The Devil’s Bath is an upcoming psychological drama produced by Ulrich Seidl. Directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the acclaimed duo behind Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge, this film brings their unique macabre storytelling to Shudder from June 28. A Haunting New Journey Set in late 18th-century Austria, the film follows Agnes, portrayed by Anja Plaschg. Newly married, Agnes’s bliss quickly turns into a struggle for autonomy against her oppressive mother and indifferent husband. The claustrophobic setting mirrors classic folk horror, yet its psychological depth offers more than typical genre fare. Historical Context Enhances Fear The Devil’s Bath is...

Plot: Austria in the 18th century. Forests surround villages. Killing a baby gets a woman sentenced to death. Agnes readies for married life with her beloved. But her mind and heart grow heavy. A gloomy path alone, evil thoughts arising.
Review: Depression has been the backbone of many films for some time now. Whether it’s Midsommar and depression caused by loss, or heck even back to Jimmy Stewart in It’s A Wonderful Life, it can really shape a narrative. And it’s only recently that we’ve started to become more accepting of mental health problems. Given how much human history exists, there are countless real-life events that highlight just how primitive we as humans can be. The Devil’s Bath does its job to highlight a time in Austrian history that most would rather forget.

Upper Austria, 1750. A middle-aged woman holding a baby stands at the mouth of a waterfall that seems to stretch all the way up to heaven on a cascade of white foam. What happens next won’t come as much of a surprise to anyone familiar with the rest of Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz’s captivatingly bleak — and religiously familicidal — body of work: She lobs the child over the edge, with no discernible expression on her face as the little bundle plummets out of sight.
From there, the woman immediately reports herself to the local authorities. The next time we see her, she’s on public display in a local forest, her decapitated head resting in an iron cage next to her corpse. This morbid exhibit is complete with an illustrated plaque that’s meant to serve as a warning for those who would dare to trespass against God. It doesn’t.

Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s The Devil's Bath, starring Anja Plaschg (who is also the composer as Soap&Skin) with Maria Hofstätter and David Scheid, shot by Martin Gschlacht (Silver Bear winner in the 2024 Berlin Film Festival) with costumes by Tanja Hausner (Jessica Hausner’s sister and longtime collaborator) is executive produced by Ulrich Seidel (Rimini and Sparta) and Bettina Brokemper.

Horror author Paul Tremblay developed a deep love of spooky stories early on, and he tackles the haunted films genre with his newest novel, “Horror Movie” (out Tuesday via William Morrow and Company). The plot concerns a ’90s cult classic horror movie which left all but one cast member dead and the dark stories that are dredged up as a remake comes closer to reality.
Professionally, Tremblay is no stranger to scary movies, as his 2019 novel “The Cabin at the End of the World” was adapted into M. Night Shyamalan’s 2023 film “Knock at the Cabin.” Next up is an adaptation of his 2015 book “A Head Full of Ghosts,” which is set to be produced by Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, who also helmed dark horror films like “Goodnight Mommy” and “The Lodge.”

Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala already established a reputation for bleak, atmospheric horror with their debut feature, Goodnight Mommy, and their bleaker follow-up, The Lodge. Their latest, The Devil’s Bath, continues that trend with their most despairing effort yet, mining period horror from history. It’s an affecting yet grueling depiction of life in 18th-century Austria, immersive in the way it creates profound, methodical empathy for a tender-hearted woman trapped by isolation.
A shocking act of violence opens The Devil’s Bath, one that lays the narrative groundwork while offering ample horror to hold fans over as it shifts into a meticulous character study. It’s the type of cold open that’s unsettling and taboo, shaking up the filmmakers’ usual depiction of evil children. From there, the film introduces Agnes (Anja Plaschg), a gentle soul with an affinity for kindness and nature. We meet Agnes on the day...

"Please don't cast me into hell!" Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for the Austrian horror drama film titled The Devil's Bath, which originally premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Des Teufels Bad, in German, is the latest film from acclaimed genre filmmakers Severin Fiala & Veronika Franz from Austria, directors of horror hits Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge previously. Journey back to 18th century Austria, where a woman faces a grim fate for a horrifying crime. As Agnes prepares for her wedding, sinister forces stir, plunging her into darkness and despair. Starring Anja Plaschg, Maria Hofstätter, and David Scheid. This earned mostly positive reviews out of Berlinale: while "punishingly grim and has some pacing issues, this is a gripping psychological study by directors operating with formidable command." // Continue Reading ›...

