Taylor Swift and Prince are two of the biggest pop stars in American history, but their musical styles could not be more different. Despite this, Swift compared one of the hit songs she wrote to Prince’s “Manic Monday.” Notably, Swift gave the song away to another pop icon.
Taylor Swift’s ‘This Is What You Came For’ was inspired by Prince’s ‘Manic Monday’
Every great pop star has written at least one hit song for another artist. For example, George Harrison co-wrote Ringo Starr’s “Photograph,” Kesha co-wrote Britney Spears’ “Till the World Ends,” and Charli Xcx co-wrote Selena Gomez’s “Same Old Love.” Swift checked that off of her pop star bucket list when she wrote Rihanna’s “This Is What You Came For” with Calvin Harris. At first, Swift was credited under the name Nils Sjöberg. At this point, her role in writing the song has been widely reported.

It’s hard to imagine we’ll get a better soundtrack this year than that for Jane Schoenbruen’s I Saw the TV Glow. Bringing together yeule, Frances Quinlan, Florist, King Woman, Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, The Weather Station, L’Rain, Drab Majesty, Sloppy Jane, and more, with Twin Peaks Roadhouse-esque musical performances in the movie, A24 has now announced a May 10 release for the soundtrack, a week after the film’s limited release and a week prior to its wide release. Timed with the announcement, they’ve now unveiled yeule’s cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl,” a key motif throughout the film.
I said in my review, “Utterly hypnotic in rhythm from its very first scenes, we hear a haunting motif that will return: Yeule’s cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” as...

A newly released rough mix of “Photograph” from Def Leppard’s archives shows a different side to the Number One rock chart hit. Where the version that came out on Pyromania and dominated rock radio in 1983 finds the band singing “Photograph” and Joe Elliott responding, “I don’t want your … / I don’t need your …” the rough mix has less vocals and more space. It sounds almost like a new wave song with more prominent (and funkier) bass, less reverb, and a lot more jangly guitar in the chorus. The cowbell remains the same.

Def Leppard have announced a 40th anniversary expanded reissue of their seminal 1983 album Pyromania, arriving April 26th.
The legendary UK band is pulling all the stops for the reissue campaign, digging into the archives for previously unreleased demos, outtakes, rough mixes, and live recordings.
The 4-cd/Blu-Ray and 2-lp editions will include the original remastered album as well as these archival recordings, including a rare rough mix of “Photograph” with an unfinished vocal track and a previously “long lost” demo of “No You Can’t Do That” — an outtake and the “11th track” from the Pyromania sessions.
“Rediscovering dusty old cassettes which were brilliantly restored by [executive producer] Ronan [McHugh] and finding the long lost unfinished ’11th track’ was a journey only few of us are lucky enough to take,” remarked singer Joe Elliot in a press release. “What a trip!”

Melanie, the witty, gentle-voiced singer-songwriter who rose to fame with her crowd-pleasing performance at Woodstock in 1969 and had two major hit singles – “Brand New Key” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” – in its aftermath, died January 23. She was 76.
Her death was announced by her children Leilah, Jeordie and Beau Jarred. A cause of death was not disclosed.
“Dear Ones,” they wrote on Facebook, using the greeting favored by their mother, “This is the hardest post for us to write, and there are so many things we want to say, first, and there’s no easy way except to say it… Mom passed, peacefully, out of this world and into the next on January 23rd, 2024.”

Dave Grohl of Nirvana and the Foo Fighters once interviewed fellow drummer Ringo Starr. Grohl gave Ringo his explanation of what a good drummer does. He also revealed what he thought of the “It Don’t Come Easy” singer as a musician. Here’s a look at Ringo’s skills and how he compared to the other Beatles.
Dave Grohl says you can tell that Ringo Starr was a self-taught drummer
During a 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Grohl discussed drumming with the “Photograph” singer. “So I think that the sign of a great drummer is knowing who that drummer is within eight bars of the song,” he said. “I think that’s the goal.”
Grohl ruminated on why Ringo’s drumming is so distinctive. “I think a lot of it has to do with being self-taught, because you were just doing what came naturally to you, so you weren’t...

