Low class life
ricreads16 February 2022
Filmed well, good cast, weak script, all predictable, glorifies violence, prostitution. Manipulation sys heavy in prostitution; it's been done before. Same tired foolish woman. Same tired foolishness. It enough character development to care about the main characters. I'm watched it but can't recommend it.

Not that good!
BudoSenpai25 February 2022
This is okay, definitely not an 8.3/10! The story is very predictable and the acting is mediocre. Is it me or does the color keep changing throughout the movie? The person that did the color grading on this is obviously inexperienced.

WELL DONE!
edclark-438069 July 2020
This is a job well done to the Bay Area film community! It is so great to see amazing actors tell a story that is true for some many individuals. Everyone's story is worth being told. I look forward to up coming projects from the lead actors, Jazmin and Evan. I'm sure this production company has much more in store for us.

I can't recommend this Trash
liyahwhitfield14 April 2022
Trashy movie. Naive, foolish woman being led astray. Did not finish watching. This is the representation of a young black female that this movie is presenting? It really isn't good. The movie is trying to shed light but at the same time , why are the girls so stupid?? Surely even a teenager can sense danger and do her best to stay away from the entrapments of a promiscuous life.

Amazing and truthful Movie
lindadayce9 July 2020
This movie had my emotions all over the place. First I'm excited that this was created by the black community and not only that it tells the hard truth of what black American women and men go through. It shows how black men end up in certain positions whether it's good or bad, and it shows the hard truth about the foster care system. The main thing it shows is the struggle and what it is for majority of black women in America. Are there hard scenes in the movie? Yes, but it shows real ness. It time to stop sugar coating things and bring the truth out. I mean 13 Reasons had some really hard scenes in it and this movie is not as hard as that lol. But it still gets the point across. However, the part that took me out and I think most people wouldn't see or choose not to see is the corruption in our police departments. So yes I'm happy that someone has finally spoken out about the truths behind this lifestyle. Thank you to those who produced this movie and to the actors that showed how it is in life. You guys did an amazing job and I pray this movie goes far.

The broken rose (2018) (honest review)
lailurosa3 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So I watched this movie today and I have to say it wasn't that good. Sorry, but the cameras had weird lighting and in some moments the colors got dark and more vibrant but the next second it's all bright and pale. It was annoying how the movie had close-up shots all the time, and I couldn't tell what was going on sometimes. The story is really about how 3 young girls are struggling, and I'm glad that there showing that because it needs to be talked about more. But geez, the cinema photography was awful. As the audience has to assume what the characters are going through it felt like they weren't even they are flat and need more depth. I know the Rose is traumatized and went through some horrific events, it creates low self-worth, but oh my gosh Rose was kinda annoying since she just shopped and insulted her tomboy friend who GENUINELY cares about her. I just felt angry about why the characters didn't kill the boyfriend sooner, even more, awful that people like the evil boyfriend get away with stuff and find more victims. Good things happen to evil people like the boyfriend, and this movie shows that. But I won't recommend it unless you wanna be disappointed, the trailer dose not fit this bad movie with the most awful visuals.

Impeccable acting!
thompsonjenafer9 July 2020
The actors throughout did amazing storytelling. Every single actor gave an authentic representation of their character. Nothing felt forced, everything flowed. At first I felt pacing was a bit slow, however I realize now it was a choice that was strategic to intensify the atmosphere of what was going on. Evan Joelle's acting is one of the best of this generation that I have seen by far and I know he will do great things!

This little low budget movie with all of these unknown actors...
RachWahler14 February 2022
...had me in the first ten seconds. If you know anything about or anyone who knows about foster care, being abandoned or being abused, this one hits home. It was well-written and suspenseful. I stayed up way past my bedtime trying to see the end but I could not take my eyes off of these characters. Great character development for Rose and her other friend but that ending... I can't spoil it for you but you won't be let down.

I am COMPLETELY moved by The Oakland Film Company's first feature film. This movie was AMAZING! This story depicts the true grit involved in sex-trafficking. So proud of what "The Broken Rose" has accomplished! Keep an eye out for this fantastic movie!

This movie sheds light on a topic we all wan to go away but it preserves. The acting was phenomenal for an indie film. It's an inspiration to be able to tell stories through film. Oakland should be proud.

A 20 OUT OF 10!!!!!!!!!
randyfit10 July 2020
This film is an amazing piece of art. It was masterfully made. The acting, the writing, the cinematography, the plot, the build up, the realness!!!!! OMG I can't say enough about this film. The actor Evan Joelle who plays Shaka will for sure be a huge star. He made me hate him and then feel for him and then hate him all at the same time. You will know exactly what I'm talking about when you watch this film!!! Whoever made this film, you deserve an Oscar!

