There but for the grace of God. . .
I don't know why this version is so hard to find on IMDB? It is the one I have seen most on SkyArts for the past three years and it has become part of my family tradition now.
I hadn't really been a ballet fan until I watched this performance, but every time I see it, I am inspired more and more to learn it myself. If only my Mother had bought me Tights as a child instead of a Football Kit? I wouldn't be a 40 year old hoping to find a class that would take me in order to become as fit and beautiful as the people in this production. Alexander Campbell (The Nutcracker) for example, has thighs that could actually crack nuts, they are mesmerising and some of the other fellas have legs that go right up to their bums. A handsome bunch to be sure. They are of course accompanied by some very pretty ladies who bend into shapes that exhaust me just to look at them. Where do they all find their energy, I can barely find the strength to get out of bed? (It's 13:00 and I'm still here eating cake)
The beginning of the story is a bit slow, with all the Christmas party exploits and I found myself growing impatient for the Nutcracker to appear and for Tchaikovsky's beautiful music to really kick in with the tracks I know from 'Home Alone' and the Fruit & Nut advert and so on. It wasn't a tiresome wait though, as the dancers were all adorned in beautiful costumes and on a set so magnificent you couldn't help but be entertained. I'd give my left nut to perform on a stage and with a set like that as of course with the talented bunch that fill it.
If I had to give one major criticism, it would be that the camera tended to focus on what it wanted to see and I felt that I was losing out on some of the other interesting things happening around the lead performers. I like to view the ensemble as much as the main cast. This is a problem I often find when these shows are recorded for the Cinema or DVD.
Beautifully performed by all involved, including and especially the orchestra, I just wish I understood the story a bit more, maybe if I watch the Disney/Barbie version?
