It’s been a challenge, but Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), Cole Howard (J. Eddie Peck), Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott), and Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) have all forged bonds with the young lady. How will the other Newmans feel about Claire, what’s they learn the truth?

While Martin Scorsese is celebrating his latest epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” on the awards circuit, the filmmaker is already teasing what could be his next movie, based on Shūsaku Endō’s book “A Life of Jesus.”
Scorsese revealed in a new interview with The Los Angeles Times that his next religious film will be set mostly in the present day, but, according to the paper, “Scorsese doesn’t want to be locked into a certain period, because he wants the film to feel timeless.” Plus, he envisions the film will clock in at around 80 minutes, a stark contrast to “Flower Moon’s” 206-minute runtime. Per the L.A. Times, the movie will focus on “Jesus’ core teachings in a way that explores the principles but doesn’t proselytize.”

Frasier is back, and while the new revival show is neither disappointing nor remarkable, it's at least managed not to sully the legacy of Frasier Crane. The original show remains a beloved sitcom, running for 11 seasons between 1993-2004 and following the character's exploits in his native Seattle. At the end of that series, the titular psychiatrist jets off to Chicago where, we learn from the revival show, he hosted a "Dr. Phil"-style talk show for many years. After his TV career ended and his marriage broke down, however, the lovably pompous doctor decided to head for Paris to write a new book. But in the first episode of the "Frasier" reboot, he stops in Boston to visit his son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) and is convinced to stay, not just to take up an offer of employment at Harvard, but to reconnect with Freddy and make up for years of shaky fathering.

"Cheers" went off the air on May 20, 1993, with a series finale that was watched by 93 million people. That was about two and a half months before I was born, so I have gone my entire life knowing what a cultural behemoth the show was. However, it took me a good deal of time to actually sit down and watch "Cheers." Growing up, my sitcom of choice was the one that took over the spot vacated by "Cheers" to become NBC's comedy crown jewel, "Seinfeld."

But Diane Warren, who’s been writing hits for 37 years, from DeBarge’s “Rhythm of the Night” to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” to Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart,” says she has no intention of selling her songs to anyone.

Ed Bruce, the singer and songwriter who got his start during the Sun Records rockabilly era and went on to write or record a long string of country chart-makers, died of natural causes today in Clarksville, Tennessee. Bruce, who sidelined as an actor on such TV series as James Garner’s 1981 Maverick sequel and 1980’s The Chisholms, was 81.
His death was announced by publicist Jeremy Westby.
A cowriter of the country classic “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” Bruce was only 17 when he worked as a recording engineer for Sam Phillips’ Sun Records, where he’d soon writer and record “Rock Boppin’ Baby.” Through the mid-1960s he wrote songs for pop star Tommy Roe, country singer Charlie Louvin, and, later in the decade, charted himself with minor hits “Walker’s Woods” and a cover version of The Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville.”

The voting for the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s (Lafca) best films and best performances of 2020 took place virtually on Sunday. The awards were announced via the group’s Twitter account. The top prizes went to Steve McQueen’s Amazon Prime Video anthology film series “Small Axe” for Best Picture, plus Best Director Chloé Zhao, Best Actor Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), and Best Actress Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”). See the full list below.
The Lafca vote arrives on the heels of Friday’s New York Film Critics Circle announcements, which crowned Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” as the best film of the year, and Chloé Zhao as the best director of the year for “Nomadland.”

Despite what you may have read, The Right Girl is not a musical about Harvey Weinstein. Then again, having been created by one of the first women to speak out against the rapist, it’s not not a musical about Harvey Weinstein.
Had Broadway not gone dark with the coronavirus pandemic last March, audiences might already be deciding for themselves how much Weinstein there is in the musical’s villain, and how much is Cosby or Lauer or any of the dozen or so famous men melded into the fictional predator The Right Girl calls Paul. If the big-name creative team behind the production has its way, audiences will still get that chance, either in a future vaccine-protected Broadway theater or on a home screen set to a favorite streaming platform. Either way, The Right Girl could become one of the first major works of commercial entertainment – certainly the first...

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who’s still currently vying for the top spot over Joe Biden in the ongoing primaries, is a cinephile, it turns out. As revealed in a recent New York Times profile of the Vermont Senator, his viewing habits are perfectly in line with the climate of the current moment — including the plummet of Wall Street and the global panic incited by the coronavirus.
“Even his amusements seem to be in character. He uses an iPad (not a phone) to devour social media and news, and loves to watch old boxing matches and movies like ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘Melancholia,’ a 2011 dystopian drama that ends with the obliteration of the Earth. He sings along, tunelessly, with 1960s and 1970s folk rock on car radios, takes long walks with his wife and adores his grandchildren,” the New York Times piece reads.

