Nicolas Cage gets a ride in this exclusive first-look image from upcoming survival action-thriller Arcadian (formerly titled Sand and Stones).
The Oscar winner — soon to be seen playing Dracula in Universal’s Renfield with Nicholas Hoult — stars alongside Jaeden Martell (It, Knives Out), Maxwell Jenkins (Dear Edward, Lost in Space) and Sadie Soverall (Fate: The Winx Saga, Saltburn) in the film, directed by Ben Brewer, who was the lead visual effects artist for Everything Everywhere All At Once (and reunites with Cage following the filmmaker’s feature debut The Trust).
Highland Film Group is handling worldwide rights to the feature, which recently wrapped production in Dublin, Ireland and is now in post-production.
Written by Michael Nilon (Braven starring Jason Momoa), Arcadian is set in a post-apocalyptic and sparsely populated world, where Paul (Cage) and his twin teenage sons, Joseph (Martell) and Thomas (Jenkins), have managed to claw out an existence yet live in constant fear.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Elizabeth Banks is defending a controversial scene in her upcoming dark comedy.
The actress-turned-director is behind “Cocaine Bear” which follows, as its title hints, a bear who accidentally consumes cocaine. The bear isn’t the only one in the movie who samples the drug, however, as a group of children also discover one of the packages.
“It was definitely controversial,” she told Variety. “There were conversations about, should we age up these characters? We all kind of held hands and we were like, ‘Guys, they’ve got to be 12.’ It’s their innocence being tested. That’s what was interesting to me about that scene.”

You’re not going to believe this, but Elizabeth Banks has never done cocaine.
“I took ‘Just say no’ to heart,” Banks says over breakfast in Beverly Hills. Growing up in western Massachusetts and moving to New York City to break into acting, the 48-year-old Banks had many opportunities to, you know, do some blow, but she claims she never took them. She says it was just too risky. “Being a goody-two-shoes played into it,” she says. “Personal safety played a big role in it. I was a cocktail waitress for years. And I was not interested in not being sober for the shit I saw.”
Banks has no such reservations, however, when it comes to filming a giant hairy mammal ingesting a boatload of coke. That is the wild premise of her latest film as a director, “Cocaine Bear.” The dark, R-rated action-comedy is loosely based on the true...

The ten best films of 2022, in five double features:
10. “Benediction” and 9. “Bros”
How does one become a fully integrated member of society — an artist, a lover, a participant in the marketplace of ideas — when that society constantly rejects your very presence and participation? Two of this year’s best took very different looks at gay creatives looking for love and fulfillment, about a century apart; “Benediction,” Terence Davies’ haunting biopic of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden) takes a much different path than the raucous rom-com starring and co-written by Billy Eichner, but both films followed men seeking their heart’s desire in a world that judges that desire. (The exceptional LGBTQ films “Fire Island” and “The Inspection” fit this category as well.)
8. “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” and 7. “Women Talking”

The holidays are here, Oscar voters. What are you going to watch?
At this point in the calendar, the answer could almost be “everything” – but maybe not everywhere, and definitely not all at once. The Academy Screening Room, the members-only portal where studios can place their films to be viewed by voters, has 178 films as of the beginning of Christmas week, including every major Best Picture contender except for a pair of three-hour epics only recently unveiled, Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” and James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
Those films, which beg to be seen on the largest and loudest screen possible, have yet to be added to the Academy Screening Room, a placement that costs 20,000 (albeit with a discount available to lower-budget productions). But while the Asr got off to a slow start this year, the other contenders are all now available for members to view, even...

“Bros” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment): The comedy that carried the weight of so many competing expectations that it’s a miracle it exists at all, “Bros” is the queer zeitgeist moment that gave away a few too many gay secrets to the straight audiences who saw it, but for better or worse, those secrets were delightfully funny. Co-writer Billy Eichner stars as a gay man indifferent to love but still open to possibilities when a traditional handsome jock (Luke Macfarlane) enters the picture. It turns out both of them have been traumatized by the homophobic world around them, but they figure it out in “When Harry Met Sally…” style by the end. That’s not a spoiler; all rom-coms end that way.

Retrograde (Matthew Heineman)
There’s a common view that one needs distance and perspective to truly process and reconcile current events before making a worthwhile film on any particular subject, be it narrative or nonfiction. Throughout his intrepid career, Matthew Heineman has refuted this notion, immersing himself in the Syrian conflict, on the front lines of the Mexican drug war, and NYC’s early days of Covid-19. In each instance he has delivered full-bodied, cinematic portraits of considerable immediacy, humanity, and discernment of the events unfolding around him. His work not only provides vital dispatches of ongoing conflict,...

Keri Russell is heading back to the ’80s. The star of FX’s “The Americans” leads the cast in the newly released first trailer for “Cocaine Bear,” Elizabeth Banks’ upcoming thriller film.
The movie is based loosely on a true story from 1985, where authorities discovered a dead bear in the Chattahoochee National Forest of Georgia. The bear was found to have died after ingesting 75 pounds of 95-percent pure cocaine from a duffel bag in the woods. The bag belonged to Andrew C. Thornton II, a former narcotics officer and convicted drug smuggler, who dropped the supplies while flying over the forest during a supply run.
Thornton died during the same plane ride after getting caught in his parachute and crashing to the ground, while the dead bear was stuffed and bounced around from owner to owner. Currently, it can be seen on display at the Kentucky Fun Mall in Lexington.

For Academy voters, it’s time to get serious about watching movies.
But do they have access to all of the films they should be seeing before voting begins on Dec. 12 (for the 10 categories that have a shortlist) or Jan. 12 (for the rest of the categories)? Not exactly – at least not in the Academy Screening Room, the members-only online platform that has become the main way for studios to put their films in front of Oscar voters.
Those voters currently can watch “The Banshees of Inisherin” in the screening room, but not “The Fabelmans.” “Tár” is available to them, but “Women Talking” is not. Yes to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” but no to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” or “The Whale.”
After a new batch of nearly two dozen films were added on the Tuesday evening of Thanksgiving week, there were 119 films available in the Academy Screening Room,...

Call Jane is a 2022 drama movie directed by Phyllis Nagy starring Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver.
A movie that tells of a real life case, which rattled society in a specific era, and mobilized a community and shifted public opinion.
Premise
Chicago, 1968. Joy, a housewife, leads a normal and sheltered life alongside her husband and daughter, while the city and the nation is on the brink of political and social upheaval. Joy’s life take a turn when she contends with an unintended pregnancy that puts her life at risk, and nobody is willing to help her in a time when abortion is not legal. This leads her on a journey seeking a solution to her situation, and venturing on participating in organizing a clandestine group of women, led by Virginia.
Movie Review
A very well directed movie, in which the director seems to not seek to outshine the story being told.

This weekend may mark the high mark for specialized films for the rest of the year. The last few weeks have seen some titles with the highest potential open, with variable success at best. There are some positive, if muted, signs of interest — but not enough to forestall significant losses when theaters turn over their screens en masse to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Disney).
The successes include “Till” (United Artists), which has grossed up to 6.5 million total in its fourth weekend, and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (Searchlight), which has grossed 3 million so far. Together, they are generating close to two thirds of the specialized business.
Better-than-average results continue for “Triangle of Sadness” (Neon) and “Decision to Leave” (Mubi). “Triangle” grossed more than 3 million — more than double of director Ruben Östlund’s earlier “The Square” and “Force Majeure” combined.
“Decision” is now the second-highest art house-oriented non-English language film released this year.