The Devil’s Bath – the latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy (the original, not the Naomi Watts remake) and The Lodge – has been acquired by Shudder, with the streaming service planning to release it in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand on June 28th. With that date just a few weeks away, Shudder has released a trailer for the film… and oddly, they chose to release it through the Letterboxd X account first, as you can see below. But it has since made its way to YouTube and is now embedded at the top of this article.

There are horror movies that don’t dive straight into the most frightening parts with all those jumpscares, loud sounds and rivers of blood. On the contrary, they set a chilling atmosphere of danger coming to swallow the characters and create a never-ending sense of unease quite slowly through perfectly developing suspense.
Here are 7 slow-burn horror must-watches, handpicked by Reddit.
The Wicker Man (1973)
First comes the cultish genre’s staple that follows a Christian detective during the investigation of the disappearance of a pagan tribe’s girl. It creates a very unsettling and even paranoidal atmosphere by blending mythical elements with onscreen reality.
Funny Games (2007)
Naomi Watts and Tim Roth’s psychological horror is a perfect example of a movie that takes time for the full extent of the terror to be revealed on screen. It focuses on a couple who get captured and tormented by two young criminals on their vacation.

Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” The show premiered on April 25th (you can read our review Here) – and to mark the occasion, a new addition to the team here at JoBlo.com, Kyanna Mondezie, was given the opportunity to conduct interviews with several members of the cast: George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson, and Yuyu Kitamura. You can hear what they had to say about their experience working on the show by checking out the video embedded above. Also interviewed were series creator Steve Yockey and showrunner Beth Schwartz.

A couple months ago, we learned that The Devil’s Bath – the latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy (the original, not the Naomi Watts remake) and The Lodge – had been acquired by Shudder, with the streaming service planning to release it in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime this summer. Now we know the exact release date. The Devil’s Bath will be available to stream on Shudder as of June 28th.
The Devil’s Bath – which has been described as “utterly harrowing”, “chilling”, and “impactful” – is a German-language film that is set in 1750 Austria, at a time when villages were surrounded by deep forests. There, a deeply religious woman has married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day,...

The Devil’s Bath debuts on Shudder June 28, Variety reports today.
The film makes its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for the German-language horror movie: “In 1750 Austria, a deeply religious woman named Agnes has just married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day, she is increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path leading to evil thoughts, until the possibility of committing a shocking act of violence seems like the only way out of her inner prison.”

The Austrian writers and directors behind pitch-black horror hits “Goodnight Mommy” and “The Lodge” are bringing their newest vision to America.

You always hope your indie movie might get some extra attention.
That specific wish became a reality for the team behind “My Dead Friend Zoe,” which premiered at SXSW this past weekend. From army veteran Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, the personal film tells the story of a shattered veteran (Sonequa Martin-Green) haunted by the ongoing presence of her deceased platoon mate (Natalie Morales). It was recently announced that three-time Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce is an executive producer on the project.
When chatting with Martin-Green about her starring role on “Star Trek: Discovery,” we also asked the actress about what happens when a little indie movie that is currently seeking distribution combines with the kind of tabloid superpower that makes Fox News shake in its boots. Namely: What did you think when you found out Travis Kelce would be one of the producers on this project, in terms of eyeballs on your work?...

The year is 2296. The place is Filly, the post-apocalyptic “vault” where Lucy (Ella Purnell) must fight to survive in a world already on the edge of extinction. The place is filled with scavengers, ne’er-do-wells, and rules you can’t learn until you’ve broken them.
The place is actually Hotel San Jose in Austin, Texas — but it’s an impressive disguise.
TV and film activations once again took over South by Southwest in March, inviting fans and curious visitors into the world of shows like “Fallout,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Halo,” “3 Body Problem,” and more. For better or worse, the small screen is getting smaller. For every 80-inch TV mounted on a wall, there’s someone downloading their favorite shows to watch on a phone while commuting. When showrunner Michelle Paradise and co-creator Alex Kurtzman sat down to begin planning what would ultimately become the final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” they had one big goal: “Bigger and bolder,” of course, Paradise said.
They didn’t originally know the program would be coming to an end, but they still wanted to take some big swings when it came to keeping the story fresh for Season 5 — and that means compelling villains.
“They’re kind of like the Bonnie and Clyde of the ‘Star Trek’ universe,” Kurtzman said to IndieWire about the new baddies that fans will meet in the premiere episode. “But like all great villains, they have a sympathetic story. You know the old adage: The villain is the hero of their own story. That’s very true for them, and I think ultimately you’ll love them as much as you’ll see them as the villain.

