Could be better

Not a bad episode. Just the continuity errors are frustrating. She cant hold a 50 ton C-130 from falling, yet in season premiere she lift a 6000 (or more) ton submarine from water. Looks like dialogs are more important then the story. Its could be better.

Long Live Sanvers
ThomasDrufke7 November 2017
Well, we knew this day was coming. With Floriana Lima soon exiting her series regular role, the Sanvers relationship wasn't exactly a guarantee going forward. This episode saw the end of that relationship for good. Since Alex and Maggie began dating almost a year ago now, the show saw a significant improvement in quality, which mostly had to do with the fact that these characters finally had depth and something for us to cling onto. I don't necessarily think that will end with this relationship seeing its final kiss, but it will be interesting to see what ensues going forward.

Morgan Edge once again took the honor of being the villain of the week as he made yet another move on Lena Luthor, this time attempting to tarnish her legacy once and for all. He found a way to blame her for the mysterious children being sick from lead poisoning. It wasn't an interesting plot, but it did give Kara and Samantha a reason to build a bond in their fight against Edge. Samantha seems to be adapting to her apparent Kryptonian descent, and I think we're in for a huge mid- season turn from Samantha aka Reign.

While the Edge stuff wasn't all that interesting, I'm glad the show finally decided to build on something that happened the season before and use it for a future plot line. Although it wasn't executed all that well, I'm glad they aren't just forgetting potential hazards that may have caused in seasons past. That to me is a step in the right direction for the show. It does however bring up a larger question: Is Edge the big bad of this year or does that title perhaps belong to Reign?

Overall, it wasn't a great episode, but it was one that definitely built upon characters and plot points for the season to come. Even though that should be something a show should do automatically, that hasn't been a strong point for Supergirl from the get-go.

Supergirl - S03E05 Damage
j_forbesy8 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This season of Supergirl hasn't quite hit the ground running for me. While I've liked most of what this season has given us, it is not even close to standing up next to the start season 2 produced.

This episode was very much like the others this episode. While there were some aspects I did like, I felt that there was a lot I didn't. Starting on the stuff I didn't, I think this episode in many ways undermined some things from last season. Last season we saw how smart and efficient both Winn and Lena are with doing calculations and this episode showed that their biggest one last year, that from memory they had ages to calculate, was actually wrong. While in the end it wasn't a massive disaster, it still showed how they were wrong in their biggest moment.

Another example is with Alex and Maggie. I really liked what they did last season with them because it felt natural. However it was the background nature of the it happened that made it fit with the show. At this point of the season, and especially this episode, I feel as though Alex's only purpose is to be in this relationship and the drama that followed. I also think this episode did undermine what they set up last season with them simply because of how far they have gone from getting together, to getting married, to breaking up because one wants a kid. There are many other shows that have "kids or no kids" problem and it is usually dealt with well by pushing it to the side until a more appropriate time, where with Supergirl, it feels like they had to address it now for the sake of drama. Realistically, they have been together less then a year, and looking at the relationship points they have ticked off since the end of last season, it makes me feel as though they have wasted what was a strong relationship to begin with.

Getting a bit into what I did like this episode, I am really enjoying the Morgan Edge vs Lena Luthor arc. I really enjoyed Lena last season and they have done the right thing by keeping her around and involving her more into the fabric of the show. I feel as though if Kara revealed her identity to Lena, I would be fine with it because they have done such a good job working her into the show.

The other story arc I am really liking is with Samantha as Reign. While they haven't jumped too deep into it, I am liking how they are slowly setting it up. My concern with it however is the are setting it up that she will be a villain but I don't see how they are going to pull off the villainous turn. Unless Supergirl or Superman were directly responsible for something that has directly happened to Samantha and she just doesn't know that they were responsible. However with the typical CW story arcs, I can see that Reign will be made at Supergirl because she was responsible for losing her long lost family that she has no idea about.

