A24’s political thriller “Civil War” is resonating not just in red states and blue but overseas, too.
Alex Garland’s film, starring Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist who traverses a violently divided United States, has grossed $45.7 million in North America and $20 million internationally. Global ticket sales stand at $67.3 million through Monday, and it’s projected to cross $70 million on Tuesday.
“Civil War” is the first A24 movie to top the domestic box office, and it’s impressively remained the No. 1 film for two consecutive weekends. Given the fiercely U.S.-centric subject matter, it wasn’t clear the film would resonate at the international box office. But “Civil War” has managed to appeal to overseas audiences with the biggest turnout in the United Kingdom, where it has grossed $4.8 million, followed by the Netherlands, where it has grossed $750,000. Over the weekend, the film opened in first place in several smaller moviegoing markets,...

An upcoming independent horror film with Hereditary and The Conjuring vibes is creeping its way toward screens. Screenwriter Lila McLaughlin is stepping behind the camera for her directorial debut, shooting from a script she wrote that sounds bone-chilling in all the best ways. Joining McLaughlin for Don’t Let Them Out are Emily Rios, Louis Ferreira, and Bonnie Root as primary cast members.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Don’t Let Them Out follows “a struggling woman who journeys to a property she has inherited in hopes of selling it to pay off her debts. But upon arriving to the property, the story takes a terrifying turn when the woman is lured into a desperate scavenger hunt down a perilous rabbit hole.”

Missing Pedro Pascal already? We completely understand you – after 2023 literally became the year of big releases with the actor, 2024 seems painfully empty without him.
That's why we've collected the most anticipated projects with Pedro Pascal.
1. Gladiator II
Release Date: November 22, 2024
The filming of the sequel to Ridley Scott's cult epic, Gladiator II, was frozen due to the strikes, but now work on the set has been successfully completed.
Talk of a sequel circulated throughout Hollywood for more than twenty years after the first film's successful release, suggesting almost biblical and fantastic tales of battles in the afterlife.
As a result, Gladiator II moderated its ambitions: Lucius, the nephew of Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix in the first film, will be at the center of the story. As a boy, he was inspired by the exploits of the gladiator Maximus in the arena and will apparently follow in the footsteps of Russell Crowe’s character.

Authenticity holds a lot of value in Hollywood. As much as audiences love to watch remakes, retellings, and sequels, nothing catches their attention more than something original and magnificent. The one studio that is best known for only creating content like this is A24. The perfect example of such a story would be their recently released movie, Civil War.

In the classic style of the studio, the movie features an A-list cast of actors like Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny, and Wagner Moura, but has still managed to remain, somewhat, under the radar. With its recent release, the movie has gotten nothing short of splendid reviews from audiences and critics alike, hinting at a successful future at the box office.

Alex Garland’s dystopian Civil War, about America torn asunder by a president run amok and brutal acts of war committed on ordinary citizens, sparked plenty of speculation — and assumptions — heading into its debut in theaters over the April 12-14 weekend.
Would it be a win in blue states but a losing battle in red states? Would it galvanize those Trumpians eager to view the sort of imagery witnessed during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capital? Or would liberals assume it would be a balm for their point of view, and see them turn out in full force? After all, Hollywood isn’t known for being a bastion of Republicans. Ditto for indie studio A24, which produced the film.

Delivering A24’s biggest debut weekend since Hereditary arrived on $13.6m in 2,964 sites, the story of a journalist, played by Kirsten Dunst, who reports on an unfolding crisis in a divided America not only exceeded box office predictions of $20m, but overperformed in markets ranging from Los Angeles to El Paso in Texas.
Arriving on 3,838 theatres, the $50m production was also the company’s widest release from the outset.

Alex Garland’s Civil War performed close to our expectations this weekend, grossing an estimated $25.7 million (via ComScore’s early numbers) to post what’s easily A24’s biggest opening weekend ever. In fact, it isn’t even close, with Alex Garland’s speculative film almost doubling the previous record holder, Hereditary, which opened with $13.6 million. This is quite a coup for what’s being billed as the studio’s biggest-budget movie ever, which is a still modest $50 million. Given the rave reviews and the fact that it will likely become a water-cooler film, one can expect the film to hold up relatively well over the next few weeks, with it is unlikely anything next weekend is going to over-index unless horror flick Abigail winds up becoming a smash.
Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire dropped a relatively modest 50% in week two to post a $15.4 million weekend, for a $157.9 million total.

