Usual Madea Comical Madness
stevendbeard2 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I saw "A Madea Family Funeral", starring Tyler Perry-Vice, Alex Cross; Jen Harper-Greenleaf_tv, In The Heat of The Night_tv; Derek Morgan-Joan of Arcadia_tv, Never Been Kissed and Rome Flynn-How to Get Away With Murder_tv, The Haves and the Have Nots_tv. This is the last Madea movie that Tyler Perry is going to make. At least, that is what he has said. I guess it depends on if you like Madea movies or not-I was a big Monty Python fan, so men dressing up in women's clothes is no big deal-but they are funny and silly, at the same time. Tyler returns as Madea and other assorted characters, including a new one named Heathrow-Madea's brother-who is a Vietnam war veteran. He lost his legs, but not in Vietnam-that story involved a married woman-and he uses a voice box, presumably from his smoking. It starts out as a family reunion with a family celebration of Jen and Derek's 40th wedding anniversary and goes dark after Derek has a heart attack and dies. That's when the secrets start coming out. Rome plays their son that has just got engaged and is bringing his fiance' to the reunion turned funeral. Like I said, it's the usual Madea comical madness, with a few moral messages thrown in for good measure. There is a surprise cameo near the end and bloopers & outtakes are shown as the end credits start. It's rated "PG-13" for language, drug references and sexual content-no nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 49 minutes. It's not one that I would buy on DVD-once was enough-but it would be a good rental, if you like Madea movies.

Being the last you make, I would've thought you would go out with a bang, not a pop. And because it was his last so-called movie, I went to see it. Wish I had waited. Maybe you should too (lol). Parts of movie was indeed funny but I wish it had focused more on the funeral itself. Since, after all, that's what the movie was dealing with. Although that is typical TP. Look at your own risk tho.

Horrible
kimbok-6279310 June 2019
There was nothing funny about this movie unless the racial police exploit is funny, multiple unfaithfulness within a family and not being able to understand a lot of the dialogue is funny. If it is, label me old, senile, grouchy or just plain disgusted with this movie. Sad disappointment!

Seems written on the spot
uberdonkey626 May 2019
Difficult to believe this film had a proper script. It's a bit like on of those games where people have to use a prop and make jokes up on the spot. Like in one scene, where a guy dies, and they spend 5 minutes (that is Tyler Perry's multiple personalities of 1 dimensional characters) making naff sexual jokes.

I like Tyler Perry films in general, predictable and formulaic and 'feel good'. However, this must be his worst by far. Don't pay money for it, but if someone else is watching it and you're stoned or drunk, maybe it will pass the time as you ridicule the poor dialogue and script.

A waste of time
c-rturner9 June 2019
Worst movie I've ever seen. The acting was HORRIBLE, the plot was stupid and ridiculously unrealistic, the jokes (if you can call them that) weren't funny. I think I laughed 2 times the entire movie and it was simply because it was a "Wait, what?!!?" moment because somone said something so dumb it was actual comical. You could seriously make a drinking game out of how many times the characters said "he dead" or "my daddy died". I'm so glad this is the last of the Madea movies.

The movie was very predictable. Not very funny compared to some of his first ones. I will continue to support through Red Box though.

I usually secretly enjoy Tyler Perry...
jenniferlynn-495554 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Not this time! I know his movies aren't for everyone but I like them. There is usually a dysfunctional family secret somewhere. I even love Madea and Joe is ok. How many characters does Tyler need to play? Does he think he's Eddie Murphy? It's too much and the acting... What happened??? No one can act in this, not even him. I'm so disappointed that I can't secretly enjoy this movie. All the older characters are trying to be funny but that's it, just trying too hard. The whole movie is trying to disguise itself as a good movie. Normally, there are a few family branches, with a lot of different characters and story lines but this is too much. So many people and it feels different than the rest of his movies. I'm not a prude by any means but this movie has a lot more sexual refrences, cheesy refrences, than his other movies. I'm embarrassed for everyone in this movie, including Punk, from I love New York. Let's face it, this is what he should be embarrassed for and not for being named Punk, competing for the love of that obnoxious, foul mouthed ashtray. That's bad! The cop scene was shameful. If you're going to tackle a real issue, don't make light of it in a stupid way. You can make serious things funny but that's the key word, funny. It was ridiculously stupid. Like I said, normally, I secretly love his movies but this is worse than a made for tv movie. I rented this because I've never been let down before but I don't think I can even finish it... I'm not mad Tyler just disappointed.

A Medea Family Funeral may be Tyler Perry's last portraying this particular character
tavm1 March 2019
Now while I don't consider myself a Tyler Perry fan especially when he portrays Medea, I found myself enjoying most of this, his last time (so he says) portraying this character. He portrays her as well as her brother and now also someone named Heathrow. There's yet another family drama with the kinds of problems one could probably predict from these kinds of movies. But when the screen is on Medea and her friends, there's quite a few earned laughs. So on that note, A Medea Family Funeral is quite entertaining.

