Cailee Spaeny Talks ‘Civil War,’ Taylor Swift’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ Fandom and Manifesting ‘Matrix 5’
If Civil War star Cailee Spaeny isn’t already on every casting shortlist in town, then her 2024 is about to etch her name in stone.
Coming off of her Golden Globe-nominated performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, the Missouri native returns to the big screen with another critically acclaimed A24 film in Alex Garland’s Civil War. The duo previously collaborated together on Garland’s sci-fi miniseries Devs, and fulfilling a promise he made years ago to write his cast new roles, Spaeny is one of six Devs actors in the British filmmaker’s new action-thriller.
Spaeny plays aspiring war photographer, Jessie Cullen, and after being saved on the streets of New York City by her photojournalist hero, Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), she maneuvers her way into joining Lee’s road trip to Washington, D.C. Along with two other journalists, Joel (Wagner Moura) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson...

Casting for the third season of The White Lotus seems pretty locked in, but if Mike White needs any last-minute suggestions, then the new HBO farcical drama The Regime is a reminder of Kate Winslet’s impeccable comic timing and ability to ground even the most absurd dialogue. Seriously, book her into the luxe hotel — better still, as the next manager dealing with a coterie of awful guests. And if Mare of Easttown didn’t already exist, there would be a strong case for Winslet in the next rotation of True Detective pairings.

Robert Pattinson, one of the most talented English actors, embarked on his acting journey when he was 15. After playing supporting roles in the German made-for-television film Ring of the Nibelungs in 2004 and Mira Nair’s costume drama Vanity Fair, he landed the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005.
The role of Cedric Diggory helped Robert Pattinson earn recognition in the industry. Then came his portrayal of Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, based on Stephenie Meyer’s eponymous novel series. Although this role gained him worldwide recognition, the actor is not very fond of it. In 2022, he finally got the chance to portray the DC Comics superhero Batman and might be reprising his role sooner than fans had expected.

Mark Ruffalo is returning to HBO for a new limited series following his run on the Emmy-winning I Know This Much Is True. Teaming up with Mare of Easttown scribe Brad Ingelsby, the untitled project is based on an original idea following a task force of law enforcement officers and the criminals they are trying to apprehend. The working title is officially Untitled Brad Ingelsby Task Force Project. Along with writing the series, Ingelsby will executive produce the show side-by-side with director Jeremiah Zagar and lead star Ruffalo. This is Ingelsby’s first project since delivering the well-received Mare, which starred Kate Winslet as a detective determined to solve the mystery behind a teen girl’s death while coping with the grief surrounding a family tragedy. Brad Ingelsby (Credit: Joe Scarnici/Getty Images) Casting decisions were made ahead of the WGA strike, and no further development has occurred since the strike began.

During his tenure as ABC’s head of entertainment, Paul Lee helped shepherd hits for the network including “Black-ish,” “Scandal,” and “How to Get Away With Murder,” but he missed having a free hand in content creation. He has that now, he told TheWrap’s Office With a View.
At Wiip, the production company behind HBO murder mystery “Mare of Easttown,” “our special sauce is that we can break the rules,” Lee said. “We can bring in voices that are more distinctive and different from those within their own studios.”
Lee co-founded the independent studio in 2018 with Matteo Perale, the former head of strategy and corporate development at CAA. Besides the Emmy-winning “Mare,” Wiip has also produced Amazon Prime Video’s hit YA series adaptation “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and HBO’s upcoming comedy series “White House Plumbers” with Woody Harrelson.

Elizabeth Olsen (‘Love and Death’) rises in Emmy odds: Will she be avenged after ‘WandaVision’ loss?
Elizabeth Olsen has steadily been rising in our Emmy predictions for Best Movie/Limited Actress for her performance as accused murderer Candy Montgomery in HBO Max’s upcoming limited series “Love and Death.” In late March she took over fifth place and is continuing her upward trajectory. After being one of three actors to win an Emmy for “Mare of Easttown” in 2021, Evan Peters could now triumph for another limited series that can bag a trio of acting victories with Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”
“Mare” earned its three prizes for Kate Winslet in lead actress and Peters and Julianne Nicholson in their respective supporting acting categories. “Dahmer” — which is the first iteration of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan‘s “Monster” anthology series and stars Peters as the titular serial killer — can now win that same combination of awards: one lead category (for Peters) and both supporting races (for Niecy Nash-Betts and Richard Jenkins).
Of the three “Dahmer” actors, the one best positioned to prevail is probably Peters himself. The 36-year-old performer, who’s in first place in our limited series/TV movie actor odds, has been the presumed frontrunner ever since the...

