Who wants to travel back to a time when the most significant threat to the nation was a red-scaled demon with a bifurcated tail and great taste in music? That’s right, folks! Satanic panic is back, thanks to Peacock‘s Hysteria! teaser trailer! Hide your kids! Say your prayers! Prepare for a moral panic that is more appealing than anything you see on today’s news!
Here’s the official (and lengthy) synopsis for Hysteria!:
“What are those kids up to? Whatever it is, it can’t be good.”
That fear haunts every generation. Children of the Atomic Age went on to terrifying their families by turning on, tuning in and dropping out in the sixties. Those same “free spirits” went on to vote for Reagan and called for censorship of the “obscene” and “satanic” heavy metal bands their own kids worshiped. Now, those kids are adults who rail against pronouns,...

With shows like Six Feet Under, Good Grief, Fun at the Funeral Parlor, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina putting the “fun” back in funeral homes, it’s high time a show came along to remind audiences how grim and mysterious these houses of death can be. That’s why I’d like to bring Chop Shop to your attention. Deadline says a new series starring Christina Ricci and Hamish Linklater is gaining buzz as it prepares to court a network.
Inspired by the Kathy Braidhill novel, Chop Shop retells the true crime story about the Lamb Funeral Home in 1980s Los Angeles. The following description comes courtesy of Deadline‘s exclusive article: When David Sconce — the Machiavellian scion of a Bible college football coach and a church organist — takes the reins of the family business, the seemingly All-American clan begins a jaw-dropping descent from saints to sinners. Desperate to keep their funeral home afloat,...

A year after releasing her New York Times bestselling 2015 novel, "Luckiest Girl Alive," author Jessica Knoll was ready to share a different yet tragically similar story: her own. In "Luckiest Girl Alive," protagonist Ani has orchestrated a new life for herself as a glamorous magazine editor. Her shiny facade hides a challenging past, though: Ani - formerly known as TiffAni - had survived a vicious rape in high school and, later, a school shooting orchestrated by a friend. A powerful 2016 Lenny essay revealed that Ani's journey wasn't so dissimilar to her creator's. Knoll, too, had been the victim of a gang rape as a teen. "Dangerous Liaisons" is getting a television adaptation on Starz, the network behind "Outlander" and "American Gods." The 1782 French epistolary novel from Pierre Choderlos de Laclos is becoming an eight-episode series, which will debut on November 6, 2022. The book has seen multiple adaptations over the years, including the three-time Academy Award-winning 1989 film starring John Malkovich and Glenn Close. Then there's "Cruel Intentions," the 1999 modern adaptation which reimagines the classic story against the backdrop of wealthy high school teenagers in New York City.
The critically-acclaimed story will now head to television and the focus will be on the origin story of the novel's characters. The Starz series will illustrate how Marquise de Merteuil (Alice Englert) and the Vicomte de Valmont (Nicholas Denton) met as passionate young lovers in Paris and will represent the extravagance of the French aristocracy ahead of the French revolution. The couple is known for their expertise in the arena...

Set on Halloween 1963, Norman Partridge’s novel Dark Harvest is headed to the screen, with David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night, “Hannibal”) directing a feature film that was at one point in time scheduled for release on September 9, 2022. That’s likely no longer the case, however, as we’re now less than a month from that day with no marketing in sight.
But we expect the marketing campaign for Dark Harvest will begin soon, as the MPA has just officially handed the upcoming feature film adaptation an “R” rating this week for…

Quentin Tarantino was at the Rome Film Festival last night to receive a lifetime achievement award from the festival and Italian horror legend Dario Argento.
During a wide-ranging on-stage talk about his career with fest head Antonio Monda, Tarantino discussed his influences, behind-the-scenes anecdotes from his movies and his appreciation for Italian cinema.
At one point, Tarantino was asked whether he would consider making a movie in Italy, specifically at Rome’s famous Cinecitta Studios, site of classic movies including Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, La Dolce Vita and more recently, The English Patient.
The American filmmaker responded enthusiastically: “I would love that. I know my wife would love that. That would be special and wonderful, especially to shoot at Cinecitta. I need to come up with the right story.”
About Italian films of the 70s and 80s, the Pulp Fiction and Django director said: “I was lucky enough to come of age in the 70s.

Quentin Tarantino says he has “no idea” what his next film will be. Could it be “Kill Bill 3”?
“Why not?” the director said when pressed on this burning issue on Tuesday at the Rome Film Festival, where he received a lifetime achievement award from Italian horror maestro Dario Argento.
But Tarantino’s also got other projects on the horizon. They include a film criticism book and possibly a TV series, as Tarantino told talk show host Fabio Fazio, of Italian state broadcaster Rai, on Sunday, before adding: “But first I want to make a comedy.”
Comedy seems to be on Tarantino’s mind. During an onstage conversation with Rome fest chief Antonio Monda, he described an unspecified project that sounded very funny.

Even while her character is battling alcoholism, jet-setting around the world for her job and trying to solve a murder, some of the most complex moments Kaley Cuoco has to perform on HBO Max’ “The Flight Attendant” only take place in that character’s mind.
Her Cassie Bowden retreats into a mind palace, a device that the story uses so that she can comb through her — admittedly fuzzy — memories and have imaginary conversations with her dead one-night stand.
Diving into a protagonist’s perspective this deeply allows the audience to see different colors of them — ones they might otherwise filter out from interactions with other characters. Even though the events in these scenes aren’t happening in the real world of the show, they still provide opportunities for growth and emotional catharsis, which moves the characters along in their journeys and requires the acting approach to be just as grounded as any other scene work.

Alice Englert (“Beautiful Creatures,” “Ratched”) and Nicholas Denton (“Glitch,” “Pillars”) will star as Merteuil and Valmont in Starz’s “Dangerous Liaisons” TV series, the pay TV channel said Thursday, describing the show as “the story of a young woman who negotiates love, sex, class and power to navigate an oppressive, unjust establishment on the brink of collapse.”
Per Starz, “Dangerous Liaisons” is a bold reimagining of the iconic characters from Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic 18th century novel and tells the origin story of how the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont meet as passionate young lovers in Paris on the eve of revolution. Driven to right the wrongs of their past, we follow the couple as they rise from the slums of Paris and scale the heights of the French aristocracy, seducing and manipulating both the nobility and each other to survive.

Lily Rabe is an actress from a different era — or at least that’s how it feels in watching one of her textured, layered, surprising performances. Whether it’s playing an Upper East Side mother in HBO’s “The Undoing” or the mysterious Karen in Amazon Prime Video’s “Tell Me Your Secrets,” Rabe has shown that she’s a true chameleon.
But Rabe, 38, has an added sense of mystery that often feels at odds in the world of incessant Instagram openness. In a way, she’s like an actress of the 1940s, one who is very deliberate about what she reveals both on screen and off.
“I’m quite introverted,” Rabe told IndieWire. “I love being alone. Staying home for a long period of time [for me] is not [difficult]. My work has always been my way to be social.” Part of it comes from her parents, actress Jill Clayburgh and playwright...

“Cruel Summer” piques curiosity on several levels. On the surface, Freeform’s marketing has been intense, with trailers and commercials giving just enough intrigue to entice fans — many of whom may not already be regular viewers of the network formerly known as ABC Family, given its common associations with millennial or Disney viewers. But the cable channel’s more recent shows (like “Good Trouble” and “Grown-ish”) have developed extensive followings, and there’s no doubt “Cruel Summer” will attract those same audiences.
But there’s another component to “Cruel Summer” that it’s weaponizing, and that’s nostalgia — though not in the same way Disney+ shows and other streaming series are using it.
