It deserves better
isabelaosoriomontoya25 January 2021
People should give this a chance! It is amazing, and sure it's not as "dark" or "serious" as the previous versions, but the writing is spot on. This thing only got one season and a half, with the crew behind it having a LOT of plans for arcs that would make the show so much better. This show was actually amazing and got wrecked for being different and Nickelodeon giving it a garbage treatment

At first I had my reservations but I ended liking it
Rectangular_businessman21 August 2020
Like many other reviewesr, I had my reservations about this series, not being particularly fond of some of the redesigns (Master Splinter is completely unrecognizable here) and the changes made to the plot and the characters.

After watching some of the episodes my impressions were more positive, mostly thanks to the good animation this series had, with an effective characterization. (The personalities of the characters are very different to their usual portrayal from the comic and the previous series, but the new characterization isn't necessarily bad, just different.)

If you are expecting to see a serious (Or at least, a semi-serious) version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, than you are going to be dissapointed by this series. I personally think this is more enjoyable as its own thing rather than as an adaptation.

You could have done so much more if you only had time
cinthiatorres-773507 August 2022
I wish we would have had more of this, because if you watched the series finale, you know there is more to the Kraang than what we were shown. That plot could have developed better if they had been given the time and support. But what we were given met expectations. It's amazing how powerful this version of the Kraang is to have the future they showed us. The movie has very good references to its previous incarnations and Casey's themes is something that will leave me intrigued. It bothers me a lot when haters say that this incarnation won't be able to attract new people to the fandom who are not older than 10 years. This show is what made me really interested in the rest of the versions, and if it only appealed to children, what would be the problem? The series have been precisely to attract that audience. It's a shame they let her go so easily with so much potential she has. There are many classic stories and characters that didn't get a chance to be shown.

Shell shocked!
rtclipp3 December 2018
Change is not always a good thing and this show definitely is guilty of that. First off the Turtles aren't even brothers anymore. They are all different species of turtles. So the family bond is lost. Their father Master Splinter has changed from a traditional Sensei rat too a loafing overweight gerbil. The people involved must have no respect for character. The original turtles aren't even close to the original concepts. Leonardo is now a sarcastic nitwit. Not the struggling leader that demonstrates quality of character that we all love. Raphael is now the leader which is kind boring because he's has always been the muscle and rebel of the team. They changed April O'Neil from a white redhead to an African American; which I don't understand because it's the base of her character. Why not just create a new character that's African American? I think that would have been a lot more interesting and fun. The biggest problem with this show is it's Nickelodeon at its worst. It's like they took Teen Titans, Ren n' Stimpy, mixed a little Sponge Bob Square Pants, slapped TMNT on it, and made a show that's isn't entertaining in the slightest. Next time Nickelodeon buy the rights to battletoads. You might get some more viewers, because true fans of the series will not continue watching this garbage. The series just doesn't feel like TMNT and that is the biggest reason it can get the shell out of here.

You'll never get a series that could re-engineer TMNT in such a unique way again
isabellaleonard-5758428 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Animation: 10/10 (not even a contest in comparison to older series)

Art style (subjective): IMO 8/10 (it improves halfway into season 1 using subtlety thinner lines with balanced weight)

Character Design: 10/10 (TMNT usually copies & pasted the same shape just with different colours but actually making them different species adds so much to their personalities) also they give background characters so much diversity that it's insane & each one is loved by a fan.

Comedy: (this was definitely a big aspect in the writers work, they even made 1 toilet joke & it was actually funny because it was also a paper joke that worked with the episode!) 9/10 because visual jokes rarely are bad.

Music: very eccentric yet works with the shows tone 7/10 also the characters do sing time to time and they actually improve like real people.

Character development/arcs: DONNIE & SPLINTER HAD ARCS WHICH I NEVER THOUGHT THEY COULD HAVE???? SCIENCE VS MAGIC & LASTING IMPACT OF CHILDHOOD TRAUMA. Raph also had a fantastic older brother development as a leader & April too with how she feels she isn't normal or part of the family. Leo & Mikey I really hope they get their development in the movie. 10/10 Format: Understandable that the show was meant to be purely episodic but Nickelodeon made them add a plot but at least they organised it so a plot developed after every 5-6 episodes and then the finale. 5/10. A lot of shows do this format and eventually lead into full plot episodes so the fact it stopped at season two is extremely sad.

