Dakota Shapiro and Oliver Cooper in ‘Valley of the Boom.’
After making his Us TV debut in the National Geographic docudrama Valley of the Boom Dakota Shapiro was thrilled when he landed a role in the pilot of The Lost Boys, adapted from Joel Schumacher’s 1987 horror comedy movie.
The Australian-born, La-based actor had a terrific time shooting the pilot for The CW network, produced by Rob Thomas and directed by Catherine Hardwicke.
He played David, the sexy, dangerous and immortal vampire portrayed in the original film by Kiefer Sutherland.
The CW chiefs weren’t happy with the pilot scripted by Heather Mitchell and ordered a total reshoot, which retained just two members of the original cast: Shapiro and Medalion Rahimi, who played the carefree Californian Stella, David’s love interest.
However that hasn’t happened and the network’s hold on Dakota has expired so he is now busily auditioning.

Focus Features surprised the industry when it announced in late August that Todd Haynes’ true-crime drama “Dark Waters” was getting a prime theatrical release right in the middle of awards season. The movie, which stars Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway, began filming in mid January of this year and will be turned around fast for a November debut. While many expected the movie to be a part of Focus’ 2020 slate, the studio is in need of a dominant Oscar contender this year and Haynes is a reliable auteur.
“Dark Waters” stars Ruffalo as a tenacious attorney who uncovers a dark secret that connects a growing number of unexplained deaths to one the world’s largest chemical corporations. In the process, he risks everything — his future, his family, and his own life — to expose the truth. The day might be near when it will be news if an upcoming TV series doesn’t have a podcast to go along with it. For now, add Nat Geo’s “The Hot Zone” to the growing list of series enlisting some audio companionship. The story, which tells of Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax’s (Julianna Margulies) efforts to contain the Ebola virus after its first appearance on American soil, also will be addressed in “American Epidemics,” a Wondery audio series produced in conjunction with the TV show.
Lindsay Graham, the podcast host behind “American History Tellers” and the presidential-themed fiction series “Terms” and “1865,” will head up this new series, which will span three episodes. The second episode of “American Epidemics” will focus on the production of “The Hot Zone,” featuring interviews with Margulies and showrunners Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson.
“American Epidemics” premieres May 10, with new episodes debuting every Friday.

Joel Schumacher’s 1987 teen vampire horror The Lost Boys is an underrated gem. Sure, most of its awesomeness is down to a hugely charismatic young Kiefer Sutherland as the lead vampire, but that’s a casting that goes a seriously long way. It seems like someone at The CW’s as big a fan as I am, too, because they’re currently putting together the cast for a pilot that should herald a full-blooded Lost Boys TV show.
Already, we’ve heard of some exciting additions to the project and today, Deadline’s reporting that Flesh and Bone‘s Sarah Hay, Camping‘s Cheyanne Haynes and Bella and the Bulldogs’ Haley Tju are joining the roster, which so far includes former Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey and Kingdom alum Kiele Sanchez, with Medalion Rahimi (Still Star-Crossed) and Dakota Shapiro (Valley of the Boom) also having key roles. Facebook Watch is producing a new original animated comedy series called Human Discoveries, and they have cast Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick to star in it.
Human Discoveries will follow “a group of friends living at the dawn of human civilization. Of course, they’re the first to discover necessities like fire and the wheel. But, much more importantly, we’ll watch as they stumble onto humanity’s best, and worst, innovations. Art. Alcohol. Fashion. Racism. Small talk. And, much to their confusion, monogamy.”
The series is being developed by Chris Bruno and David Howard Lee with ShadowMachine founders Corey Campodonico and Alex Bulkley and Ninja’s Runnin’ Wild co-producing.
Efron and Kendrick will be joined by Lamorne Morris, Jillian Bell, Paul Scheer, and Lisa Kudrow (Friends).
My question is, does anyone even watch anything on Facebook Watch?

The CW, a network that currently has its hands full with its extensive superhero slate, is looking to branch farther out into bloodsucker territory, as a small screen reboot of The Lost Boys is on the way. Before you dab your brow in anticipation of a “why are they rebooting my favorite movie Ever?!” rant though, just wait, as plans for the show actually aren’t as dour as they might seem.
For one, we know that former Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey and Kingdom alum Kiele Sanchez will be headlining the project, while Medalion Rahimi (Still Star-Crossed) and Dakota Shapiro (Valley of the Boom) will also have major roles in the series. Not only that, but Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke will be getting behind the camera for the pilot and the script was penned by scribe Heather Mitchell, whose draft apparently got “everyone excited” and eager to pump new blood into the long-dormant franchise.

