Plague as a generic term can refer to any ill, from a plague of locusts to Shakespeare's "a plague on both your houses." But as a disease, plague has a very specific definition. It is caused by the bacterium yersinia pestis. Unfortunately, William Hurt's character (among others) keeps referring to the plague virus. At his level of the CIA, he should know better and so should the writers that it is NOT a virus.