The plot itself (7/10) because it was rushed no thanks to Nickelodeon cutting season two in half & made the crew force 3 seasons worth of plot into a season & a half. It was really good seeing a far more developed story than what 2003 TMNT gave.

As a huge tmnt fan i tried and.........
karephree-390843 January 2019
I have never left a review for any show before. This show made me feel the need to share my thoughts in hopes that somehow it makes a difference. I am 34 yeara old and grew up watching tmnt as a kid. Ive watched every version from the cartoons, comics, movies even the horrible knock off power rangers when they had the girl turtle venus lol. So with all that said i was both excited and sad to see a new tmnt show. I was excited because its tmnt how could it be bad me and my 4 year old son love tmnt. Sad because we both loved the last version and watched every episode of every season and have just about every action figure from that series. When i first saw the announcement of the show i was already worried when i saw all the changes but wanted to give it a fair shot because again we are huge tmnt fans and raph as the leader made me happy because he has always been my fav. So it finally comes out and we watch the first episode. My first thoughts are it tries way to hard to be teen titans go. Then i see splinter and think wow they really ruined him. Even after all that there was still a few things i liked such as john cenas new bad guy i thought might give fresh life to the show and a whole new lot of action figures. Now we have watched them all and i cant help but wonder why. Why would they ruin tmnt like this. Every episode i tried so hard to convince myself to enjoy this show and just couldn't. I get that its format is aimed towards kids but this 10 min no story format is just sad. Tmnt has always been a great story for kids that showed working hard and training to overcome endless villains that were better armed and better fighters. The last series had just the right amount of action, story, and comedy that my kid loved it and i enjoyed it for the amazing story. This series has literally no story. They might as well just have anvils fall on their heads and tnt boxes and paint tunnels on walls that bad guys run into. This show is basicslly teen titans go meets loony tunes. Maybe kids like it but any parent that grew up watching this show that wants to enjoy it with their kids is gonna be greatly disappointed. If your child is older than a toddler i can't see them enjoying it becuse there is no meat to this just shiny colors and lame one liners with 0 story. This show is basically 10 min commericals for new toys. Very disappointed and sad they ruined my all time favorite heros

It's what you would call "kino", "peak fiction" even.
alfredomellagonzalez28 August 2020
At first when the trailers dropped it seemed like TMNT got the TTG treatement, and oh boy was i wrong.

If you happen to not be a fan of the TMNT and feel a bit intimidated that you probably would not understand it, don't be, this show is very friendly to new fans and casuals.

From episode one the show introduces you to it's fun snappy nature with fun dialogue, great use of limited animation, and does not waste time to flex the talented animators and artists working on it's crew, from amazing action scenes to more subtle character animation that makes it a joy to rewatch every episode and find fun visual gags or an intresting desing of a background character.

The voice acting is astounding, with great performances and hilarious line delivery, specially Josh Brener as Donnie and Ben Schwartz as Leo.

If you feel dissapointed that a charcater that was once great is now depicted as not so great, take in mind that this show is wants to differentiate itself from the others and will try to give a new point of view to the classic formula that every TMNT fan is familiar with, but remember, there is a reason to this, characters change, grow, adapt, and RISE.

While this show focuses more comedy, it's also not shy of an engaging story, the first few episodes work to set up the ground work for more big and dramatic episodes, even in the lighthearted fun episodes you will find elements that will come into play in the bigger story that it's telling

Sadly, as of the time that i'm writting this review, it doesn't look too bright for this show. Due to shady practices at Nickelodeon, the show was sabotaged, and was forced to finish it's story mid season 2 with the final 4 episodes, but not all hope has been lost...

next year there is a movie coming out on netflix, if you like it, be vocal about it, recommend it to a friend, post a review in social media, this show is like no other and there might not be anything like it again, do what you can to support it if you care. #Saverottmnt #Supportrottmnt

Great Animation, Mediocre Everything Else
I watched the first episode and a whole lot of short clips to get some sort of idea of what this show is trying to be. I've come to a conclusion:

It isn't as bad as people say it is.