April has been a slower month compared to March, but if nothing else, this weekend saw a popular indie studio break a few personal records with what might have been a controversial release. Read on for the weekend box office report.
A24 released Alex Garland‘s fourth feature as a director, “Civil War,” starring Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Maura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman, and Jesse Plemons, into 3,838 theaters on Friday – the studio’s widest release ever. It came into the weekend with a reported production budget of $50 million – another record for the studio – and mostly decent reviews with 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, following a premiere at the SXSW Film and TV Festival.
It was able to make $2.9 million in Thursday and earlier previews, which were compiled into the movie’s $10.8 million opening day, and it then ended with an estimated $25.7 million to take first place on opening weekend.

Director Alex Garland’s provocative dystopian thriller “Civil War” lit up the box office with $25.7 million in its debut. It’s the first A24 movie to lead the charts in North America, setting an opening weekend record for the New York-based specialty studio. It also marks the biggest R-rated start of the year.
Heading into the weekend, “Civil War” was projected to kick off with $15 million to $20 million. Those ticket sales would have been enough to overtake 2018’s “Hereditary” (which opened in fourth place to $13.6 million) as A24’s biggest debut. But the film, starring Kirsten Dunst as a journalist who traverses a violently divided United States, is benefitting from curiosity among moviegoers and premium large formats like Imax and Dolby Cinemas. According to the studio, “Civil War” overperformed in markets like Los Angeles and El Paso, Texas.

Few movie studios can lay claim to the kind of brand name prestige that A24 has. Founded in 2012, the indie distributor has quickly become beloved by cinephiles and the A24 logo alone is enough to draw views to a trailer. It's a reputation that's been well-earned, through great horror movies like "Hereditary" and "Talk to Me" and off-the-wall genre films like "The Green Knight" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once." The latest A24 film comes from filmmaker Alex Garland (whose films "Ex Machina" and "Men" were distributed by A24 in the U.S.), and it has already set a new record for the studio.
"Civil War" is set in an imminent-future nightmare where the United States of America has fractured into multiple warring factions, and follows a group of war journalists as they journey to Washington, D.C., in the hopes of scoring a final interview with the defiant president...

The box office is united behind “Civil War.” A24’s dystopian thriller earned $10.7 million from 3,838 locations across its opening day and preview screenings, putting itself on track for a debut of around $26 million.
The debut figure represents the highest opening day gross ever for A24, besting the $5.1 million earned by 2018’s “Hereditary” in its first screenings. That horror feature still holds the record for the indie banner’s highest opening weekend ever, with a $13.5 million tally — a watermark that “Civil War” should be able to surge above before the end of Saturday. “Civil War” also gets a boost in sales from playing in premium-large format auditoriums like Imax.
It’s a record that the Alex Garland-directed war feature needs to break since it’s also the most expensive feature in the history of A24. “Civil War” cost $50 million to produce, plus additional costs for marketing and distribution. It’s...

When audiences seek movies based on brands, that usually means the likes of Marvel, DC Comics, and Pixar — not studios or distributors.
The exception is A24. It’s something acknowledged by its peers (however grudgingly) and among a growing section of younger cinephiles, for whom “an A24 movie” means something a little weird and potentially cool, maybe great — and reason to take a chance on going to a theater.
Alex Garland‘s “Civil War,” the company’s most expensive film (a reported $50 million) opens this week with tracking that suggests it could open to $20 million or more. That would top any previous A24 opening; its best is “Hereditary,” which opened to $13.5 million in 2018.
Garland’s film checks many of the boxes that have translated into A24’s success. Its director has a strong following, including prior A24 films “Ex Machina” and “Men.” “Civil War” also had a widely publicized festival premiere at SXSW last month.

One of the most acclaimed debuts at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival was writer/director Lucy Kerr’s debut “Family Portrait,” a disquieting drama about a family gathering where the matriarch goes missing. Kerr won the Boccalino d’Oro for Best Director at the Swiss festival. Now, Brooklyn-based indie distribution outfit Factory 25 has acquired worldwide rights to the film, with a theatrical run set to begin at New York City’s Metrograph on June 28. Further engagements and a digital release to follow. Watch the trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, below.
Set at the dawn of Covid, “Family Portrait” follows Katy as she searches for the mother who can’t be found, the film weaving from one member of the family to another. The box office is going to war.
A24 and director Alex Garland’s latest film, the controversial “Civil War,” is opening in theaters this weekend. So far, it’s made $2.9 million at the box office in Thursday previews.
“Civil War” has its sights set on the highest opening weekend ever for an A24 movie. The film, which takes place in a fractured America torn apart by civil war, is projected to make around $20 million in its opening weekend. Some estimates are as high as $24 million and as low as $15 million, but even that would break the A24 record. An opening in the upper range could also unseat Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire,” which has been No. 1 for the past two weeks at the box office.
Director Ari Aster’s horror film “Hereditary” currently holds the highest opening weekend for A24, after it made $13.6 million in 2018. “Hereditary” made $1.3 million in Thursday previews,...

