For the second time this year, two original, non-franchise movies, “Night School” (Universal) and “Smallfoot” (Warner Bros.), opened to over $20 million. The last time two originals topped the box office was last spring, with “A Quiet Place” and “Blockers.”
This yielded the first weekend since Labor Day to improve over the same dates last year ($102 million total gross compared to $90 million in 2017). Grosses for the year continue their strong increase — just under nine percent (six percent up in ticket sales) — as weekends like this help to guarantee an uptick for the whole year.

Early read here on Universal’s Night School which is tracking for a $9.5M opening day and a weekend that’s between $27M-$29M. While $30M would be a sweet take, that’s still an impressive number in these times for a comedy, Uni had the previous best opening this year with its R-rated teen pic Blockers at $20.6M.
Warner Bros. animated pic Smallfoot will own second with a $6M Friday (a few cents more than their 2016 Storks $5.7M opening day), and a three-day that’s between $20M and $22.5M. Two films in the final weekend of September, opening to $20M, seriously, exhibitors aren’t complaining especially with this month on track to be the second best ever with around $621M after last year’s record $698.5M.

Before 2018, Little Women wasn't exactly suffering for onscreen adaptations. There was the silent 1918 Paramount film, George Cukor's 1933 version, the 1949 Technicolor adaptation and 1994's star-studded iteration, not to mention at least 12 versions made for television.
So why, this year, is Louisa May Alcott's 1868 family story experiencing an onscreen renaissance? Consider the adaptations that have just been released, or are about to be: In May, PBS aired the BBC's fourth adaptation of the book, a three-part miniseries starring Angela Lansbury, Emily Watson and Maya Hawke. Clare Niederpruem’s adaptation of “Little Women” is billed as “the first-ever modern cinematic retelling of the classic story.” (Apparently they’re not counting the 2012 TV movie “The March Sisters at Christmas.”) This sounds like a promising approach; Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel was published 150 years ago, yet it remains as relevant as ever.
Alcott’s books grappled with the place of girls and women (and also boys and men) in the world, so there will always be room for thoughtful adaptations of her work. Indeed, this year brought a well-received miniseries to PBS, and Greta Gerwig is currently working on an interpretation starring Saoirse Ronan and Meryl Streep. Plus, of course, parents still show kids their own favorite versions, from 1933, 1949 and 1994.
But these efforts reflected a crucial understanding missing from Niederpruem’s feature debut: that we are all Jo. The girls in this contemporary retelling — which was produced...

Last weekend ended up being the worst overall weekend of the year so far with all films on Mojo's weekend chart totaling a mere $91.8 million with the top twelve grossing just over $81 million. This weekend, however, should find the top twelve alone combining to bring in over $100 million as the month is shaping up to be the second highest grossing September ever, just behind last year's record performance for the month. A pair of newcomers are expected to finish #1 and #2 for the weekend, beginning with Universal's comedy Night School followed by the Warner Bros. animated title Smallfoot. Additional new releases include Lionsgate's release of the CBS horror-thriller Hell Fest and Pinnacle Peak's Little Women opening in a moderate number of locations. What would the world of the March sisters look like in the contemporary era? Such is the concept behind Clare Niederpruem’s misguided take on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel “Little Women.” Released between last year’s well-received three-episode PBS miniseries and Greta Gerwig’s upcoming star-studded feature, Niederpruem’s debut will be remembered as a curiosity amongst otherwise stellar adaptations. Niederpruem, who adapted the book with Kristi Shimek, clearly has great affection for Alcott’s indelible sisters, but her film never goes beyond placing them in a contemporary setting and simply hoping for the best.
While there’s certainly room to explore Alcott’s biggest themes in the lives of modern women, here the results feel more hammy than revelatory. Sweet scenes in Alcott’s book are now suddenly weird and outdated, and only serve as uncomfortable evidence of the film’s poor execution. The intrusion of modern idioms also stings,...

When characters cry on screen, but the audience doesn’t cry in their seats, there’s a problem. Unfortunately, it’s not the only problem in director Clare Niederpruem’s “Little Women.” This contemporary adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s enduring classic is certainly admirable in its attempt to give the material a modern spin. However, what’s new only serves to frustrate and detract from the reasons why this material has been beloved for generations.
Niederpruem, along with co-writer (and editor) Kristi Shimek, updates Alcott’s source material with an unnecessary framing device in which present-day twentysomething Jo March (Sarah Davenport) is attempting to make her mark by writing an unforgettable novel. Can you guess what that novel will eventually be?
Jo was once a young girl yearning to “do all the things”, such as travel the world and be a playwright. Now, she’s just a frustrated fantasy-fiction writer,...

Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish are hoping that big laughs equal big bucks when “Night School” opens this weekend. Before the comedic duo can claim box office victory, however, they’ll have to fend off one adorable Yeti.
Universal’s “Night School” is eyeing a debut between $27 million and $35 million from 2,900 theaters. The film reunites Haddish with “Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee and producer Will Packer. The PG-13 comedy finds Haddish playing an unorthodox teacher helping Hart get his Ged. If estimates hold, the launch of “Night School” looks to be on par with “Girls Trip’s” $30 million start. That raunchy comedy became a sleeper hit, grossing over $140 million worldwide off its $19 million budget. “Night School” has a slightly higher price tag at $29 million.

Lee-directed feature Night School which is set to ace a $30M-plus opening; the highest debut for a comedy, well, since last July’s Girls Trip ($31.2M) which was also directed by Lee and repped a record debut for the director at the B.O.
When it comes to comedy stars, moviegoers like a discovery, and that’s Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish and she’s paired with one of the few box office stars who can actually still make it work on the big screen, Kevin Hart.
That pop for comedies is also a boost for this September’s turnstiles which is shaping up to be the second-best ever with an estimated U.S./Canada gross of...

Hello and happy Monday everyone, Jason from Mnpp here with another edition of our "Beauty vs Beast" series - Louisa May Alcott's book Little Women just turned 150 this year and it's hotter than it's ever been. There was a BBC version with Maya Hawke and Emily Watson and Angela Lansbury that aired here in the Us in the spring. Then this very weekend there's a modernized retelling hitting theaters. And then of course the one sucking all the air out of the room - Greta Gerwig's all-star edition set for next year, whose cast is so stacked we'd be here all day if I try listing off everybody - just look at the IMDb page.
Anyway a lot of us (even if we're excited to see all of those actors in one place and under her direction) aren't entirely sure why Greta's making this new version - not...

One thing was clear after “Beautiful Boy” made its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival: Timothée Chalamet is a “shoo-in” to earn his second career Oscar nomination, this time for best supporting actor (so says IndieWire’s awards editor Anne Thompson). The 22 year old stars opposite Steve Carell in this true story drama that marks the English-language debut of Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”).
“Beautiful Boy” is based on the memoirs written by Nic Sheff and his father, David Sheff. Chalamet stars as the former, a teenager who spirals into meth addiction. Carell plays David, who struggles to reach out to his son and turn his addiction around. The supporting cast includes Amy Ryan and Maura Tierney.
IndieWire’s Eric Kohn praised the “powerful” and “haunting” performances by Chalamet and Carell in his review out of Tiff. Chalamet was nominated for his first Oscar...

Closing night in Toronto brought Justin Kelly’s low-budget indie labor of love, “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” which lured two bankable actresses with its twisted but true tale of mistaken author/avatar identity. Dern flew to Toronto from filming “Little Women” and Stewart from the set of “Charlie’s Angels” to help Kelly sell the movie in Toronto. The filmmakers wanted to screen “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy” to friendly Tiff fans in order to land some upbeat reactions. (Metascore: 63.)
“This is as independent as it can get,” said Dern on the phone from the Tiff press day. “If a distributor gives Justin the time and love he needs to shape it, it’s about being able to finesse a thing we made on a shoestring.”
Clearly, both actresses rolled up their sleeves on set. When extras didn’t arrive in late ’90s-early ’00s period clothing, Dern and Stewart threw T-shirts on them...

Emma Stone isn’t on Instagram, and that’s not okay with Billy Eichner.
The comedian, in the Thursday return of his Emmy-nominated series “Billy on the Street,” hits, well, the streets of Manhattan to ask New Yorkers if and when Stone will ever join the popular photo-sharing app.
Surprisingly, most of the interviewees are pretty mellow when they meet Stone, the “bubble tea of humans,” as Eichner puts it. But still, some are incredulous when they find out she’s Mia on Instagram, since “everything and everyone is on it,” according to one young woman. Another insists Stone get on it so she can “show people where you are, obviously.”

Netflix's Sierra Burgess Is a Loser has a cast jam-packed with recognizable faces. Its leading lady, Shannon Purser, was one of the breakout stars of the streaming platform's Stranger Things, playing fan favorite Barb. The requisite dorky-jock-dreamboat, Jamey, is portrayed by the internet's current boyfriend, Noah Centineo, aka Peter Kavinsky of To All the Boys I've Loved Before. There's definitely one other member of the cast, though, who you'll recognize instantly: Sierra's mom, played by Lea Thompson.
Thompson has been working in Hollywood since the 1980s, when she made her movie debut in Jaws 3-D. She appeared in a few other '80s films, including the cult classic Red Dawn, until she landed the role she will probably always be associated with: Lorraine Baines McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy. A celebrated French actor known for The Dreamers and Godard Mon Amour, Louis Garrel recently realized a longtime dream, coming together to write a film with venerated French writer Jean-Claude Carrière. That film, A Faithful Man, examines a couple’s complicated relationship from the time she leaves him for his best friend to her eventual return, after her new lover dies.
“It’s about sex and death, and broken friendship—in general, it’s a French movie,” Garrel joked yesterday, sitting down with Deadline ahead of the film’s Toronto premiere. Working closely with the 82-year-old Carrière—known for collaborations with Milos Forman and Luis Buñuel, among others—Garrel began with a plot by French dramatist Marivaux, eventually starring in his own film, as he has with each of his features.
For Garrel, balancing his responsibilities as director and star wasn’t difficult at all, instead making the entire process easier.

