Great movie
svader14 October 2019
Loved it.

Can't understand the low rating by one person moaning about the film being dubbed. Turn off the dubbing then ? It's really that simple . . .

I enjoyed it and would recommend . .

Excellent movie
Shahid_H_raja10 April 2023
I just stumbled upon it while searching for a different genre to watch but glad to watch this excellent melodramatic movie, crafted with so much attention and with a great ending. A delicate subject, well handled with superb acting. Excellent acting work overall, sometimes you could actually feel what they were going through. Interestingly, it does not contain too many explicit erotic scenes. And it is black and white which has added a sort of surrealism to the movie; you are lost in the 1920s as if you are living in that age. Those of you who have seen "Ammonite" or "Blue is the Warmest Colour" would love it.

Meaningful.
spiderdib28 June 2020
The story moved me too much and is that although the film in general is not perfect and there are moments where it goes beyond any meaning, it does come to tell you what happened and continues to happen.

It is a real case and I loved the choice of black and white visuals: Great decision.

Octopus
jasminhegmann11 June 2019
I don't get it? Why are there so few ratings? Don't we always crave and scream for authentic LGBTQ+ content? This is part of our history. I loved it. And I love Netflix being so open about them representing our community and why it's nessecary.

The only thing I don't get is the OCTOPUS?!

The Heart Wants What It Wants
Foutainoflife5 July 2019
Elisa and Marcela is a film about two women that fall in love and what they had to do, the ways they had to compromise and the things they sacrificed for it.

Not a bad film. I wasn't expecting it to be filmed in black and white but I had not seen any trailers for it. I thought it was filmed well and the actors played their rolls with a lot of sincerity.

There was plenty of passion portrayed but I did think it was missing a bit more drama when it came to the way they were mistreated. There was no denying that there was some mistreatment but for the amount of passion being shown, it just seemed a bit lopsided. They had a struggle before them it just didn't come across as very intense. Don't get me wrong though, love is worth whatever struggle you may need to overcome and they did that.

So, my takeaway from this is that it is a good biopic. It is sweet at times and super steamy at others. I'm glad I checked it out.

A story missing pieces
edmundgrieg-8038829 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ultimately, I could never conceive of why they fell in love. Everything felt so by the numbers. Meet-cute, sexist dad, then the go for a walk, then they go in the water, then they write to each other, then...and so on...oh, and then the interesting plot point happened...y'know, the point of telling the story. But it just happened. It should have been so much more.

I understand 'show, don't tell', but, man, did this need some details. Even plot points were left out. It almost felt like the only time the movie ever said anything was during the sex scenes. These were jilted and strange. I think there was one shot where they looked like they were enjoying themselves (pretty crucial, if your entire movie hinges on its sex scenes).

Oh, there's an octopus in one of them. And something that looked like VHS reel (but since VHS wasn't invented yet...) Fetishized, yes, porno, no. Just an uncomfortable mix of kink and some rolling about.

In the second half of the movie, some more events occur (this is, effectively, where the story kicks off). But, again, strange things keep happening without reason. One of them gets pregnant. I figured it was a pillow and it was all for show. No, she's pregnant. I have no idea how.

Then a happy ending was delivered for them. But one of the characters refused it. Even after abandoning her child to be with her.

In some scenes, there was so much missing, at times I could not tell what was happening. The reason why I am nitpicking about things like plot, that don't necessarily have to really matter, is because I was so unconvinced by the actual love story. And so much of made no sense.

As of writing this review, this movie's score is a disappointing 6.5. I don't understand why it's rated so low, when it's such a beautiful art work.

Powerful Yet Fetishized
epicmovieman-664804 July 2019
Elisa & Marcela is a beautifully shot piece of cinema. Each frame of nearly every shot looks like it could be framed, and hung up on display in a museum.

The representation of being queer can be problematic at times. Some of the shots imply that Elisa and Marcela's relationship is disgusting. Two of these are cut away shots of a dead squid; and a third shot involving the corpse of a squid being used in a sexual act. The three sex scenes throughout the film felt like as if I were watching a porno, and dragged out for far too long. Throughout these segments in the film, it felt like the movie was catering more to the "horny male demographic" rather then tell the story of Marcela and Elisa. The movie has this atmosphere that makes you feel like our two main leads shouldn't be romantically involved together in any capacity what so ever. The prejudice Elisa and Marcela experienced was very well executed, and is very relatable for many LGBTQ+ individuals living in countries where homosexuality is outlawed. Even today.

The pacing of the film is pretty slow but it does allow us (the audience) to form a connection with Elisa and Marcela.

The performances of the two women playing Elisa and Marcela were pretty solid.

