Bollywood A-list actor Ayushmann Khurrana scored another major hit in 2023 with comedy sequel “Dream Girl 2.” But he is still happy to have achieved what he describes as “validation.”
The film was one of several medium budget Hindi-language films that became box office successes, including “Omg 2,” “Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway,” “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke,” “Satyaprem Ki Katha” and “12th Fail.” These effectively debunked the notion that only big budget spectacles like “Pathaan” or “Jawan” would work at the post-pandemic Bollywood box office, which had a poor 2022.
“There was a conspiracy theory, maybe a year back, that Indian audiences [were] only looking for spectacles or larger-than-life films, but this year, a lot of films, which not really big budget but mid budget, did really well,” Khurrana told Variety. ”Dream Girl 2′ did well, so did ‘Omg 2,’ and ‘Gadar 2’ was technically also a mid budget film. That norm has been broken,...

April 20, 2022 marks exactly a decade since Ayushmann Khurrana, Bollywood’s most successful thematic risk taking actor, debuted in the film industry.
Ten years ago today is when Khurrana debuted with “Vicky Donor,” in which he played a sperm donor. Starting from then, he has made a point of playing diverse characters, and each of them have been box-office successes.
These include playing a man who suffers from erectile dysfunction in “Shubh Mangal Savdhan” (2017); an alopecia sufferer in “Bala” (2019); an out and proud gay man in “Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan” (2020) and a macho gym instructor who finds out that his fiancée used to be a man and has undergone gender reassignment surgery in “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui” (2021).
While these roles obviously fly in the face of traditional Bollywood macho stereotypes, Khurrana’s other role choices have also been unusual by the industry’s mainstream standards. These include playing a piano player who...

Spoiler Alert for those who have not seen the film “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui.”
Bollywood A-lister Ayushmann Khurrana headlines the cast of transgender-themed romance “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui,” which is currently on release worldwide.
Across Indian cinema as a whole, trans characters have been portrayed sensitively as leads of films like “Daayra” (1996) “Tamanna” (1998), “Just Another Love Story” (2010), “Nanu Avanalla Avalu” (2015), “Njan Marykutty” (2018) and “Super Deluxe” (2019). However their representation in mainstream commercial Bollywood cinema veers between villainous characters, like Sadashiv Amrapurkar’s Maharani in “Sadak” (1991), and crude comedy parts. “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui” is unique in that it brings a trans character to the fore in Bollywood.
Khurrana plays Manvinder Munjal, a macho gym instructor in the northern Indian city of Chandigarh, who is smitten with Maanvi Brar, a Zumba teacher who shares his work space. They consummate their relationship and decide to get married when Maanvi reveals that she used to be a...

14th February may be Valentine’s day around the world; a day for love to spring forth, but for Bollywood it’s time for the annual love movie. Last year Sonam Kapoor Ahuja took this love in a new and unknown direction portraying lesbian love in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga. 2020 has brought Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, which releases the 21st, a film celebrating gay love in a way that it never has been before. Of course, the lead role is being taken on by Ayushmann Khurrana, who never seems to shy away from difficult, controversial or out-there roles and so the film takes on the name of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan: a sort of follow up from Shubh Mangal Saavdhan from 2017. A great combination of stars come together for this film but to concentrate on the story the album has only 3 short songs which are all handled by Taniskh Bagchi,...

"We usually show our women as very demure and submissive but I think over the last few years, with the work my colleagues and I are putting in, or the kind of initiatives that are being started and the kind of conversation that has started, things are changing," said Bhumi at the launch of "MTV Nishedh" on Friday in Mumbai.
"MTV Nishedh" will focus on fostering healthier attitudes and behaviours, and removing the stigma surrounding several health-related issues, including sexual reproductive health and wellbeing, contraceptive care, tuberculosis (TB) and nutrition. The series aims to educate the audience on these subjects, and to get young people talking and seeking out more information about such important but often-neglected and overlooked issues.

National Award-winning Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who went through a look transformation in his upcoming film "Bala", says he looked just like his grandfather after the prosthetic makeup was done.
Talking about how drastically different he looked after the makeup, Ayushmann said: "It was a different person altogether, and I did not recognise myself. I thought I looked like my grandfather because he had scanty hair. But I could relate with the reason why there is the complex (among people who are suffering premature balding). My father is quite gifted that way. He will turn 70 next year and he still has full hair. But my grandfather had the issue, I remember. So I empathise with them. Having said that, during the shoot, the toughest part was the prosthetic."