Mind you, this this coming from an artist whose love of bright colors is only surpassed by his love of animation. I adore the art style of this show. The animation, the character designs, the color palette, the show is basically a moving comic. Some people say that the animation is too busy and that it's hard to actually grasp what's going on on the screen, and I really do get where they're coming from. I'd argue, though, that it's not actually that bad, nor that big of a deal. To me, it was a joy to watch, especially after getting used to the style.

Beyond the art style though, I don't have much praise to give. Nothing about the show strikes me as outright _bad_, only kind of mediocre. Something about it seems pandering, towards whom I don't know, but it feels more like a fluffy G-rated fanfiction than an actual show.

It's hard to judge the plot of a show after seeing so few episodes, especially since first episodes tend to be awkward and cumbersome to actually watch through, but it really isn't looking very good for the turtle brothers.

Even after all this, I'd still argue most people would, or at least should, enjoy watching the show, as long as you're _not_ expecting a deep narrative or something to feed your hunger for nostalgia. It deviates from almost everything TMNT has always been, though that's not automatically a bad thing.

You should give it a chance.

Yikes this is too much of a departure.
neurie25 July 2018
It's not a terrible show, it just isn't the TMNT.

After the last show which hit so many right beats and got down to the essence of teenage Turtles, this is show just seems to be like some one saw an episode of Samurai Jack, made the animation worse/jaggard, wanted to make it more street and throw the turtles on as a desk top.

It doesn't get any better after the first episode either, if anything it's starts to go down stereotypes that come close to being borderline.

Could only recommend to fans of off the wall animation, not to turtles fans.

I can see this series failing hard with the fans of the franchise.

Eastman and Laird should never have sold their property away if this is how the new owners will treat it.

It's not as bad as some critics want you to believe
emailrandom-686164 October 2019
Some fans have really been hard on this new iteration because change as a whole is not always taken in a good way. But this version is really praiseworthy, the animation, the comedy, the family bond as a whole, give it life. Some people have compared it to the like to Teen Titans Go, but that show wishes it could be this good, mainly for all the points above I mentioned and I get what some people are complaining about: the turtles and other characters have been fundamentally changed, but for me is not such a big deal. Listen, as big a franchise as TMNT is, radical differences between iterations is NOT A BAD THING, in my opinion it let's you appreciate more the different kind of stories that each version tries to convey. Rise of the TMNT is mainly episodic, BUT there is trace of a major plot unfolding, and it will surely deliver. Give it a chance, you can clearly feel the passion in this whole project, and the people making it are creating a beautiful tribute for this whole franchise.

I Liked It
gkapplespbkmous6 August 2018
Only seen the first episode, but it's alright. I got into TMNT through the 2012 reboot, and I still prefer that series. I'm sure people will hate it, and that's fine. It's not for everybody, but I think there is a lot going for it. It has great voice acting, fast animation, likable characters (not a fan of Donnie for the most part), and a unique concept. The mystical properties in the show are not what you'd expect, and it looks very impressive. I am going to watch this show, and see where it goes. A true fan shouldn't hate it for being different, they should hate it for being bad. So, check it out, and I'll leave the rest to you

Not what I hoped for...
laughongirl26 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the opening, and I was willing to give RTMNT a chance. I watched one of...three episodes, and I was hoping for the series to be great. Not so. I stopped on the third episode. It's purely comedy, there are eleven minute episodes, and its more for children - which is good for the kiddos, but this TMNT is far too goofy with random plots.

The characters all appear to be out of place. Splinter is fat, lazy, and rude. 'This' April is fun, but she is her own character...meaning she should have been a new character altogether. Nothing about this new April reminds me of any other April incarnation there was.

Raph is simply not leader material. The other turtles...it's hard to give a critique because as I said, these turtles are all out of character. I'm barely interested in watching the 4th episode. Just a huge disappointment.

Recommend This action packed while heartwarming show
carltonboom19 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
HONESTLY. This show has taken it' place in my heart rent free, some aren't fond with how much more comedic it is now. But I honestly find it great! They have their moments of seriousness, and at the perfect time, a little joke works it's way through. And the atmosphere isn't as heavy as the previous.