This movie is real, raw, and uncut. It gives a look into a very real reality for some and how the system responds as well. I want to issue a job well done to all the actors. ESPECIALLY Evan (Shaka) he had everyone glued to him. Will recommend to any and everyone looking for a good film to watch and great lesson to learn and pass on.

Very Gritty, very realistic
thenakddremedy15 April 2022
It was raw and real.

My heart was breaking for Rose because she really didn't know her worth.

The truth is, these girls aren't "stupid"...they're looking for love and there are narcissistic predators out here like Evan...and worse...looking for them.

Love your daughters, love your sons, educate and protect them.

Exceptional Movie
eyeshamunir17 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The Broken Rose is a movie by Matt McClelland released in the year 2018. It is the first film by Oakland Film Company and I must say it is simply amazing. The movie is real and uncut. It is so realistic that it gives a look into the real world of foster care and how children survive the harsh realities of this world. The film is about a girl named Rose. She is a cute and intelligent girl. One day at school, her teacher comes to know that she is not living an ideal life a girl of her age should be living. She barely gets anything to eat and has not taken shower in two weeks. Her teacher informs child protection services. Upon their visit, the team confirms that she is living in a miserable condition and should be evacuated. Amazingly, her father also abandons her and she is forced to live in foster care. Time passes by and Rose grows up to be a young and beautiful girl. Despite all the difficulties in her life, she manages to be a bright student with good grades. The foster home she lives in is not ideal as well. Her foster father used to abuse her sexually, mentally, and physically. But Rose tolerated all of it as she does not have any other option. One day, Rose went to a party with her friends. One of her friends give her a ride back home and she was introduced to a man named Shaka. He also belongs to the black community just like her. Shaka praises her beauty and says that she does not look like a seventeen years old girl. He drops his number on her cell phone and asks her to contact him any time she needs which she does asking him to pick her up from somewhere. Things take an unexpected turn and Rose's foster mother comes to know about the sexual abuse her husband is inflicting upon Rose. She calls the child protection office and asks them to taker Rose away as she no longer wants to keep her in her home. She is being taken away and put up with two other girls. Rose's world shattered once again and she cried her heart out. This is where Shaka comes back in her life and rescues her. He spares the horrors she is going through. He takes her in and showers all kinds of luxuries on her. She wears expensive clothes, jewelry, and go shopping any time she wants. But nothing comes free in this world. Everything has to pay a price so does Rose. Few months after she moved in with Shaka, he asks her to help him financially and for this, he starts sending her to different men for sexual encounters. She finds it difficult at first but soon she gets used to it. One day, one of her school friends Brian comes to see her and tells her that he knows about her and Shaka. Rose brushes him away and goes back to her life. But Brian does not stop contacting her and offered his help to get her out of this miserable life. Rose asks Brian to stay out of her life for his good. She warns him that Shaka is not a good man and he can harm him if he wants. During this chaos, Rose continues working for Shaka as a prostitute. One day, a cop turns up at her place. He finds her an intelligent and smart girl. They exchanged views on life and got close to each other as friends. Then in one scene, we see Nicole, the school mate of Rose, and the one who introduced her to Shaka. Nicole is HIV positive now because of working as a prostitute. She attends group therapy sessions and shares her story. She is also a victim of Shaka who trapped her with his charms and later forced her to work as a prostitute if she wants to have a life of her dreams. Nicole agreed and now ended up with AIDS. She is also recovering from substance abuse. One the other side, the city of Oakland started receiving dead bodies of underage prostitutes. During one meeting, the cop tells Rose to stay away from Shaka as he could be dangerous for her. He suggests her to run away before she gets hurt. Rose calls Brian and makes a plan to run away with him. But before she can execute her plan, things get ugly. Shaka comes to know about her contacting Brian and threatens Rose to stay away from him. Rose is frightened. On the other side, Brian gets infuriated the way Shaka treats rose and threatens him with his gun. Finally, both Brian and Rose manage to escape and hides in Brian's grandmother's house. This film is an amazing piece of art. It focuses on the issue of sex trafficking and the deplorable condition of sex workers in the country. The film demonstrates how underage girls are trapped and forced into prostitution. The pimps manipulate the fragile and inexperienced minds of young girls and make them do things no one can imagine. The film has emotions all over. It tells the truth about the foster care system. I am glad that finally, someone has spoken about the injustices and brutalities of this system. If we do not speak, how will we bring the change our world needs? As far as the acting is concerned, all the actors performed phenomenally. The acting seems so real and raw that it makes you forget for a moment that you are watching a film. The storyline and plot are also well built up and gives a feeling of realness. Every single character gave a genuine representation of their character and story flows smoothly. However, I found the pace a bit slow but I think that was necessary to develop the atmosphere of what was going on. I wish and hope that this film goes far as deserved.

Good Movie
samanthasosan2 August 2022
It is a good movie and very eye opening even for minor situations where someone is controlling even if it's not sex trafficking. Although important still!! Recommend watching.
