The passive listening device, called "The Thing", that found its way to the American Embassy in Moscow, was placed inside a wooden carving of the Great Seal of the United States. It was designed by Léon Theremin, of Theremin musical instrument fame. It was presented to the American Ambassador Harriman by the Young Pioneers, Soviet version of the Boy Scouts.