I can't even begin on the team and their personalities, finally- it feels like every team member is just as important as another. And their personalities have depth! I honestly loved the 2012-2017 show, but it often felt as thought Leo was always the one in the light, or Leo and Raph being the only 'important' members of the team. While Donnie and Mikey usually stood in the background.

Going back to earlier with 'depth'- now that they all hold more than 1 characteristic, their so much more interesting. Their appearances are unique as well, with very noticeable differences. But Raph is not just a full fledged ticking-time-bomb 24/7, he hold true compassion and emotion, and to me he just has that blissful, utter confusion makes the big 'tough guy' so adorable. I also love the idea of him being leader, definitely suits him. Donnie, oh thank GOD he has more depth than 2012-2017 Donnie did. He isn't just some desperate helpless nerd (no offense), he has that confident, sarcastic, sassy attitude a lot and god that is just what he needed. Thank you for that. The soft-shell also added a nice touch. Kind of shows they all have their weaknesses. I'm glad they kept that nerd, master-machinery science characteristic though. Donnie isn't Donnie without that. And the sharpie eyebrows? Dare I say more. MIKEY, Mikey; my turtle. I'm glad he kept that young, adorable, artistic theme with him, but now he isn't just a lost cause!! He isn't so clueless- and I love the way yiu portrayed him honestly, I don't even know what to say. You even managed to change his weapon into something more childish and Mikey like. Love it. Leo, honestly- I can't get my point across enough, thank god for the change in attitude, other Leo was getting annoying, it isn't Leo-central anymore. And that cocky, layed back attitude always lightens my mood, always striving the winner. Him and Donnie make a good disaster-twins duo. Ok, April has to be mentioned, she is so much better. The last one- which I'm sure Nickelodeon didn't actually do purposely; acted quite toxic, and manipulative. Always playing between Donnie and Casey. She is so cool in rottmnt version, everyone I've asked also agrees. I can't even describe her, but she's the girl we all want to be. Trust me. Splinter- In complete honesty, at first I didn't know WHAT to think. I was disappointed. But gradually I've started to enjoy him a lot more, he isn't portrayed as 'perfect' in this like the old Splinter was, far from it, I do wish he appeared a bit less pathetic at times though. But I guess- in a comedic way, that's what nick went for? Not sure, but I promise you'll get somewhat used to him as episodes fly by. I think this is long enough already, but I just can't stop talking- last thing, a lot of people at first glance were uncomfortable with the change in style, it went from 3D realistic-ish, to 2D full cartoon, I was exactly the same! I wasn't fond, but now I am in LOVE! I've actually grown to prefer it a lot more. All in all- thank you for this show. And I hope to see more of it. I RECOMMEND PEOPLE. I RECOMMEND!

A new take on a beloved franchise
NinjaTurtleGaga21 January 2019
I've been a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for over 30 years now and with every reboot my love for the turtle boys grows. I was overjoyed when a new series was announced after the amazing 2012 series ended and awaited details with baited breath. However, when the first details were released and the shift in team roles and personalities were reveleaed (my fav Leo was no longer going to be the leader) my instant reaction was 'No!' In my mind, the change was too much and it would no longer be the show I loved. When the official artwork was released, I liked the style and design of each turtle but I was still hung up on my initial, knee jerk reaction. However, I love this franchise so much, I owed it at least a try and was determined to watch a few episodes. And boy, was I glad I did!! After just the first episode I was hooked!! It was colourful and pleasing to the eye, the action/fight scenes are smooth, electric and had me wanting more. And the humour is brilliant! Yeah it's a bit cheesy at times but more often than not it has me laughing and smiling. As for the shift in team roles/dynamics, it's clear from the start this is only temporary. This show is truly 'Rise' of the turtles, before they become ninja masters. The turtles are just kids, learning their way and role in the world. And they're having fun while they do. It's a refreshing take on a known story, you could even see it as a prequel to any of the other series'. Whenever I watch this show, I feel like I'm a kid again, quickly catching an episode of my favourite show before I head of for school and then excitedly talking with my friends about it; and at the end of the day, is there a better feeling a cartoon can invoke?

