Earlier this year is was reported that Spike Lee was looking at directing a film adaptation of Marvel’s Nightwatch for Sony Pictures. But the director has confirmed that he has decided not to do it.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, the director was asked if he was directing the film, and he gave a very profound answer… “Nah.”
It would have been interesting to see Lee take on Nightwatch. He’s a solid director and the last movie he made, BlacKkKlansman, was such a great and fantastically made film!
Looks like Sony is back on the hunt for a director. The script for the film is being written by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. If you’re not familiar with Nightwatch, he is a lesser known Marvel character and has only made a small number of appearances in the comics. He had his own comic in...

It’s been over a year since Spike Lee was first mentioned as a possible director for the Spider-Man spin-off film “Nightwatch.” Then in March, it was reported that he signed on to take the directing duties for the superhero film, based on the script from “Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. But since then, we haven’t heard a peep about the film, even with the recent success of “Venom.” Well, Spike Lee seems to have given us the reason why we haven’t had any updates about his film — he’s not attached to it.

Following the release of "Venom", feature film adaptations in development, based on "Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters", will also include "Silk", "Black Cat" and a whole lot more, "...focused on being faithful to the comics...", said Sanford Panitch, President of Columbia Pictures:
Sony has licensing rights to over 900 Marvel Comics characters, including "Morbius", that will star Jared Leto...
..."Kraven the Hunter", based on the "Spider-Man" villain...
...plus more features in development, including "Jackpot"...
..."Silk"...
....and "Nightwatch".
"'Spider-Man' connects to a lot of the characters," said Panitch.
"There are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized and unique..."
The female "Black Cat", according to Panitch "...is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film..."
The character 'Felicia' (Felicity Jones), assistant to villain 'Harry Osborn',...

You’ve heard of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Universal’s dormant Dark Universe, but what about the SUMC? For the record, that’s the formal name given to Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, which is due to kick-off this fall thanks to Venom.
Per Variety, we know Sony has already drawn up plans for Silk, Nightwatch, Morbius, Jackpot and Kraven the Hunter. Silver & Black are headed to the big screen, too, but they’ve since been redirected to individual solo movies. Couple this with the fact that Sony Pictures currently owns film rights to “roughly 900 Marvel characters” big and small, and it’s pretty clear that the SUMC is bursting at the seams with cinematic potential.
That’s assuming things get off to a good start this October, mind you, when all eyes in the industry will turn towards Ruben Fleischer’s standalone Venom movie and its A-list cast.

Spike Lee is eyeing Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff “Nightwatch” as a directing vehicle, TheWrap has confirmed.
“Nightwatch” would be a part of Sony’s “Spider-Man” universe along with other Marvel Comics properties such as “Venom,” “Silver and Black,” and “Morbius the Living Vampire.”
Insiders caution that Spike Lee’s potential involvement is in the very early stages, but that he could potentially direct the superhero film written by “Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker.
