He is possibly based off a character from one of the folk tales in One Thousand and One Nights, also called Arabian Nights, a famous comedic opera was also based off this story. In the story Abu Hassan is a businessman from Baghdad who is heavily in debt, he comes up with a scheme to clear his debt by faking his death with the help of his wife, Zobeide. After Zobeide announces her husband has died she attempts to seduce the man Abu owes the most money to, she convinces him she has been in love with him for some time. As Zobeide is considered to be one of the most beautiful women in Baghdad the creditor falls for her and agrees to forgive Abu's debt and pay what he owes to the other creditors so that they will not come after Zobeide.