This show will not be to everyone's taste, and that is 100% fine. The joy and brilliance of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle franchise is it is whatever you want in to be!! And there's something for everyone; cartoons, movies, comics, video games, toys!! You'll always find a version you like but whatever you pick, we're all united by our love of 4 Turtle Boys 🐢🐢🐢🐢

First Unwatchable Ninja Turtles
drew-seman22 July 2018
This is the first mutation of the TMNY that my 4 yr old doesn't like. And she's right.

The animation is incredibly distracting to watch, but the writing/acting is the really problem. Every line and every character is trying to be the funny one. Mike, Don, Leo, and splinter are all trying to be the dumb funny one. So there is no one for them to play off of. The result is dialogue that sounds like an endless series of one liners rather than characters that actually talk to each other. The character variety that creates interpersonal dynamics is what makes the show in all previous iterations... or as my 4 yr old put it "why is everyone always talking so loud?"

A Fantastic New Take on the Ninja Turtles
Icepalette22 September 2018
Every Ninja Turtles remake is going to be a little different. I was skeptical when I first saw the new character designs (months before it came out) because the brothers were different species of turtles from each other, with different weapons, and I was afraid that since Donatello was SO obviously tech-ed up and a soft-shell, that he'd just be behind-the-scenes-IT-guy and not fight much. It's not like that at all, though!

Rise is a beautiful contrast to the previous 2012 and 2003 series. It takes brighter and very aesthetically pleasing colors into character designs as well as the backgrounds. The style is different and refreshing. The action/fighting animations are also exciting and energetic.

As for the brothers' personalities, the creators did a FANTASTIC job! They took the extremes from the previous series and created a better BALANCE. That angsty, responsible Leo with a katana up his butt you saw from 2003 and 2012? Nope. He's still shown strong leadership/analytical qualities in Rise, but you get to see him having fun AS A TEENAGER and not be 100% serious.

Angry Raph with no fuse that fights all the time with Leo? Not really. In Rise, he's still quick to rush into a fight, but it's not super-angry-like, and he shows his lovable nature more prominently. He's the leader (because he's the oldest) and has to take more responsibility in this series, and it honestly works really well with the family-dynamic. His brothers look up to him and do tease him a little, but it's with a very modern, loving-sibling-like attitude.

Mikey is still the youngest, but he's not overly annoying and not, as so many people put it, "the dumb one." He's "the artist" of the group, and you can also see the energetic-younger-sibling side of him. He's the super nice, soft-hearted and playful one. It's adorable how you can see him climbing over all his brothers so casually all the time.

Donnie isn't completely dorky or placed more in the background in comparison to the other brothers. He's good for more than just his inventions! In the first episode, it was great to see him so engaged and capable when fighting! His intelligence is still prominent, but they introduced a more pronounced, dry, sarcastic humor to accompany it.

A lot of people have complained that they're all "Mikeys" or "dumb ones" now. But that's just because they all have a youthful, humorous side to them! The personalities are still pretty traditional to each turtle, but it's in a more realistic light! I mean, you can't really expect only one sibling to have a modern sense of humor, or to really like movies! These are supposed to be teenagers! For a kids show! It's lighthearted so far, and enjoyable if you can just stop yourself from expecting it to be a continuation of previous series. Also, April O'neil is an awesome, spunky, sassy sister to the turtles! She's basically family and is just as ready to jump into a fight as they are! 10/10. Side note: The voice acting is great, too. Great casting.

There's no substance, lackluster, boring story execution. Complete let down.
marilujero31 October 2018
The jokes are boring, the episode plots sound very interesting but are executed poorly. Some of the turtle cast dont have memorable voices, they sound so average. The colors are brilliant! But that doesn't make up for how dissapointing the show is overall. Its like every moment needs to be bleeding comedy but with zero of the charisma. I honestly do enjoy some key changes like the turtle species change and how details from the classic comics are used in this new show but so far its not enough to make me want to buy the merchandize and no other child in my large family (and relatives) have turtle merch on their Christmas list, which is very disappointing. I first saw the turtles when I was in middle school and now that I'm an adult I was excited over the reboot of my favorite childhood show, its the perfect opportunity to bond with my siblings and kid cousins about my favorite reptiles but the show is so boring that not a single kid in my family will dare watch this show with me. Utter dissatisfaction, at least there's way past older versions of this show I could watch, Ill be skipping the 2018 show and go watch reruns of previous reboots.

