Bobby Caldwell, the oft-sampled, blue-eyed soul singer behind the late Seventies smash “What You Won’t Do for Love,” has died at the age of 71.
“Bobby passed away here at home,” Caldwell’s wife Mary tweeted Wednesday. “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years.”
While no cause of death was provided, Caldwell had struggled with health issues over the past six years, which Mary cited as a result of an adverse reaction to fluoroquinolone antibiotic.

Over a drumroll reminiscent of a march or religious procession, the massive blue velvet curtains came falling down like a waterfall, and the stage at Madrid’s WiZink Center arena on Saturday turned into a dim lit club, complete with small tables, a bartender, a full orchestra and the evening’s master of ceremonies: the Spanish singer, rapper and songwriter C. Tangana, dressed in a double breasted striped suit and dark shades. “Thank you for being part of the most important gig of my fucking life,” he told the 15,000 fans...

Netflix selectively reveals viewing information when the results are good. More and more stars are pressing the issue, like Kevin Hart did on Fatherhood and Ryan Murphy on Ratched. Such is the case this morning with Jake Gyllenhaal, divulging the stats on The Guilty, the movie he made in lockdown with his Southpaw director Antoine Fuqua.
According to Gyllenhaal, the film — shot over 11 days, with Fuqua working from a trailer after someone in his circle tested positive for Covid — will be seen in 69 million households in its first four weeks, and has been the streamer’s top movie in 91 countries. Gyllenhaal plays a 911 dispatcher with a sketchy past who tries to help a woman kidnapped by her husband, leaving her children in danger.
Pic opened limited in theaters September 24, and on Netflix beginning October 1. It’s a Nic Pizzolato-scripted remake of the Danish film Den Skyldige.

Zdf Enterprises (Zdfe) has acquired the international distribution rights to Spanish horror anthology “Stories to Stay Awake,” in Spanish “Historias para no dormir,” for all territories outside of Spain, Portugal, Italy and Latin America, which will be handled by series producer ViacomCBS International Studios.
50 years ago, Chicho Ibáñez Serrador became a household name in Spain thanks to his creation “Historias Para No Dormir,” a Spanish series which aired from 1966 to 1968 and again in 1982. In 2005, the IP was reformatted for the big screen as a group of shorts in “Peliculas Para No Dormir” (Movies to Stay Awake), with Ibáñez’s contribution “La Culpa” being the filmmaker’s final directorial work. He was joined then by several other Spanish genre masters on the project in Álex de la Iglesia (“30 Coins”), Jaume Balagueró (“[Rec]”), Mateo Gil (“Open Your Eyes”), Enrique Urbizu (“The Ninth Gate”) and, back for this new series reboot, Paco Plaza.

The quarantine movie — a film shot during the pandemic following the appropriate guidelines set forth by the CDC — will be a curious sub-genre to look back on. While these movies vary in quality and sometimes choose to explicitly place themselves in a world where Covid-19 is raging, they all share similar characteristics: small casts, limited locations, chatty scripts.
Antonie Fuqua’s The Guilty, a remake of 2018 Danish hit Den Skyldige written by True Detective scribe Nic Pizzolatto, is certainly a quarantine film. While the cast includes Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Paul Dano, Peter Sarsgaard, Bill Burr, Eli Goree, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, you mostly only see leading man Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal plays Joe Baylor, a police officer working a shift at a 911 emergency response center in Los Angeles. The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. Both “Many Saints” producer and co-writer David Chase and “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve have criticized the corporate decision to release films day-and-date in theaters and via HBO Max, but despite the outcry, the two highly anticipated features lead a massive lineup of acclaimed library movie titles and Emmy Award-winning original series coming to the network in October 2021. Highlights include:
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” (October): Larry David’s Emmy Award-winning series returns for its 11th season in October and will tackle the coronavirus pandemic in a way that feels organic to the show and its protagonist. “We figured out a way that we are definitely living in a reality where the pandemic has happened,...

A glossy Netflix remake of the 2018 single-location Danish thriller about a kidnapped woman seeking help is a well-made piece of entertainment
Here’s a tense single-location thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua, remade from Gustav Möller’s hugely admired Danish movie Den Skyldige (The Guilty) with a little more Hollywood gloss and based on the time-honoured premise of the 911 emergency operator taking a nail-biting call from a female kidnap victim who is pretending to her abductor that she is speaking to her infant daughter, and having to speak in code. (Brad Anderson’s 2013 film The Call – starring Halle Berry as the operator – had a comparable idea.)

Exclusive: On Saturday night, Netflix’s pulsating and riveting new thriller The Guilty will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival showing at the Princess of Wales Visa Screening Room. The film, an English-language remake of the 2018 Danish film Den Skyldige that starred Jacob Cedergren, is directed by Antoine Fuqua and stars Jake Gyllenhaal in a tour-de-force performance as an emergency responder working in a 911 dispatch center in Los Angeles.
The movie takes place in real time during the course of a morning where Gyllenhaal’s bitter and deflated police officer Joe Bayler, now relegated to a somewhat mundane task of fielding various calls, finds himself in a race against time to save a distressed caller (Riley Keough) riding in a car in which she is being abducted even as she seems to be pretending to be phoning her own young daughter. "Listen carefully." Netflix has unveiled a very short teaser for their film The Guilty, a remake of a Danish thriller from a few years ago. This English-language remake (a pretty common trend for Hollywood these days) is directed by Antoine Fuqua, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal in the same role as Danish actor Jakob Cedergren in the original (watch the trailer for it here). The film takes place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center. Call operator Joe Baylor (Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger—but he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out. The film is premiering at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival and will be on Netflix in October soon after. The supporting cast includes a lot of major names, but no details on them yet - mainly because Gyllenhaal is the prominent actor in this.

