A nice and heartful relation drama between two brothers
Breumaster31 July 2019
It's always nice, when dramas don't get too cheesy. This is about two brothers of different attitudes colliding 30 years after they spiltted up. They re-united at their father's funeral. One is an international manager, tied to a tied scedule with many communication over smartphone. He left home early because of the home situation. The other is a craftsman, leading a carpenter's workshop. After taking several drinks and some psychological obstacles, the two brothers start a journey on their lower motorbikes they had when they were fifteen and experience each other new. The best on this movie is, that it doesn't become too cheesy and had some fine moments, but also some comedic. This is no movie with big secial effects, but it takes some heart to watch it. No stuff for people searching for action, scifi, pure comedy, crime, thrillers, and many other genres. I voted it 7/10, because it's sure not the peak of filmhistory, but it's a solid drama with heart and it's sometimes a little bit silly, but close enough to reality to be enlighted with that brother's story. It's one of the better German movies.

Greets, Breumaster.

A feel-good road movie
DLochner6 April 2021
A warmly beautiful film, but two dissimilar brothers and the journey of a lifetime. You could say a typically German film. Sometimes a bit posed, sometimes a little too serious, but always entertaining and in the middle of life. Good music is included. A feel-good road movie.

Heartwarming roadmovie through Germany
socialme-5286310 July 2022
This movie made me regret that I never had a brother that left me alone with our terminally ill father, so I can reconnect with said brother.

Great acting by the main protagonists. While the movie is a light road movie-comedy, the connection or should I say disconnection between the brothers feels real. So does the reconnection of the two, which doesn't come as a surprise. There are no plot twists, or big surprises, but that doesn't matter: The journey through Germany and the Brother's past is the goal. The movie is beautifully shot at times and the soundtrack is great too. Enjoy the ride!

Tolerable German road movie with some fun characters
Horst_In_Translation8 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"25 km/h " is a new movie from Germany, very recently released, and this is a collaboration by director Goller and writer Ziegenbalg, both fairly known and successful here in Germany, but not among the elite you could say. Their collaboration here refelcts their experience though and the outcome is a pretty interesting film from start to finish during these almost 2 hours. This is mostly due to lead actor Lars Eidinger, who in his mid-30s now is without a doubt among Germany's most impressive performers. He is in almost every scene and next to him we get Bjarne Mädel, who definitely isn't bad, but even I as a Stromberg fan cannot deny that he only plays second fiddle to Eidinger most of the time. But he also has less bait. The storyline involving Mädel and Hüller's character is nowhere near the level of Eidinger's and Triebel's and their son's. These include the more dramatic moments of the film, but there is also a lot to laugh. Really a pity that the trailer took some of the film's more/most interesting scenes and served them to audiences already beforehand. The brawl early on would have been much more interesting not knowing about it and same for the joke with the police escorting the duo to the border. Oh well, still there is a lot more. I mentioned the brawl already, but I thought it was a bit much to be honest, just like at the other end of the loving/hating brothers scale the moment when Mädel tells Eidinger he loves him. But these are just minor flaws. Everything in-between is good to watch most of the time. Some of Germany's most famous actors these days (the two females I mentioned already plus Haase, Möhring, Lara, Potente...) add some solid spice as well. Shame I missed Brambach as I really like him. His role must have been minimal.

I think the table tennis scene was the best example of how the film made the right decisions. In an embarrassing Schweighöfer romantic comedy, they would have won it of course, but the way they handled it here instead was just as good, probably even better and certainly deeper with how they are trying to get their bikes back. Oh well, maybe these arrow shots were a bit too much by Möhring's character, but not that bad either. I also really really liked the very last shot with Eidinger's character ringing the door to his son, a perfect way to close the film on an open ending. The conversation with Triebel's character was fine too. She struggle with the call initially, then responded to it in a friendly way, but eventually ended it on a negative note again. Nobody knows how things will turn out after the credits roll in. It is not for us to see, but we know he is trying to avoid the same mistakes in the future that his father did. Aside from that, all the lighter outdoor moments that defined the term "road movie" here entertained me well. The film does not take itself more seriously than it has a right too and while it admittedly never reaches greatness, this is a good perspective I think because otherwise some sequences could have felt a bit on the cringeworthy side. The genre is not one that you'd really associate with German filmmaking, let alone German quality filmmaking, so I think it is good this film was made and it probably deserves some of the awards recognition it is inevitably going to get in the next few months. Go check this one out. I give it a thumbs-up.