Megaplatinum rock stalwarts Def Leppard and Journey are gearing up to hit the road for a North American summer stadium tour starting July 6 in St. Louis. The 23-show jaunt runs through September 8 in Denver and will feature fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller and his band on the bulk of the dates, with Cheap Trick or Heart on the others.
The trek will hit Citi Field in metro New York on August 7 and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on August 25, both featuring Miller. See the full itinerary below.
The two headliners have toured together over the decades, but this is their first co-starring stadium affair. Def Leppard hit the huge U.S. and Canadian venues in 2022 for a Covid-delayed tour with Mötley Crüe in 2022.
San Francisco-based Journey has moved more than 49 million albums in the U.S. alone, paced by their 15 million-selling 1988 Greatest Hits.

The Beatles‘ “Don’t Pass Me By” is one of only two Fab Four songs Ringo Starr is credited with writing himself. The second one is a lot more famous. Regardless, “Don’t Pass Me By” set Ringo on a country-fried path.
The connection between The Beatles’ ‘Don’t Pass Me By’ and ‘Octopus’s Garden’
Only two Beatles songs have Ringo as their sole credited writer: “Don’t Pass Me By” from The White Album and “Octopus’s Garden” from Abbey Road. During a 2008 interview with Goldmine, Ringo discussed the former. “Well, ‘Don’t Pass Me By’ was the first song I’d written that we recorded,” he said. “I’d written other songs, but they were always other people’s song; I just rewrote the words. I used to say that I was rewriting Jerry Lee Lewis B-sides.

Ringo Starr wrote songs for The Beatles that were not-starters. Ringo compared his rejected songs to Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me” for a very specific reason. The “You’re Sixteen” singer also discussed his evolution as a songwriter — and why he prefers to work with co-writers.
Ringo Starr wrote songs for The Beatles that felt familiar a la Sam Smith’s ‘Stay with Me’
With some notable exceptions like “Octopus’s Garden” and “Don’t Pass Me By,” very few of The Beatles’ songs were written or co-written by Ringo. During a 2015 interview with Goldmine, Ringo discussed why some of the tunes he wrote for the Fab Four garnered ridicule. “Well, you know it was very difficult at the beginning for me as a writer because we did have Lennon and McCartney,” he said.

Ringo Starr‘s “Back Off Boogaloo” is so good that one listen should be enough to give any of the former Beatle’s detractors pause. During an interview, Ringo revealed that the song was a happy accident that came about when he was working with George Harrison. The “It Don’t Come Easy” singer explained how “Back Off Boogaloo” fits into his discography as a songwriter.
Ringo Starr’s ‘Back Off Boogaloo’ was the result of Ringo botching a drum pattern
During a 2015 interview with Goldmine, Ringo discussed the origin of “Back Off Boogaloo.” “‘Back Off Boogaloo’ is an incredible example of how accidents are sometimes fabulous when coming up with a song,” he said.
“You see, George wanted me to play that pattern on the bass drum but the problem is I’m not that efficient as a drummer,” he added. “I can’t go [imitates a beat] and play regular. So...

One of the many fascinating classic rock facts that fell out of the public consciousness is that Ringo Starr’s “Snookeroo” was written by Elton John and his legendary songwriting partner. Ringo revealed what he thought of “Snookeroo” and the prospect of John covering the tune. John recalled what he was thinking when he penned the track. Meanwhile, his songwriting partner said “Snookeroo” reminded him of one of The Beatles’ most famous hits.
Ringo Starr liked ‘Snookeroo’ and wished that Elton John recorded the track
During a 2015 interview with Goldmine, Ringo was asked about “Snooker.” “Yeah, that’s a good one,” he recalled. “That was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.” Together, John and Taupin wrote classic tracks such as “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues,” “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” and “Candle in the Wind.”

