Trolls: The Weirdness Continues
brandyharringtonfan15 March 2023
Trolls: The Beat Goes On, a show I used to really like for the upbeat colors and awesome songs. I binged this entire show in around 3 days, and it's not as good as I remember.

The episodes: Most of the episodes range from being a 3-4/10. Most of the episodes have very generic plots, other times they're frustrating to get through because of either something like a character ruining it or some bad jokes. But, whenever this show does something unique with its' episodes, they end up being really good.

For example, my favorite episode is Bringing Up Birdy. This is what all episodes of this show should be like; it is very different from others. The plot is different (kinda meh though) and can be funny when it wants. The main reason why I like it is because of the heart. This episode takes itself seriously the entire time and doesn't change the tone with a bunch of wacky, unneeded gags. It's just telling a good story and is there to convey what it wants.

Most of my least favorites have one major issue: the characters. Cloud Guy is my least favorite, and he is the problem with a lot of the worst episodes from this show (Two's a Cloud, Cloudy With a Chance of Hugs, etc). He is really annoying and can ruin an episode by being in it for just a few seconds (ex: ending of Bye Bye Bunker). The rest of the characters can range from cute to eh. My favorites are Cooper, CJ, Smidge, and Branch.

It might just be my nostalgia talking, but this show's songs are really good. My favorite are Shine Your Light (credits song of seasons 5-8 played in Dark Side of the Lagoon) and Best Day Ever (played in Royal Review). I like upbeat music, he lyrics are cheesy, but the instrumentals are really nice.

It's good for younger kids, but I personally don't know if watching this show's follow up (TrollsTopia) is worth it.

LOVE IT!
angelmbo17 February 2019
This show is hilarious!!!! My 7 and 4 year old love it, and I do too. It's one of the few shows we can all watch and enjoy together - it has humor that appeals to both kids and adults. The writing and stories are much more thoughtful and creative than a typical 'kids' show (Paw Patrol, PJ Masks, etc.) Can't understand reviews that say it's just for kids to enjoy. Give it a chance!i

Just when I was starting to look at the animation side of Netflix with a little bit of hope...
sporeviews26 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Just when I was starting to develop a soft spot for animated spin-offs, Trolls found a way to rip ALL of that away from me. I don't review animated movies as much as television series, and there's a reason for that. I'm more invested in animation than live-action and unfortunately, when it comes to theatrical features, I don't feel very excited as of lately. There have been some pretty good animated movies released in the past decade, but the more you watch them, the more washed-up they feel.

Regardless of which studio has been the most responsible, we can all agree that a lot of animated movies feel formulated, in every single aspect. From the structure, to the art direction. And this very idea was the reason why I didn't even bother to watch Trolls when it first came out; In fact, I had no plans to watch it until recently, when I decided to review the Netflix series. And after watching it, I got EXACTLY what I expected to see; Same types of jokes and gag characters, same sound design, same visual style of emotional implication and perspective shots, needless addition of popular songs, and just to add something a little extra, I disagree with the show's main ideology of "Be happy all the time".

If I had to rate the movie, I would give it a generous 5/10, for the single fact that I acknowledge the effort that was put into making the animation look expensive, and admirable profession, and some of the characters arcs were perfectly competent. My overall impression, was that it was pretty uninteresting. And I would have NEVER want to revisit it, and I DEFINETLY do not see potential in a full series, but I guess I was wrong. Oh wait.. I was right, because just like it's source material, the show is SUPER BORING.

So the series takes place after the events of the movie which, I'll give them props for not driving me crazy with continuity errors; In fact I was impressed at how Branch feels appropriately developed, in which he's more open to the idea of happiness, but he also hasn't abandoned his more cynical side. Which makes sense, since it's now embedded in his personality after years of it defining who he is. But at the same time, this is kind of a flaw with the series. Honestly, Branch was the only character in the movie that I had ANY emotional investment in. He had the most interesting background even if the movie didn't DO much to make him come to grips with it, and move on in a natural way. And his cynicism perfectly contrasted Poppy's naïve optimism throughout the journey they had in the movie. I didn't care for Poppy in the movie, besides how her ideology was clashing with Branch, and I care even LESS for Poppy in this series.

Her main ongoing struggle is to become a better Queen, except this never really feels like an emotional challenge for her. She has no real expectations, it's not like her father pushes her to be the best Queen she can be, and what I don't think was ever established is that she lives in the shadow of her predecessor, so she doesn't really have much to prove in the end. This just feels like a painfully simplistic character struggle. And as for Branch, his character seems perfectly mature and adjusted, so there isn't really much at stake for him, and I don't really find any of them either fun or charming enough, that I would want to see more of them.

So at the end of the day, the only thing you'll end up really caring for, is the tension between the trolls and the bergens, in which Poppy is trying to create harmony between them. Besides the two main characters, there's NOT much emotional connection built that felt significant to me. King Grizzle and Bridget are fine I guess, even if at times it feels like the show wants me to have a stronger bond with them despite the fact that in the movie, they were just tools. But the rest of the troll characters are EVEN worse; in the movie they were just one-dimensional characters, and they don't seem to be any different here. So taking account all of these factors, and add the fact that the stories have, (and this is me being nice) acceptably fine premises with basic structures, you can probably imagine what was my experience. It was a complete drag.

