Good idea, terrible execution.
wwejournalist18 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Some films are bad because they are written poorly, or they don't make sense, some because the camera work is bad, others because the acting isn't up to much.

This has a bit of everything but the biggest problem is Tommy Nash.

There's definitely a reason his acting career never took off, and this film exemplifies that.

He shouts when he should be calm, he feels off lines like he's literally looking at the script, he just isn't convincing at all, all while Omar Gooding acts his ass off for no reward.

There's a part in the film where they make fun of one of the Escape Room actors for not being good, but she's way better than Nash.

Speaking of Escape Rooms (the supposed premise of the film) there isn't actually that much to do with them. It's a weak plot point, so if you're looking for something like 2019's FAR superior 'Escape Room' then you'll be massively disappointed.

The end of the film throws 'big twist' after big twist at the viewer, and aside from one they are so easy to telegraph it's difficult to accept they planned on them being twists at all, but the way each is revealed makes it clear that was the intent.

The biggest mystery the film presents is how the lead character (Nash's Matthew Blake) goes from being a blonde haired, scrawny teen to a Jesus-lookalike, rippling with muscles.

There are the odd moments of attempted comedy which largely fall flat, the music is dreadful (the 'aftermath' scene for example has a loop of music that sounds like it came from Diagnosis Murder or Monk) and of course there are gratuitous sex scenes thrown in for good measure.

The annoying thing is the story was quite clever, it was just so poorly executed and acted I can't possibly recommend watching it.

Dreadful Beyond Bad
omendata20 August 2020
This is one of those films that has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever from a terrible story, poor acting, bad camerawork, no thrills and dreadful editing; It should never have been made it really is that cringeworthy!

It was so bad I nearly fell asleep and that is a rare thing so avoid this one at all costs or you really will waste an hour and a half of your precious time, watching a slow puncture is more interesting than this bucket of nonsense!

Well, there is some idea of a movie here.
jmbovan-47-1601737 December 2020
Overall, this is a rather tepid attempt at an escape room film as it is coupled with some revenge plot (that isn't too difficult to decipher). But, otherwise it has several annoying and unlikeable characters so I guess it is trying to set up a satisfying end of the film. Boy, it doesn't do it very well.

Movie was decent. Lead was horrible.
gemini-746847 September 2020
This was a good movie with decent premise. 30 minutes in I almost wanted to turn the movie off. Not cause of the movie, but the lead actor is deplorable. Horrible acting and trying WAY too hard. If he wasn't the lead I would've given the 6/10 stars

It was OK
amanda-616-90177230 August 2020
I'm not a fan of scary movies. But this was ok. Not the best script or acting with the exception of the actress who plays Brittany - she was alright. I think if you follow the breadcrumbs left you could work out the ending. Entertaining in its own way.

What A Dumpster Fire.....
wandernn1-81-6832741 January 2021
Okay this movie began okay with an interesting premise. But in the middle it decayed into one ridiculous nonsensical crud fest. I couldn't take anymore and turned it off with 14 minutes left. Horrible. 1/10

Going against the grain but I loved it.

Unsure why so many bad reviews. It wasn't bad. Bats well above it's current rating of 3.3.

I think a few reviewers missed the nuances in the early stages of the film.

You knew who he was but there were still a couple of twists at the end.

Watched it again to pick up the clues I missed first time around.

Escape Puzzle Of Fear

Warning: Spoilers
I liked the plot. I had already figured out 15 minutes in the movie the girlfriend was the little girl from the past. It was entertaining for a straight to TV movie. 5/10.

This movie surprised me, I wasn't expecting it to be entertaining. Sure, it could have been done better, Tommy Nash was creepy. Worth a watch.

Really??? This is someone's idea of a good movie??
gsosings6 January 2021
I don't want to spend too much time writing this review... I've already wasted enough time watching this trash! Not the worst movie in the world, but really not good. The high school script, the convoluted plot, the amateurish acting.. nope, no redeeming value here at all. Find something - anything - to do rather than waste time with this garbage

Payback.

I enjoyed this movie, hated the lead from the beginning. Was hoping they tortured him to death. One thing I noticed is that he over acts. Put him between two pieces of bread and you'd have a really bad ham sandwich.

No one touches my daughter unless it's me!

Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with some folks escaping from a room in a subplot. The main focus is on Britney (Aubrey Reynolds) the world's greatest girlfriend. She had a traumatic experience as a child when her sister died in an accident. Her boyfriend Matt (Tommy Nash( clearly does not appreciate her. They decide to go on a double date with Ty (Omar Gooding) and Angela (Naina Michaud ) to an escape room.

I liked how the film ties everything together, something I caught about 50 minutes into the feature. It was better written than executed. The acting/dialogue/direction was missing the element of memorable scenes making this just one of many escape room movies.

Guide: F-word. sex. Nudity (Naina Michaud)

So? Thriller or soft core porn?
bobgray-315 December 2020
The movie was pretty decent. The lead actor was horrible. probably would have been better if I had cast somebody else. The first 20 minutes of the movie could have been softcore p***. I guess just thrown into kill time. But it didn't really work. When you expect a thriller. The lead actor, Tommy Nash, overacted so badly that I was just laughing at him. I guess maybe a different director could have done a better movie with this script which wasn't really too bad. Are they probably could have just recast the whole show.

