Ricard Claus and Karsten Kiilerich’s kids and family animated feature “Panda Bear in Africa” is continuing its long journey and heading to France (Le Pacte), Switzerland (Praesens) and the Benelux territories (WW Entertainment) after a raft of sales by the film’s sales agent Cinema Management Group. In early fall, it will also release in the Middle East (Front Row Entertainment), Poland (Kino Świat), Portugal (Films4You) and Turkey (Filmarti).
Screening in this year’s Annecy Presents section at the French festival, the film focuses on Pang, a young panda bear who is best friends with Jielong, a young female dragon.
While playing with Jielong in the bamboo forest, Pang is abducted by an African baboon and a “hilariously dimwitted” crocodile. Pang’s journey to save his best friend will take him far away from his home in China, all the way to the southern tip of Africa.

Ikiru Films, Tinglado Film (“Ona”) and Anangu Grup (“Mummies”) are readying David Baute’s “Black Butterflies” (“Mariposas Negras”), an animated climate exodus film three years in the making that illustrates the journey of three women fleeing uninhabitable terrain towards new lives that prove far from welcoming. The trials and tribulations of each are relayed via 2D renderings.
“I’m thrilled to be producing David Baute’s “Black Butterflies” with Tinglado Film, Anangu Grup and Tunche Films. It’s a global tale necessary to relay, with the focus placed on people whose tragedies are largely unknown to our society,” asserted Ikiru Films founder, Edmon Roch.
Sharing an exclusive first look image with Variety, he adds, “The World Bank projects that climate change will drive 143 million people in Latin America, Africa, and South Asia alone to leave their homes by 2050. Most of them come from poor regions that have contributed little to global warming.

In Dec. 2018, two years after he had picked up “Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon” at the first edition of Ventana Sur’s Animation!, Edward Noeltner’s Cinema Management Group (Cmg) announced he had pre-sold it to over half the planet. Further deals followed with Signature for the U.K. and Rialto for Australia/New Zealand.
Even before Covid-19 struck, independent movies’ worldwide sales roll-outs were getting increasingly rare. It’s one thing, moreover, for titles to sell, another for them to register any kind of real impact at the box office.

With school holidays ending and only a smattering of new releases in the market, the national box office plunged last weekend to the lowest point since mid-August 2020.
According to Numero, total receipts for all films tallied just $2 million. Some $1.8 million of that came from the top 20 titles, a result that is down almost 48 per cent on the previous weekend.
The last time the figures were so low, cinemas were only just emerging from the first wave of lockdowns, ahead of the release of Tenet.
This weekend will hopefully see a pick-me-up, with all cinemas in Nsw finally able to open at 75 per cent capacity. This includes the Sydney market, which has been closed since late June. Cinemas in Melbourne, parts of regional Victoria and the Act remain closed.

Amid very few new releases, school holidays are thankfully providing welcome foot traffic for exhibitors, with almost every title getting a boost at the box office last weekend.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Free Guy and Paw Patrol: The Movie continue to lead the Bo, with notable boosts also seen for Ainbo: Amazon Princess, Space Jam: A New Legacy and Jungle Cruise.
Cinemas in Sydney and Melbourne remain closed, in addition to areas of regional Victoria, Nsw and the Act. However, Nsw exhibitors are set to reopen for fully vaccinated patrons October 11, while the Victorian roadmap is scheduled for October 26.
Majestic Cinemas CEO Kieren Dell, who has sites across regional Nsw and Queensland, describes the weekend as “lacklustre”, but is optimistic about the market picking up towards the end of the year.

While family audiences finally have a little more variety at cinemas by way of Paw Patrol: The Movie and Ainbo: Amazon Princess, neither new release were a match for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Free Guy at the box office last weekend.
Paramount’s Paw Patrol: The Movie opened at no. 3, ringing up $235,097 from 173 screens. Paid previews on the title have been running since August 21, so in total the animated feature is on $956,192.
The result has helped the film cross $US100 million ($137.8 million) worldwide, following openings in territories such as the UK August 9 and North America August 22, where it was simultaneously released on Paramount+.
Considering Rialto’s Ainbo: Amazon Princess is not based on established IP like Paw Patrol, its opening weekend of $105,464 from 143 locations is a decent result, seeing it premiere in sixth position.

A panel of top animation professionals gathered in Cannes has underlined how festivals can help to promote a new generation of socially engaged animation films.
“It is one of the main launching pads for this very specific kind of film, which needs that kind of exposure. We have such strong industries in Europe, especially in France, and we need that exposure from the A-list festivals,” said panel member Eleanor Coleman, head of animation and new media acquisitions at Indie Sales, the Paris-based outfit that sold the Oscar-nominated “My Life as a Zucchini” around the world after it premiered in the Cannes sidebar Directors’ Fortnight in 2016.
According to Mexican producer-director Miguel Uriegas, the co-founder of Fotosintesis Media, which produces what he calls “cause driven” entertainment in Latin America, the major challenge is to make these films “sexy” at the distribution stage.