Horrible, we walked out and got our money back
brionesmark30 March 2019
It was extremely low budget, the comedy was worse than dry. It was was horrible. The characters forced their lines. I felt like it was a movie that could've been filmed in the 80's. If you are a die hard fan, enjoy! In my 49 years it's only the second movie I couldn't endure.

A hilarious farewell for Madea
gabriels-454838 March 2019
A Madea Family Funeral was full of some of the same jokes as the previous films but it kept me laughing! They should do a spin-off movie of the other characters like Joe. Great movie all around :)

LOL Funny
jrgguts-371-6299181 March 2019
At the time of this review, "A Madea Family Funeral" sits at an abysmal 3.8 out of 10. This movie is so much better that. There were so many laughs in this movie that many times myself and others were laughing out loud. Tyler Perry is hilarious as Madea, Joe and Heathrow. Is this movie going to ever be nominated for prestigious awards? No, but these movies aren't supposed to be. Movies like this, at least in my case, allow me to have a good time.

Terrible Movie
tobybriley-1816423 March 2019
This movie is bottom of the barrel for Tyler Perry hands down the worst Madea movie and possibly the worst movie ever. Vulgar, crude, tried to tackle a serious issue and miserably failed at that. Terrible police scene and this movie is nothing more than a piece of trash.

Don't waste your money like I did
socialsunshine-126455 April 2019
This was unarguably the absolute worst movie I've ever seen in theaters. Literally it was so bad, that for the first time ever I had to leave before the film was even close to being over (I left about 15 minutes in actually). The "jokes", if you can even call them that, were so terrible. They were poorly timed, poorly delivered, and overdone (like material that would have been expected about 15 years ago in a pg-13 B film that went straight to video). Actually pretty much all of the characters and situations in the film were so absolutely asinine and poorly done. Tyler Perry actually needs to stop making things, this was just so left field and obviously no real effort was put into making this film tolerable, let alone funny. If I could give this a 0 Rating I absolutely would.

Typical Tyler Perry Formula
t-ktinney28 September 2020
The people reviewing this movie with high marks are either stupid, easily entertained or Tyler Perry paid out their Walmart layaways in exchange for a great movie review. This movie was TERRIBLE! All Tyler Perry movies are pretty much the same. This one is no different but the scenes were so unbelievably dragged out and forced. The 2 female characters (forget their names) that were in nearly every scene with "Madea" are so obnoxious that I was fast forwarding through a lot of the movie. Uncle Joe's weed & ho jokes are so old and just kept going on and on and on, as did the nonsense with the guy in the wheelchair and voice box, and pretty much the entire movie. "Madea" spends a lot of the movie telling the other characters to "shut the h*** up," and slapping them which is t the least bit funny either. The whole movie felt forced, rushed and rehashed as if Tyler Perry HAD to make a quick movie for whatever reason (maybe to pay some more Walmart layaways out for strangers). Skip this movie. It's really one of the worse I've ever seen.

Rock bottom
gagerobert-293807 July 2019
The Madea movies started out funny, but over time they have just became vulgar trash. It seems to me that the Madea franchise has hit rock bottom and I have to say I'm glad it's finally coming to an end.

Torture
RoboGarrett19 June 2020
Watch this movie if you want to torture yourself. It is one of the absolute worst films I have ever seen. It's not even terrible in a way where you can at least laugh AT it, it's just plain awful with no entertainment to be had whatsoever.

One of his better movies lately
BlackCinemaNow12 March 2019
I checked out Madea's Family Funeral and it wasn't half bad. The movie is about a family who originally came together to celebrate their parent's anniversary but end up coming together for an untimely death. I felt at some scenes, I was watching one of the old Tyler Perry movies. The movie was funny & had its serious parts & a storyline that wasn't as predictable. It could have done without some of the characters and cameos who didn't bring anything significant to the movie. This is supposed to be Madea's last movie but this wasn't the way I envisioned saying farewell to his biggest role, the catalyst to his success. Madea deserves a farewell movie, in addition to the farewell play tour, that will make us miss her for years to come. I do want to mention that the police scene which was supposed to be a comedic approach to police brutality honestly made me feel a little uneasy but I see what he was trying to accomplish. Hopefully, this movie is a step back in the right direction towards movies that evoke emotion, bring laughter and in true Tyler Perry fashion, makes us think.