Fresh take on a classic
stephaniepiericklewis19 August 2019
I grew up watching both the 2003 series, the 2012 series, and the movies in between. I love the whole tmnt universe and despite the change that the rise writers took, I adore this incarnation as much-if not more- than the past ones. The boys get the chance to have a childhood not being raised in the strict regime of ninjutsu, they are more fleshed out in that they all aren't forced into a specific role in the family.

Raphael is not just the "hot head" he's now the over protective, caring, animal loving, and brash 15 year old snapping turtle and self appointed leader. He openly is very protective of his little brothers and his new weapons powers get properly activated by his love for them.

Donatello isnt simply the "brains" (though he is still vastly intelligent) he is an impulsive, stubborn, dramatic, sarcastic and determined 14 year old soft shell who is trying to compensate his shell with over the top inventions.

Leonardo no longer is the "fearless leader"- though he is still fearless- he is finally given the chance to be fleshed out and developed as a character. He gets to be a stubborn, impulsive, witty, sassy, kinda egotistical, 14 year old red eared slider who despite now being the third eldest, still loves his brothers. Despite this, he still has come up with several plans in the midst of a fight.

Michelangelo finally has been freed from his prison of being the "comic relief" "wild one" or "stereotypical adhd" (which was harmful in my opinion as someone WITH adhd). He's still the baby of the family, but he's been fleshed out to be a talented chef, acrobat and painter. He also is stubborn, excitable, sometimes a bit too blunt, a 'softy', but also has a temper that's a force to be reckoned with. He acts like a normal 13 year old boy- despite being a box turtle living in the sewers- following his big brothers faithfully, but also wanting to be independent.

The creators take on splinter has caused some controversy but after seeing his backstory you understand why he is the way he is. Before anyone says something how "Kevin Eastman wouldn't like this" just know that Eastman actually LOVES this take. Change is inevitable, and this change is something that needs time to adjust to, but its time this series got a new fresh take.

You have to get past the first episode. Open mind!
taylorpageau9 August 2018
Its not bad. I like the animation. I like the villains. The animation has a very action-based, explosive , dynamic theme. The change from the usual TMNT show take some getting used to. This show is nothing like we're used to seeing in TMNT. If you open your mind and can get past the first episode it looks like it's going to be a fun change. I've watched TMNT my entire life. The main thing I like about this show its the less serious take on TMNT. The villains are very creative and comical. The main characters have a funny spin on there personalities. The best advice I can give you is dont take the show too seriously. Give it a shot , and don't let your past experiences stop you from enjoying the show.

Best Turtles Remake

I have loved the turtles since the first 87 cartoon and growing up with it I was mad when I initially saw this show and how it was and I had low hopes for it being good. But the turtle fan in me decided to give it a try and after about 2 episodes I was hooked the animation style is incredible and visually stunning. The Story line is all over in season 1 but season 2 and 3 are pretty on point in building a story. The show is incredible about doing justice to the franchise and bringing the humor of the live action turtles from the 90's with a modern spin on it if the turtles were pre teens in todays society. As a adult the 87 cartoon doesn't seem to hold up as well as I believe this one will. Im excited to see if they do a continuation of the series It really has been the most enjoyable turtles series ever.

Its a good for some mindless fun. . . not much for anything else

I went into the show expecting the "Teens titans GO!" of the TMNT franchise, and what I got was. . . Okay I guess. the show definitely isn't as good as any of the others in the franchise and definitely has nothing on its original. However the show has some pretty redeemable moments. I would be lying if I said the show didn't actually make me chuckle from time to time, and most of the fight scenes were pretty badass, but when the show fails. . . IT FAILS! if you are looking for a serious continuation of the TMNT franchise this is not for you. However if you just want mindless fun pr something to keep a child distracted for a decent while, then I guess you will find some enjoyment out of this show.

Very Dissapointing

Considering how great the 2012-2017 series was, I considered this show would follow in its footsteps. Instead, it went the complete opposite, and I couldn't bring myself to watch any of the other episodes after the first. It departs too far from other TMNT shows.

I love this show an inordinate amount. Everything about it from the humor, art style and characters just makes me smile. It's easily one of my favorite shows of all time and I can't recommend it enough.
