Khushalii Kumar soars but Starfish drowns...
nadkarnisumeet27 November 2023
Starfish review :

Based on Bina Nayak's book Starfish Pickle, this two hours long movie turns out to be a royal bore. Beware guys as it can genuinely lull even insomniacs in to a deep snore...sorry to say but Starfish goes astray despite quite a few positives up its sleeve.

Like the exotic locales of Malta and Sicily (Italy) which are beautifully captured here! The underwater sequences are also wonderfully shot which reminded me of one more Bollywood biggie called Blue (2009). Unfortunately just like Blue, Starfish rests on a wafer thin plot which just doesn't go anywhere. After all, how many times can you watch the voluptuous Khushalii Kumar drinking like a fish, doing drugs and partying hard like there's no tomorrow. Glug glug!!

Khushalii Kumar was impressive in last years Dhokha Round D Corner and in Starfish too, she displays adequate acting chops coupled with her abundant sex appeal quite effectively. Kudos to that!!

I was actually expecting some hot chemistry between the macho Milind Soman and Khushalii but just as they come close to kiss, the director shifts focus away from them. Oooff, that's sacrilege!! As for those two (supposed) hunky heroes who get lucky with the leading lady, the less said the better!!

To sum up, Khushalii soars but Starfish drowns...

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

A bland emotional movie with poor acting
screusser27 January 2024
Don't get carried away with high ratings. They come mostly from Indian users. We could call it something like the "Indian public lobby", again generating false expectations.

Almost all of them rate this movie with 10 points, do they really think it is on a par with Titanic, The Revenant or Forrest Gump?

That aside, Starfish has a noble intention in the message of its story. The protagonist is a beautiful diving professional who seems to have the world at her feet because of her beauty, but deep down she carries a huge emotional and psychological backpack. As a result, Starfish does a good job of showing this protagonist's weaknesses and more emotional downfalls, as she goes on an increasingly desperate quest to heal herself and her past.

Now for the bad. Overall, all the performances. Always over the top, exaggerated, not in keeping with the deep existential drama that the script wants to tell. Sometimes, the mix with comedy and music only serves to numb the senses and increase the disinterest in the main story.

And the link with the depth of the ocean and the underwater world only serves as a barely cosmetic context.

The quick happy ending ends up being, in reality, a sad and abrupt consolation for the viewer who resisted the almost 2 and a half hours of an afternoon soap opera turned into a movie.

Don't waste your time

A parfum advertisement has more coherence that this film. It is like "mexican soap opera meets Bollywood". Countless continuity errors, stereotypical music, poor performances, in a display of exuberance and lavish locations. On the bright side, it can serve very well as a travel advertisement of Malta and southern Italy. If you are the type of person that can't sleep without some white noise or something in the background, this movie is perfect for you. Otherwise, don't bother.

As I have nothing else to say about this movie, I will write this final sentence to fill the gap in this review. Bye.

Waste of Money & Time
erlaraib24 November 2023
I had to leave the movie in interval, I couldn't tolerate such a mess.

The Starfish movie, despite its ambitious premise, ultimately falls short of expectations on multiple fronts, leaving the viewer with a sense of dissatisfaction and missed potential.

One of the major drawbacks of the film lies in its narrative execution. The plot, which initially promised a unique and intriguing storyline, quickly devolves into a convoluted mess. The filmmakers seemed to prioritize style over substance, resulting in a confusing narrative that leaves the audience struggling to piece together the disjointed events. The lack of a cohesive and well-developed storyline undermines the entire viewing experience, leaving viewers disoriented and detached from the characters' journeys.

Character development is another notable weak point in Starfish. The film introduces a cast of characters with the potential for depth and complexity, yet their arcs remain underexplored and unconvincing. Viewers are left with one-dimensional characters who fail to evoke empathy or investment. The protagonist's motivations and internal struggles are particularly poorly conveyed, making it challenging for the audience to connect with or care about the central figure's fate. The film misses an opportunity to create a meaningful emotional impact, as the characters lack the depth needed to resonate with the audience on a personal level.

