Shah Rukh Khan is Stupendous in Anand L. Rai's uneven Romantic-Drama!
namashi_124 February 2019
Some ideas sound exciting on paper, but they don't always end up working on the big-screen. Such is the case for Anand L. Rai's mega-budgeted misfire 'ZERO', a film full of exciting ideas, but with only a few that land perfectly on ground. Despite its blemishes, the film rises on the strength of its leading-man - Shah Rukh Khan. The veteran is superb.

'ZERO' Synopsis: Bauua Singh (Shah Rukh Khan), a vertically challenged man, who is full of charm and wit, with a pinch of arrogance and big dreams, finds himself crushed between two very different women, who interrupt his easy going lifestyle.

'ZERO' is about Bauua's struggle with Dwarfism and his flaky attitude towards life. And to give Writer Himanshu Sharma his much due credit, 'ZERO' begins with a BANG! The first-hour of 'ZERO' is flat-out fabulous. I liked Bauua's initial romance with Aafia Yusufzai Bhinder (Anushka Sharma), a scientist with cerebral palsy. The cocky romance between the two is nicely done, with some moments standing out. The problems in 'ZERO' begin massively post-intermission and sadly, the problems don't end. The entire sub-plot involving Bauua meeting his celebrity idol Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif) is devoid of excitement. And the final act, involving a mission to mars, is unconvincing and adds to the film's length. In short, 'ZERO' has a winning first-hour, but a disappointing second, that plays a spoilsport.

Himanshu Sharma's Screenplay works till the interval, but falls apart just after. Also, 'ZERO' feels a little too long at a 150-minutes! The film needed some trimming, for sure! Anand L. Rai's Direction has flashes of credible creativity, but is overall done away due to an uneven Screenplay. Manu Anand's Cinematography is quite good, while Hemal Kothari's Editing needed more crispness. Ajay-Atul's Score is top-notch. Art & Costume Design are satisfactory. Visual Effects are effective.

Performance-Wise: Shah Rukh is in great form. Now rightly regarded as a Veteran, the charismatic star sinks his teeth into the part and portrays the hugely flawed dwarf to perfection. This performance definitely ranks amongst his best works to date. Anushka Sharma is less impressive, as the usually terrific performer struggles to portray a difficult part. Katrina Kaif is a pleasant surprise. She enacts the self-destructive celebrity with true feeling. In supporting roles, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is excellent as Bauua's friend and Brijendra Kala shines once again as a matrimonial agent. Abhay Deol and R. Madhavan are wasted in cameos.

On the whole, 'ZERO' aims high, but only succeeds partially.

A weird, disastrous film
asokandanny24 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Zero was a weird film. Like REALLY WEIRD. It's not as bad as Race 3 (which made me stop watching Hindi movies for 6 months), but it's not groundbreaking either. Which is a shame really, because Shah Rukh Khan can do better films than this.

Shah Rukh Khan really had energy in his performance. Even though he's 53, he still has the energy that makes me smile. 😃 Surprisingly, Katrina Kaif was far better than Anushka Sharma. In my opinion, Anushka's acting was a bit over-the top. Others were fine I guess. (SRK's friend, played by Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub was a laugh riot! Perfect comic timing and the brightest spot of the film.)

Story was a letdown. It was an old-people romance, The Martian copy and Bollywood Insider unevenly mashed up into one. SRK, I know you're the king of romance. But why go back to garbage lover-boy films that don't work anymore? Find a new niche. You can easily play a romance mentor (like in Dear Zindagi), or even something innovative that doesn't involve romance. Zero may have been innovative, but it wasn't a good risk at all. If you wanted to do an astronaut film, you should have just stuck to that rather than mix it with small-town romance and B-town scandal.

The only saving grace of the film is its soundtrack, which easily contains the best songs of the year. "Mere Naam Tu", "Issaqbaazi" and "Husn Parcham" are songs that will really give you earworms and stick with you long after the film ends. However, the film is disastrous as a whole. It's better to stream it instead of paying for a ticket.

You can wait!
shaikrizwan12323 December 2018
I am going to make this a concise review as possible.

I went inside the theatre with no expectations because that's how you can enjoy a movie.

