Like the other broadcast networks, ABC is being heavily impacted by the repercussions of the actors and writers strikes. For the first time in the Alphabet Network's history, there are no new episodes of scripted shows on the Fall 2023 schedule. When co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman learned The Good Doctor would end with its current and seventh season, they “laid down on the floor and contemplated that for its truth, then pretty quickly had an idea of where we wanted to go with that final season,” Friedman reveals, before adding, “but this is definitely bittersweet… I could have continued to tell stories for Shaun [Murphy], and Freddie [Highmore] forever.” In the penultimate episode, there was plenty of sweetness for the show’s doctors: There was a wonderful impromptu 2 a.m. wedding for Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) and Park (Will Yun Lee); the return of original character Claire (Antonia Thomas) and her romantic reunion with Kalu (Chuku Modu); and Shaun, with the help of his wife Lea (Paige Spara) explaining to young addict Hannah how Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) can help her the way he helped Shaun, his “nonbiological son.” Finally, there was Glassman quietly telling Shaun,...

Saying goodbye to a beloved TV show is never easy. Even though The Good Doctor has already come under fire for some questionable choices in portraying an autistic doctor, it had a strong fan base that was forgiving enough to keep watching. However, all good things must come to an end, and The Good Doctor is no exception.
The show will end with the 10th episode of season 7, titled Goodbye. Although the title strongly hints at the goodbye the show will be waving to its audience, the promo suggests that it's not the only goodbye that will be said during the episode. And the fans are not very happy about it.
When Will The Good Doctor End?
ABC's controversial medical drama, which follows autistic doctor Shaun Murphy's quest to become a top surgeon and fit in at a hospital, is nearing the end of its run and will premiere its final episode next week,...

The Good Doctor – (Disney/Jeff Weddell) Freddie Highmore After seven seasons, The Good Doctor finishes up next week with its series finale. It’s been a satisfying run for the show’s star, Freddie Highmore, who played autistic surgeon Dr. Shaun Murphy. As he looks back on what the show has accomplished over its 126 episodes, Highmore said the aspect of the show that’s brought him the most pride has been the genuine sincerity with which he’s represented his character’s condition. By doing so, he said, he hopes he was able to help people see autism in a different light. (Click on the media bar below to hear Freddie Highmore) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Freddie_Highmore_Autissm_.mp3 The series finale of The Good Doctor airs Monday at 10/9c on ABC.

Back in March, it was announced that Eternal Beauty director Craig Roberts was set to take the helm of a horror comedy called The Scurry, working from a screenplay by The Mash Report’s Tim Telling, with House of the Dragon co-stars Olivia Cooke and Rhys Ifans on board to star alongside Paapa Essiedu (The Lazarus Project), Mia McKenna-Bruce (How to Have Sex), and Antonia Thomas (The Good Doctor). [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 9, “Unconditional.”] The penultimate episode of The Good Doctor just staged not one, but two massive cliffhangers in its final moments. TV Insider caught up with showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman to discuss what this means for The Good Doctor series finale, which airs Tuesday, May 21 at 10/9c on ABC. Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) returned in The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 9. She came back to San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital from her practice in Guatemala for treatment on a lump in her breast, which scans at her practice said were benign. Tests at St. Bonaventure confirmed the original diagnosis was wrong. Claire did, in fact, have breast cancer. A treatment plan was immediately set in place, and while the first surgery didn’t get clear margins when removing the mass, a second procedure seemed to have done the trick. Claire was up and moving...

Asher's death was bad enough. We don't need any more tragic endings for our favorite Good Doctor characters.
The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 9 should have ended happily, with Morgan and Park getting married and Claire learning she was cancer-free.
Instead, Glassman told Shaun that his cancer is back and that he's dying, while Claire collapsed right as she was about to get romantic with Jared. We only have one more episode left to turn all this around!
Penultimate episodes are a good place for tragic events -- if the finale is about moving past them so that the series goes out on a high note.
There's no reason to make the end of a beloved series so depressing that viewers walk away with nothing other than relief that the pain is finally over.
Except for those final scenes, this episode was quintessential Good Doctor.

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about The Good Doctor Episode 709, “Unconditional.”
It’s the beginning of the end as ABC’s The Good Doctor tonight kicked off its two-part series finale. The first hour had hallmarks of a happy series closer — a wedding and a fan-favorite couple rekindling their romance after years apart — before the episode took a double dark turn at the end.
Things got off to a great start when Claire Browne (returning original cast member Antonia Thomas) reunited with Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) as she came by to get a lump in her breast checked out. It had been ruled benign in Guatemala where she heads surgery but it turned out to be cancerous. When a reliable performer like The Rookie, which has always been on the fall schedule if not delayed by a pandemic or strike, is suddenly not in a network’s starting lineup for the season, fans understandably would be worried.
Magnifying their concerns is the fact that The Rookie is headed into its seventh season, which is when a lot of broadcast series are canceled these days, including two ABC dramas, Station 19 and The Good Doctor, this year.
Meanwhile, Will Trent, which launched in midseason two years ago, had its first chance to get on the ABC fall schedule but didn’t get it.
Keeping the two dramas on the bench does not signal a lack of confidence in them.
“The opposite,” Disney TV Group President Craig Erwich told Deadline in an interview tied to the Disney upfront presentation.

