Tollywood Balayya’s 'Jai Simha' and Pawan Kalyan’s 'Agnyaathavaasi' were the two big budget flicks released for Sankranti. Digital NativeOne of the biggest box office battles in the Telugu film industry happens during the Sankranti. As like all the previous years, this year too, two biggies clashed at the box office. Let’s check out which one of it has emerged successful. Balakrishna’s Jai Simha and Pawan Kalyan’s Agnyaathavaasi hit the marquee for Sankranti amidst a lot of expectations and according to trade reports, Balayya has emerged victorious. While the Power Star’s Agnyaathavaasi saw a grand opening both in India and overseas, its collections in the subsequent days began to dwindle. The producers of the film have entered into a Non Recovery Agreement with the distributors and exhibitors, which means that the producers are safe and the distributors and exhibitors will have to incur the losses. According to trade reports, Dil Raju, who procured the Nizam area rights for Rs. 27 crores has been able to recover just about Rs. 10 crores and all other distributors and exhibitors have also incurred heavy losses. On the other hand, Jai Simha took a good opening and the producers are happy over its collections. What makes the producers happy is that they did not sell the distribution rights of the film in several areas and this worked out in their favour. Pawan Kalyan’s Agnyaathavaasi was directed by Trivikram Srinivas and the duo had teamed up for the third time after the massive success of Jalsa and Attarintiki Dared. The film has a bevy of stars in the cast including Keerthy Suresh and Anu Emmanuel as the female leads with Aadhi Pinisetty and Boman Irani in important roles. N Balakrishna and director Ks Ravi Kumar joined hands for the first time and they have managed to come out with a box office success. TollywoodKhushbu stated in an interview that for her to do a film in Tollywood after 10 years, it had to be a special one.Digital NativeKhushbu made a comeback to the Telugu film industry with the Pawan Kalyan starrer Agnyaathavaasi after a decade and is happy to have bagged the role. In an exclusive interview to Deccan Chronicle, the actor said, “After 10 years to do a film in Telugu it had to be a special one. Agnyaathavaasi is that special one. The entire setup was very appealing and eventually rewarding. Pawan and the crew treated me like a member of their family. Trivikram had offered me films earlier. But I was not very keen then as I did not like the roles. This time he came to me and said, ‘Ma’am, you cannot say no to this.’ And I didn’t say no. How could I? He made an offer I couldn’t resist.” The actor, who had forayed into politics, decided to stay away from doing movies 10 years ago. However, she has reconsidered her decision for meaty roles that she was offered and signed up for Agnyaathavaasi. Khushbu was one of the most wanted heroines during her heydays in the late 1980s and in the 1990s. She shared screen space with almost all the top stars in the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film industries, and tasted phenomenal success. She had a huge fan following; she is also the only heroine for whom a temple was built in Tamil Nadu. Agnyaathavaasi, which released on January 10, was directed by Trivikram Srinivas and starred Pawan Kalyan and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles. The film also featured Boman Irani, Adhi Pinisetty, Anu Emmanuel and Khushbu in pivotal roles. Agnyaathavaasi happens to be music composer Anirudh’s debut venture in Tollywood. V Manikandan cranked the camera and the film was bankrolled by S Radhakrishna under his banner Haarika & Haasini Creations. Even though the film has received mixed reviews, Agnyaathavaasi has beaten the records of Katamarayudu and Sardaar Gabbar Singh, which minted Rs 28.10 crore gross and Rs 26.90 crore gross respectively at the AP/T box office on their first day. The film released to packed houses last year for Sankranti and created a record by collecting over Rs 100 crore at the box office. Having made his comeback as a hero after a decade, Chiranjeevi proved that this ‘mega star’ status was intact. While there were expectations that Pawan Kalyan’s Agnyaathavaasi will break this record, looks like it will not be so. The film released amidst a lot of expectations but the mixed reviews aren’t working in its favour. Interestingly, Agnyaathavaasi’s pre-release business was around Rs. 125 crore, which created the expectations that it would fare well at the box office. The star cast is impressive with Bollywood actor Boman Irani playing an important role with Kushboo, Adhi Pinisetty, Anu Emmanuel, Tanikella Bharani, Parag Tyagi, Rao Ramesh, Sampath Raj, Murali Sharma, and Indraja also included to the star cast.