According to John Lennon, Ringo Starr had a reputation for being “dumb.” John discussed his thoughts on the “You’re Sixteen” singer‘s solo career. John also hypothesized what might have happened to Ringo had he never joined The Beatles.
Ringo Starr’s success made John Lennon ‘happy’
The book Lennon on Lennon: Conversations with John Lennon features an interview from 1975. In it, John discussed Ringo’s solo career. “I’m most happy — I guess we all are, in a way — for Ringo’s success, because of the other three of us … It always went around that Ringo was dumb, but he ain’t dumb,” John said.
“But he didn’t have much of a writing ability and he wasn’t known for writing his own material, and there was a bit of a worry that … you know, although he can make movies and he does make movies and he’s good at it,...

John Lennon didn’t think he was the most thoughtful musical producer in the world, but he called out Ringo Starr’s producer for being “too painstaking.” That’s quite the take, considering the producer in question gave us some of Ringo’s best albums. He was also behind popular tunes from Carly Simon and Harry Nilsson.
John Lennon slammed Ringo Starr’s producer, Richard Perry
During a 1975 interview with Rolling Stone, John said rumors that he took a long time to complete The Beatles’ songs were false. “I don’t want to make myself so painstaking that it’s boring,” he said. “But I should (pause) maybe t’ink a little more. Maybe.
“But on the other hand I think my criticism of somebody like Richard Perry would be that he’s great but he’s too painstaking,” he said. “It gets too slick and somewhere in between that...

Teyonah Parris’ decision to wear her natural hair is part of her “very intentional” goal to ensure Black women feel seen on-screen — and in all spaces — just as they are.
Parris, an NAACP Image award winner, has shown up and shown out in every role she’s been cast in, from “Candyman” (2021) to “WandaVision” (2021) to the “Photograph” (2020) and more. And in every role — including those mentioned — and at least for the last decade, she’s made it a point to wear her natural hair along the way.
In Juel Taylor’s “They Cloned Tyrone,” Parris continued her mission.

One of Ringo Starr’s albums embraces funk and disco music. The album was not a huge hit at the time. The record makes more sense in light of a late 1970s trend in classic rock.
Ringo Starr’s albums took a turn for the worse in the mid-1970s. Notably, Ringo wasn’t fond of a disco album he produced in 1977. Despite this, Ringo rerecorded the most famous song from the record in a different genre.
Ringo Starr’s albums got worse after ‘Goodnight Vienna,’ according to Ringo
Ringo had a few hit albums in the 1970s. He peaked with the 1973 album Ringo, which features the No. 1 singles “Photograph” and “You’re Sixteen.” His following record, Goodnight Vienna, was a hit as well, producing the hits “Only You (And You Alone)” and “No No Song.” Then, he made the forgotten album Ringo’s Rotogravure and the disco/funk album Ringo the 4th.

George Harrison made his way into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame despite not having much support from his Beatles bandmates or producer George Martin. The so-called quiet Beatle made it as a member of the Fab Four and a solo artist. George’s friend Jeff Lynne made it to the Rock Hall with his group Electric Light Orchestra, but he beat Harrison into another musical hall of fame.
Jeff Lynne beat George Harrison into the Songwriters Hall of Fame with his 2023 induction
George, of course, gained fame with The Beatles in the 1960s. Even though his songs didn’t appear on Fab Four records as frequently as Paul McCartney and John Lennon tunes, his were some of the band’s best. See, for example, “Taxman,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Something.”

A classic rock song from the 1990s sounds a lot like Ringo Starr’s “Back Off Boogaloo.” The two tracks have melodically identical choruses. Despite this, a member of the 1990s band didn’t connect the track to “Back Off Boogaloo” at all.
The chorus of Warrant’s ‘Cherry Pie’ sounds a lot like Ringo Starr’s ‘Back Off Boogaloo’
Part of the reason why “Back Off Boogaloo” is one of Ringo’s most famous singles is its infectious, stomping chorus. You don’t need to understand the song or hear it more than once to get that melody stuck in your head for hours.
Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” essentially borrows that melody. The main difference is that Ringo’s song is supposed to be angry while Warrant’s is supposed to be risque. It’s easy to understand why Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” was such as success in the early 1990s.