Eugene Hernandez will take over as New York Film Festival director, replacing former chief Kent Jones who stepped down in September.
Hernandez, who serves as deputy executive director of Film at Lincoln Center, is bolstering his responsibilities to include strategic direction and leadership of the New York Film Festival. He will also serve on the film festival’s selection committee. Film at Lincoln Center puts on the New York Film Festival, which first began in 1963.
“Knowing that Kent was going on to greener pastures as a filmmaker gave us a moment to think about where we see the festival going and what person we need to run it,” Film at Lincoln Center executive director Lesli Klainberg told Variety. “It was a very obvious thing to consider Eugene as a person to fulfill this role because of his experience, not only within the organization, but outside in the industry. Film at Lincoln Center has appointed the new director of the New York Film Festival, and his name is familiar to longtime readers of this site. IndieWire co-founder Eugene Hernandez will take over the prestigious fall gathering, marking a significant shift in the festival’s nearly 60-year history.
Hernandez spent the last decade as digital director, then deputy executive director, of Film at Lincoln Center. Dennis Lim, who serves as director of year-round programming, will now also serve as director of programming for the festival.
Hernandez’s new job has personal reverberations for IndieWire, which traces some of its roots to the festival. Even the prospect of interviewing the new festival director creates a potential conflict of interest for this writer, who — full disclosure! — worked for him during his last three years as editor of the site.
At the same time, it would be disingenuous not to acknowledge the connection:...

Held the day before the Academy Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards have long sought to establish its more scrappy bonafides during its traditional Saturday afternoon awards ceremony. Held, per usual, in an overstuffed and often quite boisterous tent on the Santa Monica beach, the Indie Spirits certainly look and feel different than their black tie brethren, a theme that tends to dominate some of the ceremony’s biggest bits.
“It’s so much better than the Oscars. It’s the daytime, we’re on the beach, we recognize female directors, all two of them!,” host Aubrey Plaza cracked during her opening monologue, which poked fun at the differences between the Indie Spirits and the weekend’s other big awards show.

Before the Film Independent Spirit Awards kicked off inside a drafty tent in Santa Monica, IndieWire was set up on the blue carpet ahead of the ceremony, as the stars of independent film breezed by in their Saturday best — but not before taking a minute to talk about their nominated films. And with the Oscars just a day away, one question everyone was eager to answer was, “What was your best picture of 2019?” The answer, almost unanimously, was “Parasite.” Or “Uncut Gems,” sadly shut out of the Oscar race but feted with five Indie Spirit nominations.
“Parasite” fans on the Indie Spirits blue carpet included, well, pretty much everybody — from “Greener Grass” filmmakers Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe to young “Marriage Story” star Azhy Robertson. “‘Parasite’ is the easy answer because it’s the best film of the year,” “The Climb” star and screenwriter Kyle Marvin told IndieWire. In two days, the Film Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out. By now, we all know how different the Spirit Awards are than Oscar. That goes without saying. This year, the Academy Awards largely went in a separate direction, so there’s less crossover than usual. So, that means we can worry less about if these voters will reject/simulate the Academy, and just focus on how the vote might go. I’ve tinkered a bit with my picks, though ultimately I think it could be a really good night for Uncut Gems. Watch out for The Farewell (or Marriage Story) in the top category, while The Lighthouse could end up spoiling in several categories. It’s going to be interesting, the results, that much I can assure you of… Enough talk. You’ve read my thoughts on this race already in the very recent past. Time for what...

The media’s most-discussed Oscar story this year is the lack of diversity. But in fact, awards are the worst gauge of Hollywood’s commitment to inclusion, because the results are always kept secret, and because we’re talking about voters’ tastes (which may or may not involve the need to Make A Statement with their votes). The real yardstick should be Hollywood hiring — and every year at Oscar time, film-industry decision-makers should be held accountable and prove how much they’ve done to improve matters, beyond the vacant promise of “we’re committed to inclusion.”
Despite the hand-wringing and the finger-pointing, this has been the best awards season ever for women and people of color. They did not get the hoped-for (and deserved) nominations for Oscar, Golden Globes and BAFTA. But there were a lot of films in the conversation, and that’s a dramatic change in only five years.

It's hard not to miss President Obama on a public daily basis these past few years given the current hellscape but it's especially hard to not miss him on a personal level when he reminds us that he is genuinely into cinema. I mean how many Us Presidents would even see movies that don't even crack a million at the box office like Transit and Diane, and movies from other countries and all genres. And the rest of his list: Atlantics, Parasite, Booksmart... The good taste!