Madea's Wan Swan Song
zardoz-1319 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
No, the grand dame of disaster herself Mabel Simmons doesn't die in writer & director Tyler Perry's "A Madea Family Funeral," a standard-issue, morality tale that Madea enlivens with her slapstick shenanigans. Although this marks his final appearance as the unforgettable matriarch who misquotes the Bible, Perry filmed "A Madea Family Funeral" over the course of a week back in 2017. He withheld its release until his two horror comedies "Boo! Madea Halloween" and its sequel came out. Statistically speaking, Madea has appeared in eleven movies, since Perry made his cross-dressing debut in "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" (2005). Sadly, "A Madea Family Funeral" is a wan swan song. Most of its scenes are confined to comfortably furnished rooms in a two-story suburban house, with the cast babbling as if they were in a TV sit-com. The only scene outside the house features a small-town, white, Georgia policeman who stops Brian for a minor traffic infraction. Earlier, Brian had swerved his SUV recklessly in a residential neighborhood when Madea goosed him to speed up. A similar scene in "The Hate U Give" ended tragically with the accidental shooting death of a teen obsessed with his curls. Taking a totally different tack, Brian preaches "compliance" and plans to comply with the cop to defuse a potentially explosive situation. Initially, the uniformed officer is abusive. Once he runs Brian's license and registration, he brightens and behaves congenially before driving away. Happily, nobody gets shot. Nevertheless, Brian feels like the officer has somehow taken unfair advantage of him. Ironically, despite his efforts to comply, Brian changes his attitude and now wants to argue. Madea, Joe, Hattie, and Aunt Bam, who all are riding with him, warn Brian not to look a gift horse in the mouth. Not only does Perry play Madea, Brian, and Joe, but he has also created a new character, Heathrow, an obnoxious, double-amputee, Vietnam veteran who speaks with an electrolarynx, and cruises around in a motorized wheelchair.

In "A Madea Family Funeral," a couple is poised to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with family and friends is the conflict. As it turns out, the apparently virtuous husband, Anthony (Derrick Morgan of "Never Been Kissed"), has been cheating on his churchgoing wife, Vianne (Jen Harper of "Claudine's Return"), since their marriage. No matter how many times she left Anthony, Vianne returned strictly for the material welfare of her three children. Not long afterward, Madea, when Brian, Joe, Hattie, and Aunt Bam arrive for the anniversary celebration, Anthony dies in the arms of a younger woman, Renee (Quin Walters of "Barbershop 2: Back in Business"), at the same motel where Brian booked rooms for Madea and company. Later, a report indicates that an overabundance of Viagra may have caused Anthony's death! Recognizing Anthony's oldest son, A.J. (Courtney Burrell of "Blackhats"), in the hall outside the room, Brian, Madea, Joe, Hattie and Aunt Bam enter and spot Anthony sprawled in bed, decked out sexual bondage gear, with a distraught Renee hovering nearby half-dressed. Not surprisingly, A.J. has inherited his father's lying, cheating ways because he is having an extramarital fling with Gia (Aeriel Miranda of "Straight Outta Compton"), and she is his younger brother's fiancée. After Anthony dies in the hospital, Vianne places Madea in charge of her dysfunctional family quandary. No way is Vianne prepared to let her contentious children conduct Anthony's last rites. Furthermore, Vianne gives Madea permission to supervise the funeral ceremony. During the memorial service, more than half of the ladies attending are none other than Anthony's former lovers. Before the funeral service commences, Madea learns about a bizarre problem looming over Anthony's funeral. The Undertaker (Aryeh-Or of "J. Edgar") explains that he could not permanently secure the casket lid over Anthony's lower half, because the Viagra had lost none of its potency. When the Undertaker tried to slam the lower lid shut, Anthony's invigorated remains rammed against it, and the lower lid flew open. Writer & director Tyler Perry milks this audacious comic gag for laughs galore.

Predictably, the funeral is the highlight of this frivolous Madea escapade. Our histrionic heroine shows up, dressed from head to toe in black, with a preposterously tall hat that makes her resemble a Quaker. Madea imposes a rigid, two-minute time limit on everybody who steps up to the podium. Nevertheless, she struggles desperately without success to cut down on the length of time while the funeral continues with no end in sight. Everybody either talks or sings for far more than two minutes, and director Tyler Perry spins the hands on a clock comically to show that the funeral last eight hours! Afterward, when Madea isn't counseling the family, she discourages Brian, Joe, Hattie, and Aunt Bam from divulging any sordid details about Anthony's demise. By far, the funeral qualifies as the funniest scene, with lots of songs, dances, prayers, and the thumping casket lid.

The chief problem with "A Madea Family Funeral" is the scenes about Anthony's family are humdrum compared to the sidesplitting scenes with Madea and her scatter-brained posse. Aunt Bam and Hattie are as goofy as ever. Hattie (Patrice Lovely of "Boo! A Madea Halloween") is particularly facetious when she leaps on Anthony's body in the motel room. Madea ridicules Bam (Cassi Davis of "School Daze") about her bladder control issues after they hit the road for a 3-hour trip to Anthony & Vianne's anniversary. When Madea isn't amusing us with her witticisms, "A Madea Family Funeral" resembles a straightforward "Lifetime" soap opera. Perry is once again a laugh riot in drag as well as out when he plays Madea's straight-arrow son Brian and her two woebegone brothers, lewd Joe and rude Heathrow. Perry's gallery of characters provides "A Madea Family Funeral" with its best laughs. Clocking in at 110 minutes, "A Madea Family Funeral" delivers more than enough laughs to justify the experience of watching the final installment of the "Madea" franchise on the big-screen.

The outtakes were better than the movie
dylpickle_sch558 September 2019
I am not one to listen to bad reviews, I loved Boo! A Madea Halloween. But this movie was horrible, the storyline seemed rushed, its was more of a drama than a comedy, most of the scenes, the actors acted like it was forced. And the problems that the family were facing were only exposed, not necessarily fixed, so it left an open ending. You can tell this was finished in a week.