Box office preview: Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ will try its best not to divide the moviegoing nation
After a quieter April opening weekend, we get a slightly busier one with one high profile wide release and a handful of smaller releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big release of the weekend is “Civil War,” filmmaker Alex Garland‘s fourth feature film as a director, and one that is reportedly A24’s biggest budget production, reportedly costing $50 million. Set in a dystopian war-torn future America, the movie stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” as two wartime journalists heading to D.C. to interview the President (Nick Offerman), who is about to be deposed by a group of opposing rebels. The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson.

A24 is a studio that has built up a good name over the last decade and change in Hollywood. It's a name that means something to moviegoers, and that's no small thing. But as the studio looks to compete in an increasingly volatile Hollywood landscape, minor theatrical successes like "Priscilla" and disastrous flops such as "Under the Silver Lake" aren't going to cut it anymore. So, the studio is going bigger and making its biggest bet ever with Alex Garland's "Civil War." The question is, can this politically-charged, unconventional war film break through like a more conventional blockbuster?
Given that Garland's latest carries a $50 million budget, A24 is certainly hoping so. The good news is that the initial numbers suggest that this one will be a winner, at least in the early going. "Civil War" is eyeing an opening between $18 and $24 million when it arrives next weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Before I watched “Civil War,” two publicists working on the dystopian thriller assured me that it isn’t a political film.
In the movie, Kirsten Dunst plays a dogged photojournalist muscling her way through a smoldering Washington D.C., trying to document the bitter conflict between two heavily armed factions tearing America apart. I didn’t buy that it didn’t have something to say about this moment. And neither does Dunst.
“So, do you believe that it’s not political? I mean … it’s an anti war film,” Dunst tells me with a shrug. “This movie, after you see it, you want to talk about it for a while with people. And I think any movie that does that is incredible.”

Convent-set movies occupy a storied place in cinema history—one too vast to attempt summarization in this review. But it’s no matter: Immaculate stands to be a minor entry in both the crowded genre and in Sydney Sweeney’s present ascension to movie stardom. Sweeney produces and recruited Michael Mohan to direct Immaculate after their previous collaborations on TV series Everything Sucks! and erotic-thriller throwback The Voyeurs.
Narratively, Immaculate owes more to Dario Argento’s Suspiria than any nunsploitation picture. The setups are essentially identical: wide-eyed American girl (Sweeney as Sister Cecilia in this case) heads to an all-girls dormitory in Italy. Nefarious plotting by shadowy leaders is unveiled over the course of the narrative.
Both films contain a cold open that sees a young girl attempt escape before meeting her doom. Immaculate’s opening is quite tense, its best sequence. In the aftermath of this chilling intro, the...

The history of cinema is littered with weird movies. For certain viewers these are special experiences, be it something for a very specific type of person to enjoy, or more of a challenge to be endured. It's difficult for me to say what camp "Sasquatch Sunset" falls into (that's probably for the individual to decide), but I can say with the utmost confidence that it is far and away the weirdest movie of 2024 thus far. If anything tops it before year's end, it's going to be an all-timer of an odd year at the movies. That much is certain.
Not to give the whole thing away here, as it's worth the experience for those who are game for something wildly offbeat, but we're talking about a movie with no human characters, lots of graphically gross moments, explicit Sasquatch sex, zero dialogue, and no subtitles to relay what is being communicated.

A24 is really getting big. And we now mean that literally.
The indie studio is partnering with IMAX to re-release some of its most beloved films on IMAX screens, remastering movies from its library as part of a monthly screening series that will continue into 2025.
It kicks off with Alex Garland’s “Ex Machina” on March 27, followed by Ari Aster’s ‘Hereditary” on April 24, and the Safdie Brothers’ “Uncut Gems” on May 22. The screening of “Ex Machina” will precede a special sneak peek of Garland’s next movie with A24, “Civil War,” which also opens on IMAX screens on April 12.
Other titles haven’t been announced yet, but the studio will dig through its library of more than 140 feature films for future screenings. Can we humbly request “The Green Knight,” “Moonlight,” and “Under the Skin”?

