Nearly 25 years after Ion's protest against the communist regime, the entire Bugan family decided to travel back to Romania to better understand their past life through the eye of the Securitate. Ion Bugan left in the middle of a night, on March 1983, from his village in eastern Romania to Bucharest, the capital city. After 200 km, he parked his personal car. In the trunk he had hidden placards that he had painted and stuck black ribbons of mourning. "Down with the Ceausescu Dynasty!", "Justice and Police, what are you defending: Ceausescu Dynasty or Human Beings?". Ion fixed the placards on his car and drove to the city center. But his protest did not last long. Predictably, a few meters away, Ion was arrested. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. From that moment on, Ion's wife and children have been placed under the watchful eye of the Securitate until they fled to the U.S.
