John Carpenter's 1998 film "Vampires" -- based on the 1990 novel "Vampire$" by John Steakley -- is 30% vampire movie and 70% Western. It follows a cadre of ultra-masculine, cussing, toxic badass vampire hunters who wear black clothes and treat women like garbage. They are led by a snarling jerk named Jack Crow, played by James Woods, and you may insert your own joke about savvy casting here. This team of vampire hunters is sponsored by the Vatican and receives a hefty payout every time they infiltrate and exterminate a nest of bloodsuckers.
In this universe, vampires hide in desert shacks during the daylight hours, and sometimes merely bury themselves in sand. They are all ghoulish monsters immune to crosses, holy water, and garlic. The vampire hunters stalk into said shacks and fire wooden stakes into vampire chests with specialized harpooning equipment. The hunters also attached tethers to the vampires, then activated a winch outdoors,...

This Haunting Of Bly Manor review contains no spoilers.
Mike Flanagan has slowly become one of the surest hands in horror. Not only has he excelled which original material like Oculus and Hush, he’s also expertly adapted tricky properties like Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, the daunting sequel to The Shining. Perhaps Flanagan’s most widely seen work, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, was a 10-episode series that updated Shirley Jackson’s famous novel of the same name. Flanagan’s revisionist take was a hit with critics and horror aficionados alike, garnering praise from King and director Quentin Tarantino for being both spooky and emotionally rich, with a careful, compassionate focus on its characters and their inner lives.
For his follow-up, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Flanagan looked to an even more sacred, notoriously difficult classic for inspiration, Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw.

Jub Clerc. (Photo: Martine Perrett)
Writer-director Jub Clerc’s debut feature Sweet As is due to shoot on location in the Pilbara early next year, after receiving major production funding from Screen Australia’s Indigenous department.
Set in the Pilbara, the coming-of-age film follows 15-year-old Indigenous girl Murra, who finds herself abandoned after an argument with her mother.
When an unusual lifeline is thrown her way by her Uncle Ian, a local cop, in the form of a travelling Photo Safari, Murra finds herself careening down a dusty highway with a bus full of ‘at risk’ teens and two peculiar team leaders.
A Nyal Nyal/Yawaru woman, the dramedy is inspired by Clerc’s own experience growing up in the Pilbara and The Kimberley; she did a photo safari with National Geographic when she was growing up.
While the story is embellished for screen, the writer-director says the characters are...

The Haunting of Bly Manor, the spiritual successor season to the hit 2018 Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House, has finally started to stir, making proverbial noises in the night with the reveal of a fall release window. Moreover, Netflix has released the very first images from the anthology iteration.
After nearly a year since the last real update, which left viewers wondering if the show had become another pandemic-pushed production, Netflix revealed that The Haunting of Bly Manor will premiere on the streaming platform this fall on a date to be revealed. In keeping with its ghostly motif, the season will manifest as an adaptation of Henry James’s 1898 gothic horror novella, The Turn of the Screw, a tale set in a creepy English manor, focused on the ordeal of governess hired to care for two young children seemingly possessed by ghosts. Check out the official images just below.

2020 has not been an easy year on cinemagoers, in fact it has been the worst since some of the earlier days of the medium. Still, despite the disappointed sighs that have grown among audiences when hearing another much anticipated film has been delayed further, there has been some plucky films that have thrived at this time of panic. Many of these films have been ones which have solely enjoyed huge VOD success but Brett and Drew T. Pierce’s (known and credited collectively as The Pierce Brothers) horror film The Wretched, is a film which has indeed hit VOD but also cinemas, doing particularly well at select drive-ins Stateside, as it topped the box office six weekends running. The first since Avatar to do so (obviously with wildly different box office takings). And little wonder too, because The Wretched is a film perfect for a drive-in experience and a brilliant throwback horror flick.

Top Italian film outfit Rai Cinema on Wednesday sounded an upbeat post-pandemic note as it unveiled a slate of 20 upcoming titles to exhibitors and press, comprising new works by prominent Italian directors such as Nanni Moretti, Gianfranco Rosi, and Susanna Nicchiarelli alongside their U.S. acquisitions — most notably Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
“Italy will be the only country in the world where this film will not be distributed by a major company,” boasted Rai’s head of distribution Luigi Lo Nigro, referring to Scorsese’s murder mystery drama set to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. Apple is reportedly in the process of partnering on “Flower Moon” with Paramount. The Italy deal between Paramount Rai and Leone Film Group had been previously announced.

A handful of indoor theaters opened up to customers this weekend, mostly in Texas. But under these unusual pandemic conditions, the box-office numbers don’t shed much light on what will happen when more theaters reopen with brand new titles.
With stringent safety controls including social distancing, the indoor theaters are grossing far less than the drive-ins that have remained open. And curiously, in several multiplexes, Sony’s VOD title “Bloodshot,” the Vin Diesel actioner that originally opened March 13 (the weekend before theaters closed) sold more tickets than Universal’s much-trumpeted Pvod smash “Trolls World Tour.” This suggests that the male action demo might be more willing to brave theaters than parents and children. It’s tempting to over-analyze these results.
“Trolls” remains #1 on two key charts: Amazon, which ranks by numbers of rentals (without regard to the film’s $19.99 price), as well as FandangoNOW, which lists by money taken in.