Apple TV+ is staying in the Julianne Moore business, and the streamer is adding even more major talent to join her. After teaming with indie studio A24 to release the neo-noir, film "Sharper" earlier this year (featuring Moore in the lead role), Apple is looking to expand their modest slate of original films with another highly-anticipated project.
Variety reports that Apple has cast Moore and rapidly rising star Sydney Sweeney (seen below in "Euphoria") in a new feature film project titled "Echo Valley." On the other side of the camera, the story comes from "Mare of Easttown" writer, producer, and creator Brad Ingelsby, and like the HBO Max series, it's set in Pennsylvania. People showing up at your door without warning can put you in an imposition. Meanwhile, people arriving at your place soaked in blood in another story altogether. What’s your first question for this guest? Do you help them hide the body? Julianne Moore is about to find out because Apple Original Films is ready to cast the leads of Echo Valley, a thriller with a script from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby. The project stars Moore and Sydney Sweeney as a mother-daughter duo. Michael Pearce directs from Ingelsby’s script, with production from Scott Free Films and The Walsh Company.
In Echo Valley, Moore plays Kate Garrett, a woman recovering from a personal tragedy while boarding and training horses at Echo Valley Far, twenty-two remote, Bob Ross painting-worthy acres in Southeastern Pennsylvania. In the middle of the night, Kate’s recalcitrant daughter, Claire (Sweeney), is covered in blood at her doorstep beside herself.

Independent studio Wiip (Mare of Easttown, Dickinson) has acquired rights to the novel — which made several best books of 2022 lists — and will develop it as a TV series. Playwright and screenwriter Madhuri Shekar is set to adapt the story and will serve as an executive producer.

HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys gave updates on several shows and potential spinoffs/revivals/reboots to come from flagship shows such as Mare of Easttown, Succession, Watchmen, Six Feet Under, and True Blood. While confirming when House of the Dragon would return, Bloys hinted to Variety that despite the success of Mare, he intends to keep it a limited series, opting for creator Brad Ingelsby to continue his exclusive deal with the network with yet another crime-centric show for HBO. “I don’t think so,” Bloys said. “I always say ‘never say never.’ When we started talking about doing a Thrones prequel, that was something that HBO had historically never done. I had some people internally saying, ‘This is crazy. What are you doing?’ That said, I think that there’s something about the universe that George created that lent itself to [spin-offs]. How often do you find an adaptation of a novel that is better than the original work?
The answer is not very often.
But Silka Luisa has taken Lauren Beukes' Shining Girls, adding layers that propel an already taught story into unexpected depths.
Of course, I was also in the unique position to have watched four episodes of Apple TV's new series before I dove into the book.

Kate Winslet (virtually) presented the Life Achievement Award to Helen Mirren at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, but that’s not the only thing linking them. Winslet also won her second award for limited series/TV movie actress for “Mare of Easttown,” putting her in a tiny group of two-time winners that includes Mirren herself.
Winslet is now the fourth woman to win the category twice after after Mirren Alfre Woodard and Queen Latifah (“Life Support,” “Bessie”). Her first victory came 10 years ago for another HBO series, “Mildred Pierce.” No one has won more. The win also puts Winslet into an even more exclusive club with Latifah: They both now have a perfect 2-for-2 record in the category. (Woodard has had three nominations while Mirren owns a category-leading five.)

Here’s how to watch the 2022 SAG Awards online and on television.

After winning Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress at the 2021 Emmy Awards for her acclaimed turn as detective Mare Sheehan on the crime drama “Mare of Easttown,” Kate Winslet has now raked in a corresponding Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her work on the HBO series. Should the now 13-time nominee have a good night and reign victorious on at the SAG Awards on Sunday night, she’ll take home her fourth career award from the actors guild (and hopefully emulate this moment of exuberance from her Emmy acceptance speech).
In the limited series/TV movie actress category, Winslet finds herself in the company of four actors who are vying for their inaugural SAG Awards wins, including her onscreen “Mare” mom Jean Smart, as well as Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”). “Mare of Easttown” was a historic rarity for HBO during its acclaimed and buzzy run last spring. The Kate Winslet-led drama joined “The Undoing” as one of only two shows in HBO history to grow viewership totals week by week, and the “Mare of Easttown” finale also set a ratings record for HBO Max in terms of streaming viewership. But while fans were obsessed with “Mare of Easttown,” and spent weeks theorizing about how it might turn out, creator and writer Brad Ingelsby found himself a little bit surprised by the attention.
“I really had no idea that people would get so wrapped up in the mystery. I didn’t think the mystery was all that interesting or unique. I was really interested in Mare as a character,” Ingelsby, who is nominated at the Writers Guild Awards this year in the Original Longform category, tells Gold Derby during our “Meet the Experts” panel.

It’s February, the nominations for TV’s winter award season are in, and all that’s left is for the awards to be dispersed. But with ceremonies still a few weeks out, the news cycle has calmed down just enough for the industry to take a moment, take a breath, and take a look at this number crunching, all in the name of determining which series are truly top of the pops.
One of the most exciting facets of TV’s “offseason” awards is the fact that it’s a completely different game. While Emmy season is a single-minded marathon focused entirely on that big night in September, the past few months have seen dozens of organizations (and associated acronyms) announce nominations. It’s the latter part of that equation that makes it so difficult to track which shows are seeing more success than others and which are flying under the radar.