For me as a bisexual man, this film isn't the best representation of homosexuality in film, but deep down inside, you'll find a very powerful and engaging story.

Many glaring issues: bad script, voice dubbing, etc.
earthboli31 August 2019
Just wow. First of all, the script is not period-appropriate, so the characters talk and act like they're from the present day (using phrases like "I guess so," "we're circus freaks," etc.). Second, the relationship is way too quick to develop and feels rushed/forced. Third, a movie in Spanish was dubbed over in English voices by some very white-sounding ladies who sound very similar. WHY dub the film??? What about subtitles??? It's annoying and makes scenes (including sex scenes) seem absurd (yes, they dub breathing sounds). Speaking of which, some bizarre props were incorporated into the sex scenes Fourth, poor editing makes several scenes confusing and leaves a lot of unanswered questions. It's hard to understand where they are, how long they've been there, why certain things happen, etc. And this isn't all the issues, just a small smattering of them. Overall, terrible script (lost in translation or just horrible writing?), bad editing, bad filtering (overdid it on the vintage look), unnecessary & melodramatic voice dubbing, plot with a lot of holes in it & unanswered questions, bizarre/freakish sex scenes....I could go on, but do you want me to? The fact that this was a true story makes it all the more tragic that this movie did not do it justice AT ALL. I also got really bored about halfway through because this wasn't funny bad, it was "take itself too seriously" and boring bad. The real-life couple deserved so much better than this embarrassing depiction.

Really good, but some questionable aspects
catrinnie31 December 2021
I honestly really enjoyed this film, and I don't usually watch romance so for me, the storyline wasn't predictable. Saying this, I can see that many reviewers thought it was. I definitely found myself rooting for Elisa and Marcela throughout the film.

I thought it was a bit weird having seaweed and a bloody octopus in some of the sex scenes??? Also, it didn't seem to quite fit having a baby appear suddenly. But, excusing those details I really enjoyed the film and felt quite tearful at the end.

Love of Lovers
nammage8 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've been watching romance films for the past week 'cause I'm in that mood but haven't really found one where I actually cared what happened. Also, I'm also getting so tired of flashback films, romance, or not. It's so trite, it's (figuratively) giving me a headache. If one is going to tell a story from the past then start there, don't start from after it's all said and done and then flashback. Reminds me of bad horror films.

I think the film went for the reality without adding too much fiction. Sadly people typically don't want reality especially in concern to actuality. The truth of the women this story is about, how they met, fell in love, and did everything they could to stay together even with one becoming a 'man' and the other getting pregnant to legitimize the marriage to her 'man', and then attempting to survive through that. Not very easy, especially for the time period. Did this film portray that well? Eh, so so. The excitement, if one calls it that, doesn't come until the last hour, the first hour was the meeting, falling in love, sex, happiness etc., and it was okay. At times it seemed not quick enough and other times a bit slow and rough but overall, it's not a bad film.

The reviewer who stated "circus freak" is a modern term one would refer to another (or themselves) is not accurate. The term comes from when circuses began using those referred to as "freaks" in their acts, and that started widely in the mid 19th century (1850s) but can be traced back as far as the 18th century in Russia. Since this film takes place in the late 19th to early 20th century, and based on sensationalism used quite frequently during that time period, it is quite possible the term was in use by every day people in reference to those different to 'normal' people of the time. The word "guess" has been used since the 14th century. It's use in varying phrases such as "I guess so" instead of "I suppose so" I'm sure didn't take 700-800 years to follow. The one word referred to but not mentioned, yeah that one while not "modern" has been used since the 1920s. So, not a word from this film's time period but not a modern word in the least, the longer version of that word did come from the 19th century. Also, I don't know how you watched this but when I did, it had subtitles. There are options to turn things off if watching it from a platform. If you saw it in a theatre, well, can't help you with that.