Adding to the growing chatter of end-of-the-year lists on Twitter among critics and moviegoers, Barack Obama has shared his picks for the best films and TV of 2019. His eclectic list features plenty of talked-about favorites, such as “Booksmart,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Parasite.” He also names “Fleabag,” “Unbelievable,” and “Watchmen” as his favorite television series. See Obama’s full Twitter list of film and TV favorites below.
Obama clearly knows his movies. On the film side, he includes some lesser-known, perhaps more cinephile-inclined favorites, from Kent Jones’ somber drama “Diane,” starring Mary Kay Place, to Christian Petzold’s revisionist World War II film “Transit,” Jia Zhangke’s cosmic “Ash Is Purest White,” and Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego’s crime epic “Birds of Passage.” Obama also is a fan of “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” a mid-year release from A24 that has quietly appeared on critics’ 10 best lists as well.

The precursor season has begun, ladies and gentlemen. Yes, the Gotham Awards have announced their nominations for 2019. This independent body obviously cites indie works, but with the potential landscape of the Oscar race this year, they’ve got a ton of potential players eligible here. As such, when you gaze at the list of nominees for this year, it’s no surprise that it’s littered with Academy Award contenders. Don’t expect the massive blockbusters and major studio hopefuls, obviously, but a solid crop of titles from the impending race are represented. Gotham did a very strong job again this year, setting us up to potentially have a 2019 awards season to remember. Leading the way here with three nominations apiece are The Farewell, The Last Black Man in San Francisco (though not cited in Best Feature), Marriage Story, and Uncut Gems. Right behind them with a pair of citations each were Clemency,...

Exclusive: Emmy winner Mary Kay Place and Orange Is the New Black‘s Elizabeth Rodriguez have been set to guest star in multiple episodes of Showtime’s Shameless, which returns for Season 10 on November 10.
Place will play Aunt Oopie, the irritatingly sweet aunt to Tami (Kate Miner), who is the girlfriend of Lip (Jeremy Allen White). Aunt Oopie is a lifesaving babysitter but has some complicated worldviews. Rodriguez will play Faye, a femme fatale who takes to Frank (William H. Macy) for reasons at first not understood.
They join Constance Zimmer, Chelsea Rendon, Rachel Dratch and Anthony Alabi, who have also joined the cast for the upcoming 10th season.
The series premiere picks up sixth months after last season’s finale, with Frank using his leg injury to collect as many prescription drugs as possible, leading him to an old friend. Debbie returns home after finishing military school, Liam (Christian Isaiah) is committed to learning more about black history and culture, and Ian (Cameron Monaghan) and Mickey (Noel Fisher) rekindle their romance in prison as cellmates.
Place, an Emmy winner for Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, on the TV side most recently appeared on Imposters, Lady Dynamite, Grace and Frankie and Getting On. In film, she recently starred in the 2018 indie drama Diane. She is repped by Gersh.

Kent Jones, the director and selection committee chair of the New York Film Festival, will step down from his position following the upcoming 57th edition of the festival, Film at Lincoln Center announced Thursday.
Jones has been the director of the festival for seven years, and he’ll depart after the festival concludes, which takes place between Sept. 27 and Oct. 13. Film at Lincoln Center’s executive director Lesli Klainberg will oversee the transition of leadership, but no replacement has yet been announced. Jones will also continue to work with the team in an advisory role.
“At some point when I was pretty young and already deep into movies, the New York Film Festival became a beacon for me,” Jones said in a statement. “Throughout its history, it has been a true home for the art of cinema–that was how it began with Richard Roud and Amos Vogel, that was...

New York Film Festival director and selection committee chair Kent Jones will step down at the conclusion of this year’s festival, which begins next week. The news was first reported in Variety and confirmed by the festival this morning.
Last year, Jones made his feature directorial debut with the Mary Kay Place-starring “Diane,” which won the Best Feature award at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, and his exit was reportedly inspired by his desire to continue making his own films. IndieWire first reported on the possibility of Jones’ exit earlier this summer.
Jones will continue to work with Film at Lincoln Center in a to-be-determined advisory position. Flc executive director Lesli Klainberg will oversee a search for Jones’ replacement. While no new director have been named, an announcement is expected soon.

In a surprise move, New York Film Festival’s director and selection committee chair of seven years Kent Jones will step down following this year’s 57th edition, which runs Sept. 27-Oct. 13.
The departure comes as Jones’ feature filmmaking career is taking off. Issues of potential conflicts of interest have arisen as his work has moved from mostly cineaste-oriented documentaries such as the 2015 doc “Hitchcock/Truffaut” to narrative features including his 2019 drama “Diane.” That film’s exec producer and Jones’ friend of nearly three decades, Martin Scorsese, is the director of Nyff’s opening-night film, “The Irishman.”
Jones tells Variety that this move has been in the discussion phase with the Film at Lincoln Center board for many months. “It developed kind of organically from the whole experience and reception of ‘Diane,’” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2018 and was released by IFC films in March 2019.