After announcing what shows from its current roster have been renewed or canceled last week, ABC has revealed its full lineup for its Fall 2024 programming. As previously announced, unscripted programs Celebrity Jeopardy, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Dancing With the Stars, American Idol, and more have been renewed for new seasons, though the latter will experience a big change when Katy Perry doesn’t return as a judge in its eighth season at ABC (23rd overall). To no one’s surprise, The Bachelor has also been renewed for Season 29. Shark Tank and What Would You Do? will also be coming back for more. As for its scripted programming, the Emmy-winning powerhouse that is Abbott Elementary will be back for Season 4 (it scored an early renewal in February), The Conners has been renewed for a seventh and final season, and Not Dead Yet was sadly canceled after two seasons. Grey’s Anatomy is a relic by broadcast TV standards, but the long-running medical drama is about to get another shakeup.
Deadline reports that the renewal for Season 21 came with a pretty big caveat — a reduced budget.
The longer a TV series is on the air, the more costly it is to produce episodes.
Broadcast TV has always been a numbers game, and with reduced ratings across the board, changes have to be made to make shows profitable.
The first significant change is Jake Borelli’s departure.
Borelli, who played Levi Schmitt, has been a series regular for five seasons.
Levi Schmitt may get an ending
While the actor is not returning as a series regular, negotiations are underway to bring him back for a multi-episode arc during Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 to give Levi a satisfactory conclusion.

The 2023-24 TV season was different and difficult as the industry dealt with simultaneous strikes by writers and actors, followed by discernable Hollywood contraction. But these cuts hit some bone.
Although every development season results in the death of several series, the decision to cancel shows like So Help Me Todd came across as particularly cruel to their ardent fans – especially when it involves wiping away much-needed Dei casts and shows that still have some legs to continue (does the beloved Blue Bloods really have to wrap after 14 episodes to make way for “new” shows on CBS when NCIS is about to start its 22nd season?).
And even though series like Bob ❤️ Abishola, Station 19 and The Good Doctor had time to plan for the end, it’s still a lot harder to say goodbye to old friends than to welcome (formulaic) new ones.

The Good Doctor’s television run is coming closer to its end as the medical drama show is wrapping It all up with the seventh season being aired right now.
Throughout its long-standing history, the Freddie Highmore-led series has introduced quite many shocking plot twists that many fans found hard to recover from, but the final season is especially abundant in jaw-dropping revelations and departures.
In the season’s fifth episode called Who At Peace, The Good Doctor reveals a shocking fate that’s been prepared for Dr. Asher Wolke, the only main gay character who throughout the whole season was struggling with embracing his Jewish identity.
The episode finds Asher dealing with a dying patient whose partner refused to convert on the eve of their wedding. Feeling a need to help the couple out, Asher decides to intervene and therefore succeeds in resolving the couple’s differences, but...

Medicine is always about people. That's why Grey's Anatomy, an aspirational show about doctors, is focused on its characters and their inner workings. And over 20 seasons, viewers have found (almost) no serious reason to doubt the talent of the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes.
The group of writers under her leadership describes the characters perfectly: the motivations almost never raise questions, everyone develops according to their personal characteristics, and therefore what happens on the screen becomes easy to imagine in reality.
This is what makes Grey's Anatomy so popular: all the doctors are ordinary people with their own weaknesses and problems. That's why viewers continue to watch the show even after 20 seasons.
At the same time, however, 20 seasons is such a long time that it is sometimes hard to believe. Stability and consistency are great, but fans of medical dramas are long overdue for a breath of fresh air. In addition,...

ABC’s medical drama series The Good Doctor is coming closer to the end of its television run of 7 years, but it surely isn’t leaving on a good note.
With all the heart-shattering plot twists that the last and seventh season left the viewers with, The Good Doctor’s finale will be bringing in even more bittersweet turns of events with one of them including a forgotten character’s return.
The trailer for season 7 penultimate episode titled Unconditional clearly features Claire Browne’s comeback to the show as she pays a visit to San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital for “a personal medical examination”, as the episode’s official synopsis on TVLine reads.
Though it may seem to be a really good way to say goodbye to the series by bringing one of its major characters back, Claire isn’t there for just a simple check-up as she appears to have breast cancer.

Paul Schrader has often landed himself in controversies with his anti-political correctness takes. There have been instances when Schrader was asked to back down from social media during his film’s release. He continues his usual controversial takes by announcing a Frank Sinatra biopic starring Kevin Spacey. Schrader had defended the actor back in 2018 at the peak of the #MeToo movement. He wants to cast him now since Spacey was cleared of the charges against him.
The Card Counter director Paul Schrader wants to cast Kevin Spacey in his Frank Sinatra biopic
Schrader’s intention to fight against Cancel Culture could cost him his movie as no studio may be willing to work on a controversial project. Even if it gets taken up by a studio, Schrader’s film still has to compete with Martin Scorsese’s biopic of the late singer and actor.