When asked to sum up Season 5 of “Star Trek: Discovery” in just one word, star Sonequa Martin-Green went with “Culminating.”
The Paramount+ series will conclude its run with the forthcoming season, premiering April 4. Although cast and crew didn’t know this would be the final season when they shot it, as Martin-Green tells IndieWire, they are feeling good about where they end things.
“I was moved, I was touched, I think I cried,” Martin-Green said about the moment she read the final script. “…So I just think that it’s special, I think it’s bold, I think it’s beautiful, I think it’s poetic.”
That doesn’t mean she was ready to spill about any specific details such as where her character, Michael Burnham, might end up — or with who. When asked if there would be a happily ever after for Burnham and David Ajala’s Book, she...

Ah, Y2K. The millennium bug that induced widespread fear over the possibility of a worldwide infrastructure crash once 2000 arrived becomes infectious fodder for a teen comedy infused with horror and nostalgia. Armed with a pitch-perfect, game-for-anything ensemble and great practical effects behind the carnage and calamity, A24’s latest offers up the most entertaining, funny-bone-tickling apocalyptic scenario since This Is the End.
Comedian and actor Kyle Mooney, who co-wrote the script with writer/producer Evan Winter, makes his directorial debut here. He kicks Y2K off with a potent dose of dial-up nostalgia as it sets the stage for one unpredictable 1999 New Year’s Eve party from hell. Shy teen Eli has an easier time connecting with his unrequited crush Laura (Rachel Zegler) over AOL, despite his extraverted best friend Danny’s constant nudging and encouragement to finally make a move. At the dawn of SXSW 2024 and the heart of Austin lies The Clive Bar, this year’s home to Paramount+ Presents: The Lodge, a Paramount+ experience. Now a staple of SXSW, this activation included themed sets tied to various Paramount properties, along with drinks, music, and an airbrush tattoo station.
Visitors were greeted by the rustic decor and bar setting, designated installations for each series or movie, as well as photo opps — all of it spanning three floors. There were nods to “The Chi,” “Halo,” “Mean Girls,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Lawman: Bass Reeves,” “Survivor,” the NFL and NCAA March Madness, and the upcoming Showtime limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow.” Three bars offered three different signature themed cocktails for visitors to sip while they explore. On Monday March 10, The Lodge will host the premiere of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 4, a tentpole series for Paramount+ (debuted in the CBS All Access days), featuring cast and crew.

Plot: Recently released from prison, former thief and drug addict Rob gets a job caring for Doctor Nina Jekyll, who’s recovering from a broken leg. But the more time Rob spends around Nina, the more it becomes clear there’s something strange going on in the Jekyll mansion.
Review: Founded in 1934, the Hammer film production company became very popular when it started releasing horror films in the mid-1950s. From that point through the early ‘70s, Hammer was one of the biggest names in horror… but then they found it hard to compete with the big horror films of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and things gradually fell apart for them. In 1979, the company went into liquidation. Attempts to revive the Hammer brand began in 2008, and we’ve seen some notable releases from the company in recent years: Let Me In, The Resident, The Woman in Black, and The Lodge among them.

The 74th Berlin Film Festival (also known as Berlinale locally) has wrapped its 2024 run following two weeks of screenings, with a big ceremony again in Berlin on Saturday evening, announcing the winner of the Golden Bear (Goldener Bär) for Best Film. That top prize from this year was given to yet another intriguing French documentary, this one titled Dahomey, directed by Mati Diop (of the film Atlantics previously). It follows the journey of 26 plundered royal treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey exhibited in Paris, now being returned to the original home of Benin in Africa. A French documentary also won the Golden Bear last year, too. Is this the hot trend now? The festival also awarded Sebastian Stan for Best Performance; along with Martin Gschlacht for Best Cinematography in the film The Devil’s Bath (Des Teufels Bad) - the latest from the Austrian co-directors of Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge previously.