A24 and Imax have teamed up to bring past A24 titles to large format fans in a new monthly screening series kicking off March 27. The Imax debut of Alex Garland’s 2014 sci-fi classic Ex Machina is first up with the presentation including an “exclusive sneak peek” at Garland’s upcoming Civil War.
Civil War, also from A24, premieres at SXSW tomorrow and debuts in theaters, including Imax, April 12.
The initiative, which looks to serve both partners well, calls for Imax to digitally remaster films from A24’s library of 140+ features for the screening series, which will run once a month for the next year. Ari Aster’s Hereditary (2018) is next up on April 24 followed by the Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems (2019) on May 22.

Sunday saw the 96th Annual Oscars ceremony broadcast live across the world, and for UK audiences it saw the show broadcast on ITV. There is lots to be said about this year’s Oscars, from winners and losers, to poor broadcasting panels – it is safe to say the award season gave us everything we’re used to.
For the UK the show has found a new home. Previously playing exclusively on Sky, this year it was broadcast by ITV. When the news of this broke it was a welcome change to many viewers across the UK, as for years the exclusivity of Sky has left the award show inaccessible for many film fans. Now, the new home for the awards show has some things it needs to get right, ultimately to provide insight and entertainment, throughout the breaks in between the Oscars broadcast. Writer and director Ari Aster has begun production on his newest film, “Eddington,” and he has assembled quite a cast.
Now boasting two Oscars, Emma Stone will appear in the film, as will Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, marking his second collaboration with Aster after last year’s love-it-or-hate-it-but-definitely-respect-it “Beau is Afraid.” Oscar-nominee and current Harkonnen meme king Austin Butler, Marvel’s future Reed Richards Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Tony winner Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr. round out the incredibly stacked cast.
A24, which has released all of Aster’s features (“Hereditary” and “Midsommar” before “Beau”) announced the “contemporary western” that is “coming soon” via Instagram. Aster has parted ways with his usual cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski and is working with the legendary Persian-French lenser Darius Khondji, whose credits include “Uncut Gems,” “The Lost City of Z,” “Midnight in Paris,” “Stealing Beauty,” “Seven,” and “ The City of Lost Children.

As cameras roll on Hereditary director Ari Aster’s latest production, the full cast is announced. As ensembles go, the one for Eddington is something to behold.
Production on Ari Aster’s latest film is a go. Cameras have begun rolling on Eddington, the next project from the talented filmmaker who has bought us Hereditary, Midsommar and Beau Is Afraid. The film is being described as a ‘Western-noir dark ensemble comedy’ and as with all of his projects, is being backed by trendy production company A24.
We’re not sure quite what to make of that description, but there’s no doubt that Aster has the ‘ensemble’ part of that description covered. Along with announcing the commencement of production on social media, Aster also revealed the cast that he has assembled for the film and it boasts some serious acting talent.

All artists have phases within their careers, and while it's easy to demarcate what those phases are in hindsight, it can also be possible to see them emerging and mutating in real time. Emma Stone, an actress who began her journey as a comedy darling in films like "Superbad," "The House Bunny," and "Zombieland," soon found herself climbing to the A-list, nominated for an Academy Award for "Birdman" and winning Best Actress for "La La Land."
This past weekend, Stone won the Oscar for Best Actress for the second time, for her performance as Bella Baxter in "Poor Things." It's a win that seemingly signals a change in her career from a quirky ingenue to a complex and daring leading lady, especially when coupled with her other recent turn as Whitney Siegel in "The Curse."
Continuing that emerging trend, The Hollywood Reporter just announced that she'll be joining the cast...

Ari Aster has put together a veritable all-star cast for his next A24 film, Eddington, featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, and Austin Butler.

Eddington begins production this week, with Aster writing and directing. He’ll also produce with Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. The film marks Aster’s fourth with A24 after Midsommar, Hereditary, and last year’s Beau Is Afraid.