Remarkable
mplaza-3875311 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A beatifully shot and crafted film, as one has come to expect from Isabel Coixet, but also a brave one, one that in addition seems to defy the increasingly conservative trend towards what's dealt with (and shown) in maintream movies and what is not (paraphrasing Sir Elton John's recent remark on his biopic, life is not meant to be pg-13!). The following might qualify as spoiler: I would have switched the roles between the actresses, as perhaps Greta Fernández would have looked more convincing as a man. As she is, however, I find her the more interesting actress. Coixet assigns her the role of Marcela, portrayed at first as a rather naive character promptly and easily seduced by the more assertive Elisa (portrayed by an also magnificent Natalia de Molina), but subtly (yet without pause) she develops Marcela into the more forceful of the couple and the one who makes the ultimate sacrifices for their love, as is not only purposefully falling pregnant to facilitate their getting away with their "marriage" facing the town's folk but also surrendering her newborn daughter to the portuguese thitherto childless couple that facilitates their trip to South America, where they will find refuge and peace in a remote location in Argentina. The big question Ana, Marcela's left behind daughter, poses to her biological mother upoin their encounter, many years later, of whether the whole affair and scandal was worth the effort, remains with a somewhat ambiguous reply, and I think Coixet does that on purpose as this is no fairy tale. Yes, they were left finallly in peace in the remoteness of Argentina's Patagonian regions, but what Ana finds is a couple of rather lonely oldish women, cut off from the world, Marcela a probable heavy drinker, who as time went by might have drifted somewhat apart but remained together as they had no other recourse. Neither of them could return to Spain or Portugal due to a threat of incarceration, and if they went to a more populated area in Argentina they might have faced a similar fate. Remember the action takes place in the beginning of the 20th century, in a Spain where a civil registry did not exist until the 1930's and where the Catholic Church had a heavy presence, especially in the province where Elisa and Marcela met, rural Galicia. Not an easy choice then, not an easy ending.

Horay then for Isabel Coixet, a film maker one has grown to respect more and more over the years, and thumbs up to her two valiant protagonists.

It is not just about LGBT Message. Its about Total Package.
lestatbesa24 July 2020
It is the story of the 1st Same sex marriage recorded in the Spain. Well, I am not reviewing here about LGBT community but more likely the technical or should I say my impression on the movie as i watch it til the end (note: I fell asleep in this movie around 10 mins I guess). My first thought in opening scene is like i am watching a Black and white Dolce and Gabbana or any beauty commercial we see in ads. Acting is bearable but not compelling enough to push the story. There is a scene that I laughed for being cringy. Since I watched it in English audio, i will not give impression on the screenplay cause there is a chance that it might be good in its native dialect.. Story is predictable, I know it biography but there no wow factor it. Well, if it is advisable to watch? hmm try it, but not suggested. This film want to prove a point yet managed to deliver less. LGBT message is not just rating factor here its about total package no offense to other reviewer/critique

Visual Poetry
rainysng99-835-32860623 June 2019
I wasn't expecting an arthouse film but a traditional narrative, and so was pleasantly surprised. The formal critic reviews I read beforehand, were overly harsh methinx. Using contemporary film-making styles with dramatic dialogue, scenes of conflict, characterisatiion development etc to drive a plot, would not have enhanced it in my view. While the critics were "eye rolling" and complaining of how slow it was moving, i was walking through an art gallery, lingering on moments captured beautifully in the B&W landscape.

It is a simple tale told with minimal dialogue primarily through imagery, with beauty, poignancy, grief, the playful innocence of the girls they once were, the elemental power of giving birth, among other things. The archetype images of the first Goddess in her aspects of Maiden, Mother, Crone across the three acts. The erotic scenes so pooh-poohed by the critics were also staged with poetic metaphors of the Feminine spiritual principle of Nature.

Good
matiasdoradau27 August 2020
I don't get why it has got so many bad reviews by critics. It's an overall good movie. Yes, it doesn't have the best script of all time neither has the best side actors, but it has two good protagonist that do a pretty good acting and has beautiful scenes where it shines. Definitely its strongest part is the first half of the film, where it focuses in the emotion between them, the second half just lack of intensity and lost some of the power of the first, but still i think is worth watching, and an overall good and beautiful movie.

We need more films like this one
dskywalker028 February 2021
Even though it has some explicit scenes, this is what happens when a woman directs this type of film. I can't stress enough the importance of having these stories told, true LGBTQ+ stories, with or without a happy ending. And this one is particularly beautiful, a lot of sad decisions and intense struggles, but a real love story in the end.

Love always wins!
gamead-920678 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Beautiful! Even after all the bad things they went through bc of homophobic trashy people, they never stopped fighting for their love! And since i'm from Porto, I have to give a huge shoutout to all the people who accepted and helped Elisa and Marcela back in 1901. The people and town of Porto did THAT! Amazing? And I love that in the end of the movie they are still alive and together. Love will always win <3

Exceptional!
rps-210 June 2019
This is a powerful and beautifully done film. It is shot in black and white which somehow enhances the whole thing. It would have had far less impact had it been done in colour. The camera work is wonderfully creative, reminiscent of the classic still images of Ansel Adams or Edward Weston who were masters of black and white. There is a lot of graphic lesbian sex, maybe too much, but all of it is tasteful and enhances the long, sad story of the film (and I am someone who normally dislikes graphic "humping scenes" hetero or homo.) This film is a triumph of cinematic art!
