre-covid levels while others’ like Germany, Italy and the U.S. remain 30% below.
Read The Film Verdict Summation and Reviews of Cannes Ff 2003 here. Their summation in part:
The most common line heard on the Croisette was that the main section was stuffed with minor films from major directors, which does no one any favors. But there were happy exceptions, which included 83-year-old Marco Bellocchio’s dramatically exciting and thought-provoking Kidnapped, a summing-up of his many films dealing with the Catholic religion and how a child’s cultural identity is created beginning at a young age. Disappointingly, the jury led by two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund overlooked the film entirely when they awarded their prizes.Another classic director who returned in top form was 77-year-old Wim Wenders with two masterful films: Anselm, a ravishing 3D documentary portrait of artist Anselm Kiefer, and Perfect Days, a lyrical Japanese-language character study of a Tokyo toilet attendant. Justly winning the Best Actor prize for his Zen-like performance in the latter title was Koji Yakusho.Cannes Film Festival Winners:

Days after the U.S. House of Representatives approved a measure that would ban TikTok and other apps with ties to the Chinese government, the other chamber of Congress has issued a response. A bipartisan group of Senators led by Mark Warner (D-va) and John Thune (R-sd) has introduced the Restrict Act, which could become the first piece of anti-TikTok legislation to land on the President’s desk.
The House of Representatives bill, named the Data Act, consummated years of anti-TikTok animus by promising to ban apps that send U.S. user data to China. By comparison, the Restrict Act (short for Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology Act) has a broader scope and a slightly lighter touch. If enacted, Warner and Thune’s bill would target apps affiliated with nations like Russia and North Korea in addition to China. Lawmakers would have the...

Clover is a crime action/comedy about a couple of Irish American brothers on the run from a Italian American crime boss, in the company of a precocious girl named Clover. The girl is there to make us think of Kick Ass, but Clover mines a host of other films in the crime action/comedy genre, pretty much to a fault. While the tropes are familiar, Clover puts them together well enough to present a serviceable popcorn entertainment for some audiences. It’s no Snatch, but it might do in a pinch for an afternoon of stay-at-home distraction, if you don’t expect too much..

The mobster comedy is by now such familiar terrain that it ought to have its own nickname, and that familiarity does not make breathing new life into the subgenre easier. Alas, there isn’t much fresh air to be had in “Clover,”
Despite a capable cast and reasonably energetic execution from director Jon Abrahams, this violent caper lacks any real wit or novelty (beyond congratulating itself a bit too much for including a lesbian couple as “hitmen”), ultimately leaning on tired stereotypes rather than doing anything particularly clever with them. Launching on various cable and digital platforms April 3, it’s a just-passable entertainment that may seem better to those who think “Boondock Saints” is an enduring classic.
You can certainly sense that lowbrow cult favorite’s influence in the dynamic between the brothers Callahan, two orphaned “micks” in an unnamed East Coast city running their family’s corner bar. Or at least they were,...

There’s not much new ground covered in Jon Abrahams’ amiable “Clover,” which stuffs a slew of familiar character tropes — bickering Irish brothers, nattily-dressed mafia types, hardened guns-for-hire — into an overcooked crime caper that’s less about evil deeds and more about the people who do them. Yet Abrahams, who also stars in the film, has at least one thing down for his sophomore turn behind the camera: top-notch casting, the kind that can spice up even the blandest of projects. Fortunately for the fledgling filmmaker, “Clover” is

The “final girl theory” is meant to describe the trope in horror films of one female character being the last to survive, having to defeat the killer, and live to tell the tale. While Carol J. Clover originally coined the term in her 1987 essay Her Body, Himself: Gender in the Slasher Film and applied it mainly to American slasher films of the ’70s and ’80s, it’s still used in contemporary cinema in a variety of horror films to describe the surviving female character. As slasher films have seen a decline in popularity since their “golden age,” the use of the term “final girl” has expanded to include different sub-genres of horror films, as well as how the final girls themselves behave throughout the films.
The original meaning of the final girl, as described by Clover in 1987, defined the girl as the sole survivor of the group who has a final confrontation with the villain.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the first winners of its new talent-cultivation program in China, including a young director, an up-and-coming actress, and a line producer on a $127-million-grossing romcom.
Five Chinese artists were named Tuesday as the inaugural honorees of BAFTA’s Breakthrough China program. Among them is young director Bai Xue, whose first feature, “The Crossing,” grossed $1.4 million (RMB9.9 million) in March, and her producer He Bin, who is also an audio engineer. Line producer Ye Ting, who worked on last year’s box-office hit romantic comedy “How Long Will I Love U,” actress and director Bonnie Chen, and games producer Guan Dan, who worked on the full-length live-action interactive work “The Invisible Guardian,” were also selected for the program.
Over the next year, BAFTA will support the five honorees to “build, develop and continue their careers” via meetings, events and introductions in the U.

You might have naively assumed that because Lady Gaga won an Oscar for A Star Is Born and also gave a performance at the award show with costar Bradley Cooper that left the world collectively swooning, that the buzz for the musical drama was officially over. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, we're still very much in the midst of the Born-aissance.
Cooper's Oscar-nominated film will be rereleased in over 1,150 theaters with 12 minutes of new footage included, starting on Friday.