Since launching in November, Apple TV+ has staked a claim in the great streaming wars, with series across multiple genres. With its topical subject matter and A-list stars, “The Morning Show” landed with Golden Globes voters, nabbing three nominations but failing to secure a win. M. Night Shyamalan’s “Servant” was a finely crafted experiment in serving a half-hour horror series, proving Apple had enough sense to give auteurs free reign. “Dickinson” was one of the best new queer shows of the year, already leading to a Season 2 for creator Alena Smith.
Now, Apple is enlisting another name director, “Crazy Rich Asians” helmer Jon M. Chu, to bring his vision to the growing platform. Chu is executive producer on “Home Before Dark,” a tense mystery created by showrunners Dana Fox and Dara Resnik (“Daredevil”). 3rd Update, Saturday Am: Horror films in the wake of New Line’s It Chapter Two ($91M opening) have been in a frightening free fall at the domestic box office and for various reasons.
They were either too long or based off of a non-mass appealing piece of source material (i.e. Warner Bros.’ truly sublime Doctor Sleep which went into a coma with $31.6M domestic final), so cheap that their distributors believed that there was no reason to spend any more money than what was necessary, or just flat out awful (the F-graded Grudge and The Turning plus the D+ Cinemascore pic Black Christmas). After seeing broad comedies get swallowed up whole by streaming and minimized at the box office, the last thing major studio executives need is for another crowd-appealing genre, in which moviegoers have a great shared experience,...

Following her performance at Bernie Sanders’ campaign rally in Houston Sunday, Soccer Mommy has released the third and final single from her album Color Theory, out this Friday via Loma Vista.
The track, “Bloodstream,” is the album opener, and a meditation on childhood loneliness and chasing down happiness. “Hydrangeas blooming of the branches of park trees/It’s a half-hearted calm — the way I’ve felt since I was 13,” Sophie Allison sings over a churning guitar that wouldn’t be out of place in a Nineties teen comedy. “‘Cause I may not feel it now,...

While the debut trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife hit the sweet spot between mystery and nostalgia, some fans have been somewhat concerned about the upcoming pic’s comedic elements, or lack thereof.
Essentially, fans have been wondering whether writer-director Jason Reitman – son of the original Ghostbusters movies’ helmer, Ivan Reitman – will nail the horror-comedy tone that was so noticeable in his father’s beloved ’80s classics. Clearly, the serious tone of the spooky two-and-a-half minute preview clip is eerie and intriguing, for sure, but the question still remains: Will Ghostbusters: Afterlife be laugh-out-loud funny like the iconic Og films?
Well, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, star Finn Wolfhard has gone on record to placate fans and has promised them that Ghostbusters: Afterlife is going to be a super funny movie. Here’s the rundown, courtesy of THR:

The first season of Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House was one of the most effective horror series in memory, and one that rewards multiple viewings. A second season is now in its way, with the focus switching to The Haunting of Bly Manor, an adaptation of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw. Flanagan has already described the new season as even more terrifying than the first, and now series actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen has revealed that the director has “surpassed” himself with the new episodes.
Speaking to Collider, Jackson-Cohen, who played Luke Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, had this to say about why fans should be excited for season 2:

So far, 2020 has not been a great year for horror films. “The Turning,” “Gretel & Hansel,” and “The Grudge” have all been massive disappointments, both creatively and financially. Well, Blumhouse is hoping that by the end of February, the genre’s luck in the year will change thanks to the upcoming film “The Invisible Man.”
And as seen in the new Super Bowl teaser for “The Invisible Man,” the film is using the iconic character in a completely new way.

Even though Super Bowl weekend is always a must-to-avoid for distributors–due to social activities in the days ahead of Sunday’s big game– this year fewer people went out to movies than just once before in box office history.
That said, this weekend marked a 10% weekend uptick against last year’s rock bottom. Next weekend, things will look up with Warner Bros.’ DC sequel “Birds of Prey,” starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. But among troubling box-office signs were weak starts for two new genre titles, “Gretel and Hansel” (United Artists) and “The Rhythm Section” (Paramount).
These movies did poorly even by the minimum standards set for second-tier entries. Their competition? The global Netflix debut of Sundance pop star documentary “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana.” Interestingly, the record for an opening against the Super Bowl came from “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” which grossed over $30 million.

Sony’s Bad Boys For Life continues to lead the international box office, taking the top spot for the 3rd weekend in a row. The offshore frame was $30.8M in 63 markets for an overseas cume of $142.7M and a worldwide total of $291M to date. Globally, it’s the biggest in the franchise and is holding well, down just 38% in the already opened offshore hubs.
The Top 5 are currently the UK ($14.8M), Germany ($12.7M), Mexico ($10.5M), Australia ($10M) and Russia ($9.1M). Italy is still to open.
As was the case last weekend, it’s likely a local Chinese movie might have been at the top of the chart, but given theaters across the vast nation have been shuttered due to the spreading coronavirus, screens remain dark. When that will change is still unclear, though we do know that a series of Hollywood titles slotted for upcoming release have now been put on hold indefinitely.