Jake Gyllenhaal Is a 911 Dispatcher Trying to Save an Abducted Caller in ‘The Guilty’ Teaser (Video)
Six years after working together on the boxing drama “Southpaw,” Jake Gyllenhaal and Antoine Fuqua are reuniting for the Netflix thriller “The Guilty,” a remake of a 2018 Danish film that was selected for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar.
In the teaser, we hear Gyllenhaal play a 911 dispatcher who gets a tearful, frantic call from a woman who has been abducted and locked in a trunk. What starts out as a tense call soon plunges down a path of truth and deception where nothing is as it seems.
Gustav Moller, director of the original Danish film, is an executive producer on the remake. Ethan Hawke, Peter Sarsgaard, Riley Keough, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Paul Dano and Bill Burr also star in the film, which is set to premiere at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival before a release on Netflix on Oct. 1.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has vastly changed how movies and television shows are shot, from rigorous testing and on-set social distancing protocols. But “The Guilty” director Antoine Fuqua has set a new bar — he and his star Jake Gyllenhaal never met in person during production. As was recently reported, Fuqua directed remotely from a van parked a few blocks away from the set.

Thankfully, director Antoine Fuqua and actor Jake Gyllenhaal have a history of collaboration. The two worked together on the 2015 boxing drama, “Southpaw,” and it’s that friendship and bond that they formed during that shoot that made the incredibly difficult production of their latest collab, “The Guilty,” even work. Because, after you hear about what Gyllenhaal and Fuqua had to go through to get the film in front of cameras, you’d understand why trust and friendship are really important.

Sometimes, life really does imitate art. Few have the firsthand experience of knowing that to be true more than director Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal while they worked on their latest movie, "The Guilty." The film, a remake of the 2018 Danish production of the same name, is unique in that it features a single location and takes place over the course of a single day. These circumstances meant that Gyllenhaal underwent an unusually isolated shoot, playing a character who interacts with several cast members without ever actually seeing them. But filming in late 2020 as coronavirus cases were rising in Los...

While Jake Gyllenhaal may not be that into bathing, the actor has found plenty of ways to keep himself busy during the pandemic. Mainly acting. At the same time, he’s been oddly unprolific of late (“Spider-Man: Far from Home” in 2019 is his last major film appearance), which changes with a vengeance rather soon. Netflix‘s “The Guilty” arrives in the fall, “Ambulance” from director Michael Bay comes soon thereafter.

Netflix has dated its fall schedule of film releases, narrative and documentary. The service that promised a new movie each week has a whopping 43 films coming in the final four months of 2021. That is twice the volume of releases most film studios would dream of releasing in a busy calendar year. Can a studio generate that many movies and have most of them be any good? It will be a test of Netflix’s high volume plan, niche and targeted fare sprinkled with big star vehicles including the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Regina King, Jennifer Lawrence, Adam McKay, Benedict Cumberbatch and more.
Here is the schedule; there are some question marks for films that are coming out that month with no specific date, and on limited release awards films that will play the Netflix-owned Paris and other theaters, theatrical date is first...

Netflix remains out in the cold when it comes to the Cannes lineup. The festival and the streamer, despite ongoing conversations, are still unable to bridge their differences and so, once again, the Croisette will be devoid of Netflix movies.
Cannes insists on a local theatrical release for movies playing in Competition but has previously offered the streamer non-Competition slots. ‘Out of Competition’ hasn’t appealed to the streamer.
Festival chief Thierry Fremaux reiterated the status quo today (via a translator): “The festival has a rule that films in Competition must have a local theatrical release. Netflix wishes to have its movies in Competition and on their platform. Since 2017, Netflix hasn’t agreed to play its films outside of Competition but we talk a lot. There were two potential films that may go to other festivals. We regret that we haven’t been able to negotiate their Out Of Competition presence.

Ethan Hawke, Peter Sarsgaard, Riley Keough, Byron Bowers, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, David Castañeda, Christina Vidal and Paul Dano have joined Jake Gyllenhaal in the Netflix thriller “The Guilty.”
Antoine Fuqua is directing from a script by Nic Pizzolatto (“True Detective”), based on the Gustav Moller-helmed Danish drama “Den Skyldige,” which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. The pic takes place over the course of a single morning at a 911 dispatch center with a call operator — played by Gyllenhaal — trying to save a caller in grave danger, but then discovering that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out.
Adrian Martinez, Bill Burr, Beau Knapp and Edi Patterson are also joining the cast. Gyllenhaal is producing along with Riva Marker for Nine Stories; Fuqua and Kat Samick for Fuqua Films; Scott Greenberg; Bold Films’ Michel Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, David Litvak and Svetlana Metkina; and Amet Entertainment’s David Haring.