Bad writing, bad acting, bad plot, bad, bad, bad...
alex-harris-love23 November 2022
This movie was bad. Why did I give it two stars instead of one star? One star for each of the main female protagonists doing nude scenes. Outside of that, there is nothing to gain from watching this movie. I understand what the screenwriters were going for but they failed miserably. The way the flashback sequences take place leave the viewer very confused and the acting is downright comical. The plot itself had promise but was nothing but a huge letdown. The ending was stupid in itself as it is very predictable (you'll guess it within the first five minutes) and the storyline must follow the dumbest crew of people as you will be bewildered wondering how they could not see it all coming. It is a long story of revenge being a dish best served cold but the revenge served in this film is nothing short of a frozen steak you'll need to put on your head after watching this because of the headache it will give you. No replay value, no memorable quotes or scenes, and you'll be ashamed to see Omar Gooding in this movie after he had such a decent career filled with potential to where it will make you wonder how much he was paid for his role in this film.

Very bad...
nightbutterfly6924 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why does the lead man seem to think every woman must want him? He's just a jerk, and I just wanted him to die the entire time. The writing was lame, and the movie didn't make a lot of sense.

More garbage that thinks the murder of children is 'edgy.' I'd be fine with the arrest of every adult involved in this snuff garbage. It's trash, junk, shtt. Burn it.

I wasn't expecting much, and it was worse than that
theagoliddell31 January 2024
I wasn't expecting much, and it was worse than that... amateurish acting and continuity flaws that a child could fix... unless you're stuck with a TV and just this movie, it's not worth watching... I wish I had stopped at the beginning of the film

The scene in which there is a final confrontation between the villain and the heroine is so childish that I'm sure the actors were embarrassed to see the result, all the characters in the film seem to have the same information as the director, there is no depth in the scenes. Characters and there is a feeling of discomfort caused by the poor dialogue that takes you out of the immersion all the time, if it were a film released 30 years ago, it would still be a very bad film in production and acting.

EScape: Movie of suckage
zombie-response-squad16 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In the late 90s, a Canadian film called Cube started the "escape room" genre. The Saw movies followed in its footsteps. Then, in 2017, a film called 'Escape room' was released to mixed reviews worldwide. It's a shame because it was actually quite good. It inspired a sequel in 2021 and a mockbuster in 2020.

Escape: Puzzle of fear is a woebegotten cinematic car crash of a film. It's like a bus full of movie industry professionals got into a horrific accident, and some unskilled intern was left to stich the remains together. The resulting abomination then made the movie single handed. In one take. While on crack.

I try not to spoil movies in these reviews. Please don't consider the following review to be spoiler laden, you can only spoil things that are good. This isn't a review, it isn't even a post mortem. (You don't need a doctor to tell you the corpse with it's heart ripped out didn't die of the Ecchymosis on its hallux.) This is a wake.

We join a massive jerk Matthew Blake, he is a controlling abuser who works as some kind of big deal agent. Matthew is a terrible person. He abuses his partner and bullies others. Spoiler alert: he caused a young girl's death and made another person go to an institution. Matthew and his friend (and partner in the awful crimes alluded to above) decide to go to an escape room on a double date, pretty much things go downhill from there; the escape room soon proves to be weaved with details of his real life crime, and SURPRISE! Mathews girlfriend is the survivor from the murder he committed.

I will say that the production company pulled a bit of a shell game by calling themselves 'Thriller films', because if you try and google them you get dozen of pages about genuinely good movies. It's like some two bit convenance store calling themselves 'Best food and wine' when all they sell is off brand junk, out of date Doritos and wine that is best employed as drain cleaner.

The movie lurches drunkenly from one scene to another with no regard for narrative logic or the viewers comfort, the film has more gratuitous flash backs than an episode of Lost and the big twist is signposted more clearly than your average motorway.

It doesn't help that three of the four principle characters are as likeable as a stinging nettle in the urethra, there is the aforementioned, child murdering coercive controller; his wing man who may as well have presented his balls to him in a ring box and his girlfriend who used to date the douche and still craves that creepy meat puppet

Your never under the impression that Blake is anything but a complete scum bag and because of the sloppy editing and lack of craft on display you end up not caring when the 'big reveal' happens and it turns out that he and Omar Gooding's character (Tyler) were responsible for the death of Brittney's (Aubrey Reynolds) little sister who has plotted this whole thing with her loony bin friends.

Tl:dr: Noooooooo! Don't do it! You'll never get that time or those brain cells back.

Do not bother
dierkingl13 October 2023
Wow....another movie with no name actors, scenes that seem random and bad acting. It started off great, but then it went off in 3 different directions. I did only watch 20 mins of a 1hr 20 min film. At that point I turned it off they were not even at the escape room. Don't get what the crazy kid had to do with anything or the obvious domineering male lead over a immature girl who follow orders. I had to laugh with the "sex scene" at the beginning. Um, you are under the sheets taking it all in, but there is no movement, just a shot of the guy pretending to enjoy.... Sorry, I thought it was comical. Ok, then you got some pyscho women with a demented boss with drugs. Not sure how it all ended since I didnt' bother. So the first 20 minutes or 1/4 of the movie makes no sense. I feel bad for those who braved it out and watched to the end.

The script is the problem
lora-jen12 October 2021
There's a lot of things that suck about this movie, but I think the writing was the biggest let down.

Or maybe the storyline? Or maybe the acting? Everything was pretty cruddy.

But it was ok to have on in the background and didn't actually anger me like some terrible movies do, so it gets a 3. A real C grade flick though, nonsensical and although I get the plot, it's just not believable in the slightest.

Could've been an interesting premise if it was executed in a way that wasn't just blah. Actors suck too. Cringe.