Pacing issues further exacerbate the film's problems. Starfish suffers from inconsistent pacing that oscillates between sluggish and frenetic, making it difficult for viewers to fully immerse themselves in the unfolding events. The abrupt shifts in tempo disrupt the narrative flow, hindering the establishment of a cohesive and engaging viewing experience. This lack of pacing cohesion results in a film that feels disjointed and haphazardly put together, preventing any sustained tension or emotional resonance.

Special effects, a crucial aspect of any modern sci-fi film, fail to impress in Starfish. The visual elements intended to bring the fantastical elements of the story to life appear lackluster and dated. In an era where audiences have come to expect cutting-edge CGI and immersive visual experiences, Starfish falls behind, relying on subpar effects that diminish the overall quality of the film. The lack of attention to detail in the visual presentation serves as a constant reminder of the film's budgetary constraints, detracting from the audience's ability to fully immerse themselves in the fictional world.

The film's soundtrack, rather than enhancing the viewing experience, proves to be a distraction. The music, seemingly discordant with the film's tone, fails to complement the on-screen action or evoke the desired emotional responses. Instead of contributing to a cohesive atmosphere, the soundtrack often feels like an afterthought, further highlighting the film's lack of attention to detail in crucial areas.

One of the film's most significant failings is its inability to deliver a satisfying resolution. The climax feels rushed and unsatisfying, leaving numerous unanswered questions and loose ends. Viewers are left feeling unfulfilled and wondering if there were aspects of the story that were overlooked or simply left unexplained. A well-executed resolution is essential for providing closure and leaving a lasting impression, and in this regard, Starfish falls disappointingly short.

In conclusion, Starfish, despite its initial promise, ultimately disappoints on multiple fronts. From a convoluted and poorly executed narrative to underdeveloped characters, inconsistent pacing, lackluster special effects, and an unsatisfying resolution, the film fails to deliver a compelling and engaging sci-fi experience. While ambitious in its concept, the execution leaves much to be desired, resulting in a cinematic endeavor that struggles to leave a lasting impact on its audience.

Waste of time
snehjyot22 January 2024
Pathetic acting and story line. No idea why this movie has a rating of 8.3. Based on thought of watching the movie, but please do not waste your time, even if you have ample to waste.

I was waiting throughout the movie, to have a twist and turn or something that's worth a good rating. But I was disappointed to the core.

I was fed up to see the actress giving up at every possible situation. Everytime the actress dives to save someone, ends up someone else saving her.

The lady simply gets married and has kid, even after being so messed up.

It is not a emotional or romantic movie. It is just a irritating movie.

A journey worth taking....
shrivastavrashmi-0837424 November 2023
"Starfish" is a cinematic marvel that immerses audiences in a mesmerizing underwater world skillfully crafted by director Akhilesh Jaiswal. The film's intricate world-building and breathtaking underwater scenes showcase a diver's life navigating the depths while working for a dredging company. Kushali Kumar's remarkable portrayal of Tara Salgoankar, grappling with her past through panic attacks, is a testament to her tremendous acting prowess.

The screenplay weaves a compelling narrative as Tara embarks on a journey to unravel the mysteries surrounding her mother's sudden demise, featuring twists and turns that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Tushar Khanna, portraying the righteous navy officer Aman, adds stability and chemistry alongside Kumar, while Ehan Bhatt's carefree soul, Neil, leaves a lasting impact with charm and wit. Milind Soman, as Arlo, becomes the needle that threads the story to its epiphanic end.

Akhilesh Jaiswal's direction brings Bina Nayak's "Starfish Pickle" vividly to life with action shots that redefine Indian cinema. The music, from "Fanaa kat lo" to "Kudiye ni," sets a perfect tone for the film. In totality, "Starfish" is a beautifully written and well-directed masterpiece, featuring relatable characters unafraid to make mistakes on their journey to finding their place in life. This cinematic experience is truly a journey worth taking, earning "Starfish" a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars.

Starfish: A Cinematic Dive Hindered by Choppy Waters, Fails to Make a Splash and Proves a Disappointing Waste of Time
krishnakundu9520 January 2024
Starfish," directed by Akhilesh Jaiswal and adapted from Bina Nayak's novel "Starfish Pickle," embarks on a narrative journey that, unfortunately, encounters turbulent waters. The film introduces us to Tara, portrayed by Khushalii Kumar, a diver entangled in the undertow of her past. Despite a promising start, the cinematic voyage is hindered by a choppy narrative, impulsive editing, and a screenplay that lacks finesse.