Austrian filmmaking duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala seemingly never met a remote woodland setting that didn’t feel like the right place to strand a traumatized woman. Following Goodnight Mommy (the chilling 2014 original, not the limp American remake) and their English language debut The Lodge, they inch away from horror without relinquishing the unsettling atmosphere or taste for the macabre in their intense character study, The Devil’s Bath (Des Teufels Bad). While it’s punishingly grim and has some pacing issues, this is a gripping psychological study by directors operating with formidable command.
Early on, Franz and Fiala’s new film recalls Robert Eggers’ The Witch, despite being set more than a century later, in 1750. It has a comparable emphasis on ambience and authentic historical detail, which is possibly even more granular here. But vague suggestions of witchcraft quickly turn out to be misleading, with the story instead fueled by converging forces of religion,...

Although it comes from the filmmaking duo behind “Goodnight Mommy” and “The Lodge,” Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s “The Devil’s Bath” is not a horror movie. Its sinister, woodsy atmospherics, where wet leaves mingle with mud and fishscales and menstrual blood, may suggest witchcraft or devil worship. But it is actually something far more frightening — an exploration, based on real records, of a chapter of Austrian history so dark it could be a black hole, which might account for its invisibility to posterity. But if the story is so pitilessly bleak you may want to look away, the filmmaking craft is so compelling that you can’t. The world of “The Devil’s Bath” is one that cannot be easily escaped, however much one might want, in the words of one of the women it emblematizes, “to be gone from it.”

A new psychological horror movie, The Devil’s Bath, is on the way from The Lodge and Goodnight Mommy filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Variety reports that horror streaming service Shudder has acquired the film ahead of its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.
The Devil’s Bath is expected to release this summer.
The German-language horror film is “set in 1750 Austria, at a time when villages were surrounded by deep forests. There, a deeply religious woman has married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day, she is increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path leading to evil thoughts, until the possibility of committing a shocking act of violence seems like the only way out of her turmoil.”
The film stars Anja Plaschg, David Scheid, Maria Hofstätter, Camilla Schielin, and Lorenz Tröbinger.

Playtime has boarded “The Devil’s Bath,” a period psychological thriller directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the Austrian filmmaking duo behind the critical and commercial hit “Goodnight Mommy.”
The movie reteams Franz and Fiala with Ulrich Seidl, who also produced “Goodnight Mommy.”
Set in rural Austria in 1750, “The Devil’s Bath” stars Anja Plaschg, the up-and-coming singer and composer known as Soap & Skin. Plaschg plays Agnes, a young married woman who feels oppressed in her husband’s world which is devoid of emotions and limited to chores and expectations. A pious and highly sensitive woman, Agnes falls into a deep depression, before committing a shocking act of violence that she sees as the only way out of her inner prison.
Along with starring in “The Devil’s Bath,” Plaschg also composed the music for the film. Based on historical records, the movie is inspired by the true stories...

Bleecker Street has acquired U.S. rights to Sasquatch Sunset, the mysterious new feature from renowned filmmakers David and Nathan Zellner (Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter), Deadline reports today.
Riley Keough (The Lodge), Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland: Double Tap, Vivarium), Nathan Zellner, and Christophe Zajac-Denek (“Twin Peaks: The Return”) star in the film.
As for plot, details remain scarce at this time other than it’s described as “a year in the life of a singular family.”
What we do know is that Eisenberg is playing a Sasquatch. As in, a head to toe hairy cryptid.
In a recent interview with Variety, the actor teased that he’d be going full cryptid in Sasquatch Sunset. “I play a Sasquatch: full makeup, full body hair, no lines. I grunt, but no lines,” he told the outlet. “I’m so looking forward to this.”
That seems to hint toward the possibility of this film...

It’s entirely possible that Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala would have waited it out for another Park City showing – Sundance launched the tandem’s third feature The Lodge back in 2019. Following their docu debut Kern (2012) and Goodnight Mommy (2014), The Devil’s Bath (aka Des Teufels Bad) went into production in January of last year — so this has been in post for a chunk of time. This film based on women, religion and ritual murders this is based on an unknown chapter of European history and stars Birgit Minichmayr, Maria Hofstätter, David Scheid, Camilla Schielin and Anja Plaschg.…...