The Beatles’ members have shared many of their fantastic stories from the band’s epic run in the 1960s. There are countless books, memoirs, and documentaries like Anthology where fans can hear juicy details about their favorite songs, albums, and performances. While fans would love to hear more about The Beatles, don’t expect it to come from drummer Ringo Starr, who has no plans to write a memoir about the band.

In 1971, George Harrison put on the Concert for Bangladesh, and Ringo Starr was the only former Beatle to perform. Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney worried about the optics of performing with former bandmates and declined to join the event. Starr admitted that Harrison also had these concerns; because of this, he said Harrison didn’t expressly invite him. Regardless, Starr showed up to perform.
Ringo Starr and George Harrison | Cummings Archives/Redferns The Concert for Bangladesh was one of the first concerts of its kind
In 1971, Harrison and Ravi Shankar hosted two benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden to fund relief efforts for refugees from the Bangladesh Liberation War. He welcomed a number of musicians, including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, and Billy Preston.
"Overnight, everybody knew the name of Bangladesh all over the world. Because it came out in all the newspapers everywhere. So it had a tremendous value to it.

Ringo Starr’s “Photograph” has some lyrical similarities to The Beatles’ “Yesterday.” The lyrics of “Photograph” could be interpreted as a lament over The Beatles’ breakup. “Photograph” hit No. 1 in the United States, becoming the only No. 1 song written by Ringo. Ringo Starr | Michael Putland / Contributor
Ringo Starr‘s “Photograph” feels like it might be about The Beatles. After all, its lyrics are reminiscent of the former Beatles’ then-current situation. Notably, “Photograph” blew all Ringo’s other songs out of the water commercially.
Why Ringo Starr’s ‘Photograph’ is a bit like The Beatles’ ‘Yesterday’
On the surface, “Photograph” is similar to The Beatles’ “Yesterday.” It’s another sting-laden soft rock song about a lost love. However, the two songs were born out of different contexts. “Yesterday” came out in 1965, a time when The Beatles were still going strong and they might have gone strong forever.

Outside of Lennon-McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr formed their own songwriting partnership in The Beatles. They continued working together for decades after the band’s split. They trusted each other as musicians and knew exactly what they’d get when they asked each other to appear in songs. Here are 10 of the best collaborations between George and Ringo, in and out of the recording studio.

Ringo wrote “Octopus’s Garden” after sailing one day in 1968. He ordered fish and chips, and they accidentally gave him squid. Ringo’s feelings about the tensions between The Beatles are expressed in the lyrics like, “I’d like to be under the sea.” He wanted to be anywhere else but in the recording studio with them. However, he did let George help him throughout the songwriting process.

There are a couple of great songs from The Beatles‘ solo careers with appearances by other Beatles. The Fab Four might’ve gone their separate ways in 1970, but that didn’t mean they were through working together in some way. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr just never appeared on anything together. Here are the top five Beatles solo songs that have appearances by other Beatles.

The way The Beatles broke up seemed to make a reunion impossible. John Lennon once said he and Paul McCartney were so good they could have been The Beatles without George Harrison and Ringo Starr. That seems doubtful even though Paul and John wrote most of the songs. Still, John and Paul’s tattered relationship as the Fab Four fractured made regrouping next to impossible. Paul signed a contract that proved he believed a Beatles reunion might happen, but the closest they ever came to getting back together was a Ringo solo album.

Searchlight Pictures is in final talks with Kelvin Harrison Jr. to come on board for the title role in Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Searchlight landed the original feature pitch from Stefani Robinson last summer with Watchmen director, Stephen Williams, on board to direct.

After his two attempts at the international glory with English-language movies “The Sense of an Ending” (2014) and “Our Souls at Night” (2017), Ritesh Batra is back to the territory he is most familiar with, the heart-warming Indian romance he created with his feature debut “The Lunchbox” (2013) which became a huge festival hit. His newest film, “Photograph” (2019) walks pretty much the same ground, content-, execution-, and festival distribution-wise. After its world premiere at Sundance last year and European premiere at Berlinale, it went on an extended, seemingly never-ending festival tour, parallel with the wide cinema release. Better late than never, could be said for its screening at this year’s online edition of Zagreb Film Festival and the review here.
