Sex & Nudity

  • Several scenes with rear nudity throughout the series. Some are sexual in nature.
  • There is a running joke where characters often walk in on other characters of the opposite sex in the bathroom in various stages of undress. They are portrayed as accidentally seeing someone in the nude, but usually most of the nudity is covered from the camera with a quickly placed towel.

Violence & Gore

  • The basic concept of the series is that if someone gets caught in the rain, they will immediately die a painful and disturbing death. This happens to most of the population and is portrayed in most, if not all of the episodes. The corpses of those killed by the rain are everywhere, and if a character touches one, or accidentally touches a puddle or body of water without protection, they are infected, and can infect others until they die shortly after.

Profanity

  • several F bombs throughout, starts out mild and drastically jumps per ep
  • F bombs & lesser obscenities.
  • F-bombs are prolific on the show, to the point that you ask yourself if that's the only English vulgar word they know. The CC and the spoken don't always match. The spoken has more F words than the CC.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Several of the main characters drink throughout, and one smokes almost constantly. Some brief instances of drugs.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The show depicts a lawless setting where resources are scarce. There is rarely bloody violence, and one instance of sexual assault that is upsetting but not graphic; the overall tone is dark and the characters are constantly under threat. Victims of the infection go into a frenzy, which can be intense and disturbing.
  • Throughout the show, victims of the viral infection go into convulsions, vomit, or foam at the mouth before dying. These scenes are usually brief.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Upper nudity is portrayed fairly often and especially during sexual encounters. Nipples are shown occasionally, but usually not in a sexual context. Nudity is voluntary, with the character removing their own clothes, though one girl only does so after having been drugged and is sexually assaulted/date raped.
  • Graphic nudity is breasts and butts and is mostly predictable. The majority of it is in S1 E5. Some other episodes have brief moments of nudity. Nudity in a sexual context is usually only depicted from the shoulders up.
  • One character eavesdrops and comes to believe that they are seen as just a burden and will be discarded (killed) when they are no longer useful. In order to avoid being killed, this character has sex with one of the dominant members of the group and continues to do so with the purpose of obtaining protection from death.

Violence & Gore

  • Deaths include uncontrollable explosive vomiting, foaming at the mouth, body contortions/cramps, and usually happen in just a few seconds, leaving a tortured looking corpse behind.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • One character becomes addicted to prescription pain pills.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Although the rain has killed off most of the population, characters are still systematically murdered in different ways by different groups of people, but always with the same excuse: that they are dying for a cause--to find a cure and save everyone else. Even characters with the strongest morals often have to choose the fate of others, and usually between the death of someone they love and the death of a stranger.
  • Characters believe that there is someone in the population who is the source of the cure--someone who is immune to the virus. In order to find that one person who they hope exists, they start secretly injecting the virus into people, with the facade of it being a vaccine, one at a time, secretly killing massive quantities of people, knowingly, in search of the one person who they believe is out there who would survive the injection.
  • Most of the population is willing to kill others in order to obtain food.
