Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King is slated for a year-end release. The upcoming prequel to 2019’s adventure musical The Lion King is helmed by filmmaker Barry Jenkins who has made Oscar-winning films like If Beale Street Could Talk and Moonlight.
Jenkins recently appeared at CinemaCon 2024 and discussed his new Disney venture. The Moonlight director also addressed the biggest criticism his prequel film and its 2019 predecessor faced. Many fans doubt if 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King will also walk down the same path as director Jon Favreau’s film.

Disney is welcoming the king of the Pride Lands back to Las Vegas. The studio unveiled a stirring, all-new trailer of “Mufasa: The Lion King” on Thursday at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” is expected to focus on the early years of the eventual ruler of the animals, as well as his menacing younger brother Scar. The film will feature the voices of Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as the younger version of Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones in the 1994 film and 2019 remake) and Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons in the 1994 version and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the 2019 remake).
The brief but majestic footage, which isn’t yet available to the public, explores the same stunningly realistic African savannah as its predecessor and begins with the iconic “Lion King” overture. A young Mufasa is seen leaping over rhinos and all kinds of...

Nearly five decades before Kamala Harris ran for the U.S. presidency in 2020, Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to run for president in 1972. She had also made history in 1968 becoming the first Black woman elected to the U.S. congress serving in the House of Representatives. The Democrat’s slogan in her first campaign was “Fighting Shirley-Unbought and Unbossed.” Serving in the House of Representatives until 1983, Chisholm introduced numerous pieces of legislation and was at the forefront of the fight for racial and gender equality and the plight of the poor. She was also the founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus.

Shirley is a biographical movie about the life of Shirley Chisholm movie written and directed by John Ridley starring Regina King.
A schoolteacher, elected to Congress. It was the early 70s, and Shirley Chisholm was also the first African American woman to run for the Presidency of the United States. A woman who ran without any backing, representing the members of the working class, the minorities.
A movie filled with hope, faith, and feminism.
Indeed, more than a racial candidacy, Shirley Chisholm based her campaign on gender politics and minorities, paving the way for a hopeful future.
A film about faith, but above all about clear-cut American politics.
About the movie
Faith, hope, and a lot of political film of good ideas, faith, hope, and political consciousness. A movie with its good ideas well defined (we don’t deny them at any moment) and does everything possible to assert its thesis.

“I am running for President,” states Regina King as Shirley Chisholm in the official trailer for the film based on the life of the eponymous trailblazing Black politician. In 1968, Chisholm became the first Black representative in the United States Congress, elected to serve one of New York’s congressional districts. Four years later, she makes that bold proclamation about her intention to run for U.S. President, becoming the first Black candidate to run for the office. The movie, written and directed by Oscar winner John Ridley, debuts on Netflix on March 22. Watch the official “Shirley” trailer below.
As the film chronicles, Chisholm’s aspirations for the presidency were not met with universal encouragement. Even though she took on the arduous task of mounting a presidential campaign because she has “an opportunity to make a difference,” she faces scrutiny for her positions, being told she sounds “just like every other politician.

Since the Academy Awards were first handed out in 1929, only 23 Oscars have been awarded to performances given by Black actresses and actors. Hattie McDaniel made history for Black performers by winning for “Gone With the Wind” (supporting in 1939), while Sidney Poitier was the first male actor to prevail for “Lilies of the Field” (lead in 1963). Denzel Washington became the first two-time Black acting champion when he claimed victory for “Glory” (supporting in 1989) and “Training Day” (lead in 2001), with Mahershala Ali joining him years later for “Moonlight” (supporting in 2016) and “Green Book” (supporting in 2018). Halle Berry was the first, and so far only, Black Best Actress thanks to “Monster’s Ball” (2001). A female colleague once said that all movies about pregnancy fall under the category “body horror,” regardless of whether they’re a horror film or not. When I naively asked if that was true, she replied: Dude, have you ever been pregnant? Check, and mate. Pop culture’s overall view regarding bringing new life into the world as a simple, follow-the-manual miracle has stuck even into the 21st century: You get an adorable baby bump, gotta rush to the hospital, labor can be hard, and then [pop] out comes a newborn.

Jonathan Majors first appeared in the MCU as Victor Timely in 2021, and later as Kang the Conqueror in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in 2023. This movie kicked off Phase 5, starting the Multiverse Saga. However, “Quantumania” didn’t do too well. To make matters worse, right after the movie came out, Majors, who played the new main villain for the upcoming MCU phases, was arrested.
He was accused of hitting someone in the face, causing a cut behind their ear, and grabbing their hand and neck, which supposedly led to a bruised neck and a broken finger. Although Majors’ lawyers said these accusations were false, he was still found guilty and Disney fired him.
Now, there’s a lot of talk about who might replace him, with some saying the character Doom might take over as the main villain, and others suggesting that the “Kang Dynasty” movie might be dropped. The...

