"Tjello" was a code word for "Germany" used by the west german Helmut Kohl government in a 1986s undercover arms deal with the Republic of South Africa. During the UN arms embargo against South Africa (Resolution 418) West Germany sold construction plans and engineering details for submarines to the Pieter Willem Botha government and delivered the papers via diplomatic channels. For security reasons "Karate" was used for "South Africa"; "Tjello" stood for "Germany". The operation was code named "Cover Story". After the secret deal was discovered, german engineers kept working in Cape Town for the South African government.
