Dutch rising star Johnny de Graaff is ready to shine in Bologna after his long injury rehab, but team boss De Livretti keeps him benched as part of a lucrative sale back to Holland deal offered by Mirko de Kroon. So Johnny's visiting father Ton de Graaff smells a rat, doting son Sven gets snapped at and wife Renate shortly kidnapped by his shady nightclub debt collectors. Meanwhile wheeler-dealer Floris Hulsscher runs from threats to his sister Gwen at the Dutch embassy in Bangkok.

Johnny gets a hero welcome in home town team FC Deventer, except from ambitious Carlo Lebens. Even his marriage gets back on track, but he's desperate for a lucrative Russian transfer to Wassily Trostanow's Kazan trough agent Mirko de Kroon to settle his financial needs. He plays on and scores decisively while his father Ton is hospitalized with a cardiac crisis, but pulls trough. Gwen trails late brother Floris's secret life back to his business partner Robin Bruyn, who is stunned by his murder and isn't cooperative.

Johnny drives agent Mirko to despair by reneging on the transfer to Kazan because his wife refuses to move, he even takes an option on a Deventer home. He also refuses cash for a second 'match fix', but mobster Wassily Trostanow subtly threatens his recovering father Ton. Desperate, he plots to earn enough for a 'new start abroad' by gambling on himself via publican mate Hans Dichter. After consulting Warre Mertens's widow Denise's suspicions, Gen gets Robin to admit they and Floris were involved in a secret website allowing (fixed) players to gamble on their on matches for a commission, which the mob investors found out about and has goons murder Warre for. Hoping to find the trail trough a player, they guess rightly from stakes De Graaff is one, but the watchful mob strikes explosively.