The first half is spectacular with all the characters established and you look forward for a 2nd half, that's when my expectations grew.

Cometh second half, piece by piece is taken away and you're sitting there thinking to yourself what has happened.

Seriously?
amber-5743829 December 2018
Who thought this would make a good film? None of the people working on the film ever had this thought? I had to walk out during the second half because of how absurd it was

Shah Rukh Khan Is The Only Saving Grace In This Otherwise Terrible Meerut-Mars Journey Film
ketgup8322 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So much was expected from the first collaboration between Aanand L Rai and Shah Ruk Khan in Zero but you will feel let down after watching this 2 hours 44 minutes film on a Meerut-Mars journey that fails to take off.

Zero tells the story of vertically challenged, Bauua Singh (Shah Rukh Khan) who is about to get married to a physically disabled, Aafia Bhinder (Anushka Sharma), a NASA scientist suffering with cerebral palsy. However, Bauua betrays Aafia and chases the bold and beautiful actress Babita Kumar (Katrina Kaif), only to realize that he has actually fallen in love with Aafia and wants her back at any cost.

From the man who gave blockbusters like Tanu Weds Manu, Raanjhanaa and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Aanand L Rai is directing Zero and so much was expected from him. Even the trailer of Zero, which was unveiled on 2nd November had smashed all the records in YouTube since it release, becoming the #1 trending item on the channel. With this, the curiosity to watch the film almost doubled. Unfortunately, you will be shocked when you see the film in theater. The film opens with a bang introducing Bauua Singh and his friend (brilliantly played by Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) , confrontation with his father (Tigmanshu Dhulia) which will definitely bring down the house, coupled with tuneful songs, especially the brilliant choreographed "Mere Naam Tu". All these elements will help you sail you through the first half of the film smoothly. However, something happens in the second half and the story goes haywire and too much disruptions causes the film to halt and it never recovers. The screenplay becomes so weak that you might even a take a small nap in between the scenes. Aanand L Rai is definitely not in form and he has disappointed big time with Zero (main reason for me to watch this film) as he defines his characters in the film with so much depth and details (remember the characters of Pappi Ji , Raja Awasthi, Payal and Jassi from Tanu Weds Manu Returns). Writing from Himanshu Sharma (again he was brilliant in Tanu Weds Manu franchise and Ranjhanna) is weak in Zero which does not create any impact at all. Technically, Zero is very good with superb art direction, lovely cinematography and stunning visual effects along with good background score (Ajay -Atul)

The only saving grace in this film is Shah Rukh Khan. I have been writing in my previous reviews (especially FAN), Shah Rukh Khan has the energy and potential but he is choosing the script which is taking away his credit as an actor. In Zero, you cannot imagine anyone apart from Shah Rukh Khan playing the character so aptly. He gets into the character of Bauua Singh with so much ease as if he is playing a real character. Anushka Sharma does well but in few places could have been better. Katrina Kaif was surprisingly good while Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub was just mind-blowing.

Overall, the journey of Zero from Meerut-Mars will be a forgettable one . It is a big opportunity gone wasted. Below average 2/5

Justified title
rubber_rice21 December 2018
This will be very disappointing to the huge fan base of srk including me. Plot is quite poor with unrealistic built. As the movie progress it'll get you into more disbelief. Tho it starts with huge entrainment, the fun ride doesn't last till the end. As we seen from the past movies srk second half of the movie just let's the whole movie down same with this movie. Totally it's just dissatisfaction led after been expecting from the Anand and srk combo been not going well.

Entertaining and DIFFERENT movie by SRK each time
dijaa-3228522 December 2018
Great movie, great cast, great plot all about embracing the incompleteness in each one of us and beleiving that only the sky is our limit, in this film it's even beyond space not just the sky. The movie sure is different especially in the second half but isn't that what we were expecting from SRK : DIFFERENT. But each time as Fans and as vieweres we complain that we want something different from him but with each different movie he drops, we find people saying that it's not as good as ddlj, kkhh or k3g... It's a different experience, he can't make this kind of movies all his life, he's evolving and as fans we should encourage him for that... Overall it's a mesmerizing movie and great experience with entertainment, laughter, drama, space ...You should definitely go watch it in cinema.