It is never too late to live, love or have an adventure.
mjfhhh3 May 2019
Georg and Christian are brothers who grew up together in a small provincial town. Christian left many decades ago to make a success of himself and Georg remained where they grew up to look after their ailing father. When the brothers are reunited during their father's funeral they decide to put their differences aside in order to fullfil their childhood dream - to travel across country to the Baltic Sea. Riding their old motorbikes no faster than 25 kilometres per hour they have many adventures, while rediscovering life and each other, on the road that leads them to some unexpected places.

It is not the first time the director Markus Koller tells the story of two very different brothers, but this time it's a lighthearted comedy as breezy and light as a motorbike ride. Looking ridiculous, but also kind of cool, in their funeral suits Georg (Bjarne Madel) and Christian (Lars Edinger) have a real onscreen chemistry. Their awkward love/hate relationship will remind you of people you know. Add some picturesque landscapes, a dreamy soundtrack and real life comic situations and you get an inspired film with a real heart.

The patchwork of quirky characters never lets the story get boring and seeing Franka Potente in a small role was a true delight.

There's nothing particularly original about 25 km/h but it is a real gem of a road movie that will put a smile on your face.

Nice road movie from Germany
andythaler-580-36420212 July 2022
While I generally liked the movie, I am a bit split what is the more ridiculous idea:
  • that Lars Eidinger and Bjarne Mädel were raised in the rural Black Forest (unless their father was not a local farmer as in the story, but rather an immigrant from Hamburg), or
  • that 2 50-cc 2-stroke mopeds that have been in a garage for 30 years would easily start again.

Brilliant German road movie
berndfischer4 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
25km/h comes in a rare quality package: Good jokes, authenticity and a well told story. Two brothers lost sight of each other, then meet 30years later to bury their father. One of them went rich, the other one took care of their father, both of them driven by inner unrest. Soon they decide to realize an old childhood's dream, get on their old small mopeds and a remarkable trip through Germany begins. 25km/h is a modern german roadmovie, full of emotions, problems, laughter and interhuman relations. Also, both main characters Bjarne Mädel and Lars Eidinger are absolutely brilliant.

nice road trip movie
Stoolli6 August 2019
We watched the movie at a public viewing. The audience liked it. It is an entertaining story of two brothers making a road trip with a lot of jokes and fun, but also feelings. There were some refreshing unexpected events, but not too surpring. There isn't much action, but it is alright that way. RIght after the movie ended some of us including me said that we might rewatch the movie soon, just because it was so nice.

Could have been more
Winter_Nights_6 August 2021
I had great expectation watching this movie since Bjarne Mädel and Lars Eidinger are two of my favorite actors.

And yes, it was nice and quite entertaining to watch.

But somehow also a little flat and incoherent.

Also the two main actors played nice, I somehow did not believe they were two brothers from the 'Schwarzwald'.

What a beautiful story
Dowsen31 December 2022
I loved this movie. Seeing love between brothers, with the ugly side of a rivalry. Two brothers that could not be more different but still bound by their family. Many people will relate! It is pure joy to see these two men showing a great span of emotions. Taking a trip through Germany. Seeing many beautiful places. Developing the characters throughout the whole movie. No cliche. No cringe. A daring story of love between men without becoming gay. The world needs more of those movies. Inspirational, important and totally enjoyable. Takes this ride which starts dark but ends with beautiful lesson.

Warm, entertaining, moving
gphgrm0130 January 2024
This is one of my favorite films ever.

Two brothers in the middle of their middle-age crisis decide to be "spontaneous" and, in a spur of a moment, right after their father's funeral, decide to fulfill their boyish dream, and set on a silly journey on their old teenage motorbikes from their hometown in the south of Germany towards Baltic Sea on the north. On their road there, they have to fulfill also several silly challenges. This is moving, entertaining, funny, and everybody can identify with their problems and adventures. For those who know German lifestyle a bit more, it is clear how "scandalous" it must be for Germans to undertake anything "spontaneous", since Germans normally have everything pre-planned. But, sometimes, as it will be seen, they are actually craving for new adventures, and this is exactly what they need in life. I think everybody should see this film.

One of the very best road movies I've seen
inspirelake17 February 2024
I've seen a lot of road trip movies. Some are ok, some good, some excellent.

This very well paced film seemed unassuming enough in the write up and you feel it may be a little like so many other road trip films, where you enjoy them but forget them.

Wonderful actors, humour, talent, the totally unexpected and just the silliness of the premise are enchanting and wonderful.

Beautiful cinematography, realistic script and charming, intelligent scenes that showcase all the mixed emotions, highs and lows of the mix that makes us human and vulnerable.

The adventure is original. Two brothers and a whole lot of easy fun.