NBC nabbed the project in October with a put pilot commitment and Whitford executive producing and potentially starring.
Written by Webster, the untitled comedy is about a rural church choir that gets the director it never thought it needed when a salty, Ivy League music professor (Whitford) stumbles through their door.
Webster and Whitford executive produce alongside Winer and Jon Radler of Small Dog Picture Company.

This is news worth singing to the heavens about: NBC has ordered a pilot for a comedy about an unlikely church choir director starring Emmy winner Bradley Whitford, TVLine has learned.
The untitled single-cam comedy (formerly titled All Together Now) stars Whitford as a cranky Ivy League music professor who stumbles into becoming the director of a rural church choir. In addition to starring, Whitford will also serve as an executive producer on the project, should it go to series.
Lesley Wake Webster (Speechless, Life in Pieces) will pen the pilot script, with Modern Family veteran Jason Winer directing the pilot.

Welcome to “TV Take,” Variety’s television podcast. In this week’s episode, Variety’s senior features editor of TV, Danielle Turchiano, talks with Bradley Whitford, star of “Valley of the Boom,” National Geographic’s limited series about Silicon Valley during the dot-com era.
Whitford had no idea what to expect when he signed on to National Geographic’s “Valley of the Boom.” The series’ strange format, which includes documentary-style talking heads, fictional reenactments and several musical numbers, led to a “terrifying feeling,” the actor says — but the unconventional storyline is also the reason he decided to do the show.
“It seemed very pertinent to what’s going on today because it feels as if we’re beginning to understand that we have to assert our humanity on technology or it will take us over,” he explains. “But the way the story was told had the same joy, non-linear, kind...

Netflix has cast actor-dancer-model Ava Michelle to star in Tall Girl, its upcoming original high school comedy movie being directed by Nzingha Stewart. The newcomer leads a cast that includes Griffin Gluck (American Vandal), Luke Eisner (The Goldbergs) and Sabrina Carpenter (The Hate U Give) along with Steve Zahn and Angela Kinsey.
Shooting is underway in New Orleans after an open search was conducted last fall for a lead actress 5-foot-10 or taller and between the ages of 13-21. They eventually landed on Michelle, who is 6-foot-1, to make her feature film debut playing Jodi, the tallest girl in her school who has never quite felt comfortable in her own statuesque skin.
All of that changes when she falls for the handsome (and equally tall) foreign exchange student Stig (Eisner) who, of course, gets Jodi’s quirky, best, male friend Dunkleman (Gluck) and his hippie mom as a host family.

Having starred on Aaron Sorkin’s “The West Wing” for seven seasons, Bradley Whitford is certainly no stranger to political television. Now he’s in two more such series: Nat Geo’s exploration of the dot-com era, “Valley of the Boom” in which he plays real-life Netscape CEO James Barksdale, as well as Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” in which he plays Commander Lawrence, who helped build Gilead’s economy. He will also guest star in an episode of Pop TV’s meta limited series “Flack.”
What did it take to get you in the mindset to play complex men like Barksdale and Lawrence?
I am absolutely convinced the best acting feels not like school but like recess. And that’s kind of how I judge actors I’m [working] with because some are executing an assignment and some are having a blast. That’s where the really fun stuff happens.

National Geographic's '90s tech series Valley of The Boom tells the Silicon Valley story like no one else has.
Matthew Carnahan saw only one path when he pitched his vision for a series based on the real-life stories of the ‘90s tech bubble to National Geographic.
The House of Lies creator was never interested in telling a conventional story about clicking keys and endless lines of code. He cooked up something strange, a plan to make a show that was both fresh and innovative, worthy of being set during a period of profound technological advancement. So Carnahan walked into a pitch meeting and told the network that he sought to “ruin the genre.” He wanted the show to be as disruptive, an overused buzzword today, as the Og tech disruptors.
Nat Geo complied and let Carnahan piece together Valley of The Boom, a hybrid scripted-documentary...