With her second Oscar on the mantelpiece following Sunday's win for Poor Things, it would seem Emma Stone is looking to keep working with unique filmmakers. She already has Kinds Of Kindness, her third collaboration with Things' Yorgos Lanthimos on the way, and she's part of the cast for Ari Aster's new film, Eddington, alongside a notable ensemble that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler and Empire Of Light's Michael Ward.
Phoenix, of course, starred in Aster's most recent release, the chaotic and divisive Beau Is Afraid. As for the new film? Little has been released about it, save that it'll reportedly be a Western following a small-town New Mexico sheriff with lofty aspirations. Given that this is Aster – the man also behind Hereditary and Midsommar — we'd expect that basic synopsis to conceal some lurking terror.

Ari Aster’s fourth feature as a director is officially a go at A24. Aster is set to direct “Eddington” with A24 both financing and producing.
The film will reunite Aster with his “Beau Is Afraid” star Joaquin Phoenix alongside a cast that also includes Pedro Pascal, newly minted Oscar winner Emma Stone, “Yellowstone” star Luke Grimes, as well as Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr.
Production kicks off on “Eddington” this week.

Once a taboo broken only by the boldest of directors, violence against children has become increasingly common in horror films. Credit (or blame) for this phenomenon — at least in its more recent incarnations — goes to “Hereditary,” a movie that boldly broke the once-sacred familial contract. There’s bound to be diminishing returns when other filmmakers start taking inspiration from such transgressions, however. Six years later, that brings us to “Family,” premiering at the 2024 edition of SXSW.
Directed by first-timer Benjamin Finkel, the film treads similar thematic territory to Aster’s film, but inverted, with a sci-fi/horror twist. “Family” begins with a quick, disturbing cold open, as 11-year-old Johanna (Cameron Dawson Gray) desperately bangs on the window of a building we later learn is the temple where her grandfather (Allan Corduner) serves as a rabbi. Then her mother (Ruth Wilson) comes up behind her, grabs her by her ankle, and...

Kristen Stewart stars as mousy gym worker Lou who falls hard and fast for sculpted bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O'Brian) after she stops off in her small town on the way to a competition in Vegas. The pair fall hard and fast for each other but Jackie’s increasing addiction to steroids coupled with Lou’s criminal family - headed by Ed Harris’ Lou Sr - create a powder keg that’s ready to blow. The film is set in the late-80s, a period reinforced by careful costuming from Olga Mill - who previously brought her skills to William Oldroyd’s Sixties-set Eileen. Mma has been steadily catching up to boxing in terms of combat sport films. While there are plenty of action films that utilize the practice, boxing has been able to capitalize on more character dramas, especially since Rocky hit the scene (no pun intended). While there have been movies like Warrior and Bruised that have showcased mixed martial arts in dramatic films, the popular UFC brand has been geared more towards popcorn movies like Here Comes the Boom and the upcoming Road House remake. The producers of Hereditary are now set to make a UFC-based drama where two Mma fighters, who fight for their own reasons, find themselves on a collision course.
Variety reports that Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz will star in Strawweight as UFC fighters. The synopsis is said to “follow the journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One...

Oscar-winner and 2024 Berlinale jury president Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz are set to enter the ring for the UFC-based mixed martial arts drama “Strawweight.”
The film — being launched at the European Film Market by WME Independent and CAA Media Finance — follows the journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One is a young woman (Moretz) whose life is changed forever when she discovers her passion for the UFC, while the other is a former champion (Nyong’o) who is determined to reclaim her title by reinventing herself. Both want the same thing — respect — but only one can come out on top.
“Strawweight” will mark the feature directorial debut of James M. Johnston. A longtime collaborator of David Lowery, Johnston produced and directed second unit for “The Green Knight,” “The Old Man and the Gun” “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” and the upcoming “Mother Mary...

The trailer for “A Quiet Place: Day One” has been released, marking the latest installment in the post-apocalyptic horror franchise spawned from 2018’s “A Quiet Place.”
As the title suggests, the film will explore the beginning of the invasion in which deadly alien creatures with hyper-sonic hearing arrive on Earth.
The original film and its direct follow-up were helmed by “The Office” and “Jack Ryan” alum John Krasinski, but Michael Sarnoski directs the upcoming third installment. The first two films focused on the survival of the Abbott family, consisting of Krasinski and his real-life wife Emily Blunt as Lee and Evelyn, who do everything they can to protect their children, Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and Marcus (Noah Jupe).
“A Quiet Place Part II’s” cold open showed Lee and the rest of the Abbott family navigating the chaos of the first day of the invasion in their quaint suburban town. The prequel “Day One,...