The many admirers of Elena Ferrante’s novel “My Brilliant Friend” — the first in her smash series of four books about a pair of Neapolitan women moving through life — likely have two questions about the Italian-language TV adaptation. The first is how faithful it is to the source material, and the second is how well it matches the novel’s effortless ability to move within its protagonist’s mind, tracking subtleties of emotion.
The answers are mainly good news: In the limited series’ first two installments, screened at the Venice Film Festival Sept. 2 before a November bow on HBO, the story closely tracks the movement of the novel. And while achieving the internality of the book is too high an order for this series, its ability to conjure up the world of children confused at the happenings around them is its own achievement. “My Brilliant Friend” is an impressive effort,...

Crazy Rich Asians is a hit! More than a hit, it’s good: easily one of the best movies of the summer and certainly the best romantic comedy to come along in ages. Its characters are vibrant, its situations fascinating and the entire proceedings couched in a fascinating perspective rarely seen in big Hollywood movies. Just how rarely? The last time they produced an entirely Asian cast film was Little Women. In 1993. A full 25 years ago. And although I am shocked that Hollywood pays such paltry attention to the talented men and women of Asian descent working in their

Star Amy Adams is already receiving a lot of deserved praise, so let’s talk about Eliza Scanlen, who gave the show’s breakthrough performance as Camille’s 15-year-old half-sister Amma.
Based on Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, “Sharp Objects” was brought to the small screen by showrunner Marti Noxon and director Jean-Marc Vallee, who directed all eight episodes. The Southern Gothic miniseries revolves around Camille Preaker (Adams), a journalist who returns to her home town of Wind Gap to cover the murders of two girls, Ann Nash (Kaegan Baron) and Natalie Keene (Jessica Treska).

Emma Watson has been tapped to join the A-list cast of Greta Gerwig’s cinematic adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.
While her exact role remains unknown at present, EW confirms that it was the same character Emma Stone was previously rumored to play. According to a report in Variety, Stone was forced to bow out of the film because it conflicted with promotional obligations for her upcoming movie, The Favourite.
The former Harry Potter lead will star alongside Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, and Laura Dern in the Sony Pictures production, which will be both written and directed by Gerwig.

Meet the new Emma, different from the old Emma: Emma Watson is taking over for Emma Stone in Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” remake, which is set to go into production next month. Variety broke the news, noting that Stone can no longer join the project because she’ll be promoting Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” which IndieWire’s Anne Thompson recently declared an early Oscar frontrunner.

Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic “Little Woman” has found a different Emma.
Emma Watson is joining the Sony project in a role that was initial intended for Emma Stone, after Stone was unable to board the project due to scheduling conflicts.
Watson, who starred in Disney’s 2017 live-action adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast,” one of the year’s highest-grossing films, joins a loaded cast that includes “Lady Bird” stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet, as well as Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Florence Pugh and James Norton.
“Little Women” follows teenage sisters Amy, Jo, Beth and Meg and their mother Marmee during Civil War-era Massachusetts and details the sisters’ passage from childhood to womanhood as they navigate their new town, true love, and their first holiday without their pastor father.

While trying to decide what movie to watch this last weekend, the obvious choice soon became Crazy Rich Asians (2018): a movie that was rapidly becoming the same kind of cultural event that Black Panther (2018) was earlier this year. It featured an entirely Asian cast – something that hadn’t been seen in Hollywood since 1993’s now-forgotten Little Women – was receiving absolutely stellar reviews and was seemingly all that anybody could talk about (recent Oscar snafus aside). Then I went to my wife and told her that I wanted to see this movie over the weekend. She told me,

In “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor) isn’t the most outgoing high school student, but she lives a rich life in her imagination. She also expresses that creative spirit through her whimsical and romantic wardrobe.
This trait has been an integral part of the character, dating back to Jenny Han’s novel on which the movie is based. Several passages detail how Lara Jean will agonize over her ensembles and whether or not to pair them with an elaborate braid, courtesy of her little sister Kitty.