Overall, while I had a fair few negatives, the things I was positive about are the big things for this season. If they continue this Morgan Edge vs Lena Luthor story and write the Reign story really well for the rest of the season, we could be in for a strong season 3.

Girl Power!!

I'll miss Sanvers :(

Supercorp was AMAZING

I love the Sam and Kara bond

James and Lena keeps switching from him being mean and not trusting her to a weird forced friendship? Not sure I'm down with it yet. Wish we could get more Winn and Lena friend moments.

Edge is evil. Great villain!

Supercorp for the Win!!

The relationship between Kara and Lena continues to be the healthiest portrayal of friendship, love, and support on the entire CW. The romantic undertones are also paralleling the Clark/Lois pairing so, SO well. Very exciting, I can't wait to see what's next for this iconic duo.

And ... We're Back!
lassegalsgaard24 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
One of the prominent A-list crew members that have been involved with the Arrowverse for some time at this point is Kevin Smith. He started out as a director on an episode of "The Flash," and continued on into "Supergirl" during its second season. With this episode, he has made a total of five episodes in the Arrowverse, and while some of them have been very good, there have also been some stinkers. I don't know if he is fully aware of what he is doing with these characters, unless he has a good screenplay, which is doesn't look like he's had for the the majority of the episodes he has directed. This time, he has to deal with a lot of things at once, including one of the biggest things that we had seen coming for a long time. And I think this is one of those episodes that had huge potential to be both emotional and satisfying at the end, yet failed at being either. This is another low episode for this show, and one of the least effective episodes that Smith has ever directed on any of the shows.

What worked for this episode? Not that much. This episode is one of my least favorite of all time when it comes to "Supergirl." That said, there were some things that I enjoyed. The big thing for me was the subplot featuring Alex and Maggie's breakup. I think that part of the episode was very well-executed and it had some emotion to it, and all those scenes were also very well-written, even though they were probably the only scenes to be that. I liked the progression of that subplot and I especially liked the ending, as it seems like we are going home to Midvale where they were raised. Could this mean that we might see some Dean Cain in flashbacks? One would hope.

I also liked how the writers subtly moved along the possible romance between James and Lena. So far, they have both had amazing chemistry with each other and these are the two characters that I would actually buy as a couple, because of the simularities they have. They are both hard workers, however, they are also both very secretive when it comes to their past. They seem very similar like that, so I think it would be great if they got something going.

The rest of the episode is a huge disappointment. Especially considering the fine nature of the last two episodes. I think the premise we were presented to in the episode was stupid, and I don't think that Morgan Edge works as a villain. Every scene that featured him made me laugh because of the horrible dialogue that the writers are continuing to give him. Adrian Pasdar is a good actor, but he doesn't get anything to work with, which makes him unable to create a good and relatable villain. And once again, his motivations were stupid and took the enjoyment of the episode don't to a low state.

I am also really unsatisfied with the inconsistency in Lena's character. The entire episode is about her trying to live with the fact that she might be the reason why so many kids are sick. She keeps telling that she wants to be everything but a real Luthor and that she is ashamed of herself. However, at the end of the episode, she is ready to kill Morgan Edge without even thinking twice, quoting that she needs to "do this like a real Luthor." This is a character that can be very interesting, but the writers have constantly failed to give her a strong story arc. That is why I am hoping for her romance with James, as it could end up becoming something memorable for her.

This episode also missed some great chances to set up more for Samantha. I have loved what they have done with her so far, but in this episode I found so many scenes that could have served the character much better than they ended up doing. There is really only one thing that hints to Reign in the episode, and it was one of the more on-the-nose hints they have made so far. I really hope the writers doesn't mess up the chance of creating a great villain, because they are too lazy to really develop her any further.

Finally!

Warning: Spoilers
Seems like finally somebody listened to my prayers and they are letting Maggie go. No more lesbians stories! Well, that would be too good to be true but I really hope so. Everything else was just about fine, your typical super hero stuff. Nothing really special but it gets the job done.
