Riyadh Khalaf looks at homelessness which is prevalent among the LGBTQ+ community. They account for 1 in 4 of young homeless people.
Unfortunately the production had trouble finding a young homeless person. So they had to make do with a middle aged one from Birmingham.
Damien originally from Ireland has been homeless for years. Because of his sexuality he is also marked out for homophobic attacks, this includes his bedding being set on fire while he was sleeping.
Damien also has alcohol issues which is noted in the program. Other people featured seemed to have had mental health issues and I would not be surprised if drugs might have been involved as well.
The program expanded its remit to feature people who had to live in hostels, insecure accommodation or sofa surf.
John lived in a small town in Scotland that had no gay scene and had to suffer constant homophobic abuse. You can see it has had a toll on his mental health. While filming a segment he was verbally abused. It was a shock to the production team.
Riyadh examines some of the issues for this. The main one being rejection from parents once they sense their child is gay. Parental rejection, homophobic abuse see young people moving to the cities. It can lead to more problems where they can easily be preyed on.
This was one episode where you can sense the danger of homophobic abuse. It was open and out there.
