Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The film focuses on a group of teenage girls that get trapped in an underwater Mayan ruin with a shark. The sense of peril is constant throughout, and most of the movie has a very claustrophobic feel. The girls often scream and cry in fear.
  • The water is very murky and dark, which leads to many jump scares.
  • All of the attacks are intense, particularly the scene where the characters try to climb the cliff and the ending.
  • Characters are swept away violently by a strong current as they try to navigate through the ruins.
  • A girl is shown being bullied at the beginning of the film. She is almost in tears. This might be upsetting for some.
  • There are a few tense and emotional family moments.
  • At times, body parts of previous victims are shown suddenly, usually causing a jump scare. Some of these images are graphic.
  • The Mayan temple has a creepy atmosphere to it.
  • Jumpscares, where the sharks appear out of nowhere, show up multiple times.
  • A jumpscare where a girl tries to touch a fish and it unnaturally screeches at her.
  • The appearance of the shark is unusual and creepy. It has scars all over it's body and its eyesockets are transparent since it is blind.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A character is suddenly grabbed by a shark. Blood spreads through the water, and he is shown screaming as the shark drags him away.
  • A character falls from a cliff into the water and is eaten by sharks. The body is ripped in half, but the scene is dark, so not a lot of gore is shown.
  • A shark suddenly pops up and eats a character. Some blood is shown.
  • A shark grabs a character's diving tank and chews on it. She wiggles free but then drowns. She coughs and bubbles come out of her mouth and nose as she dies. The life is shown leaving her eyes as she slowly sinks. This is probably the most disturbing scene in the movie.
  • As the girls swim through the flooded ruins, they receive several minor cuts and bruises.
  • Sharks attack characters as they swim for safety. One character is shown with deep teeth prints in her back after being bitten and pulled under by a shark. Another character is pulled under, and she stabs the shark in the eye to try to get it to release her. Both characters are shown with bloody injuries.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A girl's father is eaten in front of her before he can help them escape.
  • A girl takes her oxygen tank off to avoid a shark eating her and she is shown slowly drowning underwater.
  • A girl gets stuck trying to swim to the surface, with a low oxygen tank. She has to shove her face against an underwater rock to try and get a small bit of air to keep going.
  • The girls find an air pocket underwater but the air is toxic and they have a limited amount of time to find an escape route.