The initial chapters offer a glimpse into Tara's world, but impulsive edits disrupt the flow, hindering the audience's immersion. The film grapples with a momentary dip in engagement, struggling against a cinematic tide that refuses to be tamed. While Jim Edgar's cinematography captures stunning underwater scenes, it becomes a victim of the film's impulsive editing, overshadowing its potential impact.

Set against the enchanting backdrop of Malta, Tara's life as a diver and her struggle with PTSD are hindered by a screenplay that meanders lazily through thematic depths. Conflicts between moving on and confronting past wounds feel diluted, failing to leave a lasting impact. Relationships with Aman (Tushar Khanna) and Neel (Ehan Bhat) suffer from predictability, lacking the emotional depth intended.

Despite Khushalii Kumar's commendable performance, the film struggles to rise above its challenges. The attempt to deliver a compelling exploration of human emotions is marred by a choppy narrative and a screenplay that misses opportunities. While Jim Edgar's cinematography shines, it becomes a victim of the film's lack of cohesion.

In conclusion, "Starfish" falters in its attempt to provide a seamless and immersive cinematic experience. The film's untamed currents, represented by its choppy narrative and impulsive editing, may leave audiences grappling with cinematic confusion. Unfortunately, the lack of interest-inducing elements categorizes "Starfish" as a waste of time, failing to make the overall viewing experience compelling or worthwhile.

Beautiful Film
thesunilbohra24 November 2023
Lovely Film, well shot , very good performances.

Well produced.

Special mention to Jim Edgar , the DOP of the film and the team that shot underwater. The underwater action sequences are a delight to watch.

Music is wow and all songs are super and picturized so well. Arijit is soulful as always.

Malta is such a beautiful country.

Milind Soman like always looks too good.

Khushhali Kumar dives deep into her character and plays a complex character with ease.

Both the heroes Ehan Bhatt & Tushar Khanna are commendable.

In all it's a gripping film with lots of twists & turns in the plot A must watch film !

How does this movie get 6.9/10
ndav-0487629 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Its such a boring, depressing movie. The lead Kushalii Kumar, is such a depressing, zero energy actress. I understand that the character has mental issues because of a parent's death but come on. In a young woman's life that dates guys, will have some moments of energy. If this is some idea of entertainment, it's not for me. Of all the things she is a diver trying to save lives and gets reminded of her dead mother few thousand feet under water and gets panic attacks. Just a boring story with a depressing screenplay. The lications in Malta were simply beautiful. Other than that there was really not much else in the movie.

Delightful
guptaji-79924 November 2023
The complicated but emotional storyline of Starfish comes full circle with an unexpected yet cathartic twist.

Khushhali leads this amazing cast with a very nuanced performance.

The first time underwater sequences were jaw-dropping and enthralling.

Director Akhilesh Jaiswal's hold of his story and the character are praiseworthy. His shot taking and cinematic eye is allover the film. The underwater sequences have a thrill to them. And Malta has never looked more beautiful.

The music of the film is soulful, eye-catching yet forwards the story. Hearing Fannah karlo in the theatres was a surreal experience.

Such a bad film I have never seen in my entire life!
supreethshetty00722 January 2024
Waste of resources and waste of time. If you have so much money, kindly give it to me. I'll make a better film than this. It's a migraine. No story, no talent with 10% potential. The director has made a mess. It looks like they've gone on a holiday and made this film. Watch if you want to waste your time. T-Series has produced this film, and there's not even one good song in the entire movie. At least for your family members (Khushhali Kumar), kindly make a good film and get a good composer next time. Khushhali Kumar's acting is very bad. Limited star cast, and they all are bad. It looks like black money; they wanted to turn it white, so they made this garbage called "Starfish."