Jonathan Majors debuted in the MCU as Victor Timely back in 2021, and then as Kang the Conqueror in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ in 2023 in what was the first movie of Phase 5, also known as the beginning of the Multiverse Saga. ‘Quantumania’ wasn’t exactly successful, adding insult to injury, soon after the release of the blockbuster movie, the actor behind the villain who was supposed to mark the next few phases of the MCU was arrested.
According to the charges, Majors allegedly struck the alleged victim ‘about the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear.’ He also allegedly grabbed her hand and neck, causing bruising on the neck and a broken finger. And while his lawyers quickly provided evidence that such a thing never took place, the case was far from over, and Majors was eventually found guilty and fired by Disney.

Lionsgate Television just eliminated more than half of its development deals, IndieWire has confirmed. The reduction comes after Lionsgate’s $375 million acquisition of eOne from Hasbro. The eOne purchase, which on the television side brought over “Yellowjackets” and other series, mixed with general industry contraction in the post-Peak TV era, rationalized the sweeping cuts.
Lionsgate executives conducted a two-months-long review of the Lionsgate Television and eOne talent rosters, which together included nearly 60 overall and first-look deals. The number is now below 30; no names have been reported on either the “stay” or “go” side of the ledger.
Deadline first reported the news. A Lionsgate rep declined comment on this story.
It is pretty common for a company to slim down ahead of acquisition — just ask Paramount — but this round was pretty drastic. It is important to remember that during last year’s writers strikes, pretty much all overall deals were put on pause.

In the 95 years that they’ve been handing out Academy Awards, just 10 African-American actresses have won dating back to Hattie McDaniel’s famed supporting actress triumph for “Gone with the Wind” in 1940. Nine of those wins have come in Best Supporting Actress, with Halle Berry being the lone victor in Best Lead Actress for “Monster’s Ball” in 2002. Berry has expressed disappointment that no other Black winner has followed in her footsteps over the past two decades. But the truth is that while it was 51 years between McDaniel’s win and the second for Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost” in 1991, things have improved significantly over the past few decades for African American actresses and actors in terms of winning at the Oscars in the supporting categories in particular.
This year, there are five opportunities for Black performers to take home an acting trophy spread across three categories: Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Jeffrey Wright...

It’s not entirely surprising that our braveheart Mandalorian is not afraid of ghosts. One of the most joyous actors in the film industry, Pedro Pascal has been a fan favorite for quite some time now. Movies and shows like The Mandalorian, Narcos, Game of Thrones and Kingsman are prominent examples of his acting excellence.
People love him on and off the stage for his jolly and lovely nature. One of the hundred most influential people in the world of 2023 according to Time Magazine, Pedro Pascal undoubtedly has a lasting impression on the public.
It is interesting to note that Pascal seems to have a likeness for ghosts and supernatural phenomena. At least, this is what Domingo managed to reveal while interviewing Pascal.

If Beale Street Could Talk
Blood On Satan’s Claw, 10.55pm, Legend Xtra, February 19
Set in the aftermath of the English Civil War, when an urgent effort was underway to modernise ordinary people’s thinking and restore civilised values, Piers haggard’s folk horror classic uses diabolic motifs to tell a story whose underlying premise is a battrle of ideas. It sees an isolated village fall prey to the malign influence of a charismatic teenage girl with a penchant for cruelty, whose brutal gang the adults are at a loss as to how to deal with. Where spiritual authority fails, only academic learning offers hope, but there is a terrible price to pay. Cleverly shot in a way that further distinguishes the children from the preceding generation, this sophisticated film has deep roots and ongoing relevance today.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Sunday’s BAFTA Awards, where two films are expected to win big.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Or should I say, ‘ello guv’nor? We’re back here to type about this weekend’s BAFTA Awards, where we both expect “Oppenheimer” to dominate. As we discussed with our voices this week (no English accents required), I have Christopher Nolan’s awards juggernaut winning 10 honors — including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and — my most galaxy brain pick — Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt. It’s difficult to think of a director as young as Barry Jenkins who seems so clearly destined to be remembered as one of the greats. After dropping his moving, romantic debut feature “Medicine for the Melancholy” in 2008, Jenkins further honed his craft and became a household name (at least among any cinephiles worth their salt) with the release of his sophomore feature “Moonlight.” The tender, beautiful film was the subject of rapturous acclaim, and its groundbreaking and dramatic Best Picture win at the Oscars cemented it as an all-time great work of art.
Since then, Jenkins has only gone from strength to strength. His 2018 follow-up “If Beale Street Could Talk” was a similar critical darling. And his epic limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad,” which sadly went under the radar for much of the general public in 2021, was nothing short of stunning. All caught up on this year’s Oscar-nominated movies? Catch one of the winter’s biggest not-nominated movies. It’s one the whole family can enjoy.
The contender to watch this week: “Wonka“
Come with me and you’ll be in a world of Paul King‘s imagination. The “Paddington” director’s Willy Wonka prequel dominated the holiday box office en route to $553 million worldwide and counting. Now it’s also available to rent or purchase on VOD. Timothée Chalamet earned a Golden Globe nomination for the title role, but that was the extent of the movie’s awards favor aside from one BAFTA nod. In a rare rebuff for a big-budget original musical, none of its numbers made the Oscars’ Best Original Song shortlist. Oh well. “Wonka” is a pleasing movie, sugary but nowhere near as phoned-in as its early trailers suggested.
Other contenders:

This Oscar season, Colman Domingo became the first Afro Latino to receive a Best Actor nomination from the Academy, for his powerhouse performance in “Rustin.” It’s a deserving nod for a performer who has only recently broken through, but already has an incredible resume of performances to his name.
Initially a stage actor, Domingo first gained acting recognition in 2008 for his role in the ensemble of “Passing Strange”; he earned Tony and Olivier nominations for his acclaimed role in the 2010 musical “The Scottsboro Boys.” Despite his onstage success, his attempts to cross over to television and film proved more difficult. In an interview with the New York Times, he spoke about considering quitting acting entirely after facing numerous rejections for bit parts in prestige dramas. But his fortune turned around after a series of successes with minor roles in films, among them “Lincoln,” “42,” and “Selma.” In 2015, he joined...

“Oppenheimer” has surged ahead of its competition, potentially becoming one of the most dominant Oscar winners since “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008), which garnered eight statuettes. Looking at the state of the race post-nominations, the Universal Pictures’ blockbuster could make an even bigger impact.
Christopher Nolan’s historical drama about the father of the Atomic bomb leads the tally with 13, making it the 11th movie to reach such a gargantuan Oscars nomination count. Six of the previous 10 films scored best picture wins, including classics like “Gone with the Wind” (1939), “Forrest Gump” (1994), and “The Shape of Water” (2017). The four that lost are “Mary Poppins” (1964), “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1966), “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001), and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008), none of which were heavily favored to triumph in their respective years. The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards gave us our first true surprises of this year’s awards season. Since it is the first major kudos with five-nominee slots in each category, there was a number of snubs in the acting categories, one of whom was Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” in a sea of exclusions that included Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), and the trio of actors from “May December”: Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.
But fear not, they all still have hope yet for receiving recognition from the academy, particularly Hüller, who is the only performance from an international film in the bunch. She plays Sandra Voyter in Justine Triet‘s award-winning film, a woman who tries to...

“The Girl on the Train,” “A Quiet Place,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Sicario,” “Looper,” “The Young Victoria.” Those are just a select few of the many acclaimed performances delivered by Emily Blunt in her first two decades as a star. Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

In 2023, Jamie Lee Curtis reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively. But the studios decided to campaign only their co-stars,...

Shows like “Yellowjackets,” “The Rookie,” and “Naked & Afraid” all have a new home. Lionsgate has officially closed its acquisition of film and TV studio Entertainment One (eOne) from Hasbro for a sum of $375 million in cash, Lionsgate announced on December 27.
That’ll help Lionsgate beef up its own film and TV library, as the studio now has ownership of eOne’s crop of over 6,500 films and shows. Lionsgate already has one of the most impressive standalone film and TV libraries around town — one that has made it attractive for an acquisition of its own — and this deal makes it now well in excess of 20,000 titles.
On the film side, you’ve got a couple of Best Picture winners like “Green Book” and “Spotlight,” as well as some awards darlings and hits like “1917,” “The Woman King,” “The Post,” “Molly’s Game,” “The Bfg,” “The Duke,” “Arrival,” “Booksmart,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,...

Colman Domingo is having a massive year, between a leading role in historical biopic “Rustin” and a supporting part in the blockbuster musical “The Color Purple.” But just 10 years ago, the “Euphoria” star was struggling to find TV work, and recently opened up about nearly quitting the business after getting passed over for a role on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”
In a recent profile with “The New York Times,” Domingo discussed his struggles to break into onscreen acting following his Tony-nominated work in the 2011 Broadway musical “The Scottsboro Boys.” In 2014, during a week where he auditioned for eight film and TV roles, Domingo tried out for a small part as the maître d’ at a Black-owned nightclub in “Boardwalk Empire,” which was set in Atlantic City during the 1920s prohibition era. Domingo wore a tuxedo to sing and tap dance for his audition.

Colman Domingo is having a banner year thanks to acclaimed performances in “Rustin” and “The Color Purple,” the latter of which opened to a triumphant $18 million on Christmas Day. But things were considerably different for the actor back in 2014. Despite being a Tony nominee for “The Scottsboro Boys,” Domingo couldn’t get his screen acting career off the ground. He recently told The New York Times he was stuck auditioning for “under-fives,” roles that only offered him a just line or two of dialogue.
Domingo figured one of these “under-five” roles might lead to a bigger break, and the most promising of them was for a bit part on an episode of “Boardwalk Empire.” The HBO drama series was looking for an actor to play the maître d’ at a Black-owned nightclub. Domingo wore a tuxedo to the callback audition and apparently impressed producers by singing and tap dancing. He...