Ambitious and Flawed with Terrific Performances
nandidot22 December 2018
When I walked out of the theatre after watching 'Zero' I wasn't sure how I felt about the movie. To be honest, I still don't. What I can say for sure is that it's the best Shah Rukh Khan movie to come out in the last many years. That's not much of a compliment considering the disasters we've been subjected to for so long. But it's a welcome change.

Bauaa Singh, a 4 foot 6 inch tall man with the confidence of a rockstar, lives life grandly. The world is cruel to people like him, he knows this and owns it. He's arrogant, cocky, and a heartbreaker. What then makes the brilliant Aafia fall for him...well, no one romances like Mr. Khan. We've known that for decades. Bauaa uses everything in his power to woo the girl and us along with her. But can a man of his nature really change...

At times it felt like I was watching two different movies. One in the streets of Meerut where songs like mere naam tu can woo the most stubborn of hearts and one where a single planet isn't enough to express your sorrow. We also have a heartbroken diva in the mix who is amused and eventually saved by this short and unforgettable man. A lot of things work in this concoction. The supporting cast is spot on. The belt wielding father, the doting but mouthy mother, the ride or die best friend. Everyone has a part to play and they play it well. And the best is kept for the stars. No pun intended.

Anushka Sharma has had a terrific year and she caps it off with her best performance. You feel for her but not out of pity; she's no pushover. Her wheelchair and disability are treated like character traits not hindrances and Ms. Sharma nails it as the strong willed Aafia. I was pleasantly surprised by Katrina Kaif's act. Ms. Kaif puts up a strong performance, one that hits close to home. Her Babita Kumari quickly won me over and I was rooting for her in that cracker of a last scene she had. Shah Rukh Khan is excellent and at his very best. Height aside, he's a man with many flaws. You like him and hate him at the same time and Mr. Khan plays to his audience like only he can.

Aanand L. Rai's previous projects, particularly 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns', were better than this but what he lacks in coherence he makes up for in vision. It's an unusual idea with a ton of potential but the writing isn't up to the mark. The screenplay is erratic. There are several memorable moments but the overall package isn't as impactful as you'd like.

All said and done, Zero is an ambitious film with impressive performances and some quality CGI. There are a couple of melodious musical numbers and some inspired dialogue writing. And it's all packaged in shining wrapping paper. Yet there's something missing. A touch of brilliance, perhaps...or a dash of charm. Maybe the ache of a breaking heart. The 'X' factor, as they say, is just not there.

And Mr. Khan, the hurt caused by years of disappointment won't be easily forgotten. There was a time when one waited with bated breath for an SRK movie, now we walk in with fingers crossed. This one paid off more than the rest. I guess that's saying something.

A movie for blind fans of srk. Songs are boring. This is not a srk movie. Definition of love and romance is changed now. A very poor movie, save your money. Second Worst movie of the year after TOH.

Amazing Acting
partharoy199622 December 2018
Forget what the Critic is saying. According to me, this is one of the best movie of SRK of this decade. Amazing acting, beautiful songs & a brilliant story. Climax was not so good. But this movie is worth watching.

Half-man is double man in attitude and wit!!!
jaydeepthakur21 December 2018
First half and initial part of second half is so awwwwwsome 10/10. Haven't laughed this much during a movie in years. Second half is stretched and feels less relevant and less funny. Such good graphics is rare for a bollywood movie. Acting is top notch 10 for Srk, 11 for Anushka and 8 for Katrina. Songs are adequate and well adapted. Story is average because of second half. It's a good one-time watch. A must watch for SRK fans.

Thumbs down for remaking Jab Tak hai Jaan part 2
abhineet15021 December 2018
It's just a sequel to JTHJ with characters changed along with story.

1st half is good but 2nd half forced me to exit the hall but since I paid for the movie had to watch it till the end.

Love birds and youth teenager will definitely like the movie and blow whistle.

But Bollywood need to grow up and rise above the love stories.

Overall it's only 1 time watch.Better to watch it at home in TV after few months.

bishalmanna21 December 2018
Film has been hyped a lot, but again it is a standard affair of srk movies. Silly romance and the illogical plot of meerut to Mars was too much to swallow. The 2nd half is abhorish which should basically not exist. But fans are trying hard to support their star.