Ah! A 'No' from my side!
sansysharma24 January 2024
Kept on waiting for something good, substantial and worthwhile but in vain ... Movie falls apart in every field...very bad direction, it could have been a good film but they didn't know how to present the storyline! The heroine is beautiful, boys are handsome but they are there just for being eye candies. I don't know who all have given it a good rating. It is definitely a disturbing film that will leave you thinking what went wrong. Half cooked plot, half cooked characters , half cooked everything resulted in an overall bad dish! Cinematography was nice, beautiful places n location but that's all, you will still wonder why heroine's professional was of a diver! It had nothing to do with the story except that it was something different that's all. Don't expect too much, save your time to watch something else...

Don't waste your time. Have no idea how it got a rating of 8+ Messy plot, poor performance by the actress, can't relate to any characters and just pathetic overall. I think this is the worst movie that I watched on Netflix in a while.

It was honestly intolerable. I watched it at 1.5x and was still so bored. The only good thing in the entire film were the locations and the star cast looked beautiful and that's it. But overall it does't serves any purpose. I got no message overall from the movie. If I have to sum up, the movie did have a huge potential in the start but it fell short in every aspect.

"Starfish" is a riveting dive into the tumultuous waters of a professional diver's life, skillfully directed and masterfully performed by an outstanding cast. The film not only explores the depths of the ocean but also delves into the complexities of the protagonist's past, creating a cinematic experience that is both visually stunning and emotionally gripping.

Khushali Kumar delivers exceptional performances that breathe life into her character Tara and portrays the professional diver with a perfect balance of strength and vulnerability.

The cinematography deserves special mention, capturing the play of light and shadow beneath the water's surface. The use of underwater cameras provides a unique perspective, making the audience feel like silent observers in the vast, mysterious world of the ocean.

0 Stars, complete waste of time.
bibin07923 January 2024
Please don't watch this movie. All reviews here are fake and paid. Didn't watch such horrible content in years.

Despite the potential for an engaging cinematic journey, Starfish fails to capitalize on any meaningful moments. The storyline feels like a patchwork of disconnected scenes that struggle to form a cohesive narrative. It's a disheartening realization for viewers expecting a well-crafted and immersive movie experience.

In conclusion, Starfish is a regrettable addition to the world of Hindi cinema. With a convoluted plot, lackluster performances, and inadequate execution, it fails to leave a lasting impression. Save your precious time and explore other cinematic offerings that truly deliver on the promise of an enriching and enjoyable movie experience.

Movie was made by a bunch of armatures.
alinazaidi-2508522 January 2024
There were multiple scenes which randomly occurred on the screen as if the movie has missing parts in it. Actor randomly gets wet and start talking to eachother as if the star was drowning and he saved her. But no such scene was shown.

The only person who could act was aman. Khushi's acting was really bad. Failed to connect even at the most emotional scenes.

Direction of the film was sub par at best.

Story lacked logic so much that it made my head hurt.

Timeline of the movie was so messed up you won't be able to guess which day it is or how many days have passed or what's in future what's in past.

There were so many loose ends in the movie and the climax was also not a climax but just a weird end the the movie.

What a mess!!!

Starfish: A Captivating Cinematic Journey of Healing and Discovery
rohinkvarghese-455-13897124 November 2023
"Starfish" is a visually stunning masterpiece that beautifully captures the essence of healing from past traumas. Khushalii Kumar portrays Tara, a diver finding solace in the sea, brilliantly. The film skillfully intertwines her journey of self-discovery with breathtaking visuals and captivating locales. Milind Soman's presence adds depth, complementing Khushalii's portrayal. Although it hints at brooding emotions, the movie would have benefitted from more lively moments. Despite this, the film shines with its picturesque frames and the deeply emotive performances, making it a must-watch.

"Starfish" is a poignant expedition into the human spirit, a visual and emotional tour de force that deserves accolades for its compelling narrative and evocative storytelling.

This story is griping till the end and keeps you on the edge wondering how it will move ahead, leaving you always thinking but always surprises. It's beautiful shot both on land and underwater. Infact the underwater scenes are very breathtaking and one of its fist kind for Indian cinema.

All the actors especially the new talent have performed and done full justice to thief respective characters with little details true to their characters.

Considering it a relatively new production, it all has been been beautifully put together. This sure will mark the beginning of new take subjects for Indian cinema.