The trickiest thing in showrunning is to create a finale worth the whole time a viewer spent watching the show. Because it’s really devastating when after many years of investment in one project, going through its ups and downs, you end up watching the last episode that only gives you a “what the hell was that?” vibe.
Clearly, there are some show’s finales that left the fans disappointed, like it was with Seinfeld, for example. But at least in that case there was an argument about how deep the meaning of the ending was. But it seems that one of the recent hits, The Good Doctor, will not have even that.
It’s been known for a while now that the show was canceled and will end with the seventh season, which is currently airing on ABC. The Good Doctor premiered in 2017 and became an instant hit among the lovers of medical dramas.

Even though James “Ghost” St. Patrick tried to build a life where his kids wouldn’t have to break the law to get ahead, we’re inclined to think he’d be proud of the way Tariq steps up in the new trailer for Power Book II: Ghost‘s final season.

The Good Doctor is checking in with one of its original stars as the series winds down, and it doesn’t sound like good news is on the horizon.
A new promo released for the penultimate episode of the ABC medical drama shows Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) on Shaun’s (Freddie Highmore) doorstep with a smile.
They’ve been friends since the series premiere, so Claire’s return to town should be a happy occasion.
The clip then cuts to Shaun telling Claire that the doctors found a lump on her breast.
He reveals that the initial biopsy was negative, but the footage then shows Claire revealing that she does have cancer.
The Good Doctor has a bad track record handling actor exits, with the show typically putting them through the wringer.
Antonia Thomas is back for the final two episodes of The Good Doctor
It happened to Dr. Neil Melendez and Dr.

There was always a chance Steve would be autistic, but can The Good Doctor do this story justice?
The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 8 bounced everywhere with this storyline.
Shaun fretted about Steve and had flashbacks of his father's mistreatment, while Lea's good reasons for not wanting to do a brain study were dismissed in favor of her having some unaddressed fear of having an autistic child.
This isn't the best way to tell the story. The Good Doctor should have done a time jump at the beginning of the season like Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 1.
That would have given the series enough time to develop a story about STeve's potential autism instead of waiting until almost the last minute and rushing things.
Steve's Autism Story Could Be a Powerful Addition to The Good Doctor's Legacy... Or Not.

ABC’ The Good Doctor is about to wrap it all up with the seventh season’s final episode that is coming to the screens on May 21, but the show doesn’t seem to be done with shocking dramatical plot twists at this point.

Lyon Daniels took inspiration from the 'Star Wars' movies for his role in 'The Spiderwick Chronicles'.The 16-year-old actor is starring as Jared in the new series based on the children's fantasy books by Tony Diterlizzi but actually turned to a string of classic films in preparation, and wanted to base his portrayal on Darth Vader's alter-ego from the classic sci-fi franchise. He told ScreenRant: "Well, my character delves deep into mental health. He has mental health issues, and that's something that's very personal and important to me. I really wanted to respect that in my performance. So I tried to be as authentic about it as possible. "I talked with the showrunner, Aaron, and the writer as well. We avoided certain words and just tried to figure out how to do it in a very natural and coherent way as possible."I prepared for it by just watching movies.

One of TV’s most iconic families gets a chance to say goodbye.
Deadline reports that The Conners is nearing an official pickup at ABC for Season 7.
The caveat is that it would be the Roseanne follow-up’s final season of around six episodes.
A deal is still being ironed out but is expected to be finalized relatively soon. John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, and Lecy Goranson are among the cast members expected to return.
Many final seasons of long-running shows lose cast members due to the ever-increasing costs of making TV.
A consistent performer for ABC since it premiered, the show has much softer ratings than Roseanne – all following Roseanne’s controversial cancellation in 2018.

Dr. Charles could have had a powerful story.
He spent the hour trying to find answers about a patient's suicide while her husband refused to let her go despite her irreversible coma. Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 10 offered a sad story, but it wasn't as emotional as it might have been because of how it was all resolved.
[Note: This review contains discussions of suicide that could be upsetting for some readers.]
The story started perfectly, with June's husband asking why his wife chose to end her life and blaming himself while Charles reassured him that it wasn't his fault.
Nathan: What if the problem was me? Bad husband, neglecting her... what if I"m ther season she jumped?
Charles: Nathan, no. The reasons people take their own lives are mysterious and complex and it's rarely any one thing or one person.

Charles' reassurance probably seemed like empty words to Nathan.

The Jesus story wasn't as bad as it could have been.
Spoilers for The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 7 made it seem like this would be a ridiculous story, but by halfway through the hour, "Jesus" had been cured of his delusions and was struggling with feelings of inadequacy.
That was utterly on-brand for The Good Doctor, yet entirely unpredictable. Well played!
Most stories of this nature follow a pattern in which something miraculous happens to make the skeptics and non-believers wonder whether they've encountered the Son of God after all.
Thankfully, The Good Doctor didn't use that tired TV trope. Instead, Jesus' story turned into a tale about a guy who felt so insignificant that he convinced himself he was Jesus to feel like he mattered in this world.
Many people are walking around like that, desperate for someone to notice them so they can prove to themselves they're not invisible.