I'm not very fond of the colour choices, some trolls have noses with weird colours that are sometimes TOO bright, and in relation with the colour of the hair, skin and clothes, the combination just doesn't feel aesthetically pleasing to me. I also really don't like the soundtrack; I hate criticizing shows and movies for adding electronic dance music, and in all fairness, there are moments when the addition of EDM is justified, like whenever there's a party happening. But then you have an intense scene that has a musical score with a dance craving beat, and I just think, "Was that REALLY necessary?" You know, I'd much rather listen to generic stock background music than this tone misplaced musical score. There are several songs that sound over processed, including the opening theme song. To be fair, the voice acting is actually good, even if they're not the same voice actors. And to wrap things up, the show is not funny. That's all I really have to add; Humor is subjective I guess. So, yes this show is PAINFUL. The songs are tone-deaf, the colours are mismatched, and the characters are one-note.

It's a kids show people
danleyjenn-7509023 December 2018
My daughter lives to watch it, in fact she's watching it right now. For me, it can actually be quite entertaining. I think they are doing a great job with it. Basically if your kids like the movie they will like this. And as an adult, I don't mind it myself.

Just awful, didn't hold my kids attention
facebook-1991228 December 2018
Watched with my 8yo son and my 4yo niece and 2yo nephew. It was dull and offensive on the ears. Paw patrol, pj masks, Ben & holly, ... all can hold the kids attention, this didn't and was painful to watch as an adult; couldn't tune it out.

Great for musical or high energy children!
If your kids liked the Trolls movie, or if they're into music and dance, this is the perfect show for them! My daughter and her cousins are totally in love with it. They're in the 2-6 year old age range, so it's important to me that nothing on the show is scary or offensive at all, and it helps that every episode has a new musical number for them to get into. The kids jump up to dance along all the time instead of just being couch potatoes, which is also nice.

I have everything Trolls. Hate this franchise. Bad characters, worse art design. Cast grab. Almost made me quit watching animation.

1 out of 10? Are you kidding.
jake_jarvis16 July 2019
Never write reviews but saw that someone gave this show a 1 out of 10 and tore it apart like it was a serious Oscar winning movie which is just abused. Just take it for what it is, a kids show and it is absolutely hilarious!! Pretty sure my wife and I enjoy it more than our little girl.

So much fun for my daughter (and myself to be honest)
erikwt-1274319 October 2019
Not gonna say much only that my 3yo loves it, especially the music in the beginning- she insists on dancing to it no matter what. Is a fun cartoon, that's it. Guess you can't please everyone, but theres absolutely nothing bad about this show; some jokes only adults will laugh at as well

Wondeful
justinedavenport14 February 2018
This show is hilarious, light, and fun. All kids shows these days are the same exact thing; bland child hero who saves the day and all the adults are incompetent. Trolls: The Beat Goes On is such a nice breath of fresh air. The humor is good enough for adults to appreciate as well, making it a painless show to have on. This show deserves a second season. I actually just made this IMDb account just so I could leave a review because I was shocked how underrated it was. This show isn't meant to be taken so serious as others have. It's clearly meant to just be fun short stories, and it does it very well. I can't explain how refreshing it is to have a children's show that's actually funny.

Youngsters will love it
thetail-3163421 January 2018
I can not review this as a Dad with an adult perspective. This series was not made for us. It is not like the family movie which it is based it is built for the very young who like bright colours and songs who love stories about friendship.

It is episodic, the animation is familiar but it isn't quality, the voices are not the original cast members but you can't really tell. The story isn't progressed from the movie either (similar to the animated short) and I don't think they ever will. The series focuses on the side characters as much as the main, like Cloud Guy, the horse looking one and the guy that farts sparkles.

If I have any real problem - is that my 3 and 6 year old can't binge more than 6 episodes in a row (right now) which means as a father I have already memorised all these episodes which my kids just repeat.

It's not for adults! Stop complaining!
zipporaha13 March 2018
I agree with the last reviewer. It's not a series for adults. But as a mom I can tell you that my little girl is absolutely obsessed with this. She even did her first tv show binge when season 2 came out!!! And I will admit I really enjoyed some of the songs.

It's a KIDS show, and my little lad loves it.
dj_ten47 September 2019
Wow, some of the reviews here... first and foremost, this is a KIDS show. Sure, nothing is loved universally by all kids, but I know my little lad (3yo) loves this. He saw the film and was immediately in love with Poppy, Branch, their friends and the music. The show doesn't have quite the same sheen, but he happily settled into it and we both have a giggle at some of the jokes (some are clearly references for mums and dads).

The person who wrote diatribe on here denouncing the state of animated movies and stating how this exemplifies the decline of the artform... Jesus... if you're an adult sitting at home stroking your chin over the finer creative choices in this show as if it was made with you in mind, then you need to get over yourself.

This show is amazing!!! It has a lots of amazing catchy songs and awesome plots. Cast may not be the same that doesn't matter at all everyone did great in their roles. Seasons mostly end with a cliffhanger but that just makes me more excited for the next season!!! I enjoy it so much and it always brings one big smile on my face! ADORABLE!!!!

Super cute
d-abracken19 April 2018
I love this show and I loved the movie. I work from home and my two and five year old watch this all day long! LOL, but I don't mind because it is super cute and the songs are catchy and adorable. I know I'm terrible I'm 35 and I love cartoons as much as my kids LOL...so sue me :-) The animation wasn't as good as How to Train Your Dragon series but I get it they aren't going to spend Justin Timberlake big budget on this. But dialogue is clever and funny, voice acting is well done, love the banter between Poppy and Branch. It is a satisfying follow-up into the lives of the trolls. Only thing I'm wondering is why they made Bridget and Gristle so much uglier, haha they were so cute in the movie.

playstationonward20 September 2021
This show is the definition of wholesome. It's laugh out loud funny, has great songs, is super cute and overall a fun watch. The characters are wonderful and they work well off each other. DreamWorks always seems to put out great stuff for TV shows and this is no exception. Such a cute show.