As the pandemic has acutely pointed out, America runs on the working class: grocery store clerks, sanitation workers, and delivery drivers who are doing the grunt work of keeping this country afloat as they fight for a reasonable minimum wage while barely being able to afford their own housing. Many of them are women; working-class sheroes who are stringing together paychecks and odd jobs to take care of themselves and, oftentimes, children and other relatives.
These are worlds that the glitz and glamour of Hollywood often ignore but that are taking prominent places in this award season’s crop of prestige television. SAG-nominated performances include those from programming such as Hulu’s “Dopesick,” the miniseries that gives faces to people impacted by the opioid crisis, and HBO’s “Mare of Easttown,” a story of an exhausted and beat-down small-town cop surrounded by her equally exhausted and beat-down friends and family,...

“Succession” finally found success at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, earning its first nominations ever — five, to be exact. But it was not the only hit show to break through after years of being overlooked: “Yellowstone” made the cut in the drama ensemble lineup. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss all the snubs and surprises on the TV side. (Click here for our film nominations analysis.)
Not unlike how “Succession” went from zero to nine acting Emmy nominations for Season 2, it went from zero to five SAG Awards bids for Season 3. Three of those came in the drama actor slate, which features Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong. It’s the first time that one show has fielded three nominees in the category in a single year and a sign of just how strong the HBO series is. With three nominees,...

A second season of HBO’s 2021 sleeper hit limited series “Mare of Easttown” has yet to be confirmed by the network, but star Kate Winslet already has an idea of where a possible follow-up run would take the show.
Winslet, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for playing a rough-around-the-edges Philly-area cop in Brad Ingelsby’s crime series, recently told The Guardian that a second season would reflect the current crisis surrounding police brutality and wrongdoing. (Via Insider.)
“I don’t know if I’m going to be playing Mare again,” Winslet said. “But if we were to do a second season, then for sure these atrocities which have existed in the police force here and in America will find their way into the stories we tell. One hundred percent. You can’t pretend these things haven’t happened.” (The journalist specifically pointed to the 2020 police murder of George Floyd in the U.

Critics Choice Association members can’t get enough of the dysfunctional Roy family. Two years after it won the Critics Choice Award for best drama series, HBO’s “Succession” is back, and its third season leads this year’s Critics Choice TV contenders with eight nominations.
The Critics Choice Awards nominations for TV were announced on Monday morning, and besides “Succession,” top nominees included another HBO program, “Mare of Easttown” — which is still competing in the limited series field since a potential second season has not yet been announced. And then perhaps there’s the biggest surprise of them all: A tremendous showing for Paramount Plus’ “Evil,” the drama from Robert and Michelle King that previously ran on CBS. Both “Mare” and “Evil” scored five nominations each.

After winning the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor Emmy for his turn as Detective Colin Zabel on HBO’s “Mare of Easttown,” Evan Peters is looking to pull off the highly specific thing Alexander Skarsgard did three years ago for “Big Little Lies”: follow his inaugural Emmy victory for an insanely popular HBO murder mystery that bagged three acting Emmys, in which he shares nearly all his scenes with the lead actress Emmy champ and in which his character dies, with his first solo Screen Actors Guild Award in the sole actor category with a supporting turn.
Even though “Mare” raked in one fewer Emmy acting nomination than “Big Little Lies” did in 2017, it earned its acting bids in the exact same three categories as its HBO companion: actress (“Mare”: Kate Winslet; “Lies”: Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon), supporting actress (“Mare”: Julianne Nicholson and...

The first thing you need to know about the new Paramount+ drama Mayor of Kingstown is that it is not a spinoff, reboot, or in any other way tied to Mare of Easttown, despite the two shows having sound-alike names. It’s the most confusing bit of series nomenclature since NCIS launched while CSI was still on the air, or perhaps going back to when ABC and CBS debuted dramas called Once and Again and Now And Again in the same season. Then again, maybe the echoing title is helpful.

One would be forgiven for confusing “Mayor of Kingstown” from Paramount+ with “Mare of Easttown” on HBO. Mayor or Mare, Kingstown or Easttown, Pennsylvania crime drama or Michigan crime drama. Among the profusion of “prestige” TV, the easiest way to keep them straight isn’t by their title or subject matter, but their star: Kate Winslet is the eponymous “Mare of Easttown,” while Jeremy Renner plays the unofficial “Mayor of Kingstown.”
The latter is also the latest original streaming series with the weight of an entire service on its shoulders. The Jeanaissance is alive and well. She may not like the term to describe her latest career peak, but there’s no denying that legendary actress Jean Smart is on a roll, having won her fourth Emmy Award on Sunday night.
Smart was named outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her critically acclaimed role as stand-up Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s “Hacks.” This is her first lead acting win following victories in the supporting comedy actress (for “Samantha Who?”) and guest comedy actress (for “Frasier”) categories. She was also nominated last year for supporting actress in a limited series or movie for another HBO show, “Watchmen.”
Smart received a standing ovation as she accepted the award, dedicating it to her late husband, Richard Gilliland.
